      My question is can the weld repair be done with the engine in the car or is it better to remove the engine so the parts can be cleaned properly and welded in???? MIG or TIG will be a factor also.

      @@robhunter2435Helium Arc welding. But you are right. Needs to remove the engine most likely because most Welders won’t do it in the cramped space.

    Thanks for the update. Glad you did not get hurt. Getting the parts welded, whether MIG or TIG will be tricky with the motor in. The parts must be extremely clean to get good penetration and strength. Looking forward for more of the repair on Donny

    Things happen and it goes to show even the smallest part failure can cause damage to other components. You were pretty lucky and count your blessings. Those of us that work on our own stuff have to have the skills and know how to make good solid repairs when needed. I love that you do your own wrenching and show it on your channel.

    Just your luck!! Took it with stride and got a pretty informative video from the carnage 💪🏼 Nothing but good things to say about the QA1 CF driveshaft with 900whp and aggressive road course/track driving. Definitely gives some peace of mind having it as a fuse vs having it tear anything else apart.

    Hey Alex take a look at the aluminum motor mounts that are bolted to the block make sure those are ok. They probably are but might be a good idea to make sure

    Mmr makes some braces that go from oil pan to the lower shield bolts on trans. Adds two more bellhousing bolts. I’ve welded ears back on with the braces and it work good

    I believe all of the mounting points for the starter are on the bell housing. I mocked up my starter on my 6R80 a while ago to see how it mounted up. All of the mounting holes can be seen in the shim plate. I'd still weld all of those pieces back on anyway.

    I'm sorry you had this bad luck Alex. This really sucks. Maybe take off the flex plate just to make sure there's no other damage - the welder will probably want it off too. Keeping my fingers crossed that the repair cost is as low as possible.

    The driveshaft looks like there’s no room to compress in that expansion part. So if the driveshaft couldn’t compress, if you hit a bump, suspension compress, weight from the force of the car going down could have damaged the u joint. Could have crushed the bearings and the centrifugal force fling the cap off, vibration, and then just how you described that violent vibration causing the carnage.

    Those bottom bolt holes that broke off are just for the transmission. The three starter bolts all go in to the trans bell housing. That broken ear below the starter won’t cause any issues with the starter. Starter centers on that steel spacer plate and bolts to the trans. Still sketchy, but you should be good to stick a new trans in it and roll on.

    The bottom ear on the right cylinder 1-4 side is also for the transmission.
    I’m about to put a Carbo driveshaft in my swapped 69 for the same reason you just said. I’d much rather the driveshaft explode rather than come through the floor.

    Odd failure, idk your setup but it would be a good idea while you’re under there to check your driveline angles with the suspension loaded to make sure you’re not maxing out the u-joints

    Tbh it looks like the engine and transmission werent lined up right which caused the drive shaft to fail. I usually grease the dowels and get the rust off so it slides in easily and support the front of the engine so it tilts up so the transmission can slide easily.

    When this happened to my gen 3 motor, welders told me that there was a risk of the engine cracking more as it cools. Cast aluminum is difficult to weld apparently.

      Said fuck it and ran it with the same cracked trans after I got the new clutch on and aside from it vibrating hard between 2750 rpm’s to 3250 rpm’s it drove fine.

    I've seen (and been in the car for) some nasty driveshaft failures. But it was always the shaft breaking or shearing. Even had a cheap shortened shaft soda straw up. But I've never seen block damage like that. Almost seems like not failing completely made it worse. Still better than coming through the floor or pole vaulting the car though.

    That’s nuts. I almost want to blame the clip or an assembly error. If that clip wasn’t seated properly and few out the centrifugal force through that cap out.

    On a real note, that's probably the most painful cause of destruction I've seen, a damn end cap clip basically wiped out a drivetrain. Sorry to see it happen, wish you luck!

    That's some carnage man sucks it happened. look into tripple A. i have it 100$ a year for 5 tows within 100 miles each, no charge. I use it a bunch when buying project cars i dont feel like towing home. It's one of those things you dont need it till ya need it.

    My ford tech friend told me about a F150 owner that tossed a shotgun into his truck. It went off, it went through the bellhousing, torque converter and broke the block right above the starter. The truck had 15,000 miles on it

      Base s197 5.0 w a manual isn't even quite 3600 stock. Im talking curb weight. They can be over 3600 if loaded but they aren't over 3700 unless it's a vert.

      For street use maybe the exhaust heat is too close for carbon driveshaft, definitely consult with driveshaft manufacturer first.

    When aldo was building my car, The car was on the dyno. The drive shaft went out. It took out the transmission. It took out the engine so had to start the build all over again.

    Had a similar thing happened with a 4v swap Fairmont with a t45. Ripped both lower mounting ears off the block and split the bellhousing all the way around. Set fuck it and LS swapped it. 6.0/T56 > 4V/T45
