  • People take their driver's door for granted...until it gets stuck shut! This 2004 Toyota Tacoma is suffering from the stuck-shut door problem.
Let's see if we can get the door open and fix the problem without too much blood sweat or tears, and get this sweet truck back on the road!
    Enjoy!

Nice work! You sound more qualified to work on your truck than half the so called "mechanics" out there...no joke! Most people can't even change a tire or a light bulb these days!! :)

I cannot tell you how valuable this video was to me, just now. It's 111* here in Arizona and the thought of just going in blind was less than exciting for me. This video tells me exactly what I am getting myself into and 1992fordbronco just told me where to get that spring.

Thank you Pine Hollow! The spring in my door was fine but winter brings out any possible problems, the linkage just needed some oiling. I'm grateful to have come across this video. My door suddenly wouldn't open in a store parking lot, climbing over the center counsel made me miss the old style bench seats, I found this video on my phone while sitting yet in the parking lot and just knowing I could do this myself made me feel better. The most time consuming part for me was loosening the two back bolts for the drivers seat, they were rusty and tight. I don't have a garage so doing it outside on a 12 degree F day this January made my patience short, low patience and cold plastic while scrunched up in the back seat area also attributed to breaking the main control for windows and locks while loosening the door panel. I did find a new one on ebay for $22 and its coming in a few days. And, Thank you to youtube for helping spread good information like this.

Just oiling did the job for you??

There's an easier way! This video helped a ton, but don't bother trying to "unlock" or get that mechanism to move or springs or anything while the door is still locked closed. Just push down with your finger on the little tab you can see him pushing down at 9:25. Notice 9:18 and 9:32 it doesn't push down because the door's locked, 9:25 it does go down. Little tab. You can't see it with the door locked closed and that window guide in the way, but you can feel it. Reach behind the shield and just push that tab with your finger and the door will open. Now fix it with the door open!!

Thank you for the how-to video!!! Without coming across this video, it would have taken me many hours of frustrating labor extended to multiple days! I can imagine the difficulties you went through to capture the details in your video but every bit of it worth it.
And thanks to the comments about where to find the replacement spring by your viewers! I finally found a replacement at Ace hardware - a 20 minute drive to a neighboring town.

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!! With your help I was able to fix this problem, but it was tricky! In addition to the spring being broken, the plastic bushing on the latch rod had come undone so it was extra finicky to get the door open. Thanks to you I wasn't going into the process blind!
Something really helpful I discovered: if you roll the window down after partially detaching the door panel, you can look down the window slot with a flashlight and see a fair amount of the latch mechanism, the spring attachments, etc. Really helped me grasp the layout better.

Thanks for this - until I saw you remove the window guide, I seriously thought the metal shield covering the lock was somehow welded to the metal door panel - in which case I was screwed! This shed a big ol spotlight on the situation, making it do-able - Thanks again!

Thanks so much for this! My spring was fine (didn't know till I got in there) but the handle mechanism itself busted with the door shut. Using your video, I was able to remove the driver seat and the entire inner panel, open the door, and replace the outer handle. I DEFINITELY wouldn't label myself as "mechanically inclined" and the entire process only took a little over an hour and $15. THANK YOU!

Thanks, more than great help. I ended up taking the plastic valance under the steering wheel off (4 bolts), that gave just enough space where the door panel was pinched (by the hinge area) to pop the fasteners off in that spot, so I got the door panel completely off. It still was a pain, but much easier than trying to work with the door panel in the way.
    Thanks again.

Thanks for posting this video. My lock stuck yesterday, so I searched and found this. It took me several hours, but after marking a tool to pull the door panel and find all of my tools to complete the job I got it done. I used the old spring and bent a new end on it. Hempstats worked perfectly to slide in that tight space and stretch the spring. Done deal. I subscribed.

So good to see what's going on in there. I replaced a door handle on my 99 Tacoma today, and it crossed my mind that I wouldn't know what to do when this happens on my truck, with 256K miles presently. Re exterior door handles, I had to add a modification to the new aftermarket one I got off Ebay for 8 bucks. Some of them are such a stupid design, that the part that pushes down on the metal arm on back that connects to the unlatch rod, simply slips in front of that arm because it should have been about a quarter inch (or more) longer. The unlatch rod tends to pull that arm away (slightly) from the back of the handle, and then the part that's supposed to push down on the arm no longer makes sufficient contact with the arm, and thus slips in front of it. Some are designed better than others. Subscribed.

Great video! Wish you used a better spring, but helped on my 2000 Tacoma. By far the most frustrating thing I've fixed so far - and I've done just about everything. My spring wasn't broke. My lock linkage bound up when the handle snapped off. For anyone taking on this project, make sure to watch video to end and see the movement of the latch. With the window support in the way about all you can do is use your fingers to feel and move things around. A 2 hour project on my end.

Hey. Just wanna say thanks for the video. Instead if ripping the door guard off, I found a better way to remove the actuator in 5 steps: 1 - Remove door panel 2 - Remove door handle from the inside. 3 - Walk to door outside remove handle, using a flathead screw driver press down the top of the door clamp, then door will pop out. 4 Unscrew all screws around door actuator. 5. Grab a hold of the actuator from the inside, then pull jiggle out to an open space. Your video was very informative and has assisted me. Thanks.

This video saved my ass when my 2001 Tundra driver's side locked me out. Took out the bench seat as recommended, bent the side panel enough to clear the carpet then lifted it enough off the window-door edge to gain access. Finally located the reach around area to hold down and moved the lever with the other hand for release. Had more problems releasing the plastic retainers on (2) rods to remove the entire assembly.

Can someone please tell me what size the spring is that I need. I have 2003 Toyota Tacoma and the passenger door lock is stuck. I'm assuming that this is the problem. A couple of years ago I had to replace both door handles. Sure wish I had known about this darn little spring then. But the parts stores say they can't get it. I don't want to take the thing apart and then not be able to drive because I don't have anyone to help me. Don't know if I will be able to close the door once it's all apart Went to harbor freight here as someone in the comments stated they got assorted pack of springs but ours didn't have any. But I'm thinking there's another store here kinda like farm supply that I bought a spring with to fix my recliner. Maybe they'll have the size I need. Thanks

I wish there were mechanics like this man close to me. I'd pay up for a mechanic that's willing to do this kind of stuff. I had the same problem and basically carefully removed the door handle by drilling a ton of holes in it and prying it out, then accessing the locking mechanism through the door handle hole. I'll be replacing all of the guts of my door with a new mechanism and all of the rods. Pain in the a**!

Great video. I got the panel off and the spring is in working order but the door still won't open..? Any suggestions? It's 97F and I'm getting cranky lol. Thanks!

Ok, if you’re looking in the comments cause you’re stuck on something then maybe this will help. The piece you’re looking for is in the inside of the door between the outer door handle and the metal guard. If you use the outside handle you’ll see a oval shaped rod move. The piece you need is right next to and slightly behind that oval rod. I learned this the hard way because my spring came completely off. Hope this will help someone lol btw thanks for the video my guy you helped me in a pinch

I have a 1999 Tacoma PreRunner, same problem with my passenger door, where the fnck do you put the passenger seat/get it out? Seems like I'd also need to remove the drivers seat and the center console. I think my problem was caused by a impatient friend repeatedly trying to lift the outside door handle before the door was unlocked or while I was in the process of trying to unlock it yanking up on the handle. Thanks for the video, at least I know where to begin now!
