Just as in any other heavy lift, where we brace the abs to stabilize the spine, in the TGU we do the same.
Trying to crunch or sit up the TGU will not work with a heavy KB because a) the spine isn't stable and b) abdominals are relatively weak muscles that aren't designed for heavy lifting.
Instead, use the biggest players you have: glutes in the lower body and lats in the upper body. Both, incidentally, are also considered 'core' muscles by strength coaches and physiotherapists, but are very often neglected as such by trainees.
Breathing is an important element of bracing the core. Use breathing in each effortful step of the TGU to not only help you lost stronger, but also to moderate the pace and get the most out of every rep.

A solid well-explained tip that's worth more than a 20kg kettlebell's weight in gold. Many thanks.

I've seen so many TGU instructional videos and you are the only one who covers this section in detail. I ended up figuring it out just from experience but I wish I had seen this months ago lol. Thanks

Someone once told me to think of it as punching the kettlebell across my body, not a sit-up. That really helped.
Of course, now that I see how carefully you come back down, it makes me realize how lazy I usually get once my butt hits the ground. I need to keep that elbow-to-shoulder movement all the way to the end, not just roll back lazily.
    Great video as always Kat!

You go into detail like a martial arts instructor. All the other supposed instructional videos on TH-cam show visually how it should look but they don't go into the fine details like you do and the fine details are what everybody needs to know in order to perform the technique properly and to avoid injury. The way you explain how to shift and use bodyweight reminds me of when I was learning Judo and BJJ.

Thank you Michael, I like your analogy! Both in martial arts and in kettlebell training, we learn how to use our body as one unit to our best advantage, and that's all technique. All the best in your training!

Awesome stuff, cheers Kat. The video (at 5 mins 34 secs) has clarified the last movement for me ie, rolling back down from the elbow so the body is over the upper arm again (and the upper arm is flat on the ground with the shoulder packed under the body) 😁 👍

    Hello
Something I have been in search for quite sometime is a connection with somebody that goes beyond vanity. It's very hard to do in this day and age. People can be, somewhat very superficial.
On my quest to achieve this I have learnt a lot about human nature. It seems to me that those who are not given traits such as beauty or being wealthy are some of the nicest, kindest and generous people.
While the "gorgeous" and well off seem to be the most arrogant and greedy people out there. Of course that's not to say there aren't beautiful kind people out there.
I've been in the process of change for a while now and I have made some decent changes but don't you just hate it when people can't let go of your past mistakes.
I saw your profile and it intrigued me. I wanted to learn more about who you are and what type of path you would like on in life.
    Can we talk?

Hello Kat can you create a video on lateral KB swings to work the transverse plane? I'm talking about like wood-chop or golf swing like moves. There are videos from others but I trust you better. I have been subscribed for years and you are the best instructor.

    • @KatsKettlebellDojo
      @KatsKettlebellDojo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Enrique,
Great question, but I must disappoint you. I don't do such swings. Ever. And I don't recommend them, to anyone, even golf people.
I might instead make a video on why I don't recommend them, and why you're better off perfecting your regular swings, because I'm sure there are many people asking the same question as you. Thank you for the question!
