I really wish I could experience watching these episodes for the first time again. Unfortunately I can't, I saw them when they aired at the time every week. But I love watching other people watch them for the first time on TH-cam. Especially when it's episodes like this and some of the ones to come, watching the reactions people have really takes me back to the emotions I felt seeing these stories for the first time. Massive love to Darcie and everyone who witnesses this for the first time with her.

A Dalek biography to help you understand this episode better; The Daleks came from a war ravaged world Skaro. The two indigenous species there fought a genocidal war the Keled race won the war, but there was at a terrible cost to winning and that was mutations. Their chief scientist Davros decided to experiment genetically manipulating the genome of the race with the aim to save it from extinction. At the same instance all emotions were removed leaving only hatred for all other life forms not Dalek. He also designed the Daleks travel machine MK1. Thousands of years later there was a great time war between the Time Lords and the Daleks. To end the war.. The Doctor destroyed his own race as well as the Daleks to save the Universe. How this enemy came to be imagined in Doctor Who was because of the Nazi's, the master race and their war crimes in WW2 exterminating what they described as subhumans in the name of racial purity. I hope this is helpful..

I know I am late to the party, but they actually at first wanted The Anointed One to have a bigger role, but then they realized.. children grow up much faster than adults. You can have a 20-something actor play an immortal vampire well into their 40's especially with the right make up... but you just can't do that with a kid. So they had no choice but to kill him off. EDIT: Ah I see someone else did mention this.

Watched this live in 2005. Still by far the best Dalek episode; possibly the best episode ever.

The metal head in the case at the beginning of the episode was an easter egg for classic Who fans, it's an enemy the Doctor went against in the earlier runs of the show. (trying to give context without spoilers is difficult)

The only time I don't agree with Mal is when he says that he (Mal) didn't respect her job, while Atherton didn't respect Inara. To me, it's still the same. He disrespects Inara by insulting her job and repeatedly calling her a whore. It's insulting. So I don't think he's right to say that to her. But... Atherton's still the worse man, by far. Slimeball.

I love Kaylee charming all the men at the party with her engine talk. She deserves to be fawned over, she's so sweet. 😄

It is very very hard to communicate how vast the English cultural backdrop to the Daleks means in this episode. Christopher Eccleston even admitted that it was the opening of a Dalek casing that attracted him to the show on odd occasions in his childhood. Despite the limitations of their time they have come to be associated with the fight against wartime fascism in a nation that was basically pulverised by it. And I hope that aspect is never forgotten.

What you stumbled upon is something relatively rare: an great Doctor Who episode. Most are at least good, a few are pretty bad, but in every series there are a few absolutely amazing and this is one of them.

They might have a plunger for a hand, but when done properly Daleks are one of the scariest villains. *"Pragmatic" might be word you're looking for. **It's actually, "Two's company, three's a crowd." This was why the title for the sitcom, "Three's Company," was part of the joke.

In the classic era of Doctor Who, it was a common joke that Daleks couldn't go up stairs. I mean - this was in newspapers, cartoons showing the Doctor just needs to go up some stairs to get away from the Daleks cos they roll around but couldn't fly. This was actually finally put to rest in 1988 however when they first had a Dalek go up stairs... however by that point in time only about 4 million Brits were watching Doctor Who, so they clearly decided to make it a big point in this episode that yes - Daleks can elevate...

That Daleks are basically super Nazis hate everything that isn’t what they are always be afraid of them

The Doctor has PTSD from the Time War. He is not acting because of reason, but from his horrific trauma. The Time War lasted for thousands of years, countless planets and peoples were extinguished, erased from existence. The Doctor saw it all. And then The Doctor started fighting. Take a moment and imagine The Doctor as a bloodthirsty warrior. Shivers.

Sympathy for the Dalek, followed by fear of the Dalek, then back to sympathy for the Dalek?

You're not alone Darcie, the Slitheen previous two-parter are not exactly fan-favourites. Personally, I think they're weakest in the season.

Oh I am absolutely excited to see your reactions going forward! This episode is not a favorite of mine, mostly as a result of farting aliens, but there really is some very interesting stuff in this two parter. Especially seeing Jackie, Rose, and the Doctor's emotions in this story.

I LOVE there are people who know nothing about Doctor Who. If I were in the room, I'd be sitting behind the screen going full Just Monika and watching your reaction 100% I've seen this episode to death and I still love it. So absorbing your facial expression as you witness the best Dalek episode would give me life. Why is this the best? Because it shows everything the Dalek is. What's a Dalek? Answered. What does it do/want? Answered. What's the sucker for? Answered. What's the whisk for? Answered. What're the balls for? Answered. All answered with visual context.

Bit of trivia: regarding the whole “those guns are useless, why do you keep shooting” thing: if you’re familiar with the tvtropes website, there’s a trope which covers that very thing. It’s called “five rounds rapid” which, as it happens, is a quote from…an episode of Classic Who. :)

Eccleston is my favorite Doctor because of his ability to express his grief over his people .. and shift back and forth on a dime. He's amazing as an actor

The "ah" in "Dalek" is pronounced like the "a" in "ball." Think "baller," but starting with a 'd' and ending with a 'k.'

The Daleks are the original Doctor Who monster from the second story of the show ever all the way back in the original Season 1. The are the Doctor's biggest and most hated enemy and they are an integral part of the how's history with it's success really kicking off with "Dalekmania" as they became hugely successful in the 60s. Being the enemy of the Daleks actually really defined the Doctor and made him a hero and not just a grumpy old time traveler. In reference to other classic monsters the head at the begging was of a Cybermen another of the Doctor's biggest foes inspired by the success of the Daleks whilst being distinct.

The mannequins are placed like that because this is a nuclear bomb test facility so they are staged in ordinary everyday situations.

These are really enjoyable reactions. A couple of new reactors to Doctor Who (you included) have recently given me a new appreciation of the Slitheen episodes. And it's so interesting seeing a newbie encounter a Dalek for the first time. I was watching Doctor Who when the first Dalek appeared on screen, over 60 years ago, and the wonder of the design never fades. I couldn't work out why you were calling Van Statten 'the wolf guy' and had to go back and watch again from the start. Ah, I understand. Well, let's see. And three is definitely a crowd. When the third doesn't really fit.
