    Thanks Brian! Again, another excellent summary.
    Timestamps:
    1. Efficient Brains - Our brains will optimize every process/behavior to make them more efficient (like algorithms); thus, it creates habits, to run processes in 'automatic pilot', so we don't have to think about them - 0:55
    2. Cue + Routine + Rewards - Old habits CANNOT be deleted, but modified by others more beneficial to us. Cue: facilitate getting started with your tasks by setting/preparing your environment, create a cue that incites you, and makes it easier to get started. Routine: The cycle that runs your habits. Create a process that marks 'very specifically' the tasks/steps you have to do to achieve your goals. Rewards: choose something that you like and can have ONLY after finishing with your tasks. Also, assign a positive feeling to the act of finishing your task. Also, by identifying the cues that lead you to procrastinate, will help you to avoid/change them so they don't trigger a behavior you want to get rid of. Give it enough time, so that you get 'addicted' to it. - 1:54
    3. Keystone Habits - Identify what's the 'key' habit that strengthens other habits. For instance, what thing/action/behavior will definitely improve/change your life? Exercising, sleeping, meditation, change in nutrition, reading, studying. - 4:37
    4. Exercise + Willpower - Combining physical exercise (physiological positive results) with commitment/determination/discipline (willpower equates or might surpass IQ - similar concept posed in 'Grit', Angela Duckworth's book) - 6:06
    5. Believe! - Willpower and habits CAN be changed/modified. Aligned with 'Mindset', Carol Dweck's book) - 7:41

    I love these summaries! I would really like to share them with my community.... but as most of my community are Deaf, I only share videos with good quality captions. Unfortunately auto-generated ones are often misleading and confusing.... speech-to-text software still has a long way to go. It's actually really easy to edit the captions in video manager (even I can do it, and I'm not tech-savvy at all!). I would love to see these awesome videos made accessible!

    Hi Brian :) I've read this book 2 months ago, it's really awesome. This episode as always rocked! Once a day on my break time (cue) I watch one PN episode (routine) and get more wisdom in less time (reward) ;) I loved the GTD class today and I look forward to see the script of it when possible. I remember you saying that you're gonna do it :) I appreciate your effort and feedbacks. Have a great night and see ya.

    I need to realign some of my habits, and so does my daughter - this will help! I subscribed right away - love your style. (BTW, I fly all over the planet consulting, teaching, and speaking, so many people think I have it wired, but with better habits I could do so much more, and worry so much less.)

    *I am your constant companion.*
    *I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden.*
    *I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.*
    *I am completely at your command.*
    *Half of the things you do you might as well turn over to me and I will do them - quickly and correctly.*
    *I am easily managed - you must be firm with me.*
    *Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons, I will do it automatically.*
    *I am the servant of great people, and alas, of all failures as well.*
    *Those who are great, I have made great.*
    *Those who are failures, I have made failures.*
    *I am not a machine though I work with the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a person.*
    *You may run me for profit or run me for ruin - it makes no difference to me.*
    *Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet.*
    *Be easy with me and I will destroy you.*
    *Who am I? I am Habit.*

    Hi Brian - thx - you may have covered this elsewhere - but what if the keystone habit is something to quit, rather than take on?

    • @HeroicBrian
      @HeroicBrian  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ravi Srinivasan Replace it with a NEW keystone!! I like to come back to these questions often: "What's the #1 thing I can start doing that will have the most benefit in my life?" AND, "What's the #1 thing I need to stop doing?!" Yah?!

    I had a hard time even powering through this book. Way too much fluff and stories, and it was hard to find the practical stuff. I finally had to give up and just come here and watch Brian's summary.
    Thanks, Brian!! :)

    • @rtoomer92
      @rtoomer92 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They provided multiple stories to increase the chance of the reader having a commonality to further understand the concept behind the process of habits

  • @brunomuller5690
    @brunomuller5690 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What would be a good habit loop to get yourself to really crave for studying? I really have this problem in my studies(engineering) that the subjects I'm learning are really complex and I really have to put a lot of time into learning and understanding them. Every achievement requires a lot of work and they do not occur very often.
    So how can I really create a habit loop for studying when it is really exhausting, because I don't really have a good idea and when it comes to habits people mostly mention eating healthy or working out for examples.
    By the way this video was amazing!

    Excellent Book analysis Brian Sir, you have very productively explained the in an efficient manner. For more such efficient guidance i have subscribed your channel as well :D
    Thank You for that
    But please help me, you talked of keystone habit, for me it is waking up early, i am little confused as to what should be set as a cue
    I would be very grateful to you if you can please help me With that :)

      +Nishit Mitra Thanks, Nishit! I would make your cue to wake up early something tied to the NIGHT BEFORE. For me, it's turning all electronics off when the sun goes down! :) Other recommend setting an alarm not for when you want to get up but for when you want to wind down!
