7 year-old me, when watching this at the Manning Bowl in Lynn, Massachusetts, thought this was the greatest thing I had ever seen.
And now, 56 year-old me - still thinks it is one of the greatest things I have ever seen and heard!

I was there... I cried big tears... I wondered if anyone has film of The Year of the Royal Commodores... The Stockton Commodores and the San Leandro Royaires...
I still miss marching and instructing..
My sister is still involved and I taught her and she kept moving on up until she was in the Big BD and after aging out she taught and is still going strong.... Many friends have come and gone on throughout the years with Blue Devils and other Corps... Winterguard was Awesome as well... What a life...
    What a life... I

That salute STILL brings a lump to the throat, almost 50 years later!

I love today’s shows, but I also miss the days when color guard drills actually showed off how in sync each member was.
That rifle line coming through like an arrow at the end … yes, they were just spins, but they were LOCKED.

I was a rifle captain at my high school back in 1982. The 27th Lancer color guard was a HUGE inspiration to me. Yes, the routine back in the day we're basic compared to today's standard but they were very visual and effective!!

I couldn’t agree more! Todays drills are innovative and dramatic, but those from years ago were MUCH more difficult to execute. The military influence is all but gone. I miss that!

It's fascinating to hear a full battery cadence going out; I don't think I've heard a drum corps do that before or since.

      Really?
Every group did this back in the 60's/70's... 😅

@@cicook7 Alas, all of the DVDs I have of corps from the 70s cut out the exit cadence portion except for 1975 27th Lancers.

@micahthedrumcorpspseudoboo7250 even as late at the early 2000's corps would "troop" the stands and play their cadence off the field.

@@cicook7 Sadly, none of my early 2000s DVDs show any of that, not even the 2003 Division II/III DVD I have.

Real kettle drums and if you're somebody out there saying that those are marching timpani drums go back to the 6th grade

Crowds were so much bigger back then.

The crowd was not bigger they just was able to sit on all sides of the stadium.

    • @cicook7

I think finals typically tipped 30k in attendance... that's more than today.

    • @cicook7
      @cicook7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@cocamojack7793 while you are right, they were able to sit on the back side (corps membership only), crowds were much larger back then because the activity was larger back then. DCI's used to have over 120 groups competing in 3 divisions.
How do we get there again?
I think more local circuits with more local competition to give smaller and developing groups a chance, while easing costs on the larger ones.
methodical focus shows or *Regionals* for corps in certain areas before all cumulating at the world championships.
keeps costs down and allows more people to see groups in their own area.
we kinda need to go back in time to realise what made it larger than, what it is now.

This is true but the way back to it is to open a College section of the competition. Just the first month start with the top twenty

@@cocamojack7793or move the age-out to 23 to correspond more closely to college graduation.
