    Never let your ego keep you from using a funnel. Never.
    That bolt business reminded me of something when I was talking with a delivery driver back in the seventies. He showed up with a new semi one day. He told us that whenever his company got a new truck their chief mechanic had the guys go over it and tighten to specification every visible bolt and nut. He had found that when a truck arrived from the factory some bolts/nuts were not properly tightened. Walk along any road and you'll find bolts, nuts, miscellaneous parts. I once found 27 bolts/nuts/screws/misc. parts on the 400 yard walk from McDonald's to my business . . . in a single day.

      FOD is worth the effort in aircraft, it's worth the effort on something you drive. I once picked up a brand new motorcycle from a dealer, rode if five miles home then set down and started going over it. The front axle was held in place by about three threads of the axle nut and there was not cotter pin. ALWAYS double check your work when machinery is involved. Heck, same holds true of software too.

    In 1979 we installed a.327 in my father's 240Z along with a 350 turbo transmission. He placed over 100,000 on that car as his daily before feeling like rust was to much. Actually now realizing it wasn't that bad.
    But main comment is after 15 years and 12 reaerends I believe, what we discovered was if on a launch of it spin only one tire it.would destroy the.spider gears.
    I have a corvette rear that's been sitting on the shelf for probably 40 years now that we never did install.
    He added a supplement called Problend and never lost another rear. A lot of times it would pull the left front tire an inch on the launch and this was on the street.

    It's a beautiful car that's well past the project stage and means a lot to both of you. It deserves to be finished in a solid way so the problems are in the past not pushed down the road. Take the time and money needed to complete the car in a way it deserves.

    I remember buying a new 77 280Z in a light blue. Paid $7600 for a 4 speed and could not afford the extra $100 for the 5 speed, when they first came out. Great car ! Great 6 cylinder with fuel injection.

    You make me miss my 1979 240Z T-Top.it was all black, inside and out. I was laid off and running out of unemployment in 1995. It get us from starving and paid the rent until I found a job!!

    This brings back fond memories of fixing your half shafts broken down alongside the highway two years ago on Power Tour. 😉 As for upgrade, I’d definitely go 8.8” - talk to Hudlow Axle in Rossville, GA. Steve has many of them lying around to custom make into whatever you need. We’ll likely do the same thing ourselves. 👍🏻

      A mutual friend makes a swap for the Super 8.8" diff, that one doesn't have the races integrated into a cast housing that tend to fail.

    You should check out Team Boosted, they did an S15 conversion on the back of there Z. Its now running a Mercedes Turbo Diesel so loads of torque.

    What I did - which is a good upgrade without throwing out your work for coilover setup/wheel setup/axles, is throw in the OBX LSD off eBay for the 84-89 300zx. It swaps in great and easy and you can reuse your axles. You may just need to look your pinion gear/bearings to make sure they don’t need replaced or other stuff in the diff that’ll be reused.. They are about 450 on eBay. There is a shim kit you can get on the z forums for it too.

      Yes, this right here. Or if you want to spend a little more, swap in a quaife LSD. An 8.8 will be a lot of fabrication

    I would look for a Corvette rear end to do the upgrade. You might even just put in the center section and have the half shafts modified so you can keep your four lug wheels.

      That’s one way. The other is with an 8.8 swap. Easier (and cheaper) to find and several folks make kits for it.

      @@rickn8or A GM pumpkin isn't liable to be much larger than the stock rearend. I doubt the half shafts would be much shorter than what's there. You'd just need to go from the GM end to the Datsun parts.

    Bolt missing. That just means that you're human. If that's the worst thing that happened that day, you all are golden.
    I love that car. Not just because it's a small car with a strong motor and a beautiful injection system, it has fantastic shape, and I love the colors.

    You could always get custom axles for the 8.8 to keep the original hubs on the car if you didn't want to have to change the hubs and brakes.

    The bolts loose in the brake caliper reminds me of my first job as a novice car mechanic, I was called away a few times from a brake job that finally left the car with a brake caliper with the bolts hand tight. The next day the customer was back with a rattle.

    not being picky I hope but regarding punching your knuckles against bodywork when pushing the spanner or wrench, its best to do the opposite and pull it toward you, so when it 'gives' your arm muscles compress and act like a shock absorber and react much faster that way anyhow.....

    8.8 Ford IRS center section is in your near future...
    FYI According to Loctite, you are using WAY to much threadlocker. You should only be using 2 or 3 drops and put it approximately where the thread engagement will be after tightening. More is not better.

      @@flyingsparksgarage There are many factors that cause loctite to " fail". I've seen everything from heat/ cooled cycling, vibrations, other chemicals that come in contact with it ( as in the threads of the bolt OR the part you are inserting the bolt into being contaminated with something; I've even seen ambient temp have an affect on the application. Having said that, it did look like an excessive amount was being placed on the bolts - but I understand why. Has it really been that long since " Bob" had the car out? Time fly's...

    Rotate the oil container 180 and it will pour more smoothly. My ol' pappy taught me that.

    Just going to be like balancing throttle bodies on a motorbike. Just twice the number to do. It'll be a lot smoother when they've been done! What's the plan for filtration? Rebuild existing for the diff! Be a fun project anyway and better than just buying the way out of it although clearly a different diff would be a different load of work!! Good luck!!     For those loose bolts, try bolts with grip length. The threaded area isn't good in "bearing".
    The threaded section is slightly smaller and has more radial clearance that will allow more movement before it starts to react in shear. Plus the stretch per length of a threaded portion is more than the grip length.
    It may or may not help.

      It's hard to get bolts with a shank at that short a lenght.
      They'd have to buy longer bolts and shorten them.

      I would think that from the factory those parts should have had a couple of dowel pins so that it didn't rely on just the bolts to locate and carry the load. You might also try "Nordlock" lock washers instead of the old fashioned split type.

    Adding to the comment below. On the cv bolts. You need to find longer bolts that have the shank past the mating surfaces and cut off the extra thread. Threads are a stress riser waiting to shear. You could also drill for dowel pins and then the bolts would just be a clamping load.

    Had a 260z with a nice 327 and a 2000 stall and power glide. The original rear made it okay till we put the slicks on her and launched hard. half shafts got rebuilt with better parts. Diff was next. Did the 300z conversion. Held up okay for the next couple years. Great videos, keep em coming.

    So I was just reading about these rear-end swaps on Facebook. They were saying the popular swap everyone is doing now is take the rear diff from a SMART and throw it in there. Direct bolt in and good up to 800hp...hope it helps you out

    I had a gold 77 280Z. I had the same issues with bolts backing off. I used Nord washers along with loc-tite will keep the nuts from backing off. Never had a problem afterwards.

    Big sad on the glitter party and other issues but thanks for keeping it real. This car is gonna be great once sorted. Best thing I can tell you on the rear is to take your time and go with exactly what you want back there even if it involves waiting. Something bullet proof in the LSD flavor would be cool.

    I forgot to tighten the caliper bolts on my '00 Grand Cherokee! One bolt fell out and the caliper locked up the wheel when in reverse!
    Tighten the one remaining, and made it home!
    Things happen!

    I would upgrade the diff you have and even put in a LSD? if available. You don't run crazy power so keep it simple. Love Zen, what a motor.

    I try to never push a wrench. Whenever possible, I will pull it towards me. That way I try to avoid skinned knuckles. Something an old mechanic taught me back in the 80's...

      And keep your arm near fully extended so hand can't go flying. Even elbow locked stiff shoulder then turn with your upper torso, that way if it slips your torso isn't gonna jerk like your hand due to the extra mass.

    Change it for a modified 8.8. Use the pumpkin and center housing of the 8.8, with a posi center, add inner shaft side big brakes to help with stopping and cooling, from all the burnouts, and have short shafts made to go between the 8.8 and the stubs of Zen, so she can keep her original 4 bolt rims. Personally that is what I would probably do, but let Bob do Bob, and I'll keep watching and learning. Hope y'all have a great day. I am already looking forward to see what you decide to do.

    Pretty sure the 8.8 is a 5-lug. I had one on my last Jeep rockcrawler and it was amazing. Seems like you should be able to get adapters for the hubs.

    My assessment on the half shaft bolts is that they are "stretching " from the radial torque. As mention in another comment getting a bolt with threads at the ends and not fully threaded will minimize that and hopefully solve it. otherwise maybe a dowel pin to absorb the torque. As far as a swap what about a center off a late model Z , (350 ???) . Just some meandering thoughts. You got this.

    Great too see zen back up and moving again. That sounds great when you get on it. Also if I put a bolt in I will always tighten it. Otherwise leave it out. Just a habit I've made for myself.

    I know this is an old video, but if you want an upgrade for the rear diff and want to keep it Nissan look into the R230. It can be found in the Nissan Armada. You can get posi diffs, lockers, and gear sets for them!

    I think whether you rebuild what you've got or swap in an 8.8, it's something you haven't done on your channel and would be worth watching. I had a similar problem earlier this year with the Dana 30 in my Jeep. Glitter in the gear oil. I just went to my local U pull and found a front axle that didn't have that problem and put that in it.

    I would keep the same diff I will also install lockers so you can distribute power to both axis that's make it harder to pop ..

    Thanks for being a motivating force in the automotive industry I love watching your shows all of them so thanks keep up the good work you show that love is the best thing when you can work together and get a solid project done together so you give me the incentive to do work on my cars so thank you and about you 280 zen the rear end should be fixed but find out what the racers are using on there builds the 8.8 is good but a Ford 9” would be a stronger rear end but it may take more work to fit it In the car so I would say ask around to the other builder you no and get there input thanks for being a great influence to all

    I would pull the rear end out, disassemble it, and evaluate each of the parts. Then decide if a late 1970s diff design is appropriate for 360+ HP.

    I'd rebuild that rear end, though I'd look at getting different stub axles made (or search to find ones that could be swappped in) that allow you to get rid of the adapters that are causing too many issues.

    If parts are available I would rebuild the existing rear end so you can keep the IRS set up. Then when an 8.8 inch rear end in good shape becomes available for a decent price swap it in.

      You can get IRS 8.8" center sections. They came out of the newer thunderbirds if I'm not mistaken.

    I’d probably fix that one, just because I don’t hammer cars like I did as a youth and wouldn’t want to buy new wheels. If you are going to be more aggressive then the 8.8 would make sense since you’d end up doing it anyway.

    The 88, 89 300 Turbo had a R200 LSD that is a drop in fit. They are probably very hard to find now. I did that years ago and hammered the hell out of it with never a problem

    Em- it says nothing but good things that you were able to "think your way back in time" and see the moment when that brake work was done. It says even more good things that you possess the integrity and self respect to say so without prompting. NO wonder most of us see ya'll as nothing but awesome! Aaron; you wouldn't use "hardware store bolts" on an airplane- not really a good idea on any car but flirting with disaster on a modified one- you really aren't far from a couple of nut and bolt specialty houses- I'd make the acquaintance; what happens when a CV axle comes loose on the drive end wants seeing to believe- ask me how I know! FR

    "d do the swap to the stronger rear end. Do it once do it right. Buy once cry once as they say. Every time I've try to cheap out it seems to bite me. Love watching Zen getting some love finally. Used to have a 76 280 back in the day.

    I had a 240 Z,,I loved that car,,years ago,they had kits,it was called 240z28 kits,I was going to do the kit,but in 1979,,the tin worms got into it,,I couldn't stop it,,I sold it and bought a new Toyota land cruiser,,
    Damn I missed that car,,such is life,,I'll keep a eye out for what you do next,,

    Turn those quart oil jugs 180 degrees when you pour and it will eliminate the “chug” and make pouring without a funnel much easier.

    Love to see it back on the road, it deserves to be kept a independent rear though.
    Also you should bolt those ignition coils down to keep them from overheating, having ground issues and vibration damage, would hate to see it stranded once it get a new rear end.

    If it were mine I'd go with a C4 Corvette Rear End and maybe some hub adapters to go from 5 lugs down to 4? But if money were not an issue...have the stock reared rebuilt with beefier components? It would all have to be custom made of course. But either option would make for great channel content for the future.

    The “bolts” that you’re having trouble with in your half-shaft Cv joints look like 3/8 -16 socket head cap screws, and may have been over torqued in their past, thus stretched past their yield strength (yield point - stretched and won’t come back to original dimension, keep getting loose) and should be replaced.
    If you want to replace them with something stronger you may think about going to a fine thread socket head cap screw of 3/8-24, They are both Grade 8 as “Bob” stated. Don’t forget new grade 8 nuts. This would allow you a little more torque and holding power for your CV joints.
    If I’m all wrong about this and they were fine threads just throw them out and get new ones.

    I think the 8.8 will be the better way to go. The parts are more available, So if you are doing the drive and drag and break something you can get it fixed easily.

    Talk with Jon over at Mad Scientist garage. His friend Vlad (Invincible Muscle cars) makes an 8.8 kit. Would be worth the upgrade and I am sure mods can/have been made to retain the 4 bolt pattern.

      Yes we do. 34 spline super 8.8 btw... shares NO parts with an 8.8... Fun fact... NOBODY has broken our diff setup, and I have dozens of pictures of failures with the explorer 8.8, and r230 and r200 diffs from power levels my customers LAUGH at.

    I know swapping to the 8.8 involves a bit more "creativity" but given the limitations of the stock unit and the continuing reminders of that, I'd commit to the 8.8 rear. The axle flanges on the 8.8 can be re-drilled to a 4 bolt pattern to work with the wheels you have. Sure, at least one of the bolt holes from the 5 bolt pattern will most likely need to be fill-welded, but a competent machine shop can to that for you at the same time.

    If it were my car, I'd look into rebuilding with motorsports grade parts or a bolt in-ish swap. I'd also install a hydro-handbrake while I had the rear apart. You know, for maximum sideways!

    You've already thrown enough $$$ at her. You (or I'd) go the 8.8 and mini-spool if burnouts and line locks are your weakness. lol. I'd probably replace all bushings with Nolathane Suspension Bushings and not polyurethane. Personally, I've always appreciated the little extra give when wet weather driving. It's amazing how much that fraction of a difference in give that dampening saves keeping cornering smoother without compromising on handling for that overall (not so serious) fun drive. =D

    I'd put an LSD spec of the diff you've currently got and refresh the bushings.

    You might investigate swapping it with the same diff that's in Roxy. Getting the half shaft ends modified should be doable. Also, checkout Mighty Car Mods series on the update Moog and Marty did to a Z.

    Converting to a R230 is an option, and you guys get to keep the 4 lug wheels

      R230 has limited gearing options, especially if you want to keep an LSD. Better to go 8.8 aka Super 8.8. There's a guy on HybridZ building kits to mount them. 4Lug might be tough but it's a MUCH better setup with lots of parts availability.

    Do what you need to to keep it rolling for now but, 8.8 would make it bullet proof and you can have the axle drilled for you bolt pattern.

    If this was my car, I'd go for an R200 with a good LSD. I think you can even get a Detroit Locker for an R200, if you want to get that extreme. Quaife, Kaaz, OS Giken, are all options too. An R200 in good shape, especially if it has an LSD, will not be the weak link in a normally aspirated LS setup.
    Very cool project, BTW!
