TransPennine Express New Nova Trains

  • TPE have recently introduce three brand new types of train to their network, so I met up with Phil from Modern Railways magazine to see if we could find and ride on all three types in one day, and see what we thought of them ...
The 'Nova 1' are Class 802 Hitachi Trains. 'Nova 2' are the Class 397 CAF Trains, and the Nova 3 are the loco-hauled services.
And one of them we decided looks a bit like Darth Vader!
Official info on the TPE website here: www.tpexpress....
With thanks to TPE for providing us with tickets.

Good to see Phil, after reading the latest issue of MR! Around 7:05, this brilliant idea of being able to change from diesel to electric reminded me of common practice, years ago, at Birmingham New St, where this was the norm - something like a 47 in, and an 86 out at the other end. The layout was optimised for moves like that. Typically no more than 10 minutes, often a bit less.

Top mark for TPE for introducing a exciting fleet of new trains! I like the Nova 3 best as they're loco hauled although I'm a bit disappointed not all the seats line up with the windows. I like the layout of the Nova 2 best as the seats line up with the windows in standard perfectly. I would like to think if required in the future the Nova 3 could be lengthened with orders for more carriages. It will also be interesting to see if they're always hauled by class 68s or in the future an electric loco ends up hauling them.

TPE took there chance and as I'm a look who is at Morpeth a lot I would say it's paid off for them

Peerless architecture, it retained its covered trainshed and two real ale pubs in the station. They now need to put on a direct train to London, electrify the route and re-twin the tracks to Sheffield.
