  • Most people are aware that for laying hens you feed a Layer Pellet, for chicks you feed Chick Starter, and for in-betweeners you feed a Grower Diet. Each diet can be inadequate at best and dangerous at worst, if fed to the life stage. But what happens when you have a mixed-aged flock, with everyone running around together? How do we feed the flock a single diet for good health? Let Dr Sez chat you through it!

This was very helpful. My concern was always for my cockerel. He's a lovely boy and I wanted a feed that was good for the laying hens and chicks, but still safe for the cockerel. The grower feed, along with bowls of oyster shells seems to be working very well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

My mama hen is eating grower food with the chicks but the chicks and mama are with the other chickens at night. They are all free range so I really don’t worry about the chicks. Mama is a buff Orpington so she is very protective. She like pecked the crap out of one of our other chickens combs when our other hen got to close to her chicks. Only issue is that the chickens eat the starter food in the morning. They still eat their food to for their age but usually just chick food in the morning and night. I also feed the chickens compost as well. Maybe I need to bring their food in at night so the older hens don’t eat any starter food.

What percentage of body weight should we be feeding our under 16 weeks chickens over a 24 hour period? Thank you so much for all you do on social media. Your advice has been fantastic and helped us save our dorper lambs this year and of course increase the health of our many breeds of chickens. Thanks again!

Oh great, I'm so glad! SOrry for the late reply here. Is there a reason we're looking at percentage of body weight, Leanne? It depends on their breed- eg a meat bread like a Cob will consume about 4x that of a little laying breed chick. But really when it comes to practical feeding they should always have ad-lib, ie as much as they'd like. They will continue to eat until their minimum requirements have been met (usually certain amino acids). Especially in our littlies under 16 weeks old it' importnat that we have that really quality food there for them at all times, so they get all they need.

@@SeztheVet Thank you for the reply, Sez, and never too late. I appreciate the workload of Veterinarians and even the fact that you can do this incredible Vlog and reply is above and beyond the call of duty. The reason for the question was prompted from the dorper lamb instructional video. I was just checking to make sure it wasn't possible to over-feed the hens like you can rumen animals. You have answered clearly and precisely, and for that I say Thank You!! Love your work! Cheers. Leanne.

Hi Leanne, would you mind very much if I used this as a testimonial for my online tutorials? I can use an anonymous name if you'd like :) I'm also looking for a few people to record a very short video with for testimonials, if there's any chance you'd be up for it ! No worries at all if not :

Great video. What do I feed my older hens whose laying days are behind them?

great question. I would recommend the growing feed again. Higher in protein, but your older girls will do well with some extra protein anyway as they're often starting to struggle to keep weight on.

What if the chicks eat the oyster shells?
