I'm not sure I like the idea that the plate and the rope can be opened up during use on the 3. The plate is captured by the carabiner on the 2.

When you switch rope or need to pass a knot at height, you cant drop it as easy?

Thank you for the info I've made my mind up now. I was edging towards the Love2 but because of your comparison video I'm definitely going for the Lov3. I only intend Top rope soloing, I'm not really Interested in Lead rope soloing. Can't wait to get my hands on it and get going. My girlfriend is too light and too small to belay me. She also has a lower back problem so the Lov3 will be perfect. We can now climb together, me belaying her as I normally do and me Top rope soloing. Hopefully she will love to have a go herself with the Lov3 too sometime.

Your going to have a blast, the Lov2/3 opens up so many more fantastic opportunities for climbing. Enjoy yourselves.

Thanks for this, was really struggling to work out the difference between the 2 and the 3 and any benefits of one or the other for TRS. If anything, this has convinced me to get the 2 as it seems there's a theoretical failure mode on the 3 if the spring-loaded button was to be depressed accidentally. Do you think that makes sense?
I know you address it and it seems quite unlikely, but it seems like there's no real advantage to the 3 if you don't need to load and unload the rope while on the rope.

Hi Thanks for your comments appreciated, and everyone else who has contributed too.
Theoretically under the right conditions or the wrong conditions is the probably the best way to describe it, the taz 3 could in theory be depressed and the side plate open in a million to 1 situation. But after using the taz 3 for quite some time now top rope soloing I've come to the conclusion that it is very unlikely this would happen its never happened to me upto now. When the taz 3 is loaded the plate is designed so it stays solid on the carabiner making the plate unable to rotate and open even if the button is pressed by accident. It has to be unweighted first, then the button depressed then the plate physically rotated to take it off the rope. After many falls planned and unplanned in different scenarios on different routes the fall distance is negligible and hardly any forces are put onto the rope or the Taz 3 whatsoever. Its a pleasure to use and highly recommended for top rope soloing. I swear by it. Its opened up so many new doors to my climbing experience. I also have the taz 2 as down in the vid.
Once again just to reiterate the only difference between both devices is the taz 3 can be loaded/unloaded onto the rope whilst never needing to take it off your carabiner. Brilliant if you have a fear of dropping it.
Personally if you already have a taz 2 no probs perfect I wouldn't upgrade to the taz 3. But if in the market for your first taz then I would go for the 3.
Me and my partner have both I prefer the 2 she prefers the 3 lol.
      Happy top rope soloing.

Been torn between this or a grandwall uascend for TR solo the sea cliffs down here in cornwall. Reckon ths Taz is the way to go, since its so easy to ab back down and redo sections etc. 🤷‍♂️

Do you have any concern that the cleat is plastic? I wonder why they didn't just use a metal cleat like the rest of the device. Is there a scenario where the plastic cleat could experience forces that would break it? If so, would it cause catastrophic failure resulting in a fall?

    • @pbeb3081

      Hi,
Good question, yeah I've wondered myself why the tension cleat is plastic and not metal. I thought a few things one being maybe because of the forces of friction on the rope when abseiling i.e too much heat build up? But the channel the rope sits in is all metal too so I don't know why it's plastic and not metal. I've read on a few arborists and working at heights sites they do wear down a bit after a while, nothing significant though.
Taz do spares and a tutorial on how to remove and replace the cleat.
In my opinion it's bomber, it's fully enclosed within the side plates I just can't see anything happening to it. Apart from a little wear after a long period of being used.
Bearing in mind I only top rope solo where there are literally no major forces on the device when i take a fall.
Lead rope soloing I can't speak for as I have no experience. In a fall scenario there's a lot more forces involved but even then I can't envision it failing but no one can be 100% sure.
If the cleat did fail altogether I could imagine a few butt twitching moments because the device is held vertical on my chest harness so it runs smooth when climbing up. Without the cleat it would also run smooth down too which is a big a no no if you fell straight down and not out a bit. What the cleat does is put tension on the rope so what happens in a fall the tension cleat makes the device pivot when weighted causing it to rotate and grab the rope. Without the cleat I imagine it would still hold when weighted but not immediately and not quick enough for my liking as like the feeling of being caught straight away when taking a fall. To mitigate the risks use a secondary device below the Taz either a rollnlock (first choice) or a microtraxion. I've used both and both are spot on.
Both the Taz Lov2 and Lov3 in my opinion upto now using both have been bomber and as long as they are used within the manufacturers guidelines then happy days.
If anyone is in any doubt whatsoever use a rollnlock or a trax as a backup.

@@pbeb3081 Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Seems like a very well designed device. I would love if they (or anyone, really) started making a lead rope solo-specific device. Soloist and Silent Partners are impossible to come by anymore. And I haven't seen any other lead-solo device still in manufacturing - just lots of people using systems with GriGris or rigging/rescue devices for that purpose. Cheers.

Does your tension clear lock out if you pull it far away fro, the rope? Taz says it’s bad but don’t suggest a work around. Before I get a file to mine I thought I’d ask

    • @pbeb3081
      @pbeb3081  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi yeah it does stick now and again but to no adverse effect I've found upto now. I think Taz are just covering their a*ses saying what they are saying. I've heard about the file hack but to be honest and in my opinion there's nothing to worry about. But each to their own. It's down to the individual 👍

@@pbeb3081I'll use a backup for a while anyway... I can't really see how it would get stuck accidentally. Have you used the 3 much yet?

Hi yeah good idea if you're uncertain 👍 my wife uses the 3 I use the 2 no probs with either upto now we been using both for a good while now no probs upto now.
We both use a roll n lock as a back up but to be honest for top rope soloing I would use with or without personally.
