Gotta hand it to you man for tackling this. What blows me away with Billy's version is it's freaking perfect, did he make a single mistake in this whole song? Killer right hand, guys a monster. Love how you broke down the song in chord shapes. I subscribed because of this. Cheers.
So many people talk about how "music these days" sucks and the only good stuff was in the 60's through 90's (varying depending on who you ask). I love your point of view: there's so much good new music out there from people who never would've had the chance to be heard had they been born a few decades earlier! Every era has a ton of crap that gets popular, but with enough time, all you'll remember are the gems.
Bro, not just the talent, but for those of us mere mortals, the ability to review, have songs like this be analyzed and shared, so we may be instructed, and spread the joy. I remember playing in bar bands years ago, and recording a song to be learned about 5 times back-to-back on cassettes, then playing it over and over till I'd gotten it down. Lyrics? Well, you did your best. Now it's ALL out there. Incredible!!
your observations on how relaxed he is, how he's put in the time and now it just flows from his pores are so, so astute. this is pure genius at work here, he's making it look easy, and that's the mark of all real genius. i've been playing guitar well over 30 years and i spent 2 weeks learning the dylan version of this. i saw billy bust this out and had one of those 'sell all your guitars' moments.
Michael, you have a unique and very enjoyable style. Half reaction, half tutorial. Your understanding of theory, and your guitar skills are masterful, but you present theory without overwhelming us theory deficient folks. You’re humbled by Billy’s skills, but you figure out what he’s doing pretty dang quick! You’re a great teacher! 👍
I’m not sure what I like better; when billy picks the song, or when Michael figures out the run and plays it nearly flawless after 30 seconds of listening
I just love how much he enjoyed it! I "literally" have no idea what he's talking about but showed up in my Google News, I love Billy Strings, so watched it. This guy is great!
I got a guitar, I thought I could play a bit, now I know I totally can't. But to see two that can, nothing compares. That should be Michaels enjoyment, when listening. Love big time!
Literally had my first guitar teacher tell me this. He asked me to bring some cd’s of my favorite songs I want to learn so I did. Don’t remember what they were but needless to say I, wasn’t about to learn them in my first few lessons 😂
I will never be Billy Strings but he just blows me away, i can't get the words to explain how good i think he is its beyond me and i love watching your videos and your passion on talking about Billy, thank you.
This was recorded backstage at a local music venue in Lexington Ky called Manchester Music Hall. He is such a ridiculous picker. Check out Billy’s meet me at the creek live at music city roots. Absolutely mind blowing instrumental work across the entire band. Great reaction as always. Keep up the great work. 👍
1st time I heard him play, it's my goal to play something a teeny tiny fraction of sounding recognizable! You popped up and here we are ! Thanks Il keep watching 🎵🎶👍
He's only 28.. 28! I've seen him live twice and I can't wait to see him a hundred more times and then some more after that. His covers are insane and his original music is so we'll done. The 🐐
Everything Billy does is pure magic. I discovered his stuff about a year and a half ago and it's all just incredible. Thanks for spreading the word, Michael.
Billy rips! A ton of insight in these break downs. His abilty to stay precise through the energy and speed of his flat picking is top notch. Much appreciated!
I've watched so many of your videos now, it's insane because you do so many of the videos that I watch on the regular, some for years now. I've recently bought a guitar in hopes of finally learning after years of thinking I never would be able to. Learning guitar is a lot like planting trees. The best time to do it was 20 years ago, the second best time is now.
I just discovered Billy Strings about a year ago, and I have to say that he’s one of the best guitar players I’ve ever seen. His picking is so spot on , there are no flat notes , and his voice is amazing. A gift from God above.
I don’t play any musical instrument, and I’ll be honest, I have no idea what you’re saying most of the time 😂 but your reaction to these is quality and makes me appreciate the musicianship!
Billy’s shows at the Cap were incredible! I loved every second of it. The ending songs blew me away. So many Grateful Dead favorites. Billy and all the guys are amazing. ❤️⚡️💀⚡️❤️
love Billy, saw an interview with him where he was talking about how he breaks strings at shows cuz he gets into it and plays hard. the interviewer was like, "that must be so nerve-wracking!" Billy just looked confused and said something like, "nah, more like frustrating. I'm just trying to put on a good show, man."
I feel like the song he does says so much about his soul and your break down about what's going on On the guitar just gives me so much comfort BECAUSE I want to relate to Billy and this is that connection. Thanks Sir. I really appreciate it.
I was lucky enough to be at the Doc Watson 100th Birthday celebration last weekend in Winston Salem, NC. Truly a special night with a lot of Doc's band mates (Jack Lawrence, T. Michael Coleman, etc...many others) and Billy did all of us Deep Gap, NC / High Country /Boone NC Natives SO stinkin' proud. It will go down as one of my most special nights of my life. And then...Pamela Rice brings 'The Antique' 58957 Tony's D-28 out for Billy to play a few on and you seriously could have heard a pin drop in the big coliseum. Nice breakdown Man, thanks for paying homage to my guitar hero. (Now 2 of my heroes)
Michael, I just want to thank you for putting up these awesome videos, man. You truly push me to practice more and improve my guitar skills. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Sending love and good wishes to you and yours! Keep on pickin!
I've watched so many of your videos and I just realized I wasn't subscribed. I'm a singer/acoustic performer and I've been doing it for most of my adult life but still young in my journey. Your honesty is refreshing to see and watching someone of your caliber enjoy the same music that i do is incredible.
I saw Billy for the first time this year at Red rocks. Greatest concert ive ever seen. Absolutely obsessed after that saw him the next night and then Renewal at Buena Vista and gonna be 6 shows next year in Colorado 😮 I’m broke now. Anywho… I truly believe he’s the greatest musician of our generation. I’ve seen Dave Matthew’s, Dead and Co, Goose, Thom York etc… and I’m telling yah this kid has something special I’ve never seen before. Absolutely love it
About 6k of the views on that Billy Strings video are from me and the people I've sent it to. 😃 His Tennessee Stud is awesome too. I'll also say it takes a brave man to even turn on a camera and try to keep up with Billy. Kudos, Michael
Awesome as always, Michael. Thank you. Love Biilly's voice - he has such a natural tone and generally sings firmly in a tenor range, so when he nails those lovely warm low notes- wow. I suppose when you play that well, it's inevitable that your singing gets overlooked sometimes. I know you've remarked on this before too.
Billy is a damn legend. The world of bluegrass and country is in good hands with young people like him, Molly Tuttle, and Sierra Hull. It makes me really happy to see classic Americana music coming back to the mainstream.
From an interview I saw… Billy: “ I would listen to her practice and think ‘damnit I’ve gotta practice more’” Molly: “ I would listen to him practice and think ‘I could never play what he does’” 😂
mate, I watched this video before coming here and the first thing I thought was "give up and just listen cos this guy is a genius" , but give you great credit you do a great job decoding. Love your work.
I’ve been watching for almost over a year, and each time I watch a vid I start to understand more and more, also the fact that you can catch on to the tunes so damn fast, love your channel man🤙🏾
I spent a week learning to play (I got 95% down I think) this during lockdown and finger-picking is my style so I smiled to watch you go through the same head-scratching process in this video. Keep the great content coming @MichaelPalmisano - lovin' your work.
Brilliant analysis and playing, mind blowing, you’ve forgotten more than I will ever know. It’s enlightening and depressing at the same time. I do enjoy and learn and keep coming back, cheers.
I'm a drummer, and love your reaction/ lessons. Was hooked when I watched your nose to the grindstone ( Tyler Childers ) reaction. Hes from my region of Kentucky. Also a Big Wreck fan and saw your Ian Thornley reaction. Hes a BEAST on Guitar
Michael you are very thoughtful and Humble that is why I love your channel, I do also love billy strings and I couldn't have said better the way you explain things and the way you see music and musicians I see your passion with every frame and I just love watching your vidz
I really appreciate focus on the harmony. I feel like Dylan's musicianship is often unappreciated because of his lyric writing, but he knew exactly how to put chords together to tell a huge part of the story that lyrics themselves can't convey. Thanks so much for covering both fingerstyle and Dylan.
I love watching people work pieces out in real time. Really helps both technique and how I usually tackle tough pieces and the frustration that inherently comes with learning new material. Great video🤘
I really appreciate the guitar and also human centric knowledge, enthusiasm, and above all, the really cool, encouraging attitude; it's all about playing to express everything that humans can feel and want to communicate, but I think above all, the joy of playing and living music. It really grabbed me how much you appreciate the Dead; that's definitely a nice niche here that wasn't filled before! I think I just talked myself into supporting the channel; I always fall for me when I give myself a pitch! Seriously, I have benefitted from your videos, so I'm glad to support your work! Not to mention, there's probably something in it for me...
Thanks so much for being so encouraging and taking the time to break down Billie’s flat picking techniques. I recently came across your excellent description of what I wish I could do, I only wish I had worked harder when I started at 9. Had I done that, I know I wouldn’t be having to invest so much more time practicing. It was my good fortune to come across Billie this weekend also. I was astonished by his musical background, not so much learning from his step-dad, but playing Bluegrass, Folk and Country. So proud of his Grammy Award just last month at 28. Thanks Michael for your efforts and building a TH-cam channel worth watching.
Back in '74, the Hawaiian guy that taught me slack key wouldn't give me a 2nd lesson until I had learned the right thumb on the lower 3 strings. 20-30 minutes a day for 3 weeks. MUSCLE MEMORY. You practice so that you don't need to "think", you play and it flows.
Matt, go pick out a decent playing guitar and start having some fun! It is never too late sir. Playing and learning will melt away your troubles during this horrible time we have been going through.
When the people you think are so good give credit to someone also as being sooo gooood, you know that they’re really soooo damn gooooood. Saw a local guy in a bottle shop playing a Billy song tonight. We’re on the verge on something and I love the edge
Nice one Michael, good breakdown. Peter, Paul & Mary did an awesome version of this Dylan classic, on two guitars. Brings back memories. Cheers from Sydney AU.
I’ll save you the search: th-cam.com/video/kZLBVi_0ENU/w-d-xo.html Took a second to find because it’s not in the title or thumbnail. Sweet track! Thanks for sharing!
I'm so excited that you exist...offering (humble) learn-by-Deweying deep dives on the next two songs I wanted to learn. Billy Strings's Dylan DTTIA and Mandolin Orange's Wildfire.
My friend, I am watching this before listening. You do a great job with all the videos I have seen! I am sure you will break this down wonderfully. I like to read the posts, there are so many great reactions. I love people articulating how this moves them. When I first heard Billy play this, I had to learn it. If one has been around long enough and have played songs like Landslide etc it can be played. As I am listening, you understand secondary doms ETC. This is a great example of why the guitar is such a great instrument.
"I can't do all the things he's doing" Thanks for being honest and not trying to fake it. Earned my sub.

I have NO IDEA what you're talking about but I love watching you break down his music. The excitement on your face makes it.
Eh tho... gets me genuinely excited and I can’t explain it!!
Lol... its like meeting someone that can teach you (really) something after any degrees you did
Nice to know I’m not alone.
I’ve decided Billy Strings really is the real deal. He’s an epic natural song writer and performer.
He just won a grammy!
@@AldousHuxley7 it appears he did. A COVID-era Grammy so there was no ceremony.

After watching him for 3 nights in a row last weekend…he is absolutely 100% the real deal. Generational talent.
I hear so much Doc Watson in this kid's playing. You can definitely hear the influence. Doc would be very proud of Billy.
Gotta hand it to you man for tackling this. What blows me away with Billy's version is it's freaking perfect, did he make a single mistake in this whole song? Killer right hand, guys a monster. Love how you broke down the song in chord shapes. I subscribed because of this. Cheers.
Aaaand, he sings good while doing it!
This guy has no ego in his teaching and breakdowns. That’s what brings me back to his videos. I’ll have to start watching much more from now on.
This...
We've heard of Billy having a lazy eye, but in this video neither one even got out of bed and he still nails every note.
LOL!!
@Youre Name good joke ?

Do y’all realize how lucky we are to be alive right now in this era of music? The talent nowadays is INCREDIBLE!

Billy is something else. Want to see another great flat picker a pioneer the late great great Tony Rice. Both play this same song both great.
Watched some of the Strings Dead stuff this morning too, glad you're on it. As usual. 😉
