I never get tired of watching this series...I don't think another will ever match it. All the talk was about the KLM line but Valeri Kamenski was star at 21 years old. If there are two players I was really happy to see win a Stanley Cup it was Ray Bourque and Val Kamenski...both winning with Colorado...(honourable mention to Lanny and Ovie). Kamenski scoring Colorado's first goal as a franchise after leaving Quebec. The NHL is the game it is today because of these series...its now truly the best of the best playing.
Although the 72 series was the one the most Iconic sporting events of all time, the 87 series had its own history after the game. Arguably Team Canada 87 was the best team that was ever assembled and the Soviets were more than competitive. Little did the Soviets know this was the last time the team would practice together for an entire year. Three events heralded the end of the Cold War: the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the reunification of Germany in 1990 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and European hockey players including Russians showed up on our shores. From that point on the powerful Soviet hockey machine ceased to exist. Great events for the world and Democracy, those who lived through this time period and had a chance to cherish these series, should never forget, its unlikely we will see anything like this again.

Actually that is debatable. You were paraphrasing Dmitriev (the second coach). Kasatonov was saying that Mario was much tougher to play against than Gretzky. With Gretzky he would attack him at the moment he would get the puck - he was to weak to get free. Bure was saying that Gretzky was standout even over the KLM line. I agree with Bure. I think that KLM line with Fetisov/Kasatonov played together for like 7 years prior to this tournament and was the best as a UNIT besides being remarkable individually. But Gretzky was a WIZARD, a puppeteer who was pulling strings sitting above the ice level. I also would like to single out Coffey. He was an offensive defender USSR never had. His incision rushes were crucial to the Canadian victory as well as the Gretzky's wizardry and Mario's execution. On two occasions Gretzky said that the USSR team was better than the Canadian one but Canada had a better goalie and Tikhonov was out-coached by Keenan by constantly shuffling their lines. He did not mention that he was better than anybody on the ice. he had 21 points overall, Mario 18.

I lived in Hamilton and not only watched them practice every day but because I had an association with the guy who ran the biggest hockey equipment store in Hamilton and was a developer of the old Kenesky goalie pads I met up with him one day after their practice and he got me into the Sheraton Hotel where all the teams were playing and I literally got to hang out in the lobby with everyone. All the big stars from all the teams were there. The 1972 Summit Series had just came out on VHS and was on the TV in the lobby and I stood around watching it with Mess, Bourque, Mario, Hawerchuk, Gretz, and all the rest. Hilarious thing is Chris Nilan was my favorite fighter back then and he actually played for team USA and getting to meet him was the only guy I kinda clammed up and got star-struck as funny as that is now lol But as to your comment, you had to see these guys in practice when they were kinda showing off. The only way to describe the way they threw the puck around was like they were playing lacrosse. Mario would have guys fire wrist shots for passes at him in the air as he was doing breakout drills and the bastard would not only catch the passes in stride with his stick but literally cradle the puck down to the ice. It looked fake lol. You'd watch him and people would be looking at each there like WTF is going on it's like the blade of his stick is an actual magnet and the puck is steel lol
Messier's gigantic ego is never more evident than on his assist on the first goal (Norman Rochefort)... he skates the length of the ice, by himself, arms thrust jubilantly in the air, Rochefort even seems surprised, trying to catch up to him, almost as if to say, yeah, uh, Mess, i was part of that play too.
We had tickets for game 3 and we put the tickets on the coffee table so you had to look past them to see the TV lol. Being from Hamilton we didn't get NHL hockey in person and this was the best of the best but if Russian wins the game our tickets and our game 3 experience were dead lol. Then double over-time lol. When Mario scored I literally blacked out from pure excitement. Then we got to experience game 3 which was as epic as the first two games. Watching that team win with those guys playing for Canada against Russia is still like a dream it was so far out of the normal life of someone from Hamilton.
I lived there 30 years but unfortunately was too young for this or the 1990 Memorial Cup won by my eventual favourite OHL team from Oshawa. NHLPA 4 on 4 challenge at Copps was my first exposure to NHL players. Thankfully all these youtubers put them up.

But Russia should have the better team since they played together for years, while team Canada was together for less than a month. Gretzky had a much better PPG average than Mario the season following the Canada Cup (1987/88). But Gretzky missed 16 games due to injury. Gretzky actually outscored Mario in the Canada Cup, 21 points to 18 points (both played the same 9 games).

Gretzky was double shifted for most of the 2nd, 3rd period and overtime. The Russians had a hard time keeping track of him. Total of six goals for Canada and five assists for Gretzky. Many call this game, including Gretzky, his finest.

It took Mike Keenan almost 2 and a half periods before he realized that Lemieux should play on Gretzky's wing even strength instead of just on the PP. What a boner, just keep chewin' those seeds Mikey.
He said in interviews he wanted to save that look for nearer the end when it mattered most, and it worked. Keenan was a POS but he was also a Cup winner in both the NHL and KHL, and went to the SC finals 2 other times. He's the 5th winningest coach in NHL history. The second double-overtime game ended very late - I learned of the result in the morning on radio and watched it knowing the result. I was shown not in its entirety because it was too long. Secondly, the elite hockey players lived "on base" 11 months out of a year. The "Red Army" players were practically ALL officers of the army, they lived i Arkhangelskoe under a military regiment, had 1 telephone ONLY in the building, would go there after every game - not home. When the father of one of the players was dying, Tikhonov would not let him pay the last respects. I suggest you do more research. And it was true that they had way more money than an ordinary citizen and other. Which all disappeared at the collapse of the USSR. Only those who played at the NHL at the moment did well. Before 1972, if asked...Not a single Canadian could name one Soviet Player...that all changed in a hurry over those historic 8 games in September of 72..and the many series and meetings to follow. By game 4 in Vancouver...everyone knew the names Kharlamov, Yakushev,Petrov,Mikhailov,Maltsev,Vasiliev,Tsyagnkov,Gusev,Ragulin and of course Tretiak.
Larry i knew of Alexander Ragulin and others for years before the series. i watched 68 Olypmpic game between Canada and Russia. Also watched the 72 Olympics. The Russians played in Canada many times through the 1960s.

I was a student from the UK working in Toronto in the summer of 87. I was utterly transfixed by the series and this second game I am told was the greatest in history. It is breathtaking.
Obviously if the Officiating in this Series was NOT BIASED against the Soviet Union Team the Soviet's would have WON the 1987 Canada Cup Ice Hockey Tournament under Coach VIKTOR TIKHONOV and His creative Game Plan Methods. If you watch the Series on Videos you will see exactly what I mean!
Soviets thought Koharski, who refereed two games, was a fair ref. I don't see the bias except a bit in game 2 from Stewart, but it isn't bias as much as he is just dumb.

And as for Lemieux’s first retirement (745 games), Gretzky had an insane 2.4 PPG average after the same number of games, and a better GPG average (of course). It shouldn’t shock anyone that Gretzky’s PPG average dropped during the approximate 600 games he played past age 31. Lemieux only played 170 games past age 31. Basically 2 seasons worth of games compared to Gretzky’s 7 seasons worth of games past age 31.
Just watched this game again and by far Canada's best defensemen in this series was Ray Bourque. It was his great play that set up the game winning goal in overtime and he lead all defensemen in scoring during the 87 Canada cup,not to mention he was also Canada's most reliable defensively

Maybe the best forward squad ever assembled, but the D leaves a lot to be desired. After Bourque and Coffey the defensive depth takes a nose dive.

I lived in Hamilton and not only watched them practice every day but because I had an association with the guy who ran the biggest hockey equipment store in Hamilton and was a developer of the old Kenesky goalie pads I met up with him one day after their practice and he got me into the Sheraton Hotel where all the teams were playing and I literally got to hang out in the lobby with everyone. All the big stars from all the teams were there. The 1972 Summit Series had just came out on VHS and was on the TV in the lobby and I stood around watching it with Mess, Bourque, Mario, Hawerchuk, Gretz, and all the rest. Hilarious thing is Chris Nilan was my favorite fighter back then and he actually played for team USA and getting to meet him was the only guy I kinda clammed up and got star-struck as funny as that is now lol
But as to your comment, you had to see these guys in practice when they were kinda showing off. The only way to describe the way they threw the puck around was like they were playing lacrosse. Mario would have guys fire wrist shots for passes at him in the air as he was doing breakout drills and the bastard would not only catch the passes in stride with his stick but literally cradle the puck down to the ice. It looked fake lol. You'd watch him and people would be looking at each there like WTF is going on it's like the blade of his stick is an actual magnet and the puck is steel lol
Messier's gigantic ego is never more evident than on his assist on the first goal (Norman Rochefort)... he skates the length of the ice, by himself, arms thrust jubilantly in the air, Rochefort even seems surprised, trying to catch up to him, almost as if to say, yeah, uh, Mess, i was part of that play too.

What a hockey game!
We had tickets for game 3 and we put the tickets on the coffee table so you had to look past them to see the TV lol. Being from Hamilton we didn't get NHL hockey in person and this was the best of the best but if Russian wins the game our tickets and our game 3 experience were dead lol. Then double over-time lol. When Mario scored I literally blacked out from pure excitement. Then we got to experience game 3 which was as epic as the first two games. Watching that team win with those guys playing for Canada against Russia is still like a dream it was so far out of the normal life of someone from Hamilton.
I lived there 30 years but unfortunately was too young for this or the 1990 Memorial Cup won by my eventual favourite OHL team from Oshawa. NHLPA 4 on 4 challenge at Copps was my first exposure to NHL players. Thankfully all these youtubers put them up.
Every time the camera pans to Mike Keenan, he looks like the clueless dork the NHL finally figured out that he was.

I remember also I think in 1981 USSR Team best Canada 6-0 or 8-1 you remember? Fetisov , Trettiak and lariomov (very young.) in 1984 I think team Canada wom in overtime i think. USSR/ Russia always as this beautiful hockey skating and passing. People in the province of Quebec (French) like (Montreal Canadiens) but in Quebec we love beautiful passing and skating and always love fast artistic hockey.. not like English Canada that likes fighting and slow hockey. Always the same. In 1987 the Canada was very lucky and had lots help from the Zebra’s. USSR looked better. They look more organized. Faster. Juste love watching. Problem with Canada ithe players were together only maybe 3.4 weeks. Mike Keenan was a bad coach he didn’t choose the best players. But 3-4 weeks is too little to be organized. Victor tikhonov was always coaching your team. Very good coach. Big reason the Russian look much more organized. And more synchronized. Today in Canada and USA learned a lot from the Russian system and copied European countries. We studied idefensive systems.

The Russian should have won the last game. The ref let a lot go. 100% favoured team Canada. The Russian had the better team. That’s Coming from a team Canada fan. But Russia should have the better team since they played together for years, while team Canada was together for less than a month. But if that team Canada played together for years they would be just as good maybe better because of Mario. He was only 21 here and was prohibited by Keenan to carry the puck, he was told to give it to Wayne as soon as he got it. Not a bad play I guess. Anyway. The Russian did not have anyone to stop him. The nhl either for that matter. Mike Keenan over coached in my opinion. Granted it is hard to coach a new team. Mario outscored Gretzky by 50 points that year.
Gretzky had a much better PPG average than Mario the season following the Canada Cup (1987/88). But Gretzky missed 16 games due to injury.
Gretzky actually outscored Mario in the Canada Cup, 21 points to 18 points (both played the same 9 games).

It took Mike Keenan almost 2 and a half periods before he realized that Lemieux should play on Gretzky's wing even strength instead of just on the PP. What a boner, just keep chewin' those seeds Mikey.
He said in interviews he wanted to save that look for nearer the end when it mattered most, and it worked. Keenan was a POS but he was also a Cup winner in both the NHL and KHL, and went to the SC finals 2 other times. He's the 5th winningest coach in NHL history. He's a douchebag but you can't argue he's a good coach.

The second double-overtime game ended very late - I learned of the result in the morning on radio and watched it knowing the result. I was shown not in its entirety because it was too long. Secondly, the elite hockey players lived "on base" 11 months out of a year. The "Red Army" players were practically ALL officers of the army, they lived i Arkhangelskoe under a military regiment, had 1 telephone ONLY in the building, would go there after every game - not home. When the father of one of the players was dying, Tikhonov would not let him pay the last respects. I suggest you do more research. And it was true that they had way more money than an ordinary citizen and other. Which all disappeared at the collapse of the USSR. Only those who played at the NHL at the moment did well. Before 1972, if asked...Not a single Canadian could name one Soviet Player...that all changed in a hurry over those historic 8 games in September of 72..and the many series and meetings to follow. By game 4 in Vancouver...everyone knew the names Kharlamov, Yakushev,Petrov,Mikhailov,Maltsev,Vasiliev,Tsyagnkov,Gusev,Ragulin and of course Tretiak.
Larry i knew of Alexander Ragulin and others for years before the series. i watched 68 Olypmpic game between Canada and Russia. Also watched the 72 Olympics. The Russians played in Canada many times through the 1960s.

Obviously if the Officiating in this Series was NOT BIASED against the Soviet Union Team the Soviet's would have WON the 1987 Canada Cup Ice Hockey Tournament under Coach VIKTOR TIKHONOV and His creative Game Plan Methods. If you watch the Series on Videos you will see exactly what I mean!
Soviets thought Koharski, who refereed two games, was a fair ref. I don't see the bias except a bit in game 2 from Stewart, but it isn't bias as much as he is just dumb.

Rochefort played for the Quebec Nordiques at the time. Serge Savard -- who was the GM of the Montreal Canadiens -- insisted on putting Rochefort on the roster because he had noticed how well Quebec played against Montreal with him in the lineup, and how poorly they played when he was out for a lengthy injury a couple of years earlier.

Gretzky had a 2.33 PPG average (Lemieux 1.88) and the better GPG average as well after the same 915 games Lemieux played. And as for Lemieux’s first retirement (745 games), Gretzky had an insane 2.4 PPG average after the same number of games, and a better GPG average (of course). It shouldn’t shock anyone that Gretzky’s PPG average dropped during the approximate 600 games he played past age 31. Lemieux only played 170 games past age 31. Basically 2 seasons worth of games compared to Gretzky’s 7 seasons worth of games past age 31.

Just watched this game again and by far Canada's best defensemen in this series was Ray Bourque. It was his great play that set up the game winning goal in overtime and he lead all defensemen in scoring during the 87 Canada cup,not to mention he was also Canada's most reliable defensively
