I don't agree, it takes away Sephiroth's agency imo. Looking at the OG in isolation, we see Sephiroth, who's always had things hard because he's 'different' and isolated, spends days in the Shinra library reading old books, many of which have inaccurate information in them. He falsely believes he's an Ancient, and from his perspective it's an 'aha!' moment. He's finally understood the source of his torment and has an explanation for why he's so special. He's an ancient and these filthy humans have wiped out his people, stolen their land and are now experimenting on his mother. He's going to take revenge on the humans, starting with the town right in from of him.
If you played the original it goes along the line of she saw him on the train station being broken minded, then she thought I don't want him to go away so she went along with it, not knowing the consequences it would led to
The reason Tifa's not disputing his story is because some of what Cloud is saying is true; Sephiroth burned down Nibelheim while killing majority of the residents due to going mad. However, from Tifa's perspective she remembers Cloud not being there and at the same time she was injured by Sephiroth and was unconscious, so Cloud remembering some of these details semi-accurately is confusing her more. It makes her unsure of what she remembers as well, so she doesn't bring it up, since it could potentially cause more problems. Deep down, Tifa's worried for Cloud's mental state, but at the same time she wants to watch over him without overstepping, fearing it could affect his mental state. However, later in OG FF7, Tifa's fear for Cloud's mental state becomes reality when Sephiroth twist the truth later in the story.

Someone can probably explain better than me as it still kind of confuses me too, but basically Zack's memories got merged with Cloud's after the events of crisis core. Cloud is remembering the events as if he was Zack himself but he was actually the soldier guarding tifa. That's why cloud seems so weird and not himself in these flashbacks because that's how Zack acts and it's actually Zack who goes through all that. After Zack and Cloud were critically injured after fighting sephiroth in the mako reactor hojo did some experiments on them that ended up giving Cloud Mako poisoning.
