I, unfortunately, suffer the same affliction. So many hours wasted while I could have been surfing the internet. Oh well, guess will just have to grin and bear my burden…
We didn’t even have computers when I graduated college. Internet? We were forced into this affliction on rainy days when we weren’t forced to go outside into the woods until dinner and chased each other around with sharpened sticks like feral boys on a deserted island. Wait, I think I read about that?
Oh gosh. I love your dead-pan delivery, and this whole dang vlog. "Forced to read," the eye rolls, the sighs. "I discovered something called 'Music.'" You need to be a comedian. We need a tongue-in-cheek emoji. Tip Top and so well done. 😉
In Texas, where I live, Bradbury's Fahrenheit novel is required reading in many high schools. Rarely have I met a kid who was inspired by it. Instead, I get bafflement, because why would anyone want to risk their life for a book? And why would anyone subject themselves to memorizing any book? However, when that same kid is given a short story from The Martian Chronicles or The Illustrated Man, you hear, " I want more stories like this!" Now those inspire kids on the fence to become readers. Good choices all around.
I can understand why teenagers would think that, but it wouldn't be hard for them to see what's really at stake there. Agree that The Illustrated Man is another great one, it was hard for me to choose between the two for this video. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Greg at Anotherbibliophile Reads just did a response video to yours. I don't know how I missed this when you first posted. Just brilliant. Simply brilliant. Thanks for this video.
Thank you for recommending James Baldwin! I picked up 'If Beale Street Could Talk' today, and I'm 3/4 finished. Incredibly good prose, and he really gets one into the minds of his characters. Thanks again! I'll check out more.
Thank you for being so open and letting others learn from your experience. 🤣 I do love your deadpan delivery; you almost had me going at the beginning there... This is a great list - I have not read Carson McCullers, so I've added that one to my wish list! I'm a lifelong reader, too, and while I don't recall a specific turning point, for me it was authors like Judy Blume, Roald Dahl, and Dr. Seuss that got me started.
Interesting video! I have read Lord of the Flies and Farewell to Arms I really enjoyed both of those books. Moby Dick, Jane Eyre, Dune, Lonesome Dove and Crime and Punishment are very dangerous as well. They will enter your brain and never leave if you ever read them.
I think I read Lord of the Flies when I was a teenager. I found it and read it on my own. I still clearly remember the story. Around the same time I read Animal Farm. Similar themes and allegories.
I could assume that some people might miss your point unless they stay to the end. It was presented so well. Green Eggs and Ham might be dangerous. Kids may beg for same.
Great video! Also, each native English speaker should learn by you how to speak English in a globalized audience set ( pronouncing and separating neatly each part of the phrase in a not too fast pace!) This form of speaking show your brilliant intelligence to catch the necessity to "internationalizing" your language, making it understandable to everybody in the world. I'm Italian. Thank You and Greetings!
@@pleasereadyourbook I guess it’s a cultural thing, but while I was in Russian school as a 14 year old kid, we had to read “Crime and punishment” by Dostoevsky. Read that and let me know what you think;)
@@pleasereadyourbook really? I’m sorry then. I was listening while working, without watching the video. Maybe I didn’t catch the joke, so I must apologize. I thought you were serious. Yes read all Hemingway. Love his writing and his topics. Fiesta and the book of short stories A moveable feast I have read multiple times. Best wishes and happy reading.
Your title caught me off guard! My initial (brief) thought was, "Oh no! He's jumped on the bandwagon for the political party that bans books!" I am glad to see I was mistaken 🙂 Great line up of books, though I have not read "Going to Meet the Man." Thanks for sharing your thoughts & humor!
This video is a JOKE! I'm a very sarcastic person with a very dry delivery. Please don't take this seriously!
Good

Glad you enjoyed my cautionary tale.
I have said for many years that 1984 and Animal Farm should both be required reading in schools.
I was lucky enough to have been forced to read Animal Farm in school. Another forced reading!
They would be if school was actually meant to be educational.
This is one of the best videos I have seen on Booktube. Well done.
That's a pretty tall compliment for a joke video, but thanks, lol.
As a lady with Victorian sensibilities, literacy should not be for me. I should be in bed, looking at my wallpaper!
Lol!

p.s. A good companion to Lord of the Flies is Ballard's High-Rise.

Yes, High-Rise and Super Cannes swim in the same deep waters.

All books are carefully screened by their publishers.
They don't like it, it doesn't get published.
Indeed.
"I am a man why would I read fiction?" Haha
An important question, lol.
Yes, that bit was good. Also, "Written by a WOMAN?"

Great idea for a video and a great list. "In case you couldn't tell, I was being sarcastic"--Homer
You’re right, that was a little Homer-esque wasn’t it.
Careful! Keep those tomes at arms length. I have learned to keep books in s separate room, well away from me. Dangerous things.
You are wise to keep your distance.
The book that absolutely must not be read is 1984.
Indeed!
My favourite Ray Bradbury was The Illustrated Man, especially the chapter set on the rainy planet
That's another great Bradbury title, I mean another very dangerous one...

Yes, Dr Seuss books are highly addictive!
BAN THEM ALL!!! 😡👊
