The Old Republic Era has so muc rich lore and history along with great characters like Revan, Bastila, Kreia, Malgus, Exile, Nihilus, Sion, and so many more. Plus it’s just more interesting seeing the Jedi and Sith as War Lords instead of either a dying order or an order in shadows

Just be glad Disney hasn't touched anything related to the Old Republic. Not at least until *Kathleen Kennedy* is replaced by *Jon Favreau* as head of *Lucas Film.* Only then we'll get Star Wars films that respect the lore.

Even other characters with much smaller roles were way more interesting than most characters in the Skywalker saga with 2 of my personal favorite sith lords, Darth Jadus and Darth Marr, who both had small roles to play yet were vastly fascinating characters to me, as well as many others of course.

It's the closest thing the setting has to a proper Galaxy spanning conflict. The Great Galactic War lasted for 30 years as the Sith Empire took over half the galaxy, and even that was considered a very fast offensive. It actually feels like a galaxy spanning conflict.

People always seem to think that the clone wars is the largest war in star wars when that is a complete lie, the mandalorian wars was larger and more destructive that the clone wars and it took the full industrial and military capacity of the republic, abunch of jedi defectors, the greatest military mind at the time (revan) and a planet killing super weapon to beat them.
Meanwhile the entire clone wars is just palpatine playing 4d chess with himself which is why I don't really like it that much

While the Clone Wars may be my favorite SW era due to nostalgia+aesthetics, the Old Republic stuff is nearly as fascinating to me due to its expansiveness and...well, there's some sort of quality there I'm not sure how to describe it. A sort of...vagueness, perhaps? Maybe not to the extent of Warhammer 40k, but the sense of vast mysteries out there is similar.
Your point on how the Old Republic era is a much more free setting (not stepping on the toes of various characters' histories) is something you mentioned to me some time ago, and is something I've thought a decent bit about. While I personally enjoy the fleshing out of previously established characters, there really is something to be said for the freedom afforded by having a setting that doesn't have to worry about that.
It really does feel more "mythological", as you put it.

Maybe Rey could have been Luke’s apprentice who has to take over in the 8th film but has a lot of eternal struggles
And then the 9th could be Rey overcoming the struggles and bringing back Kylo. The last battle could be them and the republic fighting off dark Jedi and their troops of the remanence of the empire!

Completely agree. The Old Republic Era is amazing due to the multitude of different narratives with no primary protagonist that must survive for later.
In a sense it is the Game of Thrones (early seasons) of Star Wars where the overall narrative (aka societies/cultures/etc) takes priority over individual storylines. Every character can be killed off and the story will continue just fine while the main films have characters that get to wear plot armor and thus everything that happens ends up being centered around those characters. This is similar to how the later seasons of the Game of Thrones show ended up when the shift changed from telling a story of the overall world and focused on individual narratives where the main cast was granted plot armor.

In the old "Legends" Expanded Universe my favorite stories were almost always one starring original characters, simply because those characters had far more flexibility in their arcs. Luke, Han, Leia, and the rest of the established movie characters were locked into clearly defined personalities and arcs that *NOBODY* would be dumb enough to mess with, or be allowed to even if they wanted to (Cough - Sequels - cough), but with something like Grand Admiral Thrawn or Wraith Squadron writers could go hog wild.
The Old Republic era takes that idea and applies to entire epochs. I love it.

Finally! Someone who understands why KOTOR II's exploration and deconstruction was properly handled compared to TLJ. I've made my own piece on the subject but it's infuriating to see many others just blatantly ignore the logistics & context for each one.
KOTOR II had room to experiment; it had the chance to do so because the setting was left relatively unexplored. New characters and worlds could be used to take Avellone's ideas and make them whole. Using Luke Skywalker and the state of the galaxy after Episode VI was NOT where one goes to do that. It's just that simple.

It's funny too because Tales of the Jedi: Redemption has the same story as TLJ's Jake Skywalker and Rey. The difference is it works with Ulic Qel-Droma and Vima Sunrider because Ulic was actually written consistently and felt bad for his actions, and Vima was shown to always be a bit of a free spirit even as a small child.

I definitely appreciate and love the archaic feel of the Old Republic. Seeing how the Jedi fell from grace and became trapped by their dogmatic philosophies, or how the Sith evolved from ferocious conquerors and into insidious puppetmasters, infiltrating, corrupting, and shaping galactic events from the shadows. It is often said that KotOR is a reimagining of central Star Wars themes on a blank canvas, divorced from all the pop culture icons, lines and characters we associate Star Wars with. It's partially what you're hitting on when you talk about why KotOR II's deconstruction works, and TLJ's doesn't.
There's nothing, of course, inherently wrong with TLJ wanting to deconstruct ideas in Star Wars, but it's simultaneously always trying to be consistent with and pay homage to all that stale pop culture imagery from the original films that we all know and love. It's *not* really letting the past die, it doesn't work. There's nothing new at the heart of that movie, only the idea of letting go of the old, without actually doing it. It enjoys having, as literal, actual text: 'let the past die' but the subtext in TLJ is always 'but not really lol'
Which is why it's so fascinating to me that the original KotOR can hit on so many of the same themes, beats and ideas of the original films, of all that old baggage and yet be full of life, be new, vibrant, refreshing. It's said that no work of art entirely escapes genre--and I agree with this. The inverse is also true, no work ever escapes redefining or breaking genre, in subtle or remarkable ways.
It retraces the steps of heroes who've fallen from grace, famous jedi generals fallen to the temptation of the Dark Side. The way KotOR treats its characters, and its protagonist, always reveal a tension: that a character might not be what they are now, that they might fall to temptation, or redeem themselves. The same tension is present throughout Luke and Vader's dynamic, but--not really the SAME tension.
It's exactly that sense of scale that you talk about that differentiates them--we see that dynamic play out with many characters, we're invited to look at an entire society of people moved by light and dark. It's also the fact that we ARE one of those fallen characters. And with KotOR's central twist about WHO you are, that you ARE one of those fallen heroes, but didn't know it. While that twist too calls back to the big moment in Empire Strikes Back, it also redefines it.
Not only, like V, are we asked to recontextualize past information and interpretations of events--KotOR wants more of us. Empire wants to shock its audience and cap off a personal journey for Luke, KotOR invites the player into a deeper reflection about self, the people around that self, and the competing Jedi and Sith codes which animate the conflicts around us.
At their best, the most iconic moments and ideas of the original films invite us to wonder, for a moment, of the society, institutions and people behind them, that would flesh out and give them further depth and nuance. The world of the old republic gives us those things, fleshes out those ideas. They take those moments and iterate upon them in meaningful ways. KotOR is certainly part of that 'Star Wars' genre so widely recognized, but it is also, in key ways, something different and new. And, of course, those little genre breaks in KotOR allow for the comprehensive, complete deconstruction of KotOR II--it paves the way, makes room for it on the canvas.
    Nice video!

And this is also why I've grown to dislike the Skywalker Saga even more. There are too many restrictions with the lore to do major changes. Everything has to be within these few hundred years and must follow the basic plotline set by the major characters, like Vader, without challenging anything too much, otherwise it won't make sense. Like how in The Clone Wars you could always tell they had to keep Anakin and Grievous apart since they canonically don't meet till ep3 or when we know that Ahsoka has to leave somehow since she does not appear later on. Also this restricts characters such as Ahsoka to make any major impact. It is really strange how the universe feels so small in some ways while in the TOR era you have this grand scale making even the most epic of events to seem small in the larger scale of things. Like for example, everything your character does in swtor feels relatively small, even the big events, cause so much has and will happen in this timeline that this grand and epic event feels like only a small piece of a giant puzzle.

The old republic is just full of rich lore and amazing characters, but also because it’s full of Jedi and sith and how they view the force which is actually the compelling reason I am a Star Wars fan and what makes Star Wars so unique.

I like the Old Republic period for the simple reason that the great diversity of factions, characters, and places means roleplaying is a lot more free. No Rule of Two means you can RP a Sith if you like, and the Sith have an actual culture aside from "hand wavy evil stuff". Likewise, the Jedi are large and diverse and not about to get stomped to dust like the prequels. You also have non-Force users, non-Jedi/Sith Force users, and even interesting factions like larger corporations, unaligned factions, etc. Some of these things still exist in the movies era, but they are tighter and more regulated for narrative reasons. Basically, the closer you get to the movies, the tighter the narrative becomes due to creative control and franchise necessity.

    • @belias360
      @belias360 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, that's not true. Both factions had planet destroying superweapons, you had the Emperor of one literally consume all life on the planet, destroying it, while hightailing to the other end of the galaxy to summon a planet razing fleet, and "emotionally unstable" describes several important characters in the era, including a Sith who kills his girlfriend because it somehow would make him more powerful. Just because their last name isn't Skywalker doesn't make that less true.

Surprised you didn't go further back to the Jed'aii Order because that stuff is really interesting. Monolithic octahedrons abduct children to Tython and they don't have lightsabers but force-imbued swords and they interact with the Infinite Empire and their Force Hounds from beyond the rim from who knows where! The Force Hounds were great, powerful dark side users wielding my favorite of all star wars weapons: the forcesaber. The very first type of lightsaber that was literally a beam of dark side energy focused through a crystal that can only be used when channeling the dark side. Also, this is the time when tatooinee was a lush jungle world whose rather intelligent inhabitants refused to submit to the Rakata and thus had their planet blasted with a beam so devestating, the planet was glassed and then that glass broke apart over time and became sand. The natives regressed into primarily two new races: Jawas and Tusken raiders, never to regain the former glory.

Yeah the old republic is kinda the best, I will say though it maybe cuts down th flexibility a bit I’ve always been a fan of the theory that the skywalkers are distant descendants of Revan
This is because Revan’s bloodline despite producing absurdly powerful people like satele, tends to skip generations, for example neither revans son nor satele’s were force sensitive. This to me explains why palpatine(or the force in older versions) would choose specifically anakins mother to carry the chosen one, as they are descendants of a peculiarc pivotal, and powerful force bloodline.
I also do not believe that any other bloodline like this has been observed and revan is the closest the old republic has to the chosen one, and it could even be argued he fits the prophecy as well as anakin

I honestly do not like a single thing about the story of the MMO, nor the Revan Retcons it decided were necessary. Have Bane be a Disciple in Kreia's Sith Academy who finds Darth Revan's Holocron and rebuilds the Sith while the Exile rebuilds the Jedi Order, have Revan's disappearance be do kill the first Sith Cult living on the planet Palpatine is on in Rise of Skywalker, and just set the Jedi Civil War around 1020 or so BBY.
