    Nothing like spending the day on the water fishing with your buddies. Especially when you get on some good fish. Nice video as usual.

    Hello John, great video as always… I've learned a lot watching means please keep them coming!
    A set up question… I use the same set up as you. Braided line to a swivel… Leader to a TA clip. But it seems like the swivel is beating up my rods. I've have three different rod and all three have had guides pop out and even one entire tip come off.
    Is there a type of rod or a specific make and model you recommend that will prevent this?

    There's something about blackfishing that brings out the ball busting in everyone! Great video, a lot of fun to watch. Gonna go out this weekend, and screw it, I'll try the jig. I usually use the snafu rig with a whole white legger.

    • @fshng2fish
      @fshng2fish 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you loose more rigs with snafu vs single hook?

    • @Engineer_Heathen
      @Engineer_Heathen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      fshng2fish not that I've noticed. I actually get hung up less than ppl using one hook for some reason. And I fish in some very sticky structure. Once I switched to the snafu rig I've caught many more 10+ pound fish than I did with a single hook. Works best with white leggers. I've also used the slider rig but I'm not a fan.

    Time index 12:13: “waiting to feel the fish “pick it up . . .” Can someone describe that feeling? Taps I know, but “pick it up?” Does line go slack or something, feel a bit of tug? I’m curious. Thx.

    • @26halkman
      @26halkman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ST Richards it can feel like your line swimming away OR your line can just go slack (they either swim up or towards you). It's a very subtle feeling and difficult to describe.......

    • @johnsweeney1400
      @johnsweeney1400 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can add to this by saying if you have ever crabbed by hand with a line, it's the same as when the crab takes the bait and you notice it moving along the bottom at a smooth pace.

    at 6:10 you say it's quite a battle cause the other guys using 10lb braid. Why? is it jut because they need to be more careful applying pressure as it could break? thanks.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. 10# is kind of light for this, but allows use of the lightest weight jigs. When you hook a big one, too much pressure breaks the line, and too little allows the fish to cut you off on bottom structure.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In shallower/lighter I think I'd prefer the slow pitch. My plan for the next trip is 10# on the slow pitch, and 15 again on the slimwave. You might want to check out that 6' 4'' slimwave. Specs look good.

      Yes prior to that it was being pointed out that my only usefulness on the trip was to allow for a larger combined bag limit for them to fill. It turned around for me when I switched to the white crabs. When the bite was really on, they hit everything. Fun trip for sure.

    • @RogueWave1003
      @RogueWave1003 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's something about blackfishing that brings out the ballbusting more than any other kind of fishing. Not sure why, but it's certainly an established phenomenon.

    Boy John, I wish I could find fish like that on the South Shore! I've been trailing my boat (17' Sea Way, Center Console) to Captree most of the time and have been meaning to explore available ramps on the North Shore. (Looks like this is the start of my exploration.) Do you know of any that you do not need a permit for? Or are there any that I might qualify to get a permit? I live in Great River on the South Shore. Love your stuff and I learn a lot. Thanks ahead of time. - Jeff

    Why do the use such light tackle especially when they are fishing for blackfish?

    • @johnsweeney1400
      @johnsweeney1400 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just more fun for me. With the light tackle I can feel the difference between a bergall, sea bass, porgy or black fish. I had a 5/8 oz jig on for the day and most of my black fish picked up the jig and swam away with it. I could watch my line moving through the water, then set.

    • @26halkman
      @26halkman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why wouldn't you if you could? A LOT more fun than heavy conventional gear and I'm convinced you actually catch bigger fish. As John Sweeney pointed out, the bigger blackfish can pick up a light jig and swim away with it. Good luck doing that with a bottom rig with heavy lead.....they feel the weight and spit the bait.....

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And to add to what the other Johns said, those light jig weights under those conditions were only possible with very thin line, like 10 or 15-pound-test. Those lighter lines require lighter rods. In that setting, the result is more fish and a heck of a lot of fun.
