Tchaikovsky’s music is the love that never gets old or tired and just refuses to die away

This piece in my opinion is one of Tchaikovsky's greatest masterpieces and there is something very interesting worth mentioning about it. It was composed in 1873 at which time Tchaikovsky had not yet seen an ocean and maybe not even a body of water larger than a lake, yet the music vividly depicts crashing waves and a violent storm at sea.

Why, oh why, is this great masterpiece by our great Tchaikovsky so neglected and rarely played? It really is a shame! 🤔🤔🤔🤔

At the beginning of his work, representing the sea, Tchaikovsky creates an organ-like sonorous texture, where sounds in counterpoint resemble the endless sequence of crashing waves. Tchaikovsky was an incomparable orchestrator, a true creator of new sonorities, melodies, bustling rhythmic dynamics and expressive symphonic narrative.

A genuine masterpiece by Tchaikovsky and so neglected! Miranda's theme is one of Tchaikovsky's most sensuous and beautiful creations. If you listen to this piece repeatedly, you may even favour it more than Romeo and Juliet - although who would be without either. Wonderful music and played with passion here by this glorious orchestra and very talented young conductor. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful performance.

+ComposerInUK I do completely agree with you that this is a masterpiece, unfortunately not very well known... I had a lot of fun conducting it. Thanks for your compliment about my conducting!

The Miranda theme, first played at 9:35 is one of Tchaikovsky's greatest thematic creations. I think it's on a par with the love theme from Romeo and Juliet. Just listen and if you're not moved, then you and I could never be friends... :)

Just lovely. It could only be Tchaikovsky, couldn't it? And melodic as only he was.

A beautiful performance, superbly conducted. This is a sorely neglected masterpiece.

    • @abe_48
      @abe_48 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is not neglected. Tchaikovsky has so many beautiful masterpieces that could not all be accommodated into repertoires in order to make room for other composers; whether people like it or not. But here in the USA, you hear a lot of Tchaikovsky and Chopin or Rachmaninov during the fund-raising events, as if to lure you to part with your money by offering the best of the best only for a brief period.

@@abe_48 If you compare the number of performances with that of ``Romeo & Juliet`` then it is most certainly neglected.

@@paullewis2413.. far too much really good music by Tchaikovsky is not played for us.. (outside of his top ten).. there are still many works and pieces we should hear, from orchestra to piano.. glad to hear its different in America (someone said). He wrote so much good stuff we should hear a lot more of.. (this is not Berlin Vienna London new York paris Moscow) its Flanders.. thankyou flanders! (sorry just rather gets me).

Excellent performance and conductor. The opening reminds me of some of the textures in "En Saga" (Sibelius), even though this was of course a later work. It's a wonderful evocation of the sea, and I never cease to be amazed by the resourcefulness of Tchaikovsky's orchestration, both here and throughout.

A magnificent performance of a relatively seldom heard but no less dynamic of Tchaikovsky’s “fantasia” works. This is an excellent orchestra, with all involved in the production fully manifest in this video concert hall performance, with superlative musicianship, wonderful phrasing and excellent sonics worthy of any major orchestra anywhere. Also evidently a talented, sensitive young conductor worth noting in future.

By any standards this is a truly great performance from a very promising conductor and a very good orchestra. Congratulations to all. I hope we hear a lot more from this young conductor on the international scene, he is clearly a major talent not some hyped up quasi-talent.

Too often overshadowed by the Romeo and Juliette Overture, this is at least its equal and in some respects superior. Glorious music by the greatest of the Russian romantics (Rachmaninov perhaps in a tie)

It's a work such as this that proves the absolute lie perpetrated by some that because of his enormous universal popularity, Tchaikovsky is not of the first rank in the pantheon of composers. The Tempest and Francesca da Rimini to name two of my favourites are among the finest orchestral works ever written, melodically, structurally and as top examples of orchestration. Outstanding performance from this young conductor and orchestra.

The strings did a great job with the arpeggios in the beginning (and end). It should sound like a piano with the sustain pedal on.
Other versions make it sound technical, instead of atmospheric.

Thanks for the upload. This great overture by Tchaikovsky (my favourite as it happens) is absurdly neglected and I cannot see any logical reason for this. It is very bit as good as R. & J. which is constantly heard, even Hamlet another somewhat neglected masterpiece, gets more performances. Very exciting performance and it's always great to see young talent such as the conductor here, who I understand was assistant with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, a really great orchestra. The future of "real" music is in the hands of these people.

+cameronpaul: I couldn't agree with you more. It is genuinely heartbreaking and Miranda's theme must surely be counted among Tchaikovsky's greatest melodic inventions... Good to hear from another fan!

My guess is that the story is not as famous, the tempest play doesn't feature an ~*~*~*oh so dramatic~*~*~* love story which ends up in both the protagonists killing themselves (because of course there's nothing more dramatic than tragic death in a romance esp if not one but both of them die) so it's not as well known. I totally agree that it's every bit the musical equal of Romeo and Juliet though, I love it
