Anybody else wish these two fools would stop arguing over nonsense and get to the reason everyone came here? Does the thing work or not?
They act like they're doing a radio show instead of testing the device.

It's nothing like airplay -_- Google aren't reallyyyy trying to sell you stuff either, you don't see any Google services pop up unless you're already using them, so they're not pushing their content in your face.
Stop bringing up comparisons to Apple! lol. Really off putting when reviewers keep bring up a specific companies products whenever they can.

I have a 2nd Gen Apple TV now and just about never use it due to performance issues. It's set up on WiFi and every time we try to watch Netflix, it starts but then the screen blacks out intermittently while the movie keeps on playing. Forums say it can be fixed by hard wiring the Apple TV unit, but that's not an option in the living room. Other fixes says to check for WiFi interference from neighbors - checked and we are on a unique channel from the other WiFi signals. For $35, I think we'll be giving Chromecast a try and booting the Apple TV since it's just a paperweight in our household.

WRONG! This is NOT like Apple TV. It doesn't stream what is on your screen like Apple TV. It makes your tablet/phone a remote for what you are watching on tv.

    • @dioncollins9260
      @dioncollins9260 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is not like Apple TV but it does stream from your phone/laptop through Chrome. The tablet is a remote when using one of the supported services but can mirror your screen with HD video through Chrome.

    The chromecast is shit.
So much is missing, iOS not 100% compatible! only windows7+ and newer android devices are usable.
The youtube app is crap, everything is crap about it.
These have been reduced to £18 in the UK, I STILL WOULDN'T BUY ONE.

Another important point is that the chromecast can be moved to any tv in the house with incredible ease. Making this a simple addition to any tv in your home. Also, you could easily attach this to any tv in the house for only $35 each, much less than apple TV, even if you have 3 tvs to hook up, even if you want each tv to have its own. Quality is excellent, price is excellent. All videos I have cast to my 50" tv have been in hd, with ~no lag beyond what you would have from a wired connection or xbox.

Works wonderfully with Netflix, though I don't have Hulu plus, but with your Chrome browser it can stream anything from your laptop screen, however you will sacrifice resolution and may experience signal lag. If you are into Netflix, it works great with my iPad, iphone & Macbook Pro. Would like it to work with HBO GO & Comcast & Time Warner on demand apps.
      Pros:
      Inexpensive.
When used with a full PC and Chrome browser, can view any web page on your TV via WiFi.
Also can view video and photos stored on your Android or PC device.######

This is my second Tested review that I've watched and I have to admit I'm a little frustrated. In both cases I feel like you are billing these videos as in depth testing, and then you don't show us anything! Like when you plugged in the chromecast and then said "it's all set up, I'm not going to go through that again". I found the explanation after that rushed and confusing and don't really understand why that isn't something you would film. Some of the information in the video about the Kindle Fire HDX was just plain wrong as well.

One of the neatest things I've found is that if you have 2 or more tablets (or phones) who are playing around with this, all devices can add and manage, in real time, that play queue in youtube. Have a group of friends, tell them to plop the videos in the queue and everyone can have fun playing their favorite videos without fighting with "taking over" the tv. Multiple devices can use the queue in real time. It's amazing and fun.

Now I use my Chromebook to control the Chromecast dongle free of cords and wires from any location in the house via WiFi. Works very well and is easy to set up. One issue currently...Why is it that I can not readjust the time on the wallpaper for fall daylight savings time (1 hour setback)?

Another thing to note is there is airplay support built into xbmc, so anything you can run xbmc on you can do this same function. Case in point, a Raspberry Pi, which if you get the A model is less than $35, and with xbmc you can do a world of more entertainment options. Granted to get a Pi working with the same functionality as the chromecast you need to buy a WiFi dongle. My Pi was my xbmc device till I got my Ouya.

Yes there are such devices. Just search for Miracast or WiDi and you will find some. Windows 8.1 supports this out of the box, for Windows 7 and below it should be a bit more complicatet as you need third party software. Some Samart TVs even act as Miracast receivers themself so you don't need any extra dongle or device.
Actually I don't understand why Google has to develop their own solution as there is already something like Miracast out there, Intel did join this instead of keeping their own WiDi closed. And if you don't want to mirror your whole screen there's still DLNA which transfers just videos or music. So what is the adventage of Cromecast?

I like this in theory. It looks just fun.
But... for me dual screening on a desktop is a lot more intuitive, effective. Not only that but I don't need anymore wifi used. Netflix/Roku ruins that enough for us at our household. So much bandwith being eaten up :l
Just Do some picture in picture with your cable box, throw your netflix/youtube on your alternative screen, and browse the web and desk top with your main tv/monitor. Then you are set to melt your brain.
This is poorly executed I think. I like the idea of it but I am into lame things. No one is going to want to have to set up all the stuff and go to a website to get it to work. Roku is predominate here because you can use it like a tv. It only works with a remote, and has only the few things avaliable to you. Majority of people want something they can hook up, and it goes. This appeals to me only because I can see great use for other things. Like broadcasting your screen to someone else in the house. Let's say you where playing a first person shooter game, and you wanted to cheat with your friend. Well you can hook this up to your monitor and then a tv next to your buddy so he can see what you are doing. That or for a class room environment. Students could easily use the wifi network to share their project with the class from their seat. And then the next presentation will go just as fast and smoothly. The fact that it is fairly open ended is what attracts me, but for the most part... People are just going to go with their High bandwith consuming, limited roku box.

Chromecast is definitely NOT a simple wireless HDMI connector for your PC or other devices.
I'm sitting in my recliner in my living room watching TH-cam videos on my 52" TV without using Chromecast; all I did was plug an HDMI cable connected to my TV into my PC. With the help of usb extension cables or a wireless keyboard and mouse I can enjoy on a big screen Netflix or anything else on my computer or the Internet.
Or you can also use a Chromebook or laptop and an HDMI extension cable to do the same thing. Chromecast just seems way too restrictive and kind of a hassle:
"Chromecast is a digital media player developed by Google. The device, a 2.83-inch (72 mm) HDMI dongle, plays audio/video content on a high-definition television by directly streaming it via Wi-Fi from the Internet or a local network. Users select the media to play using Chromecast-enabled mobile apps and Web apps, or through a beta feature called "tab casting" that can mirror most content from the web browser Google Chrome running on their personal computer." - Wikipedia

    • @neutrinocoffee1151
      @neutrinocoffee1151 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

taltel139 One advantage of Chromecast or similar devices is while you're watching TH-cam, Netflix, etc. you can use your laptop to do other things simultaneously. If you just plug an HDMI cable in, you can't use your laptop to do anything else because you're directly casting your screen onto the TV. Whereas with Chromecast or another gadget you are free to do whatever you like.

Dylan my point is this: everyone will always have a bias towards their chosen environment. When the review started and the $35 device was immediately compared against an ipad and an Apple TV... Well that set the tone for me.
I've never met anyone who owns an Apple product that isn't a fanboy to some extent - it's part of the Apple ecosystem - and by placing Apple products prominently in the review of a $35 device shows where these guys stood on the spectrum.

I ordered mine on day one. At $35 (plus shipping, tax, etc) it's inexpensive enough that most of us can afford to try it out even if it's not a good fit. However, I have to agree that for most techie people this thing is going to sit in a drawer after a couple of sessions. The technology is clever but not world changing. I'm sure there is a niche market where this is a dream come true. For the rest of us, XBMC, WD Media Player/LiveHub, Roku, Apple TV, etc., are already way beyond this.

You forgot to point out, that it's much cheaper. But honestly there are situations where you just can't handle the cable, for example when you use your tablet for a presentation and want to carry it around. But mostly it's about connecting realy fast and not having cabels on your floor all the time.

This Chromescast is pretty awesome. *I'd recommend buy it on coupon links: **#http** ://**amzn.to/RD2NyD** .*
I bought Chromecast to upgrade the Android stick that I currently use. I thought that Chromecast would relegate my AppleTV to the never use anymore pile.
      Pros:
+++ Cost - $35 or $11 depending on when you ordered
++ Cross platform (Android 2.3 or higher, iOS 6 or higher, Chrome for Windows, Mac, Chromebook)
      + Easy setup
+ Small/portable (just need to bring the USB power and the device)
+ includes HDMI extension, usb cable, and usb power supply (amazing for the cost))############

PC + HDMI cable + Wireless Logitech keyboard with built-in trackpad = The ability to watch anything on your tv from any source, browse sites normally, do anything you can do on a pc, and without jumping through any hoops. The PC doesn't even need to be intrusive. A perfectly good tv pc can be built into a case no bigger than a console, and with a little more effort a graphics card can be added and it can replace the console too. This has been possible for years - why are people always trying to re-invent the wheel?

when setting up chromecast. you have to use a phone/tablet/laptop that is currently connected to your WiFi. it gives you 2 options. 1 you can enter it manually. or 2 it can use your password that you put into your "device" and set it up automatically. its a very simple process. it took me less than 3 mins to un-box plug in, and set up ready for casting.

Yes, u can stream video & Images to the Roku box, via Android(not sure for iOS). The app is called "Play To" & it's in the "PlayStore". As for the 2nd 1,"Beam" (Recommended over "Play To") formerly known as "Tonky beam". For this 1 u have 2 Search for an apk(for those that don't know, Android app extension. "(name of app).apk")

I got one yesterday, I basically use it to stream my workouts on my computer. It works a lot better for me because it doesn't buffer as much as my computer does when I stream them. It's good for my kids too because they love watching Netflix on my phone. :] Now , my phone battery can live a lil easier with chrome cast around and I don't have to fight my kids for my phone when I need to make a phone call.

I can't wait to get my hands on this. Amazon is back-ordered, but promised to have it delivered by the end of September. We watch a lot of Netflix in my house. The TV in the family room has an on-board Netflix app, but it's slow and clunky to navigate using the remote. Using my Nexus 7 to find videos and control playback will be a welcome change.

I believe (don't quote me) the Chromecast starts up in wi-fi direct mode, acting as a temporary access point. Then you connect to it and configure it to connect to your home wi-fi network.

I agree on the talking over each other throughout the entire video!!! Gosh, the random and useless comments when the poor guy is trying to explain upon the Chromecast device. So very rude! Felt more like a debate than a review. Guy with the beard, please dude...seriously...let the guy speak. I felt you where bashing the guy's WiFi conncetion, 7 inch TV, and just being plain critical over things that had nothing to do with the device itself. More reviewing, proper speech etiquette, and less annoying "overtalking".

This system is for where it is your main screen that you actually concentrate on. I like the chrome-cast for auxiliary screens in other parts of buildings. But for my living room I love the power of HTPC which allows me to do far beyond just watching TV and Movies. It provides integrated entertainment for multiple sources which I can link together e.g. watching documentary while researching same time pulling up images. Chromecast is not for the main livingroom, but like the kitchen tv.

  • @JamesWelbes
    @JamesWelbes 11 ปีที่แล้ว

:54 in and you've already said something wrong. The Chromecast does NOT stream anything from your phone or tablet to the T.V. It streams it directly from the cloud to your T.V. Your phone/tablet just tells it what to stream.
And again at 4:44, you're not sending anything from your tablet to the chromecast. You're simply using your tablet as a remote, the chromecast is streaming directly from the cloud.
Might sound like semantics, but it's an important distinction.

I'm sure it's at the bottom of the comments, but Roku is coming out with its own version of this. The Roku device has a real remote (that uses WiFi). I think the RoKu device is out in a month or two and is about $20 more.
If I could cast from my tablet to the TV (via an AP or adhoc) I would be happy, but I guess that's not part of the business model.
Oh,and a 3 or 4-port HDMI switch is not all that expensive (if you are short on HDMI ports on your TV).

Drag any local media file into that tab (movie file, audio file, pictures), and that content will get to the TV. It's a pretty nice way to watch your hard drive full of videos on your big screen.

It is very similar to my, HTC T.V. Media, box were you put your HDMI table cable into the tv then into the media box, and then your micro power supply.I use my HTC one m7, charger to power the media box, Then when I turn on my HD T.V. a picture will appear gesturing me to slide my 3 fingers at the same time across my htc phone screen. When I do so what every is on my phone ,
Will transfer onto the tv screen, I can wirelessly walk around the room with my phone in my hand, and play games on my phone and see it on my T.V. or play a movie and watch it on my tv.
Anything really it totally mirrors my phone and whatever i do on it. Considering i am not limited in any way on the HTC media box. which one do you think is better???
