This book is a gem; one of the only books to recognize that procrastination comes, not from laziness, but from anxiety. After reading it, I hired the author to help coach me in gaining admission to medical school at age 35. Highly recommended, and an excellent summary here. Philosopher's Notes are one of the best things to come along in a long time - a genius idea. There's no one who couldn't benefit from them - it's like having a "personal shopper" choose quality ideas that "fit." Bravo.

To conquer procrastination, separate your worth from your work. Be
safe with yourself, regardless of criticism. Select ”I choose to start,”
    not “I have to finish.”

Regarding one of your points: For the last 18 years I've been keeping a Daily Sheet on a clipboard, and carry it with me. There I add my calendared list, log my activities every hour; expenses, workouts, food and water and how I feel afterward, mileage, conversations and phone calls, etc... At the end of the day I go through it and transfer the info to my spreadsheets. It works as a diary of all things. What is fun is I can look at every day for the last 18 years, and a few notations that were made trigger my memory of the entire day. It also is perfect for legal reasons. Like, "Nope, Sir. We met on this day and this hour and we did make this decision. It's right here." ..... Brian, you truly have one of the best channels. But boy is it hard to change my default settings.

Hi, This is a bit of a long message about a problem I have and I will really appreciate if you guys can help in any way, and it will also help other people reading it.
So I am studying music in my high-school and I get homework , and my passion to music and playing the piano are diminishing. It is really frustrating to me because I know I want to pursue something that has to do with music later on, but I just keep having resentment and resistance to it caused by the pain I associate to playing the piano. It is super hard for me to get on the piano and learn and play (especially practicing for my big test). I study with a class of teens with whom I feel anxious around, and I feel the need to be accepted. I am sure this has an effect on my procrastination, as well as the fear of failure, imperfection, overwhelm. It is really hard for me to "choose" to do it because I've already put myself to it and I'm starting to feel like a victim that has "have to's". But the thing that causes me the most pain is when I hear them talking about how they are playing and practicing. This is serious pain for me, especially when the other pianists (we are 3 in all) are saying that and don't seem to have the burden of pain and resistance to it. Every time people talk about playing music I try to avoid the conversation because it just brings up all the unwanted feelings of unworthy. Time goes by and I feel like I'm getting stuck behind while everyone is going forward. This is scary as hell for me, plus I suffer from social anxiety, so I'm living in a vicious cycle. If you read up until here then I totally appreciate you for your time, and if you have any advice then please share. It really will mean a lot to me

Thanks for sharing. I feel like this all the time, especially as it relates to musical instruments, but also with Golf. Both of these are vastly different activities but very similar in that being bad at them is SUPER obvious to everyone around you. It’s really hard as a perfectionist to deal with how bad we sound on an instrument the first time we try play something. Or even that feeling of missing just one note.
There are ways of getting around this, but a big part of it for me was two things.
      1. Get comfortable with being bad at stuff. It’s the only way to get better at anything. With music it can be tough because being bad can just sound and feel terrible to you and everyone who has the misfortune of being around while you’re practicing. But remember, it’s just practice, it’s not supposed to sound good, but eventually even your practices will start to sound good.
      2. Process - learn to fall in love with the process instead of the end result. Most of the really good stuff happens between starting out and getting good at something. Within that struggle you’ll figure something out that can be helpful later or even translate into other areas of your life.
      3. Something instead of nothing. This is the easiest and probably the most beneficial. As Brian mentioned in the video, figure out the minimal thing you can do, and do it. If all you do is run through tuning, a couple scales, whatever. If you feel like playing some more (you likely will) then keep playing. If not, then don’t and pick it back up tomorrow.
Bonus round - since this is music related, I would also say that you can jump start your practice sessions by doing a quick warm up and then playing your favorite song you already know how to play. This can jumpstart your session just by convincing yourself to sit down and do something you already know how to do and enjoy. For weight training, this could be jumping to your favorite exercise no matter how superficial it is or for Golf this could be effortless chipping and putting.
Whatever creates the least resistance to getting started is key for us perfectionists that like to have an entire plan laid out in front of us and the perfect everything, it helps just to get out of our own heads.
      Good luck to you.
