considering a wp for a chev 350 is around $50 you can imagine how much the rest of that original engine would have cost. most diesel engines out of big trucks are over 35,000 i'd say 15,000 is pretty affordable.
Texas Speed partially sponsored the motors IIRC so he probably paid little to nothing for them. Also, going off what others said, it becomes unfeasible to pay high prices for rare parts for engines that aren't produced anymore. You'll spend that 15k in a season easy on old hardware with no support. Especially on a boat that big. Labor isn't cheap either. My source is I literally do this for work, and I have for half a decade.
The v8 cummins (903) has a scant following among truckers, so you probably could have bought a running 903 powered semi for $10k or less, used the engine and sold the remainder. Of course, the Bradley fighting vehicle uses the 903, so surplus engines would have been available. Or re-powered with common Big cam 855 Cummins, or perhaps two Duramax diesels. The transmissions would not have been necessary.
@Bisforbuild your probably going to want to look into getting some new propellers for that boat, the ones on it have their pitch set for the diesel engines you pulled out and as a result wont alllow you to take full advantage of the power curve of your new engines since their pitched for high torque and low RPM
I love this project, it's different. Let's be honest most of the builds on this channel are different. When a build is started I'm ashamed to say some of the time I'm like there is no way this thing is going to get finished let alone look like what it's designed to look like. Then, i'm blown away by the finished product. Congrats to the whole team! I know this has been one of those ongoing projects but the best part is, you came out cancer free and the boat is back in the water under its own power. Awesome! ❤👊

I hate when bad things happen to good people, but I’m glad you’re cancer free at the moment. You made the right choice by traveling and not focusing on builds! It certainly puts things in perspective. Loved the video as always.
Been following from beginning of build, thanks for the breakdown. We had an 1947 40' Hunter Wooden Cruiser that had two HUGE 6 cylinder Gray Marine gas engines. We were considering swapping to diesel, but the boat sank, so solved that problem. Was really cool to see the LS engines in there, this yacht is really cool and thank you for documenting the build!
The grim reaper came nocking and you said not today satan! You're a beast and I'm glad you are good brother. Ii did not realize those diesel engines cost that much. I thought replacing both engines would be way more.

PCM makes decent stuff but they're slowly disappearing it seems. (I've been a marine technician for about 4 years.) The 5.7 that mercury uses is not an LS block. Just free info for the crowd that cares to learn.

You could sell it and be even at worst. I'll take that. 🤙🏾I can quite remember why you didn't throw 2 Cummins into it, but I loved this series. Can't go wrong with LS's.
As long as you are happy with it Chris it doesn't matter if you put a million dollars in the rebuild, the only thing that mallers is the smile it puts on your face because that is priceless! Something to smile about these days are few and far between!! But i still think you should have went with 2 dodge cummins 6 cylinder diesel engine or 2 ford powerstroke diesel engines for the torque and fuel mileage, i wonder what the cost would have been if you went that route?

Chris: I loved the last vid in this series, the trip home. Absolutely superb 👍 Also like this cost breakdown, keeps it real. Oscar is worth his own weight in gold.
I've really enjoyed this series. Given the cancer and Covid set backs, you completed a lot of work in a short period...especially the last couple months. I can't wait to see your interior upgrades and the final performance figures. That boat should haul a$$. Congratulations, you're almost across the finish line.
It sounds like the old phrase that there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes now has a contender - there is no boat more expensive than a cheap Italian yacht. :-) Great video!! I have a couple of 1987 Mercedes and if I wasn't the mechanic, I could not afford them.
I understand your pain I purchased a ski boat a few years ago and we took it out to the lake 4 times and it threw a rod through the oil pan. All in all for the 3500 we paid from someone we know. After it was all done we had about 5-6 times that in it and had problems every summer. Needless to say we no longer have that money pit.

Considering the age of the boat and the fact it's now a non standard specification, the value you will be able to insure it for wil probably be down to a marine surveyor's valuation, not what you want to insure it for. I'm not sure what gas powered engines will have on that figure. They're generally less desirable due to increased fire risks. That could also raise the insurance premium.

I’m glad you stuck with it even through your hardships. Would be really interested to know what you earned from the boat TH-cam videos and whether that covered the cost of the build.
Great to see the boat finally back together and working like it was designed. I do have one piece of unsolicited advice for you though. Find a professional go fast boat driver to teach you all the nuances of high performance boat handling. That way you can push the boat to its limits and have a blast with it....safely. Boats can be a total thrill ride but they can also kill you in a second. Nobody wants to see that but we DO want to see just what that Riva can do with Texas Speed power. Just a semi educated guess but I believe you may benefit from a prop change but it would take an experienced driver to know what it needs.
Well broken down! Thanks. And not nearly as bad as I had thought it was. They say a boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into… and I don’t think you’re doing too badly on that front… all things considered. Bravo.
This has been such an awesome story to follow! For some reason boats interest me, all ways have. I cant help but think back through the years! I've gotten a new job, got married and am having child all in the span of this series. I might just be high though...
You could use longer intakes that work better on low revs. Also I watched a video her about new style propellers which increase efficiency and fuel ratio. Try those out pls.
Congrats - I don't know your weather situation where you are, but hopefully you get some nice weather to enjoy it before winter arrives. Also get a few other people to have the marine tickets so they can drive and you can enjkoy a drink or two while out and about.
I totally get what you’re talking about with the cancer. Our 6 year old son was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor almost a year ago. Jan-Mar of this year was a blur when he was doing daily radiation treatments. Plus the weekly oncologist appointments, all of which are an hour away from home. Everything else falls to the wayside and it’s hard to focus. Hope you stay in remission! F**k cancer!
I think you guys did good. If you were to add labor costs...oye. Glad you are doing well. I certainly enjoyed this as when I was younger me and my family totally restored my Owens 27ft with a new engine etc. That was a long time ago. Life is made of memories.
@B is for Build . Chris thing is, its totally unique. We really have not seen the max speed. Don't you have a lambo with a monster chevy? , sounds familiar. Cars like that are worth something. Also boats are holes in the water, you throw money into. Anyone who wants your unique boat will have deep pockets. So enjoy it , use it in good health. I am looking forward to seeing it now and again. Holidays are right around the corner.
BOAT = "reak ut nother housand". Literally. But as far as BOATs go, I think this is a good investment, and you'll get you money back should you ever want to sell. After all, it's a B Is For Build project, and it's a Riva. Do I wish the engines were Gale Bank's L5P turbo diesel marine engines? Yes! Are there buyers for a Riva yacht powered Texas Speed gas engines? Yes! I think as long as Chris had the disposable income from the channel, etc... Why not? They were fun episodes to watch, and there was great building and creator content shared. I hope we'll see more of the Riva, and the good times that it will bring Chris and the BIFB crew.
Well done Chris, and no matter what the cost, you have 2 new engines in a classic Riva you love... p.s the value you described did not factor in a boat with such low hours on these engines which adds a considerable premium but if its any consolation hardly any boat owner makes money on older used boats unless they use man math's.
I am sure it is a relief to be cancer free above all else. And you're a fortunate man on top of that to be able to afford not only this project, but all the others and a staff at the same time. It's what the rest of us can only dream of.
Did you swap out the props? Going from diesel to gas, I would think the torque of the diesel engine would swing larger prop with more pitch? Or did the LS handle it.
Love a boat build, only thing I watch on your channel (sorry, fix cars everyday, so intrested in more) been here from the start of boat, great to see it done and going, enjoy it!
Man I had stop watching u for a while but im back. And I have watched all ur videos . I’m happy ur doing better ! I was the kind a few years ago that was trying to buy the brz from you before the rims was stolen 🤦🏽♂️😅
Do any of those other boats have Texas Speed engines and Holley management systems? Tack on at least 20 grand to the value of the boat for cool factor.
I just bought a 1988 Chris craft fittipaldi for 1000$ Going to be restoring it and dropping some ls engines in it. Your boat build made me want to take on the project
I wish I would've seen you put a couple cat c12 engines in that thing. Probably would've liked it better. Gas vs diesel. Mightve been same cost but more effective in the long run I believe
I haven't gotten to the end and grand total yet, but I am pretty sure it was far more than just fixing/replacing the one bad engine would have cost, largely because that probably could have been done in 12-18 months, saving $18k-$24k in storage fees.
I love the fact B is for Boat has been posting soo much!
I'm more interested in this than his other builds lol

I like how Chris was like, The original engine's water pump was $2500, so we decided to go with the 15,000 Texas Speed engine
Yeah but water pump costs 1/6 of the entire engine cost. That's crazy value
considering a wp for a chev 350 is around $50 you can imagine how much the rest of that original engine would have cost. most diesel engines out of big trucks are over 35,000 i'd say 15,000 is pretty affordable.
And no parts to be found anywhere. So I think swapping the engine completely is a good deal long term

Love your boat. Take care of your health and keep doing what you do.
Money well spent. You gained experience and viewership. I learned a lot from your videos. Thank you.
Awesome as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
Great video.I found your channel recently and have enjoyed it very much.I hope you make many more.
Live your best life @B! Thank you for taking us along for the ride! o7
Don't know why, but this boat project has been my absolute favorite! Hope you are able to actually enjoy it out on the water next summer.
Well done Chris, and no matter what the cost, you have 2 new engines in a classic Riva you love... p.s the value you described did not factor in a boat with such low hours on these engines which adds a considerable premium but if its any consolation hardly any boat owner makes money on older used boats unless they use man math's.
I can’t wait to see the final product, and I’m even more eager to see future products.
Lots of love from Australia mate. I'm happy about your cancer outcome.
0:35 Smoke from The 2020 Oregon wildfire season, it was one of the most destructive on record in the state of Oregon.
I’m so glad You got it back in the water and it looks good!!!!
Exciting to see phase 2 when you do the interior!
Great series. The only reason I found your channel.
17:28 makes the diesel look like a good deal 😂
Thanks. Great work B is for build.
I am sure it is a relief to be cancer free above all else. And you're a fortunate man on top of that to be able to afford not only this project, but all the others and a staff at the same time. It's what the rest of us can only dream of.
I pray that your healing and for complete remission
It's the experience and the journey to get it done. Thank you for sharing. You guys rock🎉
Heck yeah it was worth it! What a story! Congrats on another completed build guys! Don't forget to enjoy it and celebrate 🤘🏼
Did you swap out the props?
Going from diesel to gas, I would think the torque of the diesel engine would swing larger prop with more pitch?
Or did the LS handle it.
awesome montage! so glad all worked out!
I will stick by my suggestion of electric, but, that being said, it has turned out so nice. I am happy that you are happy with it.
Love a boat build, only thing I watch on your channel (sorry, fix cars everyday, so intrested in more) been here from the start of boat, great to see it done and going, enjoy it!
Such inspiration. I’m a week into taking 3 weeks off to get our Alberg 30 running.
You've given your cost breakdown, do you have an idea for the cost of a set of rebuilt original engines ?
Man I had stop watching u for a while but im back. And I have watched all ur videos . I’m happy ur doing better ! I was the kind a few years ago that was trying to buy the brz from you before the rims was stolen 🤦🏽♂️😅
Can’t believe it was 3 years ago! I’ve been watching you for too long.
Do any of those other boats have Texas Speed engines and Holley management systems? Tack on at least 20 grand to the value of the boat for cool factor.
It’s been a cool series so far. I love the look of that boat too. Worth every penny in my opinion.
I think the best result here is that Chris battled cancer and is winning ,for that alone i am truly thankful. Remarkable story Remarkable man .
