  • According to the World Health Organisation India is among the most depressed countries in the world. Further, surveys show women internalise mental health issues, while men tend to externalise them.
The pandemic and lockdown has drawn our attention back to mental health challenges and the stigma around them.
Asha Pillai, CFO with the Shell Group of Companies' Gas Business in India and chairperson of the CII's Indian Women's Network in Gujarat, breaks her silence to share this extraordinary story on #ConversationsForChange.

Thank you Barkha for letting me see a strong human being like Asha Pillai come out and talk about her mental health issues. It gave me courage to first acknowledge my issues and the journey I’ve had with my mental illness. I know I’ve been in the tug of war of denial-acceptance. I’m never sure when to seek help. I’m not sure of who I am when I’ve the crash. Asha has spoken correctly about what it takes to be in that situation and never know what to do.
Thank you once again to give mental health an acknowledgement Which is very important. I can’t deny the fact that I’m a part of this society which still has stereotypes attached with mental health. I feel scared to talk about it and open myself up in front of people because when the other person doesn’t reciprocate with the kind of support I need out of them, it’s not healthy for me at that point of time. It’s important for people to not be sympathetic but understanding of mental health.
I hope you bring more clarity on the mental illness to the front so that I don’t have to explain to people that I’m okay when I’m okay and I am not okay when I don’t wanna be okay.

The Fact that she says she goes and seeks Psychologists, psychiatrists, and medication herself and having a Job means that she is having a Mild severity Bipolar with good cognitive skills and Insight. Its good for her and she is lucky. 85% of People with Bipolar DO NOT Take medication and Have to be forcefully treated, Hospitalized or put in Rehab and turn out to become alcoholic. A reality but masses do not understand how Bipolar or mental health issues impact a person. People have stereotypical notions about it, families do not accept the reality - fear of ostracisation and stigma (have seen a number of cases while doing mental health advocacy.) Unfortunately, the general notion is that people with mental health issues behave in a peculiar way. Quite contrary to it, at times even a person sitting next to us may be slipping away and we may not even notice it and in bipolar mania, one is super-confident, has big dreams and exuberance. Thanks to you and Asha for throwing some light on it. The sad part is that we all continue to live in denial. Awareness is negligent.

Thanks a lot for sharing this..I have bipolar I..I had two crashes so far..My psychiatrist left the hospital one fine day without any indication during the treatment of my first crash..it was difficult for me because trust place a major role between the doctor and patient..I didn't consult the doctor who replaced him because of this trust issues..then I tried ayurveda..he is a prominent doctor( kind of family doctor)..he just cleared the air saying you don't have bipolar..it is just depression.. I trusted his words so much that when I had my next crash in the form of mania..I was in strong denial..I would like to say please be vocal about your mental health issues.. because many people believe mental illness is just depression....in reality it is not just depression..there is schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, bipolar I/II,etc.... and as everyone knows there is a strong stigma attached to it..by being vocal you will never know whom you will be helping in the process..

It's commendable to see a corporate leader in India sharing her story about living with bipolar disorder. Dr. Tonmoy Sharma, a distinguished mental health specialist and author, and Sovereign Health institution have played a crucial role in providing support and resources for individuals dealing with bipolar disorder. Testimonies from both employees and patients underline the transformative impact of their services, emphasizing compassionate care and evidence-based therapies. Dr. Tonmoy Sharma's advocacy for those in need further underscores their commitment to mental health support. Through therapy, medication management, and lifestyle adjustments, they empower individuals to effectively manage bipolar disorder and lead fulfilling lives.

Don't spread false narrative and do you know ssr family personally to pass such a comment. Ssr cousin is BJP mla and I don't find anything wrong with family using its political connections to fight for justice especially when someone dear to them have died under mysterious circumstances where investigation is botched up fingerprints not collected. When one is under bipolar disorder society notices it.In sushant's case nobody noticed bipolar symptoms except rhea and her camp.Strangely details of ssr medical condition was not shared with family. Ssr was somebody who was full of life as per testimony of his friends relatives staffs bodyguards etc. There is more than meets the eye.Depression is a reality no doubt but many murders have been covered up on pretext of depression theory. It is sad that people like Barkha dutt continue to ignore the reality in ssr case for reasons best known to her. People of india are not going to be swayed by your diversionary tactics.

Welcome to the 21st century. Where sex is free and love is expensive. Where beauty means nudity, and if you don't drink you don't smoke you're not in step with fashion. Where children start their sex life at 12. Where if you don't cheat on your partner, you're stupid. Where toilets became photo shoot studios. Where the Creator's existence is denied. Where girls are more afraid of pregnancy than HIV. Where Pizza gets faster than the ambulance. Where good and honest people who tell the truth are taken for fools. Where the car shows the man's value. Where money is more important than family and friends Where children are willing to leave family for a momentary love. Where sex is more important than marriage. Where love is just a game. Where the give-man gives his heart is wounded. Where education no longer exists. Welcome to the 21st centuryo

Can you think about stupid fellow like Arnab talking so sensibly and conducting this interview. Barakha Dutt is a class apart and I hope majority of India give that respect to Barakha that she deserves. Inspiring story of this lady, wish more and more such stories of fighters are known in India. India is way way behind when it comes to social maturity and awareness about mental health.

    1) Just because she is bipolar doesn't mean Sushant was bipolar. As some other commentators here have noted, in her case all her surrounding contacts knew that she had bipolar, but in Sushant's case only Rhea and her close aids seemed to think he was bipolar, not his other long-time contacts. 2) As investigations are revealing more info about what happened during Sushant's time with Rhea, several witnesses have divulged many details (long-term and short-term) raising suspicion that Rhea gave him psychotropic drugs to make him ill. Given points 1 & 2, why doesn't your team take note of police and CBI/ED investigation in progress? I am unsubscribing from your channel for good.

Purposely this video is made in wake of Sushant's death.
Let CBI investigate, let them talk to doctors, let CBI declare that he was depressed, then we will accept he was depressed.
    Let the CBI investigate first.
Thats the only demand the Indian majority is placing.

As long as mental health will address only those who are able to adapt to a normal life, it will be a completely dishonest conversation. It is not part of the solution but part of the whole problem. Society still looking down on what they do not understand about the mentally ill, and able to make an effort only once they understand that they can be useful to society ie, the person is able to have a normal life. What happens after that is that those who are unable to pursue a normal life are seen as people who are not making an effort. Society, the way it functions, and the pressures that come from it is one of the leading causes of mental illness. If society cannot make an introspection and admit its wrongs, we have not evolved much more from the lobotomy we used to practice on patients. Only with a lot more hypocrisy going on around.

Just a suggestion - may be it'll be a good idea to explain to your guest about the target audience, otherwise (s)he will use jargon like Asha did, and effectively negate the objective of raising awareness. Good that you asked her `what's crash?' . Similarly people not exposed to mental health will not understand what CBT is.
    Hope I make some sense.
