To think that I nearly RETURNED it last night. Reached Walmart too late, then gave it another try. Onn 4K is a dream come true. At last, I can use a comfortable remote to reach my custom launcher and favorite apps with one click.
My Chromecast with Google TV had no lag until last week when I unplugged it and it did an update and now lag like crazy, even TH-cam waiting for thumbnails sometimes to display, and then while video playing the video motion stops and just playing audio, what a pain. Hope they have another update to fix soon!
Intriguing. My only concern would be longevity of support and durability (the remote just looks very cheap) . Nice clean interface that looks free of ads (for now). I'd buy it.
Am I able to cast Media content from my phone to the Onn device? That's the main reason I'm interested in purchasing a Chromecast device. I'm really surprised my brand new more expensive than my old old old Sony Bravia TV doesn't have Google Chromecast built-in but instead it has casting built-in for Apple, so it's forcing me to have to purchase a separate casting device. Is the Google Chromecast or Walmart Onn casting device going to be better for me?
Only downside is Nest cameras will only steam to a genuine Google device now... I just made a super fast m.2 drive and used a USB hub on the Chromecast and put ALL apps on that. The Chromecast doesn't lag when there's no apps on it. Seems to mostly be an issue when the on board storage is being used. I'm suspecting inadequate cooling as plastic isn't the best conductor. I'm considering taking it apart and putting heat sinks just to see if that would make a difference. If so, I might make my own box with access to the USB hub, built in m.2 storage and a better cooling solution. But, my main thing was being able to stream my Nest Cam to the TV so my wife can keep an eye on the kids in the back yard while folding laundry etc... and it's way less laggy than the built in Sony Google TV experience.
It's IR. The only problem is that it doesn't have a huge library of remote codes. I can only control the volume of my older Sony1040 but my newer Denon works fine.
@@alfmeister13, good to know. Thanks for the info. I am concerned for the 'line of sight' because, as I said, using an HDMI extension caused me problems with the Chromecast (not needed in the end because it is RF and, therefor, can be located behind my AVR). About the remote codes, no issue for me because I don't mind using a second remote (Logitech Harmony).

I got one of these(Onn 4k pro) and installed but the problem is when the TV is off and I ask question like "Hey Google how is the weather today?" the speaker of the TV box does not respond! I am sure that the TV box gets my question and it is answering but the voice is going to TV through HDMI cable even though the TV is off! Then when I disconnect the HDMI cable from TV and try again I get the answer from TV Box speaker! I don't know what is wrong but while the HDMI Cable is connected to TV and TV is turned off I can not hear any answer from my Google! Any suggestions will be highly appreciated to solve this problem!
fantasic device super snappy excellent build works great as a smart speaker! replaced my 1st gen firestick max. and couldn't be happier only negative i have is i wish the hands free played audio with the tv off
I'd been using the Nvidia Shield forever. Until I switched to the Apple TV and was shocked. Support of frame rate switching means the Apple TV forces the TV to match content frame rate so no more judder or dropped frames. And the Apple TV app learns and shows me exactly what I want to watch, especially as a sports fan. Google is obsessed with with showing you movies and TV shows only, which I just don't have time for. Also, apple tv supports dual Bluetooth headphones. HUGE for parents with small kids. Sports fans and new parents, switch now and never look back!
Except for the occurrence of very annoying dropout issues when trying to watch DV/Atmos movies on Netflix. This started happening to me recently and even the latest TVOS update side didn’t fix the problem, but toggling the Match Rates to off did. That and some DV scenes are incredibly dark compared to the same program on TV provider’s player box (Arris/Technicolor Xi6) - which while long in the tooth and short on user options, has been completely trouble free for over 6 years. If it makes any difference this is on LGB2 series with the latest WebOS - which is unnecessary cluttered and not as intuitive as the previous, but that’s another issue.
Interesting perspective! I'm not saying you're wrong, but I think most people would be fine with a TV and movie streaming box recommending TV shows and movies. Honestly, I'm surprised to see someone advocating for streaming boxes (Apple or otherwise) saying they don't have time for the intended purpose... to watch content. Your point about sports is valid; many people do rely on local TV or cable for that. As for the Nvidia Shield, it definitely has its quirks. I actually have both the Apple TV and the Shield, and I find myself returning to the Nvidia Shield because it supports all the audio codecs. I watch movies in uncompressed Blu-ray rips, so the full audio experience is important to me, and unfortunately, Apple TV doesn't offer that. The Shield's beta feature for frame rate matching works most of the time, around 85%. If Apple TV supported all the audio codecs, I would switch in a heartbeat.
I prefer the Roku Ultra. Roku is hands down the best streaming platform. It has frame rate switching, supports everything you need, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos. I don't like when a service pushes what it thinks I want to watch; I know what I want to watch already, and I like exploring to find something I've never seen. I don't know why you need recommendations for sports; personally I follow certain teams, and I know their schedules and how to watch them. It's half the price of the Apple TV 4K, and you won't be giving money to Apple.
You can't get it from Walmart. It'll be from some reseller. I'm almost thinking about heading the Falls on the Buffalo side or get an Amerifriend to send it over.
Phil! Good to see you back. Question on not opting into the Google Assistant features on this Onn 4k Pro. I have the classic GCCTV 4k and when I disable the Google Assistant feature and use the Apps Only mode I get spammed in the middle of watching something that pauses my video saying something to the effect of "Google Assistant is not enabled". It's like it randomly thinks I'm trying to use the Google Assistant features even though I'm not doing anything other than watching something. It's super annoying happens almost every day at some point. I'm wondering if you have ever seen that since you are experienced reviewer of all things Google TV. Cheers.
I can't get the "onn. Google TV 4K Pro Streaming Device (New, 2024)" to recognize four of my USB external drives, telling me they're corrupt. The 2TB also failed to even be recognized while connected to a powered dock. However, the Onn. does recognize a 256GB Sandisk thumb drive (exFAT). That said Amazon's specific apps are usually locked by them to not be able to run at full capacity on Google TV, if at all, so there may not be an option for you Sorry that I couldn't help more
Was chromecast even a thing? Tried their first generation dongle and it was horrible although it was cheaper than others. Just go with nvidia shield pro or firecube...apple tv is one may be good but less user configurations.

For people who like voice command devices, they typically already have those in their homes. So, in my opinion, i think they kind of screwed the pooch with that. They could have put that money elsewhere, such as a better chip, to make it complete a bit more with the Shield.
That's great to hear. I've always liked Google TV, but never bought one because of the lag. So maybe this version could be the one that I get. Has anyone pair it with other Google speakers? I want to group my tv with Google Speakers to play music throughout my house. I know this is possible with Google's Google TV, but I'm not sure if the Onn device can do this.
Anyone figure out how to "FACTORY RESET" this box? I can't seem to find that ANYWHERE on the internet. Even Google support didn't know how to do it. THE "RESET BUTTON" ON THE BACK OF THE UNIT ONLY RESTARTS IT, IT DOESN'T FACTORY RESET IT NO MATTER HOW LONG YOU DEPRESS IT...............
Is Amazon going to offer a better deal on its Fire TV lineup? If it does not on time for Prime Day, I will most certainly opt for this device. From the shots I saw, the Fire TV 4k (2nd Gen) and 4k Max (1st and 2nd Gen) and the Fire TV Cube (2nd and 3rd Gen) are the only ones which (a) support Dolby Vision, and (b) have a fluid interface experience. But all of the Fire TV models mentioned all cost more than the Onn. 4K Pro Google TV. On the case of the Cube, double. Hence, Amazon has to respond in a big way! Not only in terms of price, but also in terms of specifications.
I've had a 4k firestick for about 5 yrs now and have been looking to upgrade but didn't feel like getting an Nvidia shield or fire cube if I just want to watch TV. I had to "jailbreak" my firestick so that it could read external USB storage as well as add "3rd party apps" not found on any legal playstores... Not to mention that Amazon likes to throw software upgrades to disable most customizations on their devices so I think it's time to move on and I'm really leaning towards this device. 🤔
Could you address a question. I'm a fan of the original no remote Chromecasts. Recommended them to friends, family, and clients. They were cheap. They were great for what they were. When the Chromecast with the Remote came out I replaced all three of my originals. And HAAAATED them. The constantly being advertised to. Recommendations for services I didn't subscribe too was exhausting. They're collecting dust now. I used them for maybe a month before retiring them. Is this device the same Google TV with all the recommendations for services you don't subscribe too as the Chromecast with Google TV?
To be clear, I connected my Netflix, TH-cam, Prime and Plex. But 70% of my recommendations were for Disney, Crave, Hulu, and a half dozen others. It felt like I bought an advertisement machine.
at the bottom of the home screen you can click and customize what services you get recommendations from. I Only get recommendations from the apps I have installed
Interesting that there is no mention of the different remote debacle as part of this review. All future models will come with free tv button and backlight. Pays not to be an early adopter.

I still prefer the Google 4K version because of the updates and entire unit can be hidden behind your TV....My 4K Chromecast doesn't lag
This video quality is even better than Caleb's review videos. Kudos to the team DT for such eye candy video quality!
BRB. Telling my wife I'm eye candy. ;)
I think they filmed in DILFby Vision.
@@PhilNickinson lol, what was her response?
My Chromecast with Google TV had no lag until last week when I unplugged it and it did an update and now lag like crazy, even TH-cam waiting for thumbnails sometimes to display, and then while video playing the video motion stops and just playing audio, what a pain. Hope they have another update to fix soon!
Same.

How
There's a version with no ports and the remote is a lot simpler for $20. I've had it for a couple months now and it's great
Both old and new are great
You can
Would be great if we could clone our old streaming device to the new one to speed setup. Setting up a new device is a PIA.
Totally. ... Apple still rules that one. (Though you still have to log in to most individual services there, too.)
Great video. my Chromecast with Google tv is still going strong. But good to know I have options if I need something new
Thanks! And yeah, I wouldn't throw out a perfectly working Chromecast.
Still holding my breath that NVidia will come out with a new Shield. I use my current one daily, but would be nice to have something newer and faster.
Compare specs with Homatics Box R 4K. It beats the Shield in almost every soeand for $50 less.
@@renesonse5794that’s actually not true
The Shield Pro is only beaten by Apple
I think Google prefers to have companies make good products using their software. They make reference products for companies to emulate.
My AVR is in an open cabinet. Would it work (like my Chromecast)? Is it RF or IR? I don't want to use an HDMI extension because it can cause problems.
I have a Sony A95J with google tv and the lag during streaming even with a great connection is frustrating to say the least.
Whats the MLab app you used to measure your internet speeds 3:55?
Been trying to find one in Canada for 2 weeks. No luck so far.
What is model number. Need to setup in Harmony Elite
Question: Would they be updating the device?( OS updates/ Security updates)
Yes, these things get updates all the time, even my old Onn $15 streaming stick is still getting updates
Will this improve picture quality over Chromecast? That's the only thing i care about
Not really because Chromecast and Onn are the same 4K resolution.
I actually really like and appreciate the generic name because it just says what it does. there’s nothing to guess about it. I like the straightforwardness of it.
It's better than some weird arse named Chinese Android box.
That's all very true. I enjoy the cleaner homescreen, too.
@@chrgeorgeson No, I think you're right. Most people just use what's built in. And that's fine - but they can do better.
If you live in Canada, it’s a lot more expensive and harder to get
Yeah but you get healthcare. And more holidays. :p

Cheers.
I have both as the Google product keeps itself updated regularly. Both are good devices though as long as you go in and strict them.
I can't get the "onn. Google TV 4K Pro Streaming Device (New, 2024)" to recognize four of my USB external drives, telling me they're corrupt. Three of them are 2 & 4TB Crucial X10 (exFAT, unpowered), and Sandisk 4TB (exFAT, unpowered). The fourth drive is an 8TB Seagate backup drive (NTFS, powered). The 2TB also failed to even be recognized while connected to a powered dock. However, the Onn. does recognize a 256GB Sandisk thumb drive (exFAT). Do you have any ideas on how to get my portable SSDs working? I'll probably return the Onn. if I don't get it figured out soon. Thank you!
Back-lit buttons just use more battery power unnecessarily IMO.😏
Not a ton, but yeah. I mean they'd be nice to have, but definitely not a deal-breaker.
Is there a way to disable the built-in Google TV on my Smart TV?
Why? You don't need to do that at all.
Does it support OS version 12+ so it would support Playstation Remote? Would the controller connect via BT?
Can you do full control by voice without the remote like the Fire Cube? Like move left/right/up/down and select?
If you have working arms I can't see any reason for wanting to even use that or voice comands in general. Faster to use a remote in most cases. Atleast if you have a Logitech
@@West3rror well I'm disabled and can't use a remote ... but thanks for not answering the question.
@@nickp1914 Oh, then that is a very different scenario... Did not notice the prifile pic before now either so yeah. My bad, dude.. Just gotten used to healthy people beeing insane lazy and clueless these days.
I sadly cannot answer your question but I would suspect you can do that. But that's just a wild guess at this point.. Try searching for someone trying to test those commands. Someone akready have or will do that soon I suspect.
Or if there is another way you can navigate with some hardware? I just know there is aøot of stuff avaliable for different disabilities so maybe there is a good solution for you🤷♂️ Anyway, hope you find a proper answer for this and take care👍
I'm late, but I have one and can't confirm that it gets that granular. I don't know what commands you use to do it on fire stick but just saying "left", "right", etc didn't work for me. Like a few other things in Google's ecosystem non-standard accessibility features can be added via downloading applications... For example adding a mouse app, and button remapper app added two new categories in my accessibility menu... So idk if there's something that will help you get that same functionality. Maybe... Especially since Fire stick is just Amazon "skinned" android TV os while Google TV is just Google skinned android TV os. That said Amazon's specific apps are usually locked by them to not be able to run at full capacity on Google TV, if at all, so there may not be an option for you
Sorry that I couldn't help more
None of the Walmart stuff - for now.....
Do you think this cd be used as an audio dongle lets say attached to a soundbar?
Was chromecast even a thing? Tried their first generation dongle and it was horrible although it was cheaper than others. Just go with nvidia shield pro or firecube...apple tv is one may be good but less user configurations.
my chromecast is so buggy, it freezes alot and playback is kinda choppy on the regular. When I use my Roku I don't have theses problems. I mostly use my Chromecast for Casting.
Do logins carry over to the new device or are apps just preloaded and sign ins are needed?
It depends on the app. Netflix still uses that API correctly. Most others don't. But a lot of them make it pretty easy to sign back in.
Do I need my phone around to use the tv day to day?
So its basically perfect. Does it support ultrawide monitors?
Does it Up Convert every in 4k doby vison and doby autmos ?

Anything similar for the EU?
Was wondering the same thing 👀
Can it play youtube music without turning on the tv?
For people who like voice command devices, they typically already have those in their homes. So, in my opinion, i think they kind of screwed the pooch with that. They could have put that money elsewhere, such as a better chip, to make it complete a bit more with the Shield.
Will it work with my logitech harmony elite remote control with hub just asking
I swear, every time Caleb goes on vacation he comes back looking brand new. Nice tan though.
Literally younger. :p (I think.)
Will it work outside the us?
Can you watch local tv channels on it?
The only thing i can see that might be missing is DTS:x. Just like the older 4k box. As atmos was just added in a firmware update a few weeks ago.
CAN WE SIDE LOAD ANDROID APPS????
Yup.
Can you cast to it, though, like a regular chromecast?
Yes
How to setup with Logitech Harmony elite remote with hub ?
More choices is always a good thing
Exactly.
Considering it’s Google tv do you think they really lost?
My wish is for a Chromecast with Google TV Ultra, or better yet, an Nvidia Shield 2 (though I don't think Nvidia cares enough for this).
I hope a UK company rebrands this. Why hasn't Google thought of adding a Smartspeaker to their Chromecast.
@@darrenp5053 Nice. Will have to give one of these a look.

The resfresh rate is important to me. Not listed on walmart details.
I’m still surprised how good this thing is for $50. … Question is whether Google’s going to put out something new later this year. But, hey, you can’t beat the price!
Would have preferred a $39.99 price, setting that the previous one was only $19.99.
OK, but this one does more.

Weird. I have a really old 4K curved Samsung TV that isn't a smart TV and I have a Chromecast with Google TV on there and I don't have lag either. I bet this device is better but there's no need for me to buy one if I'm not experiencing any issues personally
