Same man. I cannot imagine being that cruel to someone. Like I don’t mind to take extra shifts or lose a couple thousand dollars for someone to go and grieve over a loved being they lost
i have a friend who worked at a private pre-school as a teacher's assistant (so not even the actual teacher), and they told her they might fire her when she left early one day to go see her dying grandmother one more time in the hospital. i dont see how some people can care so little about others, but she ended up quitting anyway so their actions lost them a good employee
There’s a guy on TH-cam who talks about red flags at interviews and such, I forget his name but that exact phrase is one he said to be on the look out for in interviews.
There is a reason for this. I will use my own personal life experience as an example… My stepfather tried to shoot me twice; I was supposed to be in the twin towers on 9/11 but changed my meeting the day before to a different location; I was almost killed in a home invasion; and a few other things too heartbreaking to mention. All of these things cause me to have horrible panic attacks multiple times a day ( which sucks so much). I say this all to explain the following: It is said that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. What they don’t say is heartaches and trauma can either destroy you or MAKE YOU REALIZE how precious and fragile life is and how helping others and being appreciative of every moment is the reason to still smile and help others avoid as much heartache as possible
I lost my Dad in April after a battle with extremely aggressive carcinoma. Not only did the company give me time off with pay, they also provided meals for my family almost every single day so that we didn't have to cook while we mourned. Sent flowers and bouquets to the funeral and offered grief counseling as well. It was a blessing to have that kind of support. I had already thought they were an amazing company to work for before all of that, but they showed more compassion than I could have imagined.
My Company was absolutely sympathetic to deaths in my family. I feel empathy for this young man's plight.... but I can't help but think there were other factors in his termination, rather than this one instance. If not.. then he is better off without them.
We had an employee whose daughter died 2 weeks after birth. He was gone for 2 weeks. we paid him 40 hrs each week and never touched his vacation or sick pay. We also closed early, and all went to the funeral to show support.
That's how it should be done for such a tragedy. Because we're all just passing though, and that small blip in payroll/productivity will not register or be remembered down the road. Whereas the loss of a child will affect that employee indefinitely
That's the boss everyone needs. i don't think people understand that when you have a boss thats willing to do so much for you, you are willing to do as much as you can for them.
this guy on the right that hated to ask how he lost his daughter… you could see the emotion stirring up inside of him, like a lump in his throat was forming. Bless.
i quit a job because they told me i couldn’t take the day off to go to my grandmothers funeral because i didn’t give three weeks notice that my grandma would be dying. the very next day that manager was fired after i told corporate what she’d said and i got my job back with a raise.
Glad you had the courage to stand up to the puffed up little punk. And I'm surprised but glad corporate reached out to you after showing him the door. It's really rare to hear that kind of thing. Hope things getting easier for you and anyone else who finds them selves in that situation.
@@garfield2439Don't you know? To live in the US you need to be psychic and have extreme foresight for everything from avoiding car crashes to preventing injuries to mourning before the death of a loved one so you can work directly after, it comes in your birth contract after you sign away your free time for a SSN and hospital debt 😂
When my daughter died, I couldn't do anything. I sat on my ass and drank everyday for a year... Terrible what this company did to this guy, but I'm glad he's in a better position now. Hope he's doing good mentally
When my Wife passed away in 2019 I wanted to go back to work after 3 days because I have a family to support but my boss refused and paid me 40 hours a week plus he paid all my bills and raised money to help me pay for funeral expenses. And if that weren't enough he gave me $1,000 out of his own pocket for anything extra I needed for my kids and myself. I've been blessed to have some pretty incredible bosses.
Wrongful termination suit is probably look up your states laws regarding it. A lot of free consults for these cases or lawyers who work on the percentage of take and don’t charge retainer.
@@yourdadsotherfamily3530 Lol, most states are “fire at will.” Wrongful termination only happens when they fire you for things such as belief, race, etc etc. Sigh,
@@captainomoplata643 I suppose you also believe HR are there to help employees. I was with an employer for over a year, never called out and was never late, my gran was rushed into hospital because she had a stroke, I told my manager that my gran was in hospital immediately and that I wouldn't be at work tomorrow. My managers response was "work should always be your priority, if you don't turn up tomorrow, don't come back Monday. Some people are just assholes. I went to visit my gran in hospital and on Monday just went back into the office and sat down at my desk. I loved the job and my colleagues, not my manager though. I went to HR too, they helped me, but it was only to help the company.
Firing an employee for needing to leave due to family emergencies should be illegal. It’s so wrong. Poor guy. I hope he now has a better job where he is treated properly.
It is illegal, but its a law that is very hard to enforce, I’m sure they didn’t say the reason they fired him was being absent that one day, they must have written something about how he has always been a terrible employee and how the decision was made long before that day, proving that this was unfair and because of his absence that one day would be very difficult in court, and I doubt he had the money to do that, so most people fall through the loopholes and dont do anything
When my wife was in nursing school just a couple years back, one of her professors had told the class about how she used to work for a hospital as an RN and was fired for calling off due to having pnemonia. She had proper documentation and excuses, but it didnt matter. So she sued the hospital and won. Apprently she is stupid rich now with 3 homes across the globe. So there must be some legality issues with wrongfully firing someone here in Ohio
My twin sister was stillborn. We never got told where she was buried (given it was the 70’s she could even have been placed in an adult’s coffin with them 🤷♀️), I am beyond happy and grateful that this man and his fiancée know where their daughter is and plan on being next to her when they pass. It’s comforting to know things have changed.
I had a coworker lose their daughter like that, instead of getting let go, the company offered maternity and bereavement leave combined. That’s how you show compassion and do what’s right.
@gamershadow8 But even that depends on whether U R working for an at will company or not because working for an at will employer, they don't have to give U that. At will employers don't offer that typically because they don't have to. There is no law that says at will employers have to offer that. I know because I ised to work for an at will employer. At will simply means they can hire and fire AT WILL
Lost my girlfriend of 3 years to a drunk driver on a Sunday night, didn’t get the news until Monday morning 8am and I was already 2 hours into a shift at work. Boss gave me 2 weeks off one week paid. Told me come back when my head was straight. I will never forget Charlie Smith for his understanding and compassion
That's the thing. Even if I were a souless boss that felt no compassion, I would still send the person home and not make them come in because there is no shot they will be working at even 50% during things like that.
I knew a coworker whose 1 year old daughter fell down the stairs while she was at work. Our supervisor wouldn't even let her leave to meet her mother at the hospital, and the baby was unconscious. He told her if she leave not to come back. I told her to heck with this job, and your baby is unconscious leave now. I told him Karma was coming for him. A year later, his son fell at school and broke his arm. He flew out the door. The mentality of upper management.
That’s because the majority of upper management is full of selfish, manipulative, narcissistic sociopaths. They’re the best at getting to the top of the cooperates ladder, because they don’t care who they have to step on or knock off to get to the top.
Fuck 'em. They won't actually fire you or they will beg you to come back because they don't want to do the job themselves or they're hella lacking in employees.
Supervisors aren't upper management lol. Middle management at best. I don't know why people want to leave go see their people in hospitals anyhow. It's not like your presence is going to heal them. You're not the sky daddy. He was right to say that your friend shouldn't come back if she left. He shouldn't come back either though.
I worked for a company for 15 years because they treated people so well even after getting several offers for better money. Working for an employer that cares about you is so rare. This was a mid sized company with about 80 employees and when one of the employees who was at an entry level position, was diagnosed with cancer, they kept him on the payroll for 18 months during his battle. He had surgery after surgery and couldn't work. They weren't hoping he would come back. They knew better. They did it because they knew his family couldn't handle the bills without insurance and a paycheck coming in. After he passed, they sent a final check to his family. I'm not sure about the amount but from what I hear, it was generous. Good companies exist but they are rare.
Yeah, ig I found a place like that I'd give my 110% and you couldn't get me to leave. Instead, I know that hard work is punished with more work, and a no is punished with bullying or unlawful firing
@@dflaming1371 I have found a company like that, that i'm currently working for, but they don't pay enough. I dread it. Bc i don't make enough to live. I have to find something better and i just know whatever i find i'm going to hate. Fuck working man. All of this shit sucks.
If i ever start a company, i hope i make it so i can rule with a firm fist of compassion being number 1, safety number 2, and greed number 3. Numbers 1 and 2 are interchangable depending on the situation, and number 3 almost never changing places with 1 or 2 unless someones self destructive and unfocused behavior brings everyone else around them down. But then number 3 would absolutely tie in with number 1 and 2 at the same time.
@sei.tsukino yeah pretty much, but it's funny cause I only thought of that line from the movie, it's one of my all time favorite scenes and it depicts the bs like you said. It's just a way their mind tries to excuse the bullshit behavior.
Ended up getting diagnosed with a very treatable form of cancer 4 months into my employment. Needed some time off, wasn’t sure if I would have a job to come back to. Not only did the hold my job for me but called me every other day to check in but sent a few dinners over for me and my family a few times. Thank god I work for a small family business who really care about their employees
@@praefectus6492 You mean the same shops that will lay off all their minimum wage employees during covid while at the same time pocketing that PPP loan that was forgiven.
Shows you how they don’t really care about us and only care about the green. That’s why corporate greed has gotten out of control and the wage gap is as big as it has ever been. People at the bottom can’t even afford rent and people at the top are buying million dollar yachts. It’s so sad.
That's not just "some" employers. It's the whole system of the US, which has taken capitalism to a greedy extreme and turned it into a cultural force in order to keep the privileged people at the top privileged.
When my dad was dying of brain cancer my mother quit her job to take care of him. A month after he passed her job called my mom and told her her position was still available if she wanted it. They waited a whole year for my mother. Those are the kind of people I'd like to work for.

my first grandbaby was a miscarriage. I went to work but I was not with it. I told my boss about it that morning and I was not making my crew work their ass off that day like normal so my boss calls me up a few hours later and was bitching at me about being slow that day...that was the last day I worked there. @@GoodBoyGoneDad Depending on what state that guy was working in when he got fired he could've sued. Some states allow employers to fire for any or no reason without compensation. If you have an idea you think would work better than Capitalism then please, do tell.
@@GameChanger597 well it has a little to do with capitalism. The way every company is structured so that every level has to please the above level, no matter what ,takes it to decisions like that. The person that fired this guy probably had pressure from the above levels aswell. But yeah.. people being pathetic rats is 99% of the problem.
When my Mother passed away in another state, my Employer gave me a company vehicle to drive, 2 cell phones to take with me, and a company gas card. Told me to take as much time as I needed. A flower arrangement from the company at the funeral was another surprise. I spent the week there with my daughter and drove back on the weekend, back to work on Monday. I will never forget the kindness and consideration.

It’s amazing that kindness gets no attention once or ever..not criticising those comments of stories and positions of lack of humanity and where is just pain and suffer but this should be the example of a boss if he still didn’t get it
My father passed away fifteen years ago, and the company I worked with at the time said to take all the time I needed. On the day of my father's funeral, we were all seated when I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. When I turned, I saw the entire management team standing tall in the rear of the room, paying their respects. June 17 ... Update: I'd like to thank you all for your generous and thoughtful responses. This was a human services company that I worked for, and yes, it really existed. I worked with them for quite a while until I accepted a position in another state. Less than one year later, I was diagnosed with cancer, and I eventually had to retire. But the lessons I took from my experiences still remind me to pay forward to those when they need it the most and expect it the least.
Capcoor That's a rotten person, inside and out. Dang, they'll even let certain prisoners go to their Parent's or Children's funerals. Sorry for your loss.
I cry for the guy losing his daughter. I lost my wife & 5 month old daughter in an auto accident. I still think about that horrible loss to this day. I have faith I will see them both one day in Heaven.
My husband works for a steel company and had his legs crushed by over 30,000 lbs of steel. He was airlifted to a trauma hospital. My work told me after a few days that I had to get back to work because my supervisor was going to the beach and I was needed to fill in. We had just bought a house the week prior. I was trying to coordinate his home health nurses, run two houses. Move our stuff, etc. When my granddaughter passed away the day after she was born, my employer told me I had to come to work, and they have paid funeral leave. They acted like since it was a new born, that I didn't need to take off. I was the first person that held her, rocked her, sang to her, talked to her while she was fighting to live. Some employers are cruel.
When my nephew was diagnosed with terminal cancer his boss kept him on the payroll for as long as he could (major corporation) then put him on a Cobra plan. My nephew also got engaged after his diagnosis and when he went to pick up the ring, the shop owner came over, tore up the bill and said "Go home, ask your girl to marry you and get well". There are good people in this world.
I wish ALL EMPLOYERS & people in general had the hearts his boss & the owner of the jewelry shop had. Being cruel requires so much more energy… most people don’t understand that unfortunately. Being kind and helping others actually does just as much and for me personally, I feel more… for those that go out of their way to show someone else compassion & make them feel understood.
That is wonderful, yes, there is good people in the world. I try not to focus on the negative ones and try to remember to show kindness to strangers etc. You never know who needs to hear a kind word.
I can s0eak from experience here: when you've been through some big traumatic isht in life, that weird smile comes around when you talk about it. It's like you _have_ to smile or even laugh (it's usually a mirthless laugh) in order not to start crying about it. It's this weird, uncontrollable defense mechanism that kicks in. You know how in _Breaking Bad,_ there's that one episode where Walter devolves into this insane laughter after Skyler tells him she gave the money to Ted? It's like that. PS, Bryan Cranston did an AMAZING job in that scene.
I was a manager at a large, nationwide company. I did everything I could to make sure my guys were taken care of. They busted their backs to get the workload taken care of. Take care of and respect your people, and they will take care of and respect you. The corporation sure won't...
Something TOO many managers fail to realize! Fortunately my manager has compassion when I got the call that I had loss my soon to be born daughter(8.5 Months) He said go and really stood with us!
I 100% AGREE!!!! I managed Blockbuster Video back in the day and I always respected my crew. They always had my back plus they made it a great place to work
There's leaders and there's bosses, a leader treats everyone as equals while also getting down in the muck with their employees, a boss takes all the credit for the good stuff but will immediately point fingers and blame others for their own mistakes, you sir are a leader. When all the employees win then the company itself wins. Cheers Nate.
I had a damn good boss at the slaughter house, she took good cre of us, even the ones who shit in her face she still helped them, good bosses are extremely rare these days
I was a supervisor and one of our subordinates came running into the office saying his daughter was in a car wreck. I asked him where he left his things and then said go. I covered his area working four more hours than I was scheduled for. Some things you do because it's inhumane to not do them.
I worked at Target 1 year. While there, they fired a guy who got in a car accident, no call no show kuz he was in ICU. They wrote up another guy for missing too many days when his mom n brother died the same week (he missed 3 days), they asked a woman who'd been there 9 years to reschedule her surgery for cervical cancer, fired a woman who missed the bus n walked to work (30 mins late was always on time before). The list could go on. It was terrible. I ended up giving the assistant store manager some choice words n walking out. Seeing her cry was beautiful.
We had a coworker of 15 years pass away suddenly. Our boss gave us all the day off to mourn, and every year on the anniversary we take off a little early and go to his favorite fishing spot by the office to have a beer in his honor. RIP Tim, the sweetest guy ever ❣️
My grandmother had terminal cancer my mum needed to stay home to care for her.My mums boss paid her every week until she was able to return to work. He eventually lost his job for approving her weekly pay. I hope god blesses that man abundantly.
I once had an employer bring me to HR to question why I was off work so and when I explained to them my daughter was in the hospital from a severe asthma attack they then proceeded to say yes we understand but we have a business to run and need you hear ..so I just said ok well you can run it without me cause I happily resign my position and I just walked out of HR walked out the door of the building and just went home. Still one of the best days of my life
@Brittany Matthews you missed severe. I don’t think that’s just an adjective, I think their daughter is a severe asthmatic. Severe asthmatics have trouble with inhalers because of the intensity of the attacks, sometimes the inhalers just don’t work well enough. Especially as they get older and their body develops a resistance to the steroids. It wasn’t a minor incident, and he needed to take care of his daughter
I know how wonderful it feels! I did a similar at one of my little part time jobs. I only worked to fill the boredom while my daughters were in school. One daughter broke her arm … it was SO badly broken that a piece of bone was protruding through her skin. OF COURSE I had to take a couple of weeks off to care for her, but they didn’t like that. The day I went back to work I was ordered to go to the manager’s office. That b¡t’c wanted me to sign a write up for for being absent. I smiled sweetly took the form & in my beautiful handwriting signed F’Ck All Y’all! She finally noticed what it said about 3 hours later, called me over the intercom to come to the office immediately! I just went to the break room, grabbed my purse, flipped her off as I passed her office & left the building. It was always so interesting to run into her in town. She never spoke tho.

Surviving the loss of a child is a lot more rare than people understand. There's nothing in life that will ever challenge your will to live than losing the best part of yourself
Most employers know that very well. It are just the global corpos that do not believe in being humane because they themselves arent human but a bunch of frigging lizard people. Stay away from corpos
Yeah but psychopaths are attracted to manager positions because they enjoy having power over others, to them you might as well be robots and sadly most people don’t have the luxury of choosing who they work for.
When a company gets large enough it tends to become an institution. Some may try avoid it or pretend that it is not the case, usually feels manipulative to me. Humanity becomes a liability in many cases. At a certain size treating companies as humans is a mistake. They are institutions and suffer from the same limitations as government institutions. Negatives and positives , checks and balances. I will say imo, the scales seemed to have tipped too far to one side. Maybe its just my own focus tho. I enjoy humans, imperfect, non static , fluid. Humanity is closer to nature than is often perceived, if one is paying attention. I tend to avoid 2 dimensional outlooks, it feels inaccurate and missing depth. ....morning thoughts... I give myself time.
It’s always been that way. Wait, it’s even been worse. Slavery, child labor, forced labor in unsafe conditions. Everyone likes to think that the world is turning rotten. It’s always been there
So sorry for the loss of your wee daughter. Losing your income at the same time can only be traumatic and a huge shock. Hope that you will be happy again very soon and that all tears will be dried over time. All the very best wishes.
I can tell he's burying the trauma putting on a face. He's saying it but trying to externally not feel it by smiling trying not to connect to the words he said. He hasn't delt with it all yet. This is so horrible. I hope he's in more peace
This is crazy. My employers advised me to take a couple of days off when my mother died, literally told me take all the time you need and didnt discount anything from my salary. I will always remember that gesture
That’s amazing. I’m happy that you got the time you needed. Do you work in a chain-establishment? I feel like smaller places would be more willing, generally, so I’m curious.
@@greablood1072 I work for a relatively small fintech company so that may be the case and I'm lucky to live in a country where labor rights are quite good. Other factor may be that, being a small country, news travel super fast and treating employees like garbage eventually becomes public knowledge so even the international corporations avoid negative feedback.
I was running a job when my girlfriend was pregnant with twin daughters , she wasn’t doing well so I rushed her to the hospital. She was in such distress that the doctor was afraid of losing all 3 of them so they performed a c section and took the babies out over a month early, so now all 3 were in the hospital, I asked my boss for 2 weeks to be able to look after everything and get all the baby stuff together, and his response was “I’m thinking I didn’t hire the right person for the job because a dedicated person would be able to balance everything “ and then let me go the following week. That’s nothing compared to this guy losing his daughter, but I’m tired of keeping that inside I want to cast this out into the universe like a message in a bottle and let it go.
Ive had my share of bosses like that- a boss did something sort of similar to a coworker years ago and even fired the guy- but the guy he fired was like a major part of the regional work load and when the manager above the one who fired him found out- called him to do an exit interview and get the story..... well the firing manager was soon fired and the other guy was back. Some managers are literally on a power trip. Its true some employyees are problem employyees, make stuff up, ditch work etc and you get used to being tough on those kind- if you cant tell the difference and when to be a human its low intelligence and inability to differentiate in my view. I am sorry you went through that crap. I am older now and would never work for a manager like that, Once you get to a certain point you realize a job interview is for YOU to interview THEM- youre the one devoting your waking hours to the company- working yourself around the company and letting a COMPANY who doesnt care about you into your head, your home, and you will be relying on them to work for YOUR life.
Maybe it was the universe’s way of getting you out from under the boss. They’re people, just as prone to failure and flaw, with even more incentive to be jerks. Hope your family is well and you found a place that understands the job isn’t the highest priority in your life.
I hope you know now that your family with always be above work. I think u know that already by the way you worded your comment. But I want you to know I’m rooting for the health, happiness, and security of ur family. It’s so hard to deal with bosses that take away ur livelihood like that. You most likely have a civil or criminal case if u wanted to take it to that level (which I think u should if u can). But overall, I wish ur family health and happiness 💕

That’s ridiculous!! Even if the daughter didn’t pass away, wouldn’t he deserve to be at the hospital for her birth? These employers don’t care about anything or anyone else. So sad.
@@FuriousImp least how I’ve been that close to management and a supervisor/lead, it’s not always the decision of one manager or your supervisor to make budget cuts and usually before benefits or a raise kicks in, sometimes it’s a collective decision from their superiors and they just use the very next thing whatever it may be as an excuse to terminate you, I’ve been on the receiving end of this as well, and if a manger does care and it’s like that they will usually keep it real with you and let you know ahead of time so your not just shit out of a job, and some even care enough to give you a full check as well, it’s not always the case but I’ve seen and experienced it before
When my son died, my boss told me, & enforced this, that I wasn't to come back to work for at least a month. Then we would revisit what I needed as to time off. I ended up going back about 2 weeks into the 2d month. However, what with the stress & grief, my health & my chronic acute Iron anemia all took a nosedive. After 3 weeks back, my boss drove me to my Dr & went with me to help me discuss all my options. Afterwards, he sent me home until everything stabilized, no matter how long it took. I tried to quit, felt it wasn't fair to him. I was the only paralegal for two attorneys, & they had 1 receptionist & 1,well, I'm not really sure if she had a job title, as she didn't seem to do much. About 3 weeks later, I told him I had to quit, it wasn't fair to him. Both of the attorneys refused to accept my resignation, just told me to stay home & get better. They kept me on the payroll (at 3/4ths pay) & kept my insurance current another13 Months!! I couldn't go back, & he knew it, I allowed my Dr. to all to my boss about my problems. He wouldn't even let me pack up my office, he kept hoping I'd be back. It was 22 months from my son's death before he finally realized I wouldn't be able to return. When I checked into packing my office, my office was *exactly* how I'd left it with the exception of 3 folders that had been on my desk. He had kept my office exactly how I'd left it for when I came back. Then he came in 1 packed it all for me so it wouldn't tire me out. Gave me a very surprising severance check, my desk, & my computer. I couldn't believe it. I'd never even *heard* of a boss acting like that. We've remained friends all these years & I go by the office a time or two every month just to say Hi & catch up with them. I miss that job, but I mostly miss my boss. His family & I had become close friends over the 13 years I'd worked with him. I wish all bosses could be more like him.
I'm so sorry you went through all of that. What a blessing that small company was to you. God bless those people for doing the right thing. Lawyers get a bad wrap but these were compassionate and kind people.
Its a very tragic thing to lose a child theres no name to it. But God gave you someone to continue having hope, that one person was there for you and gave you a family to rely on. May God bless both of you and that all negative energies be replaced with happiness and joy in your life. You’ll one day be reunited with your son. God loves you so much friend ❤️
I'm hoping I can buy the one next to my dad for my mom before anyone else can die who wants to be buried with our family. We kind of have plot in a row with my mom's parents, a special needs sister that died in her early twenties, a cousin of mine murdered in his late twenties, and another cousin found dead in her bed by her daughter(another cousin.) A lot of other family is in the cemetery, but from my mom's side. My dad is there because he asked to be. He was very close with my mom's family and her parents LOVED him(AFTER they asked him what he wanted with my mother because he met her when he went back to college....and he was nearly 16 years older...lucky he didn't get buried in the backyard the night he got introduced!!!)

My mother had a heart attack at work and they fired her because she couldn’t come back until she got a few days of bed rest. This is why you shouldn’t go above and beyond for any job. They’ll always replace you. Ridiculous. Sick people.

My daughter was born 1 month premature and couldn't regulate her temp. I spent 3 days with her skin to skin contact to make sure she survived. No sleep, no breaks. It was my duty. To lose a child like that is unimaginable pain. The ppl that fired him for that deserve the worst depths of hell
This is why im glad im not American. If the company tried that sort of crap in the UK they would have them in court. My grandfather died while i was at work (i didn't tell my boss) and a tried to soldier on through but was upset. By boss noticed asked what was wrong and when i told him was immediately give 3 payed days off (which lead me up to the weekend) for bereavement. Didn't have to do that by law and didn't even come out of my holiday allowance. and when it was time for the funeral they gave me an additional free payed day off.
@@dememeitized8048 we have our problems in that regard also. But there are laws in place to protect the workers although that is slowly being eroded by the conservatives in government. on the upside next year is a general election and 12 years of conservative rule has people fed up.

Black Friday seemed important so I’m thinking it’s a larger store like Best Buy or Walmart. Smaller stores don’t typically take black friday that seriously. I worked black friday at a french soup boutique and I was the ONLY ONE on shift those morning and got maybe 5 people in each time I worked a black friday. Small boutiques can’t afford “big blow out deals.” Fun bonus story: One of my regulars came in at 5AM and they said the classic, “I can’t believe they make you work so early!” I know she was just trying to be sympathetic BUT SHE WAS THERE WHICH WAS WHY I WAS THERE. lol, bless her heart, I hope she’s doing well. 😋
You're right! I don't know if America needs to unionize more or if we should demand that out government forces companies to supply employees with benefits, but all of us have these stories and something NEEDS to change.
In 2003 my oldest was born, my workplace of 6+ years told me if I left to be there for her birth they would fire me. They didn't get a chance, because I quit as soon as my boss said it. I was terrified of being unemployed with a brand new baby. But I was more terrified that I worked for an employer who would never value my family or life. One of the best choices I ever made.
I found out my father had passed and I just couldn't help but to show it the next day I work. I was the warehouse manager. I enjoyed my job so I thought just working through it would be helpful. When my boss came out and forced me to go home it really touched me. She knew I was hurting and needed time off work to grieve even though I didn't. She reached out to the owner and I was paid for that time off. I still appreciate her so much all these years later.
Lost my grandfather last year while I was pregnant. Went in to work the next day, had a mental breakdown, and my boss asked me why I didn’t just call out and sent me home.
So isn’t this a normal thing for you guys in the US? In my country we have a legal right to take the day or even a week off if a close family member dies. No questions asked. I live in a social democratic country where unions are always prevalent though. I know US corporations hate unions 😢 Capitalism without regulations is bad people. In my country you can still start a business just like in the states but your employees are also protected by many good laws. I do know you think us “communists” for these things, but we sure are living happier lives than most people in the US 😊 Social welfare is great when done right ❤
My dad was working for a small business in Poland. He was getting an average salary but under the table the owner would pay him extra (to pay less tax). When my dad was diagnosed with cancer and went on sick leave the state took over paying his salary at the official (lower) level. His boss would come every month to hand him the rest of the cash so that he had the same pay despite not working. This went on for over 6 months and when my dad passed away he would continue for some time to bring this money to my mom. I have respect for him for keeping to their arrangements
As someone who aspires to own a business this is how I would treat my employees It's people first then business where I come from.. Mad respect to the boss he is a real bossman
Lawsuit. Seriously. For wrongful termination. Easy win. What they did is completely illegal under federal law, IE, the Family Medical Leave Act. Same with bereavement time, also required by law. If all they care about is the bottom line, hit that line hard. Won't bring back their daughter, but it wpuld teach that company a lesson. What they pulled, they need one.
Yep! It's a business transaction at the end of the day. They pay you to do something. Don't fall for the "we are all family here" shit that companies say.
I had cancer and I needed a doctors note to be out of work . I had surgery. I needed a doctors note to come back to work, but my doctor said I wasn’t ready and wouldn’t give me a note. My job fired me while I was recovering and then fought me for unemployment. Don’t ever give your life to a job because that company doesn’t care about you or your life.
In most countries I know is illegal to fire an employee on vacation or medical licence ,(if that even exist in the USA) I don'treally understand how a properous nation like yours is so toxic in her work culture at least in cities, i've seen good work culture in countryside

That's wassup !! ❤
That was not only amazing but a very human way of handling things. The kind thing! Too bad "kind" has sort of faded out these days!
My Company was absolutely sympathetic to deaths in my family. I feel empathy for this young man's plight.... but I can't help but think there were other factors in his termination, rather than this one instance. If not.. then he is better off without them.
Wow, that is a classy company-true humanity. Very impressed a company like that exists. ❤
There's still good people out there and some really heartless ones to
We had an employee whose daughter died 2 weeks after birth. He was gone for 2 weeks. we paid him 40 hrs each week and never touched his vacation or sick pay. We also closed early, and all went to the funeral to show support.
That's how you do it
That's how it should be done for such a tragedy. Because we're all just passing though, and that small blip in payroll/productivity will not register or be remembered down the road. Whereas the loss of a child will affect that employee indefinitely

Firing an employee for needing to leave due to family emergencies should be illegal. It’s so wrong. Poor guy. I hope he now has a better job where he is treated properly.
It is in civilised countries.
it is illegal in Massachusetts,
there's also the family leave act which is fairly recent.
At will employers don't offer that typically because they don't have to. There is no law that says at will employers have to offer that. I know because I ised to work for an at will employer.
This situation I think you would have been able to sue that manager
That’s because the majority of upper management is full of selfish, manipulative, narcissistic sociopaths. They’re the best at getting to the top of the cooperates ladder, because they don’t care who they have to step on or knock off to get to the top.
Fuck 'em. They won't actually fire you or they will beg you to come back because they don't want to do the job themselves or they're hella lacking in employees.
Did you point out the hypocrisy to him at that time?
What a great company. ☘️

Cobra is ridiculously expensive I hope they cover that bill also!
So Great to hear your nephew was treated like we wish all ppl were treated. Especially in his time of need.
That is wonderful, yes, there is good people in the world. I try not to focus on the negative ones and try to remember to show kindness to strangers etc. You never know who needs to hear a kind word.
Sadly, good people stand out more because they are the exception rather than the rule.
So sorry for your loss. I cant even imagine the pain you both are going through

Still one of the best days of my life
Good for you. They're scum. ❤

When a company gets large enough it tends to become an institution. Some may try avoid it or pretend that it is not the case, usually feels manipulative to me. Humanity becomes a liability in many cases. At a certain size treating companies as humans is a mistake.

My response to him would’ve been “I don’t think I’m working for the RIGHT company” because my boss is a narcissistic A-hole” 😉
