Great hockey, both teams were excellent. What I liked most was seeing players from other countries that we didn't know much about. It was great to see so many great players from outside the NHL. Back in 87 we didn't have the internet our access to the channel we have today, 24 - 7 info. Watching the current World Cup of Hockey and the Olympics we know every player. Players don't have that same feeling now as they are teammates with lots of the players from other countries. Back in 87 every team was playing almost against an enemy, they all wanted to win in a different way than current players. Most current players are soft compared to back in those days. They are more worried about their Prof contracts and endorsement deals. The Russians were cold and treated hard by their country towards winning, losing was not acceptable. Current Russian players are high skilled but don't have the old school Russian winning at all cost attitude.
+Qanada Headlongs I always wished they had a poster of the best players of the 80s from behind wearing their double digit jersey numbers: 99 - Gretzky 66 - Lemieux 11 - Messier 77 - Coffey 77 - Bourque 33 - Roy
Before pro's played in the Olympics, this WAS the real Gold Medal tourny. Easily the best game I've seen in person. It was full speed at all time, crisp passing. The stakes were huge, the weight of a nation was upon them
Awesome series. I was pulling for Canada but I have to admit the Soviets were better. They were faster, passed better, had better puck handling skills. They were just awesome. Don't forget this was played in Canada so the Soviets were on the road, in a foreign country, on a small ice surface. Woulda liked to have seen best of seven with some games in the Soviet Union.
The Soviets trained and played 11 out of 12 months together for many years, the Canadians literally were a mix of NHL players from various teams, put together a for a few weeks before playing. The fact that they competed and won tells you about the spirit and pride of Canadian hockey.
@@SliptreamSaint While it’s true that this Soviet National team was a more jelled team, it’s a myth that the entire Soviet team trained and played for 11 out of 12 months. Only the first two units of this specific national team played together for the entire season (CSKA), the rest of the players and the starting goalie were from other clubs (Dinamo Moscow, Soviet Wings, Traktor, Salvat Yulaev, and Dinamo Riga).
Definitely just a cry baby comment. The most egregious example of biased officiating was in the 1972 series, where the refs were clearly on the Soviet side.

I suppose that Canada's method of throwing it into the R end and then digging for it on the boards is thought either to come up w the puck or to force a faceoff. faster, YES. But hockey today is not remotely as physical as it was in the 80s. There is very minimal bodychecking in today's NHL; it is very comparable to the women's game which bans intentional bodychecking.
Yes but that is because everything is a system. Players dont make as many mistakes as they used to since defense is taught so well. When the Europeans/Russians flooded the NHL in the early 90s the play-style changed forever.
these games are much better hockey than what we typically see today. They maybe quicker today in some respects, but the flow of the game is slower, more grindy, and the passes are not handled as quickly, or as creatively.

I always laugh a little whenever a hockey play-by-play guy says "it's centered out in front." Why do they say "in front"? Where else is the puck ever centered?
1:25:32 I'm surprised to hear that the Soviet team was not that great at changing on the fly. I would've thought having five-man units would make this easier and constantly mixing and matching your lines, like Keenan and Bowman like to do, would cause more 'too many men on the ice' penalties.

I can only add to whining. Even though Canada had x10 less population in 1987 (vs USSR), they had x100 hockey rinks and equipment. And hockey wasn't sport #1 in USSR. It was winter pass time while waiting for soccer season. And Soviet rinks where around 5K people capacity. Even today, with Russia having x4 population of Canada, Canada has around 3300 indoor rinks, while Russia - 550. Besides, in that USSR team everyone was Russian native. Which is to say that hockey was practically non-existent in the most parts of USSR.
That´s one of the very best hockey games ever played, period.
