    At 8:04 the center cymbal on the 50 just below the back hash had his cymbal shatter. You can see it flash as the broken piece went flying in front of him. The corps stayed at Upper Dublin HS that year. That cymbal was given to the band director as a thank you. That cymbal hung in the band room until the mid 90's when he retired. What great piece of drum corp history!

    Drum Corps at its finest! Those were best days of the activity. Louder, faster, higher.

    First drum corps show I ever saw. I played percussion in a Big 10 style high school marching band and the Madison uniforms alone made me a fan for life.

    I wish this video would have captured the way the horn line did a “ripple” effect about face before they started their off the line (opener for new schoolers). This was my first time seeing DCI final, as this was my rookie year, marching in a Class A (what is now known as Open class) corps, and was totally blown away by Madison that night. They are part of the reason why I still follow Drum Corps in my 60’s.

    Please! Someone, somewhere bring back this powerhouse type of show! Enough of Broadway on turf! Let’s see a corp come out like it’s the 1970’s or 80’s. And this show? It ranks as an all-time great!

    Bringing back old memories from when just before I was active in drums across the Rockies . I distinctly remember the show.

    I started in 1978. We still had the single piston and rotary valve bugles like in this video. It was a very different feeling and you played it differently.

    Smh. I have to smile a bit. Garfield went thru many imcarnations of West Side Story, taking "Maria" as their signiture piece in the 60s - several times. It surfaced again in the 70s & here it is in the 80s - again, apparently, several times. In fact those of us who had the original records probably recognize the buts & pieces of those original arrangements that pop up here w/all the new trailing emblishments. Yes, when you listen, it's still the old faithful "Maria" from NJ. It waa only just niw tgat tge realization hit me: When they run out of ideas, Garfield had a tendency to fall back on the tried & true - & lets face it: somebody's desire to take comfort in those old charts that they wrote after they had aged out in the 60s. Or learned listening to their brothet or their dad back in the 8:49 60s. Or learned fir themselves when they went touring un the 60s. Or 70s. Or whatever incarnation grabbed them. We get "Glitter & BeGay", too, & all the overture curliques from the opening if "Candide"; but fir some reason somebidy just had to haul out WSS & plug "Maria" into this mix. It's an old redoubtable East Coast NJ trick of the trade. Gotta fill up the 13 mins.

    I marched in the Belleville Black Knights in 1975. Watched finals :(
    from the 50 by the press box (thank you Terry). I know this show and this music and still love watching this performance. Anybody know the name of the soprano soloist? Well deserved win Madison Scouts.

      I agree with you 100%. This is back when we still had real drunk and beautiful c o r p s . Today July 16th, 2024, the activity thanks to DCI has turned it into a marching band competition, superimposed on a three-ring circus😂😂😂

      That was the Timing and Penalties judge alerting the execution Judges to leave the field at the 11:30 mark (only GE judges adjudicated until the end of the show back then). It used to be a part of every show. Long gone.

      @@tomshea8382 Thank you. I wondered that because to me, directly after the shot, the music changed, and it seemed awkward to me.

    now this is what the World War 2 veterans and World War 1 veterans envisioned drum corps to be for genertions to come, honoring the Flag, tympani players "marching", bells players "marching"...etc..etc...not the total nonsense that is going on now? it's breaking the hearts of many people around the country that the nations number #1 youth activity has ended up being an activity all about the show designers and so-forth. there used to be 16,000+ drum and bugle corps in the U.S, now there is probably only a 100 at most as far as I know??? very sad :(

    • @johns3106
      @johns3106 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What we all forget (I love this era of drum corps too!) is that one of the problems the modern activity has to deal with is…the “heyday” in the ‘60’s, ‘70’s and even into the ‘80’s, we still had ALL those baby-boomer kids to pull from…OF COURSE there were many corps, because the were lots of kids. Today, participation is down in all kinds of youth activities; band, drum corps, scouts, Little League etc. As much as I dislike modern drum corps, we can’t blame all its low participation levels on the modern “style”.

      @@johns3106 from Steve Vickers history book ( A history of drum and bugle corps in the united states ) "DCI made it financially impossible for small market corps to exist". the forming of DCi was the beginning of the downfall of drum corps in the U.S.

      Drum Corps was ment to evolve. There's no way it could've survived like this. While this is one of my favorite shows, it wouldn't have been able to stay like this and succeed. It may be sad to some, but Drum Corps today has changed many lives.

      It took DCI 50 years to kill off real drum corps.
