    The newest video in my editor reacts to series. This week I'm watching and reacting to Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time.
    After being bested in a fight by an ordinary vampire, Buffy asks Spike to explain how he killed two Slayers many years earlier.

    A young woman, destined to slay vampires, demons and other infernal creatures, deals with her life fighting evil, with the help of her friends.
    Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an American supernatural drama television series based on the 1992 film of the same name. It was created by Joss Whedon under his production tag, Mutant Enemy Productions, with later co-executive producers being Jane Espenson, David Fury, David Greenwalt, Doug Petrie, Marti Noxon, and David Solomon.
    The series narrative follows Buffy Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar), the latest in a line of young women known as "Vampire Slayers", or simply "Slayers". In the story, Slayers, or the "Chosen Ones", are chosen by fate to battle against vampires, demons and other forces of darkness. Buffy wants to live a normal life, but as the series progresses, she learns to embrace her destiny. Like previous Slayers, Buffy is aided by a Watcher, who guides, teaches and trains her. Unlike her predecessors, Buffy surrounds herself with a circle of loyal friends who become known as the "Scooby Gang" - a reference to the animated franchise Scooby-Doo that features a group of friends solving mysteries together.

      The amazing thing about Spike is that he is able to get to any level of compassion or love for someone else without actually having a soul. Was he such a good person when he was alive that some of that is left over, like muscle memory, in a way it doesn't for any other vamp we've seen on the show?

    • @jemal999
      @jemal999 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@itsonlysound This and some of the later episodes of angel showcase the fact that Vampires are still heavily influenced by who they were. (very Minor and vague spoilers ahead). A vampire is essentially a human who's soul has been replaced by an evil demon.
      All of the 'vamp group' (darla/dru/angel/spike) have something about them that makes them kinda unique.
      Darla had a hard life and it made her a hard person, but she was a strong, powerful woman in a time when that was very rare, and being sired by the Master just made her embrace it even more fully.
      Angel was a spoiled brat 'alpha male' who never got daddy's approval. When he lost his soul, he embraced the worst parts of his toxic masculinity and became the Alpha Vampire. When he got his soul back, it was the equivalent of someone hitting rock bottom and looking back at how horrible they were, and deciding to try to be better.. But he still has that darkness inside him, and his entire story arc is one of redemption and constantly TRYING to be better. (And there are several notable times when he fails).
      Dru is.. well, she's crazy and psychic.
      And then there's Spike, who even as a Soulless vampire is still capable of compassion b/c when he was alive he was a kind, emotional person.. but he is currently inhabited by EVIL, which is how he can enjoy hurting, murdering, etc. It's also what makes him so Insightful. Most vampires don't see things the way he does. It's what makes him special, and one of the many reasons I think he's the most interesting vampire characters (in any media, not just the buffyverse).
      Also, lets remember that even with a soul, there are humans in both series (and unfortunately real life) who do far worse things than Spike has Ever done, despite him being considered one of the worst vampires in history.
      There's Also another scene in S6 E19 where Spike does something HORRIBLE, but feels instantly bad about it despite being an 'evil soulless monster' which further points to how good of a person he used to be, that even without his soul, he can be ashamed by his actions, and he then tries to change.

    One of the things that often gets overlooked is that Buffy is different from other slayers *because she has friends and family.* Most slayers are totally solitary, they keep their identities a secret, and they don't form personal connections to anyone but their watchers. So most slayers die young, they can burn out quickly and get tired of fighting night after night, they have no one to lean on and are dealing out death every day, and it makes sense that they would eventually give up and stop fighting so hard.
    Something Joyce said back in Gingerbread always stuck with me... the slayer keeps fighting and fighting but does that stop the demons? Do things ever really get better? Probably at some point they start to feel totally hopeless about it, and they have nothing personal to fight for, and they just get tired enough to WANT to stop and that's when the vampire gets them.
    But Buffy... she's got backup, she has friends, love, her mom and now a sister, a life other than slaying, and those are the things she has to fight for. As long as she has those things, she's less susceptible to the hopelessness that comes over other slayers.

      Lmao what? It never gets overlooked. It’s not even subtextual, it’s textual. It’s literally what Spike says at the end of his lesson. It's a word that was more commonly used in the 19th century and was at its lowest point around 1990. It's been trending up ever since.
    This is such a perfect character study episode. This is what Lost (and way too many other shows) tried and failed to emulate. On Buffy and Angel, flashbacks are fairly rare, so they're more effective when they do use them. What we learn about Spike has massive implications of who he is and why, while other shows treat their flashbacks like foreshadowing setup to something else that doesn't really matter in the long run, backstory that doesn't serve the characters' frontstory.

    SPOILERS FOR THE FIREFLY COMIC _THE SHEPHERD'S TALE_
    One of my favorites from the whole of the Buffyverse. I haven't gotten this far on my lists, but I would probably rank this as my sixth favorite episode/story. Perhaps seventh. It's fighting with the _Angel_ S2 episode _Are You Now or Have You Ever Been._
    I love that Lexi makes the connection between the demon here and the chaos demon Spike mentions in S3. Not many first time viewers do, at least that I can remember.
    The progression of William to Spike is such a fascinating story. In some ways the layout for this episode is done in the same way as they eventually did with _The Shepherd's Tale._ Only in _The Shepherd's Tale,_ the flashbacks move in reverse chronological order down to Shepherd Derrial Book's childhood.
    Slow motion walking scenes go back to the 1983 movie _The Right Stuff._
    Buffy being disturbed over Spike having Sex after killing a slayer is amusing considering how many fans I've seen do the same thing at her and Riley's _The I in Team_ sex scene after killing the Polgara demon. And the fact that Spike is right. That moment did make her get an HH factor, just as Faith said.

    The period from Buffy 4x15 to Angel 2x7 has the highest density of amazing episodes in the whole Buffyverse: Faith, Tara, Oz, Spike, Xander, Dawn, Wesley... all of them get close looks at their characters in this particular phase. But don't worry, there are a lot of super episodes and arcs left.😊
    If you wanna know who copied Spike, have a look on Billy Idol 😉.
    Spike gets the eyebrow scar from his first and his coat from his second slayer. His kind of trophys.

    I think slayers eventually get cocky with their slaying which leads to their death which of course almost happened to Buffy.

  • @spaceshiplewis
    @spaceshiplewis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    To have a Death Wish means that you are on a destructive path that will only lead to your death. She's not wishing for death.
    Slayers can die at anytime. They are on a battlefield, a one woman army. But one poor move, one unlucky coincidence, one too powerful vampire and a Slayer is dead. Slayers can come back from a whole lot of damage but they are still mortal. Buffy is lucky in a way because she doesn't train a whole lot. That Chinese Slayer probably trained everyday (Kendra did too).
    When you are finally done with Buffy the TV show there are comics that have more Spike and Dru backstory.

    He said that because he's mad at himself and took it out on her.
    He's angry at himself because he's in love with you. Like truly in love.
    You know that saying...You always hurt the ones you love.
    It rings very true.
    Angel hurt Buffy because he loves her.
    Spie hurts her because he loves her.
    However, her hurting Riley? Part of it is from love and part is the fact she can't get over Angel.

    I would seriously rate Fool For Love as a Top 5 episode from the whole Season, it is an exceptional episode, this why S5 is by far the best season. The flashbacks are superb we can see where William/Spike is the way he is. He has been treated appallingly by women through the ages Cecily/Drusilla/Buffy. He was a gentle person as a human as opposed to Liam/Angel was an awful human. The scene in The Boxer Rebellion where Drusilla, Darla, Angel and Spike are walking away from the fire and Spike jumps in the air is one of the most iconic ever. This scene is exactly replicated in Angel episode called 'Darla' S2 E7 for those watching the watchlist of both shows in order. The fight on the train too with Spike in 70s where he steals the slayer's coat was brilliant. Buffy repeats Cecily's words 'you're beneath me' there is just so much foreshadowing in this episode it's amazing. A truly brilliant episode in S5 without doubt the best season, Fool For Love is definitely in top 5 episodes of whole series. It is right to say this is best episode so far in S5 up to here, but incredibly there are two more in this Season that even better than this! S5 blows all the others away. Incredible writing!

    I've never liked the scene with the Scoobies patrolling with Riley; it seems so forced. Like, Riley's been with this group for months now; he's been out of the military for a good while too. This can't be the first time he's gone patrolling with them; and he's not that dumb to think they would know his hand gestures.
    And then on the flip side we have Willow, Xander and Anya walking around like they've never been on patrol before. You think they were just hanging out or having a picnic.

    • @alicequinn505
      @alicequinn505 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's more that it's life for them, they grew up in Sunnydale, it's second nature and no big deal. For Riley it's a cool job where he gets to be the expert and show off, sometimes to people who don't understand what he's doing. I think both of them are used to patrolling with Buffy.

    19:45 You may feel a bit less sad for him when you consider he got the name Spike from torturing people to death with railway spikes. My guess is that the people at that party were the ones he did that to. William the human you may feel sorry for but Spike the vampire is an absolute monster. Even Angel said so.

    • @alicequinn505
      @alicequinn505 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Under vampire morals, they deserved it. Feel less sorry for human Spike than vampire Spike, though, at least in this specific situation.

    • @moonystic9417
      @moonystic9417 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes and no. But mostly no. Spike mostly killed people who hurt him/his feelings (crime of passion), slayers (his "duty" as a vampire), and happy meals on legs (food). He was never about torture or mental games for the sake of it.
      Angel said a lot of stuff that weren't true at all. For example, he said he never fed off humans since he got his soul. He also said soulless vampires don't have any humanity.
      In reality, the writers haven't established those details yet. In the show, Angel could have been projecting his own absolute monster or straight up lying to save face. Up to your interpterion.
      Either way, Angel did BS from time to time, there's no reason to assume he wasn't about someone he hated also, exaggerating, or telling half-truths.
      (spoilers for Buffy S7 and Angel S5)
      As Spike pointed out, and as proven as the truth in flashbacks, Angel is the one who turned him into a monster. I'll remind you that the first thing Spike did after Drusilla sired him was sire his own mother because he wanted to save her the pain and dying. He actually started out as very humane until Angel took him under his wing almost like a big brother.
      The railway road spikes Spike you're describing is the same Spike Lexi is feeling sad for. Because he's always had William in him. He's always had a lot of humanity left in him. Even as the monster Angel turned him into he was capable of feeling and expressing human emotions. That's why Lexi feels for him.

    Riley went back alone because he is on a destructive "I need to be the hero" / "thrill seeker" path. I choose to see it as him going down a path of self harm by his unconscious trying to cope with him being sexually abused in Who Are You.
    Regarding extras like Tara not being in every episode I wonder if that comes down to each episode only being sold to The WB for $1M per episode (so the budget was smaller than that to provide a profit for Fox) when modern shows can have budgets 10x and even 100x that. Even the old (TOS) of Star Trek cost more per episode ($1.5M) to make than Buffy.

    • @ernesthakey3396
      @ernesthakey3396 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It was a retcon, from the one time Spike said "you were my sire, man, my Yoda!" - and they expanded "sire" to also include grandsire, great-grandsire, etc. So the Master sired the entire line.

      it was never literal. yoda wasn't anyone's actual father, but he was luke's father figure. likewise, angel was a sire figure, given that drusilla was too insane to really train a new vampire.
