"You would make a good Dalek..." is one of the hardest line drops in Dr Who. Eccleston's face sells how crushing it is for the Dr to hear that. His time war PTSD is why I think 9 is the most underrated Dr.
Eccleston and Tennant always sold the time war stuff so well. Eccleston's Doctor was just in so much pain and had so much grief and Tennant's was slowly, slowly getting over it but still seething at times with anger and pain. Their facial expressions and acting are so above what you'd expect from a low budget sci-fi show that's been around since the 60s.
A line that still echoes throughout the entirety of the show. “ I am not a good Dalek, you are a good Dalek. “
"...what the hell are you changing into?" This one too... 😢😢😢
Murray Gold is the music composer and you are going to have years of his fantastic work to enjoy
Sadly. Since he's now outstayed his welcome.
@@JudgeJosephDredd1989 genuinly curious, why do you think that? because personally i really loved some of his work for series 14, especially life of sunday.
@@annahoiIt's just samey samey we've had him for 12 years after Matt Smith I was ready for a new composer I just got bored with his style of music I wanted the style of Peter Howell or Ron Grainer scary horror vibes music just something different and I think Segun Akinola should had stayed.
Eccleston is my favorite Doctor because of his ability to express his grief over his people .. and shift back and forth on a dime. He's amazing as an actor
If you don't love me at my farting aliens, you don't deserve me at my shouty squid dustbin 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 {Please accept this ActualLol Award: 🏆}
A lot of us have probably been excited for this one :’D
You are not wrong
Van Statten isn't the Big Bad Wolf.
Nobody calls him that.
"Bad Wolf" was just code for the plane / helicopter he landed in.
Kinda like Air Force One.
Bit of trivia: regarding the whole “those guns are useless, why do you keep shooting” thing: if you’re familiar with the tvtropes website, there’s a trope which covers that very thing. It’s called “five rounds rapid” which, as it happens, is a quote from…an episode of Classic Who. :)
In the classic era of Doctor Who, it was a common joke that Daleks couldn't go up stairs. I mean - this was in newspapers, cartoons showing the Doctor just needs to go up some stairs to get away from the Daleks cos they roll around but couldn't fly. This was actually finally put to rest in 1988 however when they first had a Dalek go up stairs... however by that point in time only about 4 million Brits were watching Doctor Who, so they clearly decided to make it a big point in this episode that yes - Daleks can elevate...
Nicholas Briggs, the voice of the Dalek doesn't get enough credit for his vocal characterization.
I've seen all of nuwho many times througy, and I've watched probably a dozen reactors watch this specific episode by now, and Briggs' delivery of "I want... freedom" still gets me.
The first of many, *many* emotional sledgehammers that this show will deliver. Bring ya tissues.
This was the first great episode when it returned back in 2005. You have many many more great ones to enjoy throughout your Doctor Who journey.
@@davidhanmer82 This is still one of my top episodes. Definitely my favorite of 9's season.
@@LordVolkovit's a tough call between Dalek and a forthcoming two-parter (hope that's vague enough not to be spoilery) but I think Dalek edges it for me.
I fell in love with him on the second episode... his acting when he first told Rose his people were gone made me a Doctor Who fan.. I'd never really watched it before Eccleston
In the words of Janet: Not a robot.
It is very very hard to communicate how vast the English cultural backdrop to the Daleks means in this episode. Christopher Eccleston even admitted that it was the opening of a Dalek casing that attracted him to the show on odd occasions in his childhood. Despite the limitations of their time they have come to be associated with the fight against wartime fascism in a nation that was basically pulverised by it. And I hope that aspect is never forgotten.
A Dalek death-ray could instantly vaporise its target. But a Dalek is considerably more cruel and full of hate than wanting to cause mere death. The ray's power is dialled back a bit, and scrambles the internal organs causing a more agonising death.
The head at the start was a cyberman.... 2nd only to the daleks in the Dr who monster list.... like the daleks, they featured regularly in classic dr who
Watched this live in 2005. Still by far the best Dalek episode; possibly the best episode ever.
Yeah, the saying is "Two's company, three's a crowd". There was a show that played off it called "Three's Company".
And don't forget the key line, when the Doctor is facing the Dalek for the first time, telling him how the time war ended: "I made it happen"
Every Taylor Swift lyric. All the cat memes. All the porn. How did the Dalek handle it?
All the badshit crazy conspiracy theories.
@@Frahamen cut gags in the script about exactly this!
These are really enjoyable reactions. A couple of new reactors to Doctor Who (you included) have recently given me a new appreciation of the Slitheen episodes. And it's so interesting seeing a newbie encounter a Dalek for the first time. I was watching Doctor Who when the first Dalek appeared on screen, over 60 years ago, and the wonder of the design never fades.
I couldn't work out why you were calling Van Statten 'the wolf guy' and had to go back and watch again from the start. Ah, I understand. Well, let's see.
And three is definitely a crowd. When the third doesn't really fit.
Enjoyable reaction. I started watching this series 50 years ago...
Sympathy for the Dalek, followed by fear of the Dalek, then back to sympathy for the Dalek?
What you stumbled upon is something relatively rare: an great Doctor Who episode. Most are at least good, a few are pretty bad, but in every series there are a few absolutely amazing and this is one of them.
I LOVE there are people who know nothing about Doctor Who.
If I were in the room, I'd be sitting behind the screen going full Just Monika and watching your reaction 100%
I've seen this episode to death and I still love it. So absorbing your facial expression as you witness the best Dalek episode would give me life.
Why is this the best?
Because it shows everything the Dalek is.
What's a Dalek? Answered.
What does it do/want? Answered.
What's the sucker for? Answered.
What's the whisk for? Answered.
What're the balls for? Answered.
All answered with visual context.
I really wish I could experience watching these episodes for the first time again. Unfortunately I can't, I saw them when they aired at the time every week. But I love watching other people watch them for the first time on TH-cam. Especially when it's episodes like this and some of the ones to come, watching the reactions people have really takes me back to the emotions I felt seeing these stories for the first time. Massive love to Darcie and everyone who witnesses this for the first time with her.
Christopher Facial expressions, wow , & great music made this outstanding episode. I love seeing reactions, too, this episode
The metal head in the case at the beginning of the episode was an easter egg for classic Who fans, it's an enemy the Doctor went against in the earlier runs of the show. (trying to give context without spoilers is difficult)
Calling it Robot is so adorable I'm not even going to bother correcting you.
Happy your watching doctor who!! One of my favourite Sci-fi shows ever! You should also try the Spin-offs too!
The Daleks are THE great villain from Doctor Who. By the end of the 1980s though, their status had slipped a bit and people tended to think they were a bit silly... then THIS episode comes along and re-established them as being genuine threats. The writing here is amazing, and Eccleston really rises to it - he's brilliant here.
(Fun fact: writer Robert Shearman genuinely asked his girlfriend to give him reasons why the Daleks were rubbish, and then proceeded to counter-act every single one in this episode)
Also, the creature seen in the case at the beginning of the episode is called a Cyberman. Might want to remember that name...
Was one of the reasons because they couldn't go up stairs?
It was more about how easy they were to beat, how the stories with them weren't always great... that sort of thing.
(Although yes, "they can't get up stairs!" was a not-uncommon joke before this episode)
@@csmadisun Hence the joke emerged "Daleks don't climb the stairs, they level the building"
...it's a good joke, to be fair.
That had really never happened. The last three Dalek stories in Classic Who, Remembrance, Revelation and Resurrection (from 1984-88), were all stone cold classics that enhanced their legend no end. Prior to that were Destiny (1979) and Genesis (1975). Destiny was no Genesis, but it wasn't bad at all. And honestly, after that classic the Daleks could have withstood the ultimate turkey anyway. The stakes are always raised when the Daleks are on screen
"You're about as far from the stars as you can get." He spittin facts! Absolutely love the sound track for Doctor Who! I also absolutely love Rose's character and her empathy for others. I love how you are picking up on background potential stuff for characters motives and interdynamics. When you're further along in the series, I would suggest checking out That'sNotActing and his take on this series - he's got a really amazing ideas about character personalities and body language from like...a theatrical background vision it is really fascinating and I think you would enjoy his take.
I read an article recently talking about the Doctor and I want to share with you an excerpt from it that is so profound, I think.
" 'When they made this particular hero, they didn't give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver to fix things. They didn't give him a tank or a warship or an x-wing fighter, they gave him a call box from which you can call for help. And the didn't give him a superpower or pointy ears or a heat ray, they gave him an extra heart. They gave him two hearts. And that's an extraordinary thing; there will never come a time when we don't need a hero like the Doctor.'
That's a quote from Steven Moffat, talking about why Doctor Who is so important. Whilst there are fans across the world who wax lyrical about the beauty of Doctor Who, you might not expect to see any kind of deep dialogue actually in a science-fiction show. But that's precisely what makes the genre so special; by relocating to faraway lands that we can only dream of, taking a story to extremes, both in the past and the future, writers can coax the most fascinating emotions from their audience; it's no surprise that sometimes, every once in a while, someone says something profound or beautiful. And Doctor Who is no different. Yeah, it's chock-full of Daleks and Cybermen and Weeping Angels, but at its heart, it's a show about what it means to be human" - Mark White 2/21/14
The Doctor has PTSD from the Time War. He is not acting because of reason, but from his horrific trauma. The Time War lasted for thousands of years, countless planets and peoples were extinguished, erased from existence. The Doctor saw it all. And then The Doctor started fighting. Take a moment and imagine The Doctor as a bloodthirsty warrior. Shivers.
The tonal whiplash of going from the sliveen passing gas for 2 episodes to the dalkes is so funny to me
Oh here we go. The shows first truly Great episode in my opinion.
Yes, but of the revival (NuWho)
@@not-that-Chrisyeah that’s what I mean
The mechanical head in the museum is that or a Cyberman, another classic villain race
Keep em coming, so well edited, easy to follow, so much fun to come . 😁
Haha the phrase actually is "two's company, three's a crowd", so you had it right without knowing!
The Daleks are the original Doctor Who monster from the second story of the show ever all the way back in the original Season 1. The are the Doctor's biggest and most hated enemy and they are an integral part of the how's history with it's success really kicking off with "Dalekmania" as they became hugely successful in the 60s. Being the enemy of the Daleks actually really defined the Doctor and made him a hero and not just a grumpy old time traveler.
In reference to other classic monsters the head at the begging was of a Cybermen another of the Doctor's biggest foes inspired by the success of the Daleks whilst being distinct.
Over the years of the classic version of the show that was finally cancelled in 1989, some of the Doctor's companions died. Not many, but some. And all died mid-season. 😎
That's true. I don't think a single of the old companion deaths was end of season.
Even departures weren't always end of season. Companions would come and go at odd times.
They might have a plunger for a hand, but when done properly Daleks are one of the scariest villains.
*"Pragmatic" might be word you're looking for.
**It's actually, "Two's company, three's a crowd." This was why the title for the sitcom, "Three's Company," was part of the joke.
The music in this show only gets better and better and better 😆
I had forgotten what a ditzy blond rose was in these early episodes
Daleks were one of the first enemies the Doctor faced when the first series aired in the 60s, that close after the second world war it's not hard to guess who they were supposed to represent.
The robot head in the case was another enemy from classic series, some real body horror behind them.
The episode was a good introduction for new fans to this classic Who enemy and attempted to illicit sympathy for the devil in fans of classic Who.
Did Dr Who predict Elon Musk? And I'm not talking about the Dalek, though after his little wave last night it might be hard to tell the difference.
You was doing fine until you brought up Elon Musk
Daleks are Nightmares in Doctor Who
The first five episodes of the revival are fine (apart from the farting aliens), but after that it really goes up a level and keeps going with very few stumbles.
The Doctors (and companions less so) costumes are relatively static though out their run for real world financial reasons. They saved money by giving the Doctors' actor/body double/stuntmen the same costume for as many episodes as possible.
As someone who had enjoyed later original Doctor Who, I remained unconvinced by the early episodes of nu-Who, feeling them to be rather rushed (Rose, The End of the World) or overly silly (the two-parter with the Slitheen). Dalek is the episode that won me over. Pacing just about perfect and some heartwrenching tugs on the emotions. How could they make me feel sympathy for a Dalek? There may be some dodgy episodes of Doctor Who but as long as they keep bringing out clever episodes like this to make us challenge our assumptions, then long may Who continue
**Potential Mild Spoiler** As a fellow fan of classic Who, I think season/series 1 in general is a bit shaky. I think they were still figuring things out. "Dalek" may be my favorite episode of the season, when taken in a vacuum, but they made the Dalek way too powerful, which I think messes with the continuity.
Looking forward to the rest of the season intensely!!
Enjoying your reactions, and love how you’re invested…No spoilers, but if you’re already invested now, be warned, Dr Who has plenty of feels moments ahead…. Seasons 3-7 are probably the best in its run , although there are excellent episodes in most seasons, and many more characters to fall in love with (but that would be, ahem, “spoilers”…which is an in joke you’ll eventually understand) ❤
Great reaction to this intense episode!
FANTABULOUS
The head in the case is a cyberman, they're old enemies from classic who, if the daleks are the doctor's greatest foe then the cybermen are number 2
Hearing you refer to sliding under a door as 'maze runner' instead of 'Indiana Jones' hurts my soul. They stole that move from him
Even then, didn't this episode come before it?
@@thepandorica1660 Indiana Jones was released 20 years before that. Early 1980's
@@ericsanford536what made you think I was referring to that movie?
@@ericsanford536you didn't need to tell me that, but I already knew it came out in the 80s. Hence why I wasn't talking about it
A Dalek biography to help you understand this episode better;
The Daleks came from a war ravaged world Skaro. The two indigenous species there fought a genocidal war the Keled race won the war, but there was at a terrible cost to winning and that was mutations. Their chief scientist Davros decided to experiment genetically manipulating the genome of the race with the aim to save it from extinction. At the same instance all emotions were removed leaving only hatred for all other life forms not Dalek. He also designed the Daleks travel machine MK1.
Thousands of years later there was a great time war between the Time Lords and the Daleks.
To end the war..
The Doctor destroyed his own race as well as the Daleks to save the Universe.
How this enemy came to be imagined in Doctor Who was because of the Nazi's, the master race and their war crimes in WW2 exterminating what they described as subhumans in the name of racial purity.
I hope this is helpful..
For a sick lady, you look fantastic. This episode really gears the series up. Tou're in for a time.
After the next mediocre episode, the rest of the series is just brilliant the whole way! Cant wait to see your reactions❤
Might not be the best, but it *is* kind of necessary for later episodes.
@plothole181 yep. Not the best but needs watching
I honestly don't wholeheartedly love any of the episodes in season 1. There are plenty of good things to be found, but the show is still finding its feet, and I don't think any of the episodes come together perfectly.
@stuffyouotterlistento1461 nice to hear your opinion! 😊 in my opinion the finale is probably my favourite of New Who and the latter half of series 1 is up there as some of the best!
@KatieRuby I feel bad, because I like Eccleston and give him a lot of credit for putting the show on solid footing, but I'm not blown away by even the fan favorite episodes of season 1 (though I liked the show enough to keep watching it without hesitation). As for the finale, there are a few issues I have with it, but I can't really go into them without spoilers. But like I said about season 1 in general, there are good things to be found as well.
Saying nothing but wow! Now you're getting it.
Have tissues ready for the episode After this one. Father's Day.
I truly hope you decide to dip into the classic Who library. 695 episodes (unfortunately about 90 are missing but they're beginning to replace them with animated versions). 25 minute episodes, multi-part stories. The Daleks first appeared in the second ever Doctor Who story.
You use the terms differently. When you talk about "episodes", I say "stories". I call the parts of a story an "episode"... until the modern era where when there is a multi-part story, I just use "Part 1). Anyhow, that is beside the point that we seem to love the Classical Doctor Who.
There are 157 Classic Who "stories" consisting of 695 25-minute episodes, of which approximate 90 are missing.
Stewart's wording did not require correction.
This was the episode when I started to feel really good about the return of the series - some real stakes, drama and impact (and fewer fat farting aliens)
If you want more doctor who? Maybe DW confidential is for you. Behind the scenes materials. I think it's make you love doctor who even more. Welcome to this fantastic rollercoaster.
It's Dar-lek not daylek.
The Daleks are the Doctor's oldest and most deadliest enemies and have first appeared on-screens in 1963 they are based on nazi germany they are space racists they are also one iconic villains of science fiction.
There's no R in Dalek. It's what's called an intrusive R, something that Brits often slip into words. But just because they say "withdrawral" or "supernovar" doesn't mean you should, unless that sort of thing comes naturally to you. Like, if you're an American and you call a bottle of water a ba-uh wa-uh, you're just gonna sound ridiculous, because it doesn't fit with your speech patterns. So: DAH-leck is much more appropriate.
The "ah" in "Dalek" is pronounced like the "a" in "ball." Think "baller," but starting with a 'd' and ending with a 'k.'
You've never heard of the Daleks? Since Story 2 of the classical period, they have been on at least 1 time every season. Well, not sure about the more resent seasons because I have not watched them.
There was a five year absence of Dalek stories between 1967 and 1972.
There was four year gap in Dalek stories between 1975 and 1979.
And there was another five year gap between 1979 and 1984.
Dalek/ Daylek. You're much further with 'robot'.
You're not alone Darcie, the Slitheen previous two-parter are not exactly fan-favourites. Personally, I think they're weakest in the season.
pronounced DAH-lick
Only by Dr Emmett Brown.
the last 2 you watched were on the top 5 list of the worst of nuWho.
Spelled Dalek, but to say it you kinda gotta input an R so it sounds like its Darlek
ah the intrusive R,
I just came here to mention the intrusive R. Basically, a lot of Brits tend to slip a bit of an R-sound into things that don't have an R. One example I've seen used more than once is "lawr and order" for "law and order". But if you don't have a British accent (or some other accent with an intrusive R, which most American accents don't have), pronouncing Dalek "Darlek" is just weird. It'd be like saying "I don't know what the governor will do." with an American accent, but pronouncing "governor" "guv-nah" for no reason.
So yeah, I'd say that the proper American pronunciation is DAH-leck, rhyming with colic and (Jackson) Pollock.* It might ruffle some feathers, but I personally think that even DAL-ick, rhyming with phallic and (Gurney) Halleck, is an acceptable Americanization of the word as well.
*We can quibble over -eck vs. -ick, but one really slurs into the other, so either way, I think you're good.
Did I tell you every season has at least 1 great episode, even some of the early bad seasons. Yes, they got bad before they got ridiculously woke, but that is a long way off. Oh this is Eccleston's master piece.
Mate, the show has always been 'woke'. In fact, the previous story was basically commentary on the royal family and how they're talking out of their arses...
Let me guess, you think it's 'woke' because the Dr regenerates into a woman?
@thepandorica1660 Well, it was more of an extended Iraq allegory. Politicians talking out of their arses; "weapons of mass destruction - capable of being deployed within 45 seconds," (except for 'seconds' rather than 'minutes' - a direct quote about Hussein and Iraq's non-existent nuclear arsenal) according to the slitheen; "do you think they'll believe him?" "Well, they did last time"; destruction for the sake of cheap fuel; etc. Possibly the least subtle political commentary in the history of the show. Underrated, except for the bloody fart jokes.
@@somerandomguy2073hate the farting all you want, but without them I'm not sure if the episode would've made it pass the radar. Like, outside of it...the Slitheen are just straight up horrific
Imagine using woke as an insult unironically. Cringe.
