Thanks for a great video. I have a 2001 Honda Accord V6, when I removed the intake manifold the ports were solid shut with crud in the intake and the engine port was 80% clogged. Cleaned the ports and the throttle body, put everything back together and no more P0401 code. I'm at 600 miles plus now and no issues so far.
March 2022 I was extremely hesitant to try and do this myself. The mechanics around here charge 140 and hour and said just in labor it would be 3 hours plus a new EGR valve so I decided to try. My experience is oil change and an alternator so next to none. This video leaves nothing to guess about everything is included. The author needs a Venmo bc I feel like I owe him a 50 dollar bill for saving me so much money. It did take me 5 hours but that included trips to the parts store for torque wrench rental. Thank you a million times over!
Igor's how to tutorial was so helpful to me. My background/experience with working on cars is very limited. I always been afraid of fixtures, because I didn't know what I was doing and feared making things worse. Igor really breaks things down, and proceeds at a pace that even I am able to keep up with and not get lost. I was able to take care of the problem code P0401 (insufficient EGR flow) and get my car inspected. I am grateful for Igor taking the time to make this video. It was certainly a blessing to me, and I would highly recommend his teaching skills to anyone experiencing problems with their vehicle. Thank you Igor!

@@IgorKadulenkovwhat issues did you experience before cleaning? My car radomly starts surging when on the highway. I give it gas and it dies. Then suddenly it gets power again. It acts like a bucking bronco. One min it only goes 30 mph the next it races really face then it loses power again. This happened about once ever 5 months for about 30 mins of drive time. Is this erg port related?
Igor, thank you for posting a great video! For me the hardest part was getting to the bottom throttle body bolt on the firewall side. You can't see the bolt head so you end of feeling around for it under the throttle cables. I also removed the EGR valve. That allows you to clean up all the carb cleaner that is sprayed in from the top side. I used carb cleaner, an old bike brake line as a snake and compressed air to clean the passage from both ends.

For how long did your check engine light stay off once you cleaned your EGR valve and its ports? I spent so much at the honda dealership repair center getting so much work done, took my car to Auto Zone for the free check engine light diagnostic and it came up with the P0401 code as well.

Thank you for this video! I have a 99 Accord EX V6 and as many others have said, the ports were totally blocked off and clogged through from one end to the other with carbon build up. I cleaned the ports as you did and put it all back together and wow, not only is the gas pedal responsive from the very top, but my acceleration greatly improved, the car runs and idles smoother, and the exhaust used to reak but now almost no smell at all. for those that dont realise this on like my 99 model 3.0 the pcv hose is in a different spot and its much safer to actually just pull the pcv itself out and leave hose connected.. if u try to pull this hose off after 150k miles more then likely u will be buying another... just sayin. very helpful video though. seems to have worked for me so far as well and i can see it was done on my vehicle by previous owner a year ago at a shop for $100.. took me 15-20 mins and a $8 can of cleaner
Changing my valve cover and tune seals I came across this video. Having to take my air manifold off to get to the seals I wouldn't have known to clean the EGR passages like that so thank you!
I have a 2001 Honda Accord F23A4 engine 4-cylinder, but this video is still excellent to watch! Very detailed and important information is mentioned or cautioned! THANK YOU!
Your videos are great. I had error code P1491 and so I tried replacing the EGR valve with one I was able to snag for ~$50.00 on Amazon. After clearing the code and driving another 50 or so miles it turned back on, but this time gave me P0401 - EGR "A" Insufficient Flow. I'll give this a shot!
This was very helpful but my intake manifold wouldn't come off until I completely separated the right side inlet. I think because of a couple bolts that were studs with nuts on both sides sticking up. Still a very good video. I found my passage was clean but I still took it apart to make sure after seeing other Accords plugged. Nice to see a video like this where you can see what's going on without someone talking 90 mph and missing video pieces. Very helpful. Thank you.
Excellent video on this repair. Great tip on using the magnet to hold the nuts in place while being removed. That will save a lot of time looking for fallen nuts. Such a simple idea that I have never seen before.
Great video. I would not have even considered trying this before, but watching you and following the instructions, I feel confident I can do this. Thanks, Igor!
This is the clearest instructional video i have ever come across! Many thanks Igor, i couldn't have done it without ya. I had a lot of fun and you saved me a bunch of money - thanks again!
Yes this will solve your problem 100% if you have this code. Do it yourself. Hardest part is torque wrenching the bolts to 16 ft/lb. First time I broke my plenum bolts and had to visit Honda's Carland to buy a new set. Charged me about 14$ but it was worth it to have my emissions passed. DIY
Great video, clear concise and easy to follow. The channel from the throttle body to the EGR valve of my Accord was clogged solid, it took a hard push of a screw driver to clear it. So far so good. Cheers
Bought a 01 accord v6 and I was having this issue for the longest. I cleaned it 6 times and that didn’t fix. Then I realized the EGR wasn’t the OEM one... bought one from the junk and BOOM! Fixed
Fantastic video! Much appreciate the detailed steps, torquing sequence and torque values of the intake manifold bolts. I will be using this video as a reference when I perform the same procedure on my 1999 Honda Accord V6.
Thanks you... I've been looking everywhere on how to open this one. And I finally did. Except the tubing to the air filter is so old, it crack to pieces when I pulled it off. EGR problem fixed but gotta buy that huge tube now
The EGR valve can be stripped for cleaning by undoing the 4 torx screws under the graphite/ fibre/metal gasket . You'll need a 7 mm spanner on the 4 nuts . The valve itself can be removed using the next larger size torx by holding the hex part of the solenoid through the apertures . Inside the EGR valve You will find a baffle that will stop the valve being cleaned properly by any other method . Using spray cleaners will not clean the back of the valve but may dislodge a lump of carbon that may wedge the valve open continuously causing hunting or loping at idle . The inside of the valve body particularly the seat can be cleaned factory fresh and you could even lap the valve to seat using fine paste . Reassembly is reverse order . Use a new OE gasket or make some using heavy duty glass reinforced silicon baking /barbecue sheet , 3 layers will reduce heat transfer from the valve to the solenoid and signal ,supply components .The valve normally cokes itself shut as it opens like an ordinary poppet valve into the transfer port to the inlet manifold and spends much of its time closed or just slightly open and I have seen them with the valve totally coked over . Many of the V6 parts are no longer available in the UK but just about anything peculiar to this model , like the ICM for instance can be made from other common Honda parts .
I want to thank you for sharing your skills with the public I learned how to do this through this video I am a rookie average mechanic but even I can say with certainty that motor sounded like shit run over twice .sounded like it need it oil .my Honda runs smooth this motor was running either dry or rough .
Very good!!!!, but one thing I do, I used compressed air to clean the manifold passages, as well as through the EGR passageway on the engine, ... if you do not have a compressed air source, another thing I do is to remove the EGR from the engine and run the engine, with varying rpm,.... amazing how much junk gets blown out of there. As a clogged EGR ( passages etc) causes an engine light, it does not pass state inspection. SO what I have been doing is blocking off the EGR by a thin metal plate ( made from a can lid). This stops exhaust flow from going through this passage. I get more HP also. Of course this causes the engine light to come on, but I am use to that. When inspection, is due, I then remove the plate ( this will be the first year I am doing this) and hope none of the passages will be clogged due to no exhaust recirulation through these passages. Will replace the EGR & reset the engine light, drive for the requisite 30 miles, then get it inspected. Once it passes, I will then put the block plate back on. Once a year hassle, but so much easier than doing the above work which I use to do every year, and paying for the gasket, and new EGR. I have had the opening in the manifold bored out and had placed a larger tube in ( Honda's work around this sad engineering design) but really has not helped. For me, this clogging seems to effect the EGR, which even with EGR cleaning would not help. So a new EGR when I take the plate off (this time) during inspection, and again, replace the blocking plate after inspection.
@@IgorKadulenkov An update....Well, before inspection in July, I took the plate off, ran the engine with varying rpm's, put the egr back on without the plate, reset my engine light... drove 60 miles to make sure the computer will recycle, took car to be inspected, it passed!, Came home and later put the metal plate back on. Saved me a cleaning of the manifold etc!!!
I see you using the stick magnet and I see a man who is tired of retrieving fallen nuts and bolts. I have a Jeep wrangler with TWO 15mm sockets way down in a frame rail...
Thanks for the video. My homda has this code on definitely gonna do this myself instead of spending 300 bucks. Really thanks alot for this video.God bless brother
Thanks for making this video. Although I must say I'm less than thrilled that I've got to pull my intake off to do this. I went into it thinking I simply needed to remove the valve itself and clean it. Oh well. I guess that'd be too easy huh?
Thanks! I had already bought a new EGR valve but that wouldn't have fixed it. The EGR port was completely blocked. I replaced the valve since I had it and it was tore down this far.
Great video. I believe I am in severe need of EGR cleaning and maybe replacing. I have problems with idle going down (sometimes stopping the engine), low performance and insanely higher fuel usage. I wish I had the tools and experience to do this myself but I will have to find a good mechanic to do it instead. Hopefully it'll turn out well.
@@miguelitocunsuelo7200 Hey. I did get the cleaning done by a mechanic in addition to valve adjustment. I’m not 100% sure about how they did it since I wasn’t at the shop while they were doing it. I believe they actually took out the EGR valve and cleaned it with chemicals, not sure which ones. After the work (including valve adjustment) all my problems were gone. I’m glad I had it done. As for the price I don’t think it would be a good example since I live in Turkey. The cars here are very expensive compared to US while repairs are a lot cheaper.
2:56 what is that little hose to the left called and where does it connect to? Also what does it do? Pls help bc my car shuts off sometimes when it’s connect and when I take off the hose it turns on just fine
I don't think you're cleaning the EGR port here --> 5:10 If you look at the front cylinder head (viewed from driver's side fender) you will see the EGR valve is mounted to a water passage/pipe at the lower left corner of front cylinder head and the port from EGR valve to front head is at the lower left corner of cylinder head (viewed from driver side fender). I'm not sure what plugs into the lower RIGHT side of the cylinder head but the port you are digging in @ 5:10 is on the right side of the head. Again, the EGR outlet from the water passage mounts to a hole in the LOWER LEFT section of front cylinder head
Can anyone tell me what there Honda was doing before cleaning all this out ? I’m starts to bog when I give it gas after 30 mins of driving it and wants to die out 😢
So I did everything step-by-step in the video. However, I did not have a torque tool. How important is that? Because now my car is stuttering and requires maintenance lol great video by the way! I just suck at this kind of stuff
I have done this several times but you must clean the passage between the intake and the EGR. I use an old speedometer cable connected ti a drill. Start with the square opening at the (removed) EGR and work the cable as you slowly turn the cable with the drill. It will push through and finally come out the top of the intake port-intake removed, of course. At that point, you can pull it back and forth and spray carb cleaner down the passage. Put a rag over the hole at the EGR end and blow compressed air through the port. A LOT of stuff will come out. DO THIS OF YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT. I AM NOT TELLING YOU TO DO THIS, JUST SAYING WHAT I DID. I kept doing this until nothing would come out. Remove the cable, reassemble-no CEL now for thousands of miles. Good luck!
after the intake manifold, that hole that was caked with carbon goes into the water passage on the driver's side. when I took mine apart that part was caked with carbon too, get new metal gaskets when you do and replace the giant o-rings on the giant water pipe from the passage to the engine
Great video. Congrats Igor. Top class instruction and enough detail to guide even the rankest amateur without loading too much technical stuff .onto the video. Great idea to illustrate the undo and tighten sequences. One query. In Australia I am not sure about the liquid you are using to clean out chambers etc. Is it available outside the USA?
Thank you Doug! You can use any carb or throttle body cleaner. I did a quick search on Australian sites, something like that for instance www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/nulon-nulon-throttle-body-and-carby-cleaner---400g/9805.html?cgid=SCA01080301#segment=1&page=1
your video is extremely helpful. but could you plz tell me what the sensor is on the back of the head? I found there is no gasket in mine when I pulled it open. and the hose to the left, exactly what is that called? my clamp is in horrible shape. thank you so much ahead of time.
could carbon build up lead to compression being sent to top of motor therefore sending oil to top of my motor. this motor to be exact, I replaced egr valve code went away, but i am having 3 cylinders misfire with oil being found when i pulled out the spark plugs if you have any idea why this is happening, would much appreciate the advice🙏🏻
Now this doesn’t LOOK difficult at all, but looks like it’ll take me a good 4-6 hrs to do 💯 gotta get a torque wrench 💪🏾 what size torque wrench should I purchase?

Very thorough with details and instruction. Plus, camera work and illustration detail save me a lot of time and money.
+Omid Feghahati thanks and good luck !
I think I saw it in some video about 10 years ago and have been using it ever since. Magnet is the most important tool, when working with a car.
Cleaned passages. Cleared code. So far so good. Easy job. Took one hour(I'm kinda slow!)
matter of fact approach, great pictures, thank you and you have my subscription!!
Excellent video. Well done with good instruction. Thank you very much , as i have a 2000 Accord V6 with same issue.
Great video. I would not have even considered trying this before, but watching you and following the instructions, I feel confident I can do this. Thanks, Igor!
Well igor I did it too. Problem fixed. The moment I started the car the cod disappeared, didn't had to reset it. Thanks a lot you are the best.
Thanks! Glad it worked for you!
DIY
This is absolutely fantastic work. Thank you sir.
Fixed
Awesome
Thank you sir for this v/clip. It useful and I have an experience for maintaining my car today Jan/27/2020.👍
Do another v/clips Sir.
Really good video compared to others. Good job man!
Fantastic video! Much appreciate the detailed steps, torquing sequence and torque values of the intake manifold bolts. I will be using this video as a reference when I perform the same procedure on my 1999 Honda Accord V6.
Excellent video, thinking about trying this myself this weekend! This video has given me a lot of confidence, doesn't look too difficult to do.
Thank you so much! This saved me a ton of money. Thank you thank you!
Thanks you... I've been looking everywhere on how to open this one. And I finally did. Except the tubing to the air filter is so old, it crack to pieces when I pulled it off. EGR problem fixed but gotta buy that huge tube now
Good teacher. I learn something, thanks for sharing this video
Egr clogged fill with Oil, at first I thought some kind of oil hose connection but aft watching ur video I goona clean it top to bottom 👍👍👍
Worked like a charm! Thank you
I want to thank you for sharing your skills with the public I learned how to do this through this video
I am a rookie average mechanic but even I can say with certainty that motor sounded like shit run over twice .sounded like it need it oil .my Honda runs smooth this motor was running either dry or rough .
Right on Brother
1998-2001 Honda J Series engine was such a beauty
To do this job could you list the tools needed. I'm a newbie. Thanks in advanced.
Well done, I like your patience and precision. Torque wrench proper sequence
Great suggestions, thank you!
@@msach4277 AWSOME - but you do have to plug up the Vacuum line Right .. to the EGR
AWSOME
One day the light might burn out 🤔
Thanks for the awesome video. Got me through all the steps without any problems.
Thanks for this video. I performed the work and I was able to keep the check engine light off.
Thank u so much made the job so easy , my car so much more power. Thank u
I see you using the stick magnet and I see a man who is tired of retrieving fallen nuts and bolts. I have a Jeep wrangler with TWO 15mm sockets way down in a frame rail...
lmao
Thank you very much! My ports were completely clogged!
Thanks bro, Sweet Camera Work too! hope this cars still holding up!
Where the EGR is mounted does it need to be cleaned or cleared out as well?
Yes that should also be checked and cleaned if necessary. Something this guy should have done or elaborated more on.
“If necessary “, egr is not usually a bottleneck.
Thanks! I had already bought a new EGR valve but that wouldn't have fixed it. The EGR port was completely blocked. I replaced the valve since I had it and it was tore down this far.
Great video. Saved me hundreds!
Hey there. Did you get this done by a mechanic? If so. How much did it end up costing? And what exactly did they do?
@@miguelitocunsuelo7200 Hey. I did get the cleaning done by a mechanic in addition to valve adjustment. I’m not 100% sure about how they did it since I wasn’t at the shop while they were doing it. I believe they actually took out the EGR valve and cleaned it with chemicals, not sure which ones. After the work (including valve adjustment) all my problems were gone. I’m glad I had it done.
As for the price I don’t think it would be a good example since I live in Turkey. The cars here are very expensive compared to US while repairs are a lot cheaper.
@@selimthedream what issues did you experience before cleaning?
Thanks for the post i got to do the same thing to my Honda prelude.
Thank you for helping me through this. Great video too
2:56 what is that little hose to the left called and where does it connect to? Also what does it do? Pls help bc my car shuts off sometimes when it’s connect and when I take off the hose it turns on just fine
Wowwww!!! THANKS A LOT!!!!!! You save me from some mechanicganters!!! They told me a lot of crazy things about that!!! YEAHHH.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🥇
Thank you for the tutorial......I will do this today. One question.... Why does the TCS light get triggered as well
this guy takes it much further th-cam.com/video/cQZJC_lcQrw/w-d-xo.html
Have to say this video is better than scottys
Thank you for the video, could you please list the sizes of the tools you need to do this?
I don't think you're cleaning the EGR port here --> 5:10
If you look at the front cylinder head (viewed from driver's side fender) you will see the EGR valve is mounted to a water passage/pipe at the lower left corner of front cylinder head and the port from EGR valve to front head is at the lower left corner of cylinder head (viewed from driver side fender).
I'm not sure what plugs into the lower RIGHT side of the cylinder head but the port you are digging in @ 5:10 is on the right side of the head.
Again, the EGR outlet from the water passage mounts to a hole in the LOWER LEFT section of front cylinder head
Thanks for the video. I can't find a throttle body for mine anywhere. It's all I need to get my car on the road again.
Your awesome. Saved me a bunch of money. Easy fix too. thanks
Can anyone tell me what there Honda was doing before cleaning all this out ? I’m starts to bog when I give it gas after 30 mins of driving it and wants to die out 😢
Ive experienced this. Its very random. Only happens every couple months.
Life saver! So easy to follow thank you so much!
Did you take the EGR valve off before you cleaned the port because i can't see the valve
So I did everything step-by-step in the video. However, I did not have a torque tool. How important is that? Because now my car is stuttering and requires maintenance lol great video by the way! I just suck at this kind of stuff
Great video. Thanks. 👏👏👏👏👏
Good luck!
I remember me and my brother used to clean this once every 6 months.
after the intake manifold, that hole that was caked with carbon goes into the water passage on the driver's side. when I took mine apart that part was caked with carbon too, get new metal gaskets when you do and replace the giant o-rings on the giant water pipe from the passage to the engine
Hey Igor... Thanks for the video. Can you provide a list of tools and cleaner I'll need to accomplish this? Thank you.
Thank you so much for your nice details video
Y
your video is extremely helpful. but could you plz tell me what the sensor is on the back of the head? I found there is no gasket in mine when I pulled it open. and the hose to the left, exactly what is that called? my clamp is in horrible shape. thank you so much ahead of time.
+gwcs1218 hi. Thanks for feedback. I believe this is PCV valve, and the hose is called "pcv hose"
Igor Kadulenkov thank you so much I wasn't sure!
could carbon build up lead to compression being sent to top of motor therefore sending oil to top of my motor. this motor to be exact, I replaced egr valve code went away, but i am having 3 cylinders misfire with oil being found when i pulled out the spark plugs if you have any idea why this is happening, would much appreciate the advice🙏🏻
Thank you so much for the video
Now this doesn’t LOOK difficult at all, but looks like it’ll take me a good 4-6 hrs to do 💯 gotta get a torque wrench 💪🏾 what size torque wrench should I purchase?
Thanks for this awesome video. Need to do this on my neighbors car. Can I clean the egr to while iam there
Can you and should you use carb cleaner for the other holes in the intake manifold?
In my understanding it usually gets clogged in the holes shown on the video , I don't think you need to clean anything else
Shout out to you for the paper trick!!!!
