  • Benny heads out for a slide with minimal modifications to the car.
    In this episode of the budget drift build, Benny continues with the mods installing some fresh coilovers along with extra steering lock, all in preparation for the upcoming SparesBox event at our local track.
    Benny's Custom Works brings you everything automotive!
    Weekly Episodes right here on TH-cam, as well as the shop with new & used performance parts for most Japanese makes and models.

      Wow, DOHC V8s fit in these things? I have been thinking about how interesting it would be to swap a Ford DOHC 4.6 in an IS, or a Coyote 5.0l. The stock Mustang MT82 would probably be a better trans choice than a gigantic T56/TR6060, that and I really like the 1:1 5th/single OD 6-speed setup of the MT82.
      REALLY want to do that swap(if the DOHC Fords aren't wider than the the UZs anyway), ideally with a Haltech Elite, limited slip out back, stick a Ground Control setup in the wheel wells, have a nice daily/drift/dick around car. Could even stick a centrifugal blower on it down the road, make an EASY 600+ wheel with a unique swap.
      That said, I REALLY want to see the Tundra 5.7l swapped into some stuff, I don't think I've ever actually seen one swapped yet.

    If you want a car that drives nicely, raise it up 40-50mm from the spring adjusters, not from the lower housing adjuster. That way you will have proper shock movement, because the way the car is set-up now it rides at the top of the shocks, not allowing any wheel drop. Also if you can cut the camber on all sides and get as close to 0 in the back. This will make the car feel when starting the drift a lot more progressive.

    • @BigDosser69
      @BigDosser69 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BennysCustomWorks so there are a few different ways people do it, I think its based on what model year you have (even though they had same engine etc). I'd get a spare throttle body or two if you can. Essentially you need to disconnect the little 'arm' that connects the two throttles, and then stick some weld on the main bit where the actual butterfly valve is so when you pull the cable the valve actually does something. Disconnect the rest sensor (the white plug that looks different to the 2 TPS sensors). and then you can either keep the secondary throttle fully on (as if at 100% tps) or fully shut (will need experimentation).

  • @jasonwishart8153

    Bump steer adjusted via steering arms not roll centre. Roll centre is adjusted by changing pick up points or suspension arm length.

    • @BennysCustomWorks
      @BennysCustomWorks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jason Wishart changing the height of the balljoint does change the roll centre though . The aftermarket steering arms space the lower ball joint down 17mm. Whiteline make extended ball joints for Subaru for this reason and similar ball joint spacers are available for r32-34 GTR

    • @vinzenzgeske8987
      @vinzenzgeske8987 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here. I put 30mm Eibach lowering springs in my Mazda 3 BK to make the look work better with the original 17" wheels and everyone was like "Why only 30 mm?". And I said: "Do you even drive on these roads? Everything else would be suicide!"
      Before that, I had a Mercedes 190E (W201) with a -40mm Eibach/Bilstein combo (I bought it that way) and that was too low to even get to the Mercedes dealer.
      And then my brother-in-law put a 100mm lowering suspension in his Audi 100 Avant (Type 44) and he regretted it about two days down the line. It did look kinda cool, but there was barely any suspension travel left and you had to anticipate every bump and every pothole. This is no fun... He barely drove it until after 3 month he got so sick of it that he ripped it out without having a replacement ready :D
      That being said: Lowering springs are kind of fine as long as you have only 20 or 30mm of lowering. Even with the 30mm now, I kind of wished I had also bought shorter shocks. Not that I have any problems, just to ease my mind.

    • @ryleyjoynson31
      @ryleyjoynson31 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vinzenz Geske how much is ride comfort affected do you reckon? I’ve been thinking about getting springs for my bk for awhile now but I’m not 100% sure

    • @vinzenzgeske8987
      @vinzenzgeske8987 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ryleyjoynson31 It didn't really change all that much. I did change the shocks for new (stock) ones and replaced the top strut mounts so I couldn't compare it directly. But I'd say about as much as switching from 16" to 17" inch rims.
      So it's a bit firmer but not harsh at all. Where I live, the streets aren't really well maintained but I have no regrets changing to lowering springs.

    How does one improve the throttle response?

    • @Dutub2000
      @Dutub2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are lots of factors that affect throttle response. On the fuel side, make sure that the pump works as it should (eventually upgrade), fuel filter is fresh, you could go for better quality (stiffer) fuel lines, make sure the injectors are up to scratch. Also clean spark plugs help.
      As well as cold air intake, uprated throttle, intake manifold (ITB is not easy, but probably the best bet) as well as good headers and exhaust. All the engine mods obviously have to be matched correctly and tuned accordingly. A tune in itself might work too. Basically "throttle response" is how rapidly you can pump air and fuel through the engine.

    • @aDaWaN

    Roll centre moves down when you lower a car, not up, and it moves down much further than the centre of gravity does, this acts to increase roll couple and the body rolling force exerted by the vehicles weight in cornering. This is why it is a bad thing, a work around for cars where roll centre correction is difficult is to fit a stiffer swaybay on lower ride heights but this reduces independence in the suspension

    I would like to point out that hitting the steering arm damages it. It messes with the composition of the metal by way of the blow of the hammer upsetting it. Tuning forks for removing these joints are cheap as bread. Best buy one of those and hit it. AND YES, i know, everyone and their mother has "done it and hasn't had anything happen to them". But for those that have had the joint break, this is the reason why it happens.

      Pickle forks are typically useless in junky rusted 10-15 year old vehicles that most people drive here in the united states. You either hit it with a 3 lb sledge hammer, an air hammer, or you replace the entire steering knuckle because it's corroded shit.

    If you ever get a car stuck on a hoist and cant get the arms out coz its too low.....lift the car til the wheels are off the ground, put some blocks of wood under each wheel and drop the car onto them. problem solved

    Can I buy your old coilovers ?

  • @tx390
    @tx390 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Always roll the car out after installing coilovers to let the geometry settle before measuring and adjusting ride height. Avoids hotboi stance mishaps. Also, if you are planning on drifting, rear lower then front, and those spring rates are waaaaaay too stiff. Drifting generally 30% stiffer then factory, if underpowered go 50% in the rear. Heavy springs won't absorb suspension geometry change on transitions and will make the car super twitchy. Just food for thought... ✌

    Should really do some better research, those knuckle adapter are terrible. Do a decent front steering set up with some extended LCA and heyman knuckles. 16kg probably still a touch too soft for drifting in my opinion.
