In Wales the night of Halloween is known as Noson Calan Gaef (the night before the first day of winter) and has many of the Celtic rituals tied to it such as the names on the stones around the fire! This time of the year was also when the community would start to think about which animals to slaughter to prepare for the following months (the ones that wouldn't survive the winter usually) and the month November in Welsh is called Tachwedd meaning Slaughter. There's also many old Welsh folklore tales around the time of the year which include a black horse, and also where the community would give eachother baked goods known as 'soul cakes' where the receiver of the cake would think of the deceased.
@@r.e.4640 you call yourself 'RE which means religious education. How can can you call yourself that when you don't even know the definition of religion?

As My daughters were growing up I wanted to teach them about different cultures and religions. We are catholic but I believe everyone is right and all worship is the same. I always made a point of letting them know that the more we understand about the religion and culture of others the richer our worship would be with others. As they were growing up we celebrated holidays with friends of different cultures and religions which was easy to do in NYC. Now as adults they understand and also celebrate with others and are often invited to worship and celebrate with friends.
This is what I want to do with my kids someday. I am fascinated and love to learn about cultures, beliefs, etc. And now that I’m studying witchcraft I love learning about these holidays
I tought those celebrations were supposed to fit with the right seasons in the lunar calendar. So below the Ecuatorian line Samhain should be celebrated around the end of April or the beginning of May.
Merry Samhain - I've been returning to my ancestral faiths for over 50 years now. I like to go somewhere alone if I can't be with my spiritual brethren. I leave food with a tea light for my Si' friends in the hedgerows for them to consume. In the vale of Pendle there are a few who do this, I've not met them but I've seen the offerings. I also begun in the Gardnerian path as a youth and young man but moved on. What a bright and refreshing person you are young lady. Blessed Be.
That was really enjoyable and informative..I'm one who prefers the older traditions but I have been guilty of combining things here and there..Blessings to you 🌾🍁
Years ago, I was in a coven that celebrated Samhain on the second full moon after Mabon. In fact, they did that with all of the Cross-Quarter holidays. The full moon would provide additional light for the celebrations and thought to be as it would have been celebrated in pre-Christian Celtic lands.
This was interesting to know. I found some rituals have similarities with Hinduism. During Pitru Paksha (a day to pay homage to ancestors) we also place photos of ancestors and prepare a feast.
That's interesting! I think both Hinduism and European Paganism derive from the same ancient indo-european people so it definitely makes since that there would be some similarities among the holidays :)
In Poland they visit their ancestors graves, have feasts for/with them, etc. Then there’s Dia de los muertos in Mexico. It makes sense for each culture to honour the dead
My family always has a big Samhain dinner! It always includes a vegetarian roast, colcannon and late Fall vegetables, apple or pumpkin pie, among other things.
This was my favorite video of yours so far! 🎃 I was born on a Full Moon Eclipse two days before Halloween. My Welsh mother insisted I was a Changeling! 😊
Writing letters are a great idea. It's so much more personal, and has WAY more meaning in it then text or Email. In general I would prefer hand written letters; which is why I got stuff for lettering, and I am going to learn Calligraphy/lettering. So that I can write nice letters to my friends and family, as well as any of my recurring clients.
Love the Celtic folklore ❤️ I’m looking very forward to more historical tradition videos as well. Also think the pen pal idea is great and not weird at all! I tried convincing friends of mine to do this a couple years back. Can’t wait for Samhain this year with a full blue moon 🌚
I also have been very curious to know if you listen to Wardruna? If not, you’re really in for a treat! They’re first 3 albums were dedicated to the elder Futhark. They made songs out of all the runes and they use historic ancient instruments to make it authentic as possible. I highly recommend Raido and Helvegen if you haven’t already heard of them ❤️
I remember my mother put on a large Samhain feast as part of our SCA re-enactments. We rented one of the halls from the local National Guard armories, and had a great time. As an atheist who still celebrates the major holidays and will occasionally attend church to be part of the local community, it’s nice to see educational videos like this on the pagan origins of Western holidays, and how to celebrate without one specific faith.
I so appreciate your historic geared content!! You’re right about it being much harder to find. I’d love more traditional pagan information on your channel, it’s especially exciting when you share your sources with us🥰
Hi scarlet your channel is beautiful .. So excited to find you! It is very difficult to find fellow pagans and wiccans. I always get so excited when I find more! Samhain is one of my favorite holidays. Growing up as a pagan this holiday meant so much to me! Blessed be every one
Definitely having bonfire seen as there's loads of branches cut down in the garden. Especially since I've been leaning a lot towards Celtic paganism while I'm figuring out my path with growing up in northern England (and loving visiting Scotland)
I'm going through a similar transition myself! I was raised Christian, as I think most Americans are, and I'm now in an in-between stage where I'm not completely away from my basic Christian beliefs, but I also am now more 80% pagan leaning. Starting to wonder about magic so on and so forth. I don't like being told what to believe and never have, even as a kid I got in trouble for not really listening in church, so it's no surprise I'm also forging my own spiritual path. I'm even using witch craft as a form of self exploration. I'm also a witch now, so I guess I was always supposed to be my family outlier. XD I think foresight has always existed in our family, but we have no verbal recollections of family witches. Thank you so much for a wonderful video on my favorite time of year!
I'm mostly a solitary practitioner of Wicca. If I don't have additional plans for a sabbat, the most I'll do is a seasonal meal (kitchen witchery is a big part of my practice) and an improvised ritual at my altar. For Samhain specifically, I always leave out a plate of food, whatever I made for dinner, overnight for my ancestors. This year, given the circumstances of the pandemic, I'm planning on basing my ritual around asking for healing and hoping that all who have died from COVID, many before their time, will find peace. I hope you all have a wonderful Samhain, however you celebrate. Blessed be.
I combine both wiccan and celtic traditions. Offerings of an apple by a tree for the fairy folk, I light candles to remember those who have passed( bonfires are not practical where I live) and a ritual cleansing of the home sweeping away the negativity out of the home. Cakes and red grape juice(some use red wine but I don't drink and the grape juice is a good non alcoholic alternative for children) to toast and remember those who have passed.
Hi Scarlet, I'm new to your channel and am finding it most informative and interesting! My ancestors are from Ireland and most likely celebrated Samhain before becoming Christianized. I am getting back to my pagan roots and you are helping me learn how, thanks :)
@Savannah Loughlin Wow! thank you so much for such an informative and insightful answer! I appreciate you! Btw, do you know of any online Samhain celebrations I can attend, they seem to be sparse, at least that is what I am finding.
Very happy to see you cover Samhain, I share pagan/wicca with Norse paganism and combining the two is always of interest to me, I also want to branch this out a bit to include more traditions. Great videos, I just found and subscribed to your channel, thank you!
I love how educational your video is!! 💕 I've always wanted to learn more about the various origins and celebrations of Samhain, and i loved your video so much i instantly followed. Thanks so much for this video!! ❤
this is my very first sabbat that i get to celebrate! I’m so excited and i already know how i’m going to celebrate. Unfortunately my family is highly against my beliefs, but i still have a samhain altar in my room and i’m very very proud of how put together it is. I’m SO excited :))
I enjoy your calm and informative videos. You seem level headed, which is hard to find in the pagan community (at least in my experience). Thank you for the education!
It has always been a big family event, yes foods cider and fire...we also make sure this day is carried on and that our future generations experience its joy.
for me it's secular and magical.I have the advantage of living in the North East and for many years lived in New york maybe 20 miles from sleepy hollow-yeah that sleepy hollow, so there's a good appreciation for the time of year. I love answering the door for the kids, aware of when I was small I'd go to doors and now I'm answering the door, continuing the tradition-cue Elton John- and a meal of my favorite food-spare ribs as pork slaughtering for feasts was traditional. I'm worried on kids missing out so i intend to leave out and if need be refill a bowl by the door for them, much like leaving out offerings for fey you wouldn't let in. I think more people should plan this so kids won't lose out too much this year. Around midnight I do my wiccan ritual and afterward go out into the night with a sack of apples-I take on out of the bag for each friend or relative who's passed on , to remember them in the old style of leaving out offerings with an extra one for those shades who's family have not thought on them for a while. I then go for a walk in the night, only a couple of miles and just drink in the night. I keep a candle burning in the jack-o-lantern before the house all night long in it's traditional roll of a marker and beacon for the spirits.
Just found your channel and can't wait to scroll through your videos. I'm a Wiccan but like you am becoming more interested in the Celtic Pagan rituals. Great video 💚
Hi as my ancestry is Cornish/Welsh Celt and I follow a Druidry path, cattle was not cleansed through fire during this time, yes sacrificed and cleansing was washed down and scrubbed before hand. Cleansing with bonfires was left till Beltane when cattle was run through to cleanse and to make them fertile to produce more cattle. This was a nice video for those getting into Wiccan or Paganism, still lots to learn.
This was really freaking cool to listen to! Every year (except this year for obvious reasons) my local church hosts a Festival of Souls at one of the nearby camping sites. It's usually 3-4 days, cabin/tent camping, multiple rituals in group and private settings, workshops, concerts, pagan vendors, and a candlelight labyrinth. I've gone almost every year since I was 15 and it's an amazing experience, the community has grown to be my family (I call many of the women there "mom" lol) and I look forward to it so much. It doesn't normally land on the 31st but I still always see it as a huge part of my Samhain celebration.
📝 I love the hand written letter, Iv been watching SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED on tv 📺 hallmark and it really shared history ans how wonderful handwriting and letters are to do
I am Irish and in Ireland we always have bonfires and we make a cake called barn brac (with charms inside) play games like snap apple, taking money out of water with your teeth and we ate col cannon, a potato and curley kale dish only made for oiche Samhain. Its lovely to see how Samhain is being celebrated all over the world.
I love hearing about the traditional meanings behind holidays so much. It’s absolutely fascinating. Thank you! 🖤 This has been my first year really embracing my spiritual side so I’m not totally comfortable with rituals and things of that nature but I have been, and am, trying to sprinkle a little more magic into holidays this year and celebrate them a like more conscientiously. I think I will make a mini and more manageable “feast” for my small family (hoping to anyway). But I will probably do it the day before as I have a little one and we’ll be doing Halloween festivities with him on the 31st. But there will *definitely* be cider! We’re carving our pumpkins this weekend and I’m really looking forward to it! I’m also working on a protection wreath for my front door and I may make a spruced up a cinnamon broom as well. I’m not down with the spirits so I’m a little nervous I want to be as safe as I can manage, and have a little extra cushion around me in general because I have no idea what this blue moon is going to bring! But until I get more comfortable and understanding of the spirit world I’m going to hold off on more elaborate things. I hope everyone has an enjoyable Samhain, however you choose to celebrate it!!
Right now I'm baking some test pan de muertos and hoping to adapt it to my coven's Samhain celebration this weekend! I've also harvested some chicory that I hope to enjoy while we bake the bread together
we used to have big bonfires here for halloween here in ireland. but they clamped down on them as they got way out of control. like 30ft massive out of control. but they were so much fun and felt very spiritual
Lovely video and I love how much Info you pack into your videos! I am just not sure about the accuracy of the dumb supper as a wiccan thing as it actually a very old tradition that goes back a couple of hundred years (at least where I live)
Glad you liked the video! That's interesting about the dumb supper, I wasn't able to find any historic references to it when I was researching for this video but it's definitely possible that the tradition is much older. Let me know if you find any info about where the tradition originates. I'd love to learn more. :)
@@ScarletRavenswood I will DM you my sources later as I just researched it yesterday for my Samhain video :D I just need to check if I used any English sources or only German ones. have a wonderful day
I'm glad someone else mentioned this.. the dumb supper has been around for a long time. I'm pretty sure Barmbrack was also shared on this night.. will also hunt for resources!
Walking in my tiny little strip of "woods", maybe a fire, and then casting a circle and inviting the ancestors (only the ones who come in peace and love, there are some crazies up that tree) and sitting quietly with them sharing apples, cider and gluten-free cookies.
If the Fire Season is over, my family/coven are planning on a bonfire, and as it is a Blue Moon, we will be doing Shadow Work on ourselves. Hopefully, it will be warm enough for skyclad, but we have warm robes if not. It is nice having a Pagan family, my wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandson.
I had invited my pagan friends over for a celebration potluck where we each make a dish and set aside an offering plate for the goddess and horned one and after eating I had planned on some divination then after that we were to write down 2 things 1 old that is to be released and 1 new that is wanted to come in the new year and then walk out to my fire pit and burn our paper offerings and set out supper for the ancients.... That was the plan anyway but COVID hit so its going to be a quiet evening of ritual and meditation of those past and what is yet to come....
I don't personally celebrate Samhain specifically myself but I do celebrate Dísablót which in quite a few ways very similar. Either way I love this time of year next to Yule, but who doesn't love Yule lol. I love the energy we all contribute into the air around this time. It really does make it even more magical and special. I like to visualize all that energy as a beacon for our ancestors to make it easier for them to find their way and to let them know they are still remembered, loved, and missed. Like a kind of HEY PARTY OVER HERE WEVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU! Blessed be and Skål!
I just found yoi bc I'm looking into proper pronunciation of Samhain (learned about Wicca on my own pre TH-cam and Wikipedia age when resources on internet were quiet small, plus I was a kid lol). I looooove what you said about having a big feasting gathering and I could so picture it in my mind. You got my subscribe 💛💛💛🙏🙏🙏 I'm a Slav, but who feels mostly connected to ancient Nords and anything close to that. And I'm a sucker for any ancient wisdom lol the more primal and rooted in Earth the better for me.
the description of how pagans celebrate Samhain sounds pretty much how my Mexican family celebrates the day of the dead. We start making an altar on the 31st of October and keep it through November 2nd, and put food out on the altar for our ancestors. Then we invite our family and we have a small feast, dance, and play games.
The Mexican Day of the Dead is super fascinating as it's a combo of ancient Aztec beliefs and Catholic All Souls Day traditions (which were inspired by Celtic Samhain celebrations).
Thank you! Your videos are always really interesting and informative! I am not a patreon but I do so love the pen pal idea! My Samhain Altar is filled with old pictures and artifacts from my parents and ancestors from Italy as well as fall foliage, foods and drinks for them. 🍁🍂✨🌕
Since working nights I’ve always worked Samhain, this year however I will not! Thank you for sharing some of the older traditions. Last year I made the mulled cider you talked about and listened to the Halloween episode of Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis. This year I should be able to listen to it either live or listen at my coworkers house later. I think I may include some special food and mantle lanterns in my celebrations as well.
Scarlet Ravenswood you should listen to last nights episode if you can. Unfortunately he’s not uploading them for free anymore. His show is the #1 show at night on the Fringe FM and on the internet. Used to be #3 in America. But he’s had to go completely independent with no broadcasting companies to back him up. If you look up the website Aftermath.FM you can listen to the show in it’s entirety when it airs for free. It runs 7pm to 10pm with a 30 minute Facebook live chat after the show 5 nights a week.
It is an Irish Celtic Festival, Celtic is an umbrella term, it is also not a holiday, it's a festival. As Samhain is an Irish festival the term Irish Pagan and Irish Celtic is important. It is a living culture, one that is practiced and is part of our daily lives.
I love samhin it's my favorite holiday season of the year . I just came across this video and I love thier is more history to it then I realized. I celebrate my samhinall of October . I celebrate samhin with some wish , and supernatural spells with some pumpkin carving and baking sweets and shareing them with my neighbors
Excellent video, learned a lot. Interesting to see which traditions continued when I grew up in Dublin (such as the bonfire) and which died off (such as the dance). One small note. Aos sí would be pronounced "eese she" (aos sounds like geese). 'Ao' in Irish is pronounced 'ee' like in the name Aoife (pronounced eefa).
This will be my 42nd Samhain. This Samhain will be solemn, since we lost a member of our family this Summer. Yet, we’ll have a Full Moon, so maybe a little under-the-moon send off to the year.
Girl, I would so, so, SO love to attend such a gathering! My dream is to own a small plot of land and build some sort of stone circle to hold gatherings of my own in--especially for Beltane and Samhain. I'd love to invite drummers, and of course have a bonfire in the center of the stones! And I'll be damned if there won't be food and drinks. Celtic pagans might not have community centers available for public use, but who's to say we can't still have gatherings that would do our ancestors proud! ^^
Hello, I love your channel. I will be holding a dumb supper for mine and my husband's ancestors this year for is here for Samhain. My question is what do we do with the food and drink offerings after we are done with the supper and thanking our past loved ones for joining us?? Thank you and Blessed Be
Hey I love the video and wanted offer a quick correction to keep in the spirit of not appropriating Irish culture... the term Aos Si (newer)Aes Sidhe (older) (pronounced A- Shee) is a term that means people of the mounds.. So the "Fae" is a modern word used in later literature, fictional stories, Wicca and pop culture. Its used to describe a collective of beings not "akin to the fae". Also they don't like to be called "fairy's/ fae". Indigenous Irish people or people who follow Indigenous Irish Spirituality that live in Ireland, who live these traditions and participate actively in the beliefs use terms like.. "the good neighbours"/ "good folk" or "the good people".. there's lots more.. lol. Hope anyone reading enjoys their upcoming celebrations!
7 day celebration is how I celebrate. Bonfire is the center of this celebration. My ancestors will be central on the altar. I celebrate two of three cultural ways. I'm Irish, German, and Cherokee. I celebrate Celtic style and also heathen style. All three have their warrior societies. All three celebrate our ancestors and Gods and Goddesses. Spirits of sky and earth. The elements that make up our world. The spirits of those elements and those of pure spirit. Of past, present, and future. In this night we ask the ancestors who live now in all times and all places to look at what may be for our future. For the strength to go through what comes, and for favor and things good for us, that we live in plenty and in the strength and wisdom they have given us. There's so much more I can say, but do your own research.
I also...as a North American Wiccan, like to attune the old Celtic ways of the old countries to the land around here in Western Canada. I live here after all and my culture is that of North America with a nod to my Celtic and Saxon ancestors.
Thanks for telling some of the original traditions. Walking through two bonfires to cleanse sounds good! I could probably not eat anything that is eaten in such evenings but it sounds like much more fun than the sitting quietly although l really don't like to talk while eating. I will choose the quiet option for sure this year. Nobody here to celebrate with anyway! Except for ancestors. I am having lucid dreams since Tuesday alreasy ans feel energies like never before. I'm usually pretty down to earth. Not so this year! Blessed and safe Samhain everyone!
From my studies through life i believe these holidays at this time of year from dia de los muerto's to samheim may all be linked to the meteorite impact that hit up in canada around 12,000 years ago sparking the younger dryas! every year around his time we pass through the taurid meteor shower.. just food for thought, enjoyed the video! thanks for sharing!
I think we are going to spend the day doing old fashioned "halloween" activities like making caramel apples and popcorn balls, then, as the sun goes down, we will have a bonfire.
Hey I wanted to ask a question! Been search for the past few days for more info on this. I know we should come out of the broom closet but, my husband who I do share everything with is a Christian and just this past week I've always wanted to study witchcraft and if anyone found out it's just not the right time. Anyway. If you know of good videos that could help like good resources that are maybe free that I can get on my phone or another video or one of yours that maybe talks about how to survive in the broom closet cause I wanna keep learning but its hard with the people around me. Thanks for reading
As a kid I love trick or treating , but as a adult all I want to do is decorate my house with fall decor drink cider and eat candy. Thank you for your concern, but I suspect most people here consider it unwarrented.
Blessed Be.

Since my original plans have had to change, I've decided to take the weekend off for Hallowe'en, build a fire, do a ritual, and do some drumming.
@@ScarletRavenswood I've heard that the Irish language is, at it's core, connected to Sanskrit! I'm going to have to do more research to affirm this!
Well we know both Irish an Sanskrit share a common linguistic ancestor. So it makes sense they would have some cultural and religious overlap.

Definitely having bonfire seen as there's loads of branches cut down in the garden. Especially since I've been leaning a lot towards Celtic paganism while I'm figuring out my path with growing up in northern England (and loving visiting Scotland)
I would love to visit northern England and Scotland someday soon. :)
Blessed be.
That sounds like a lovely plan for Samhain :)
National pagan pride is usually in October in Nashville Tennessee get some cool items.
This video is so cool. I am Eclectic in my craft so I am interested in trying some of these traditions this year
I also felt the need to reconnect with the tradition of our ancestors as well. Bless you sister🙏 wish you a pleasing celebration
I am getting back to my pagan roots and you are helping me learn how, thanks :)

for me it's secular and magical.I have the advantage of living in the North East and for many years lived in New york maybe 20 miles from sleepy hollow-yeah that sleepy hollow, so there's a good appreciation for the time of year.
"Elton John"...Im trying to figure out what you mean...youre dressed as him or playing his music? Or something else? Are you the real Elton?

That sounds like an amazing community event! :)

Thank you! 🖤
This has been my first year really embracing my spiritual side so I’m not totally comfortable with rituals and things of that nature but I have been, and am, trying to sprinkle a little more magic into holidays this year and celebrate them a like more conscientiously.
I've also harvested some chicory that I hope to enjoy while we bake the bread together

the description of how pagans celebrate Samhain sounds pretty much how my Mexican family celebrates the day of the dead. It is an Irish Celtic Festival, Celtic is an umbrella term, it is also not a holiday, it's a festival. As Samhain is an Irish festival the term Irish Pagan and Irish Celtic is important. It is a living culture, one that is practiced and is part of our daily lives.

As a pagan I find it a lot more difficult finding information that's not just wiccan :')
I think a lot of ancestral traditions have been run over by a normalized Wiccan religion. Almost too normalized.

Hey I love the video and wanted offer a quick correction to keep in the spirit of not appropriating Irish culture... the term
Aos Si (newer)Aes Sidhe (older) (pronounced A- Shee) is a term that means people of the mounds..

I love this time of the fall season
There's so much more I can say, but do your own research.
thank you Doug , this helps me alot , and you have a great mix of cultures
I also...as a North American Wiccan, like to attune the old Celtic ways of the old countries to the land around here in Western Canada. I live here after all and my culture is that of North America with a nod to my Celtic and Saxon ancestors.
I love that you are doing this! Would it be possible to add a list of resources you used? I would love to read more about this myself too!
Sure, I started with the Wikipedia article on Samhain and then took a look at some of the sources listed in the bibliography.
