Thank you, adjusting file caching fixed the problem for me in VLC 3.0.4, the subtitles are still a little weird but better than black subtitles in current VLC. Anyone reading this, I've had great luck with PotPlayer. I've only ever used VLC so switching feels weird but it's worth it to me until a fix is found for the subtitles.

Actually I don't really understand why VLC would not include it as an easier-to-see option (at first I thought that maybe my PC is too old and didn't even Google it @@), but knowing VLC can still be my choice to deal with all... media-stuffs made me like, *siiiign* =))))))

I've always been able to play any videos up to 1440p HD on my laptop without any problems, but get a bit of stuttering when playing 2160p HD music videos - not much (but enough to be annoying).
I carefully followed all the instructions and, honestly, it made little or no difference afterwards.
I have a very well-maintained (but 5 year old) laptop with only 4GB RAM and a 512GB HDD. 2160p HD videos play without any problems, but perhaps the age of my device and generation of processor stops 4K videos being played seemlessly.
You are using the maximum capacity of that pc already 👍
My problem is the video is playing smoothly,, and the background sound play ok too,but the main sound is muted, why? Can you explain

My obs records it perfectly no lag no nothing. But once its in my videos its laggy and looks nothing like the obs recording.

I AM TRYING TO PLAY VIDEOS CAPTURED ON MY CAMCORDERS SD CARD BUT AFTER DOING WHAT YOU SAID THEY STILL FREEZE UP...I HEAR THE AUDIO BUT THE PICTURE FREEZES! MY FILE CACHING (MS) WAS AT 1000 SO I SET IT TO 2000

Tengo un Laptop VAIO (Sony) core i3, con 222Gb libres.
This is happening because of lower cpu power and lack of ram & vram availability. For smoother performance laptop should have i5 latest generation with a dedicated GPU with 8 gb ram. 👍

Most of the time the problem arises because you are using 32 bit version of VLC and not 64 bit version (if your system is 64) that is it
Lit my problem. Got a new rig and made the simple mistake of installing 32bit instead of 64. Good save ffam.
My videos stopped working after I did this. Just saw one frame, no moving video. So I reversed everything. It seems the "automatic" setting needs to be on "disable." BTW, I'm trying to play a 30P 4K video on VLC and it's really laggy. Thanks anyway. I'm sure your video has helped some people.
I have the same result. I'm tryimg to play 10 bit video, but it's laggy and the objects leaving pixel trails. I've been able to plau 8k videos on my computer but strugglig with 4k 10 bit. I can't find any solution on the internet :[

Лол. Поставить kmplayer будет решением проблемы или gomplayer. Vlc всегда лагал. Особенно если это специфичный формат с видеоригистратора или.... Или 60% форматов видео о которых на линуксе скажем не слышали и они не работают

@@jubaerbd007 If have 2 GB ram then you need to make sure you don't do multi tasking. Also make sure not have many windows opened. Remove all unnecessary unwanted applications. No need to install any ram cleaner because anywhich it will lag more.

Nope, thanks though... I have a fairly strong computer, video card, my OS on an SSD and 32 Gigs of memory. but nothing seems to work. A real shame too because I tried Windows Media Player and it looked HORRIBLE! The colours and picture with VLC looked WAY better! Actually, disabling Hardware Acceleration DID help it to be much smoother than with it on 'Automatic', but all the other settings had no effect or very little effect. My cache was set at 1000, so I set it at 2000. Still not smooth though, I would say maybe 70% better.
