Shijiazhuang is a city in China，last century this city suffered from economic decline. This band is combined with four Shijiazhuang man.So the economic decline influenced their childhood a lot
In this song, the opening part describes a middle age man in Shijiazhuang,tied of living,could not find any passion in daily life.one day he bought a fake gun with fake paper money.
With the explosion of emotion in the middle,this story ends suddenly and the lyrics turn sharply into abstract psychological description:
如此生活三十年，直到大厦崩塌。一万匹脱缰的马，在他脑海里奔腾。
translation：live such a life for thirty years,until the edifice falls down. Millions of runaway horses, galloping inside his mind.
Fans in China tend to think the edifice means his reason crumbled,and then chose to end his life,or anyone others.(or intellect or logic crumbled,I don’t know which means 理智 in English.)

The reason he did all things is the changing of life and job. My parents also suffered that time. Before my born the most important point to choose husband was working in national factory. But thirty years later national factories went bankrupt. So there is no hope for most of workers. "I lived like this for thirty years, but my life was broke because of the crash of society". Sorry for my poor English.
stories behind are the transformation in the 80's in China. From state-owned economy to open market, society changed so quick, values also changed violently. People felt lost and confused, because of corruption and failure of planned-economy, a lot of workers on North China Plain lost their jobs, felt left behind by the changing world.
You know, the best part about this song is actually the lyrics. The fall of an era. The collapse of a generation of Chinese labor class and their life.
China is disconnect to the world.

This album can reflect their progress in this ten years. Even though you may not understand the profound meaning words of these songs, the arrangers are also excellent.
lovely review. This band is one of my favorite. Their lyrics too are very inspiring and deep like the earlier progressive rock songs. For instance this song you just listened to, is about a the crumpling of Chinese old fashioned heavy industries and its effect on normal people like factory workers. They live a mundane life which got harder as the economy switched lanes and they went out of jobs. The reality of life falls upon them like eruptions (where the hard rock music kicks in).

This song’s background is about the era when China’s transitioned from planed economy to market economy. Shijiazhuang had a lot of state owned factories so when the economy reform started, lots of people lost their livelihood.
The lyrics is about a factory worker’s ordinary life was day in and day out first. But all of a sudden everything just collapsed on him. He lost his factory job but also got out of the mundane life (almost suffocating life in my opinion).
The song recorded the era through the lens of a ordinary man’s life without being judgemental or expressed any political preference. I think it reflects more on meaning of life itself than the society.
