Alcohol vs Alcohol-Free Mouthwash | Which is BETTER?

  • Let's talk about the PROs and CONs between alcohol-containing and alcohol-free mouthwash!
Is mouthwash with alcohol bad for you or worse than using an alcohol-free version? Depending on what you’re trying to do, the answer can be yes or no. For some people, yes, alcoholic mouthwash can be worse. In other cases, it’s better.
Ultimately you need to work closely with your dentist and hygienist to decide whether alcohol vs. alcohol-free mouthwash is right for your situation. Even then, your needs and oral health status can change over time. It’s common to see the need to change out certain oral care products as your lifestyle, health, and overall medical conditions shift throughout the years. Your teeth and gums are just one factor in choosing your oral care products.
There’s no right or wrong answer when you’re choosing between alcohol vs. alcohol-free mouthwash. Everyone’s situation is different. If you have a dry mouth or sensitive gums, a non-alcoholic version will be gentler. But if you’re targeting bleeding gums and gingivitis, you’ll probably see quicker results from an alcohol-based blend such as Listerine. Always check for an ADA seal on the bottle. But most importantly, be sure to ask your dentist or dental hygienist which one is best for you.

Honestly the way you explain everything without judgement and with openness and kindness is so comforting. I haven't been to a dentist in about half a decade but that's going to change on Friday. Your channel is helping me get over my extreme fear of dental procedures and dentists in general! I wish I could go to you, currently in STL, but I know I'll be able to find just as kind of dental hygienists here too. Thank you for your channel, your work to provide this information so readily, and your upbeat kindness through it all.

@@bluesky4385 Luckily I was able to find low income clinics that had an even further sliding scale. And there are a bunch of dental students who do cleanings for free under the supervision of a head dentist with certification. If you're in the states, some states have expanded their Healthcare services like Medicare and medicaid. So more people qualify for these things and can get dental care thru Medicare/medicaid.

A potential con for alcohol free could be the glycerin that's in most of them. It's theorized that glycerin in mouthwash (and toothpaste) can actually contribute to cavities and gum disease. Glycerin is basically a type of sugar and it leaves a film on your teeth. I've been using glycerin free mouthwash/tooth paste for awhile and my dentist said my teeth looked great, when just a year ago they said i was beginning to develop gingivitis.

Always consult a dentist before buying any mouthwash, only they can tell you which is better depending on the health of your teeth and gums. But dentists usually suggest non-alcoholic mouthwashes more often.

I prefer alcohol-free because the kind with alcohol burns. I have to add water into the cupful of alcohol mouthwash to help with that. I switch mouthwashes daily, though I'm not sure if that's beneficial or not.

I'm 20 with a lot of saliva since I have a small mouth , so I use the purple listerine in the morning, for now I am gonna switch to the non alcoholic version cause alcohol mouthwash burns me but I have braces so sometimes I can have a bleeding gum , but a simple warm water salt rinse can fix that in couple days. Anyways I use the purple listerine in the morning and a opti rinse 0.2 fluoride rinse at night after waterpik, brushing, scape tongue and flossing

I’ve tried with alcohol and without, and so I stick with no alcohol Listerene brand, it works best for me since it really does help with bad breath (no more bad breath for me). The one with alcohol burns a lot and I don’t like that and you’re right it gives me bad breath because of the alcohol drying my mouth. So really experiment with and without and try for yourself folks.
