    As a teenage bedroom DJ in the 1970’s I had a radio shack slide board. In 1979 I got my first club gig at a club on Boston’s north shore. The club had one of those silver face Bozak rotary boards, I really liked it once I became accustomed to it. In 1984 I decided to purchase one for myself, but alas I was too late, Bozak was no more. I decided to get myself a Urei 1620 witch turned out to be the type of mixer I used in nearly every club I worked in for the rest of my long DJ career. The 1620 was absolutely the industry standard back in the day, every major club in Boston and New York had one.
    I still have my 37 year old 1620 and I intend to keep using it till I’m dead. Rotary rocks!

      Nice! I always wanted to try the Urei 1620, but I never had the opportunity. Question: is there any type of degradation that occurs with those? I would be curious to buy one, but I would like to know what to look out for. Thanks in advance for your time.

      @@djcarlitosatl Vintage electronics require some semi-regular maintenance typically, maybe once every few years, occasional repairs and replacements for some small components like capacitors that may be worn out or damaged over time. Depending on how much you are gigging with it and traveling around this could be a more regular thing, but kept in a clean environment, away from smokers, drunks & fog machines, treated with care and it will usually experience significantly less problems and you might get away with maybe a decade before some capacitor or something blows and you need to take it in for repair. A lot of it can depend on how much you are using it too. It's all incredibly variable and there are always exceptions but it's better to be prepared to have to pay for service regularly than assume you'll get away with treating a disco queen, a treasure from a bygone era, so poorly.

    I love Rotary Mixers. I got my first one, a Bozak in 1978. I DJed at Studio 54 in NYC from 1982 to 1985. I used a Urei and a Bozak there. During the 70s & 80s the biggest clubs in NY had Rotary Mixers. After playing at 54, I would never dare use anything but a Rotary. With those select old school club DJs in NY they wouldn’t be caught dead using anything else. Of course the quality and sound of these mixers are exceptional, but with these DJs it’s more loyalty, and memories of the Glory Heydays from Places like Paradise Garage and such.

      @@user-rv8wb1nl1b I mean I think it goes without saying he is talking about playing house. You play house with a rotary, and house-adjacent genres, maybe some techno or breaks, but that is basically it. That is pretty much a given. Also you can get away with mixing hip hop on one tbh depending on how willing you are to let the tracks blend, which can be fine with some hip hop and rather unpleasant with other styles. I will say it just isn't very user-friendly, particularly if someone isn't used to playing on a rotary. But if you are quick on the channel dials, you can manhandle it into mixing in an imitation of a sort of hip-hop style with faster cuts than most people do with a rotary, it's all in the flick of the wrist and the response curve on your respective alps pots. Also you can swap out the channel knobs for something bigger or smaller that helps you spin them faster. I do this sort of mixing sometimes with drum and bass, although I usually just play liquid dnb and mix it more like house & techno, and sometimes with breaks too, although I usually opt to blend them as well, and it sounds fine to me.
      I'm sure I could mix hard dance on mine, breakbeat hardcore, hard house, hard techno, all of that stuff reasonably well too. I just haven't touched my Nukleuz records since before I owned a rotary, and I don't have any good x pills leftover. It is the same as playing on a mixer with the crossfader disabled. Personally, I almost never use the crossfader. I normally have it disabled on every channel, and I find it very irritating when I use gear where it is enabled and not easily disabled. Unless you are scratching, the crossfader just sounds bad if someone is using it, at least to my ears. Channel faders are just better in every way, so its all kinda a non-issue to me. Rotary mixers are not THAT different, it's just that the people who own them, particularly pricey vintage stuff like Urei or Bozak, or new pricey stuff like the Condezza, are typically stuck-up purists who sorta look down on other genres and people who don't play vinyl exclusively.

    • @user-rv8wb1nl1b
      @user-rv8wb1nl1b 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @shelltoe_soul
      @shelltoe_soul 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-rv8wb1nl1b what the fuck does cueing or blending have to do with having a crossfader? Yes, scratching is easier on a mixer with a crossfader, but you can still execute some scratches with a rotary, it just isn't convenient to do so and feels kinda weird. That is it. On a mixer with or without a crossfader, the experience of cueing is going to be exactly the same, and blending is arguably better in every way on a rotary, and most rotary mixers do not have any crossfader. You clearly don't know much at all, your point makes absolutely no sense.

      You are one of the few real pioneer first generation DJs most of the early DJs were like you. They don’t have a big name like David Guetta or Tiesto, but you guys were the first ones who started the whole thing. The true Pioneers! I didn’t start DJing till 1980. My first mixer was cheap Numark. But it was a very popular mixer. A lot of DJs had it. I had Technics SL 220 belt drive turntables. But then I got a Bozak and some Thornes TD 125s. I started on Long Island. I played at Channel 80 and Metro 700. I started at Studio 54 in 1982. The Awesome DJ Leroy Washington brought me in. He was the Resident at 54 at that time. I ended up playing there for quite a while. I also played at Palladium and Area. I also played at a club called Stringfellows in NYC and the one in London in 1985. Also played at Hippidrome. And now sometimes I’m on SiriusXM Studio 54 radio on Robbie Leslie’s show. The early days were the best of times. It will never happen again. It was new and exciting. And in New York we had it all to ourselves. The entire Club sene was invented in NYC. Now it’s all over the world and the New York sene is dead! It’s too expensive to have a club in NYC. and to many politics and red tape. You don’t have clubs like Garage and Starship. Long gone. You have to go to London or Berlin. My best friend Gary Stewart (RIP) did the original system at Ministry of Sound in London. Hey Frank, do you still DJ??? I Larry Levan was a dear friend of mine. I use to hang out with Larry at the Garbage during the daytime when he was just fooling around with the system. And I know Ray Pinky Valasquez for many years, he played at Ipanema.

They did their "SubZero" branded Omnitronic 202 & 402 so Iguess Omnitronic either make them for gear4Music or they are made in a Chinese factory as OEM mixers then branded accordingly. I own an original Bozak CMA 10-2DLC rotary mixer, in addition to a Allen & heath Xone S2 rotary mixer; they both sound great, although the Bozak does an overall smoother blend, the Xone S2 is actually transitions better on those pots and the Xone S2 rotary is a brighter more modern sound. The analog sound of the Bozak never falls behind and just sounds warmer for music when really music, without any digitalization and containing sways in the instruments that although flawed, hardly ever sounds that way. In summary, they both sound good, far better than the Urei 1620 rotary or the Rane MP2016 unit, but of course, having played all of these in a club environment, its just a matter of taste. One final word, the only rotary that beats these two is the Allen & Heath Xone V6 rotary, it leaves all rotary mixers in the dust.

The Model 1 - Slightly underwhelming and has issues with some of the recessed controls scraping on the faceplate, should be priced closer to £1200. And now Mojaxx has reminded me about the doubts here on the Formula Sound FF6.2 (which I have arriving the day after tomorrow) producing a popping sound when some of the channel buttons are pressed. Are we all getting ripped off with over hyped and overpriced equipment? At least in the case of this Omnitronic its only £700, but what a shame about that filter because it sounds lovely! ok this is good it has a cross fader .Im ok with rotary mixers but i lose interest when there is no cross fader.Having one gives you the best of both worlds.I often do long blends and that is good with rotary style mixers but with no cross fader i would have both hands on the knobs which i find un comf but with one hand free for pitch bending and the other for the knobs im happy so this would be ok if i was to find one in a bar or club.

    After watching your video about this mixer, I have something similar that I bought from RadioShack years ago, but the power supply died, and that has to be repaired, what would be nice about these mixers is to have a USB connection to a computer, this can be used as an interface to record on your mixes to laptop or desktop, that is missing, that feature I like. Nowadays, there are mixers that come with USB port, to connect to a computer. It would be a waste of money for me to buy this mixer without that feature. And I really don't care about the filters. I just want to be able to mix from one input to the another, and record it on to my laptop, as well as to stream it on the Internet. Now that would justify the cost.

    • @sgtcreasegrease
      @sgtcreasegrease 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience you get more stability by running your mixer through an audio interface that goes to the computer. It could be something as simple as a focusrite 2i2, just gotta match the gains and use rca to 1/4" plugs, or behringer (as shotty as they can be sometimes) makes these little phono boxes that you can switch to line and connects to your computer via USB. So if you have a mixer already all you need is one of those things and you can stream your mixes.

    Its all analog and get an external power supply built for it,, my guess that would quiet the popping if not mod them with zero switches.
    It Will cost some money but not nearly as buying a 3000 dollars boutique and it has so much it offers.

    Needs individual mono channel meters rather than stereo metering shared by all the cues. Isolators per channel would interest me rather than the master iso. And I don't use crossfaders. Filters for every channels would be nice, high pass and low pass on every channel, with shared resonance knob. I also prefer the Urei and Alpha knobs.

    YMMV - mine has a dead phono channel, likely a dead preamp. The phono preamp isn’t great to begin with, being 40% weaker than the line channel, making it not ideal for phono + cdj mixing. I’s just save a little longer and go for something of higher built reputation.

    I order one of these before your review. Thank you for that! It's a bummer about the FX clicks when engaged. What is your opinion on the Crossfader. Will it last a few years or more? Im no scratch pickle, but I have been "scratching/sampling" sections or phrases in my mixes lately and thats why I wanted the crossfader. My main objective is to get a very clean analog sound for my vinyl records. I can hear all the newer mixers internal digital processing when playing records. I have a really high end system and know who records should sound. I know its weird. but I am a sound engineer and its my job to hear that stuff. thx for your input!

They did their "SubZero" branded Omnitronic 202 & 402 so I guess Omnitronic either make them for gear4Music or they are made in a Chinese factory as OEM mixers then branded accordingly.
