    This new Turtles show is hilarious. I take it as an absurdist action comedy, with super emphasis on comedy. I like it. People are taking this show too damn seriously. Which is the problem. This new show isn't serious. It's insanity.

    Just remember, it's called "RISE of the tmnt" so yea, it's ok that the team hasnt quite figured out it's own dynamic, they fight like untrained ninja noobs and April might become a reporter later on as well. And of course that means there's no Shredder yet, etc.
    In one episode they even looked for noob level crimes in the newspapaper to get their hero feet wet.

    • @christopherbennett5858
      @christopherbennett5858 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@alio6051 Honestly, that isn't exclusive to Rise. The personalities change a little in every generation.
      in '87, Raphael was kind of a snarky jerk. 2003 and 2012 have the anger issues. In 2003 Donnie is more calm as a scientist whilst 2012 is more neurotic with a real obsession with April.
      This version is a little different also due to circumstances. 2003 and 2012's turtles were raised by a Splinter who knew of the dangers outside. 2012 went to the logical extreme where they were raised like he was or, more likely, like how he thought he was.
      Rise though has a Splinter who ran away from a home that raised him like a pig for slaughter to the Shredder and had pretty much gotten some form of PTSD from his time enslaved by so many. In this version, they're raised as kids first in a New York that would just think they were actors or cosplayers rather than the small town 2012 was. That's why they refer to Splnter as "Dad" unless they're on a mission or training.

    The animation from this series reminds me A LOT of Kill la Kill, which is certainly not a bad thing. And the art style is amazing.
    My only issue with the show so far, is that with the exception of Donatello, the personalities aren't quite as distinct from each-other as other series.
    I think Raph is meant to be the hot-blooded leader; good at thinking on his feet and being spontaneous, whereas Leonardo is the the more careful planner, and the leadership will alternate depending on the needs of the situation.

      i like how regardless they still sneak in a lot of depth to him, sure he puts on this front that he is the cool one or the face of the group, but you can see his insecurities of not feeling useful to the group because he is not in that leadership role.
      Before Leo always had the burden of being a leader, but now he doesn’t have it, and instead is forced into a role in the group that is more than just that. Also love how he is naturally gifted at leading and has the best instincts in the group, the creators know Leo is the better choice for leader, but that doesn’t make it the right choice yet- which is why in the finale and going into this movie it will tackle that slow build up of Leo’s personal journey and having him as the leader instead of Raph.

      Can't agree more w this :) I think the early eps w Splinter were really just setup and that's why his personality is so stark compared to previous versions - the creators knew what they were doing and were ultimately building towards a payoff w that. S1 was epic and I loved how the Splinter "reveal" was played out. I think this show suffered more from Nick not really knowing what to do with it besides their initial promoing.

      Steven Universe overshadows it entirely and it’s not even better than things like the Simpsons(if you want to get technical seasons 2-8) or as much as I hate to say it, Avatar.
      This series is like the 2004 Teen Titans series(the good one) it’s funny, has some moments of action or serious episodes throughout with sprinklings of horror esque elements, it’s more anime inspired, it’s like literally the teen titans show everybody claims they wanted but they aren’t giving it the chance to get to story telling. That’s why I compare it to old teen titans and Steven Universe. Both those shows were pretty weird and episodic and sporadic in their first couple seasons with a “serious” episode thrown in here and there until it gets to the point it has to be plot driven because all the world building has been done.

      IDW is cool, but those are books not TV or movies. Just imagine if Batman, Superman, or even Marvel characters were only ever geared towards little kids. You would have never had the Dark Knight Trilogy, Burton movies, MCU movies, none of that. Think about that, then you can understand where long time fans are coming from. Times are changing, collectors, comic fans, and long time fans want and deserve something better. It’s been 28 years since we had a great TMNT movie for all ages.

      @@Dudee699 Trying to avoid spoiling anything specific, the show is called "Rise of the TMNT" for a reason. It's about a version of the turtles that start off as bumbling idiots but grow into characters easily worthy of the series legacy.
      The animation starts good and only gets better and better. Some of the best I've ever seen and as someone casually learning to animate I've learned a lot about how to sell speed and impact by closely studying how it's done in this show.
      The turtles themselves feel very different from most versions but retain the core of their positive traits and flaws, in a different way. Leo still has problems with pride, insecurity, Raph is hot headed and easily frustrated etc.
      Part of the show is actually proving why the new dynamic doesn't work and building toward a more traditional one through believable development.
      The show knows exactly what it wants to be and where it wanted to go. Just look at the trailer for the movie. The moment where they declare themselves "The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is the first time they are ever referred to by that name in this continuity in universe as a massive payoff to the show's entire arc.
      It goes very weird but very faithful in subtle ways. The show is a lot smarter than it might look at first.

    I'm all for new TMNT series, I loved the original series, loved 2012, and personally I think 2003 series is best series to date, but I don't think this series is really for me. Like you there were things I liked, like the animation, but some things I really don't like, such as Splinter's characterisation and the seemingly unnecessary changing up of the leadership role in the group. I'm not again changes, I just wish the story telling was a bit better here and made the changes feels organic and make sense. Certain things such as the 'mystic' weapons just felt thrown into the first episode and didn't have any meaning or impact behind it. I will continue to watch and hopefully it grows on me or I get more comfortable with the things I wasn't really feeling.

    To me as a person who isn't/never was that big of a fan of the Ninja Turtles at all. I have to say that I find this recent version of it be pretty fine actually. Yes it's does has a couple of flaws here and there but I think that can be improve the more episodes it will have down the road, I don't get why some people where making a big deal out of the art style for; to me personally I really like how its looks It's reminds me a lot of how some cartoons series from the early to mid 2000s use to have this sort of blocky, sharp, edgy kind of line work to them during then. I think how some so-called grown people that get so bent out of shape when its comes to the whole "it ruin my childhood oh no" can get too ridiculous and immature, not everything is going to be made for you alright & you can always rewatch old shows or cartoons from when you where young anytime. Let a new generation have their own thing instead of acting like everything have to be cater to you mainly.

    There's a lot of things in this show that I find really exciting! I love the turtles' new designs, I think it's really cool that the show branched out and gave them totally different body types after we've had a lot of kind of same-y looking turtles, and basing them all off of different species of turtle is an amazing touch. Along with the designs, I like their new dynamics. I'm most familiar with the 2012 series, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but it feels like Mikey often gets the short end of the stick and ends up as just a comic relief character with not much development. I think this new direction with making him a kind of sensitive, artistic soul is really cool. I also think it was a smart move to move Leo out of the leadership position, because it gave him more freedom to have more personality. Before, Leo was always kind of stuck in this role of "leader" so strongly that he never stood out as much as the others, who all had gimmicks and quirks that made them people's favorites. This new relaxed, confident, happy Leo seems really cool to me.
    The show does feel extremely rushed, though, and moving straight into episodic stories without any more explanation bothers me. I'm hoping that this is a show that will grow with time, and I'm hoping that it will grow on me some more. All in all, it's a new universe of turtles, and I'm glad that it's out there and that the story is continuing. I love this chance to see a brand new take on a show that's so important to me!

      Meh; it's got some things right (like introducing the Magica-Leena arc, which I thought was really a great addition), others wrong (some characters - like Gyro - were invariably turned into assholes; they awkwardly destroyed the triplet dynamic of the nephews, which was their _thing_ ) - and it still suffers from one big problem from the original DT: while it acknowledges some things from the Barks/Rosa comix, it still tries to reinvent the wheel instead of just adapting their canon. I think 2K18 is a better example - it clearly looks like a reboot from the Bay flix >w

      You're right. Ep. 2 shows that this version of the turtles are not the established crime fighting turtles in previous versions. They're just a bunch of well.... teenage mutant ninja turtles having fun with a desire to be heroes but lack the training. It is called /RISE/ of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for a reason.
      I dunno if I'm not the only one but I like this version of Master Splinter. Sure it threw me off but I realized that I'd like to see this Splinter develop just as much as the turtles. In the older versions, Splinter was already established as the wise sensei so I'm interested to see if ROTMNT will explore more into Splinter's character and will slowly develop him into the sensei we know him to be. A Splinter character arc for this show is just filled with so much potential.

    There was one reboot that really satisfied me, ticked all the boxes, and made a phenomenal show. It was Thundercats. Too bad they marketed it poorly and it failed after one season. Fortunately, there's another reboot that has fared much better that really excited me, and that's Voltron. I'm amazed by what that series has been doing.
    As for Rise of the TMNT, I felt mixed feelings about it. One thing for sure, it was definitely nice to look at.

    I know I'm late but these are my opinions on this series (if you don't like it ignore it and keep scrolling):
    1. There some episodes where I'm intrigued and then there are those episodes that just make me very embarrassed that I watched this in the living room for everyone to eventually hear...
    2. Raphael as the leader is totally fine with me because he's always been my favorite of the four, although I still love all of them
    3. I completely respect what they are trying to do regardless of how cringe I get from watching some episodes
    4. There points where this show gets a way too goofy for me, maybe it's because I'm so used to the 2012 series serious yet still has some comedy tone
    It's ok, the series is ok, pretty forgettable, but it's fine. Will it please the next muta- I mean generation? Yes. Will kids love it? Definitely just from the colors alone. Is it better then the 2012 series? Hell no, but still it's enjoyable and hey it's definitely more acceptable then the live action films (even though I also thought those were passable for what they are, but still has flaws)

    Finished the show last night. At first I was skeptical being a fan of the '87 show. By the end, I was totally into it. Only to find out that the show had been canceled after 1 and a half seasons. I'm a total nostalgia mark, but I'm open to being different and this show being different in the end didn't bother me. Overall, I'm disappointed that the show was canceled. I enjoyed it enough. Not as good as the other Turtle shows, but not bad either.

    I LOVE IT! And before anyone calls me out as being a "new age fan", I'm a hard core fan, thank you very much. I've watched all the movies and cartoon iterations. Yes, when I first saw Rise I had some negative thoughts of it but I gave it a chance and loved it!

  • @sadlobster1
    @sadlobster1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +60

    I really DID try to give this a chance...But it just doesn't feel like TMNT, in my eyes.
    I mean; Splinter being a fat, lethargic and sometimes neglectful. The new weapons, having April appear just like that (snaps fingers) without giving her a proper first meeting with the team, the fact that they tried to be "current" by changing her race, Raph being the leader.
    All this just feels so wrong, even if it is a different interpretation of the TMNT.
    The thing about adapting material is you must respect the source material, respect how the premise is done (ex. have LEO as leader) and depict the characters in a way that's not only familiar...but also respectable. While the turtles are, admittedly behaving like teenage boys.
    There's no excuse about what they did with Splinter.
    Not to mention the fact that this random baron dude they have substituting Shredder's role as the main villain also feels wrong

    • @plutterton
      @plutterton 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Bullshit. They respected the source material PLENTY with 2003. It's time for something new. If Batman is allowed to change and be re-interpreted over and over again then so can his fellow comic heroes the TMNT. And the animation is GORGEOUS.

    • @XenoJehuty84
      @XenoJehuty84 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @PropellerBusted
      Yes for TMNT2k3 they respected the material, but this is not TMNT 2K3 is it? No this is a 2018 show, baring the TMNT's name and feels like a cheap Teen Titans Go styled comedy with bits of action, using the skin of the TMNT brand to get butts in front of the viewing device and hopefully get the little kids to buy the new toys.
      Just because someone is new doesn't mean it's bad that's true. However, I'd argue not every new Batman incarnation has been well received either.
      I bring exhibit A: ASSBAR! Aka, All-Star, Batman and Robin by Frank 'the Dark Night Returns' Miller. I could give all the examples but I'd recommend just visiting Linkara and Atop the 4th Wall. ^_^
      Also, animated wise, The Batman was met with meh after the epic that was Batman the Animated Series. It wasn't the worst but it felt at times just 'off'. That CGI Batman show was canceled before it could really do anything, although that's half WB and Cartoon Network's fault.
      My main point is, while a re-interpretation is fine as time goes on, it's all about presentation. Rise of the TMNT is the kind of low-brow reimagining that reminds people why the term 'reboot' is such a dirty word these days. Maybe Rise will show a heart and a good story later if it does I will eat my words. However I don't trust Nickelodeon, and from the stuff, I'm reading from interviews with the show staff, I question some of their legitimacy to being faithful to the TMNT brand. April being race-washed, Leo and Raph being role and personality swapped, and Splinter being a neglectful and useless bum are not good signs for our heroes in a half-shell at all...

    • @XenoJehuty84
      @XenoJehuty84 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Vin Sama
      I'm all for reimagining beloved IP's if done well. I'm also for changing formulas, you don't need to follow the same storylines beat for beat over and over. If you pay homage and show respect, while craving a new take all's well. Hell, I'm okay if a spinoff goes off the rails if THAT is the intent.
      Rise of the TMNT is billed as the next TMNT, but with a comedy-focused take. They canceled the 2012 series which still had plot threads to finish, to produce this, and it screams lazy, trend-chasing, and pandering. With action shows devolving into an extinct species, it begs the question WHY turn an action-oriented show into an action-comedy that's already over-flooded the market?
      Because Nick cares about the toy money and not having to spend the green on high-quality animation like they did with the CGI toon.
      So while I admit my ill-thoughts towards Nickelodeon are coloring my perception, I just feel, this isn't really Ninja Turtles, but a knock-off acting like them. If the show turns out to be better than the first episodes show-case, I'll be happy to eat my words. I'd rather it turn out to be good and succeed, but right now my hopes are dim.

    Really love this show! Wish there was more of it and that it lasted longer in general. I know this video is from when the show came out, but I just gotta add some positive vibes to these old comments. Thanks for always being honest in your reviews Andre, but also, for being so nice about the show this early on! Have you seen any of the newer episodes? I also think they really were playing the long game because the reveals and plot stuff happening in S1 were epic. Still haven't finished S2 yet but it's been great and fun to watch. The later stuff gets kind of crazy and intense and I'm almost dreading it but have heard a lot of good things from other fans. There's cool horror elements to the S2 villain. And the Splinter build-up... man that was a payoff worth the time. I got the same feel from early eps, that this is an odd version of Splinter but thought, hey, maybe it's a setup for something else later. First it felt like he was just gonna be a side character like in most other versions but the more you see him, the more his actual personality shows through and he becomes more involved w/ the plot. Also, I love this version Leo. He's fun and more show-offy, which makes him more relatable somehow? He's just a teen who wants the attention and approval of his family but is actually insecure about his skills. I dunno, there's just something refreshing bout this take. And Ben Schwartz is a perfect fit, but I swear I forget half the time he's there bc I'm more focused on the character and what's going on in an ep. Still wish they did more with Mikey tho, but at least he's not just a nice surfer dude anymore and has more of a punch to him. It's funny reading how people don't see the turtles here as different, but I guess that's the vibe old fans get from modern teen characters. I think it's cool what they did w each design being a different turtle and different shape. Makes them feel less generic! Kind of a shame that Nick didn't really know how to promo the show or handle it, at least, that's what it feels like to me. They aired a lot of eps out of order and had way too many toys way too early for people to be interested in them. Also I feel like they could have released this series a bit later or at least more slowly so people had more of a chance to catch it and enjoy it in bits. Instead they saw the reception to S1 and ordered less eps for the next. And I dunno, that feels like a loss when there were already some in pre-production. Kind of funny to read all these old comments when this show went out with such a bang. But hey, from one turtle fan to others... eat a pizza or something and if this one didn't work for you, re-watch another or read the comics ;)

    Thank you, thank you, thank you for reviewing Rise in such a positive way, it's been a nice change :)
    I wasn't expecting to be able to enjoy a more childish version but after a couple of re-watches I found myself really enjoying the voice acting and the snappy dialogue between the brothers, a particularly enjoyable moment for me was Leo & Don's reactions as Raph went to eat the leftover salami at the end of the origami episode
    As for Raph taking the leader role, I think it makes a lot of sense considering the change to Splinter. I always imagine Splinter giving Leo the job of leader and Leo aims to really emulate Splinter. But if you have a version of Splinter that is less hands on as a teacher/parent I can see how Raph's personality would take on that role (it's often been a source of contention between past versions of Leo and Raph) but you still see Leo's natural leadership abilities shine through, as you already mentioned.
    Anyway, I for one am looking forward to seeing more.

    There have been some great cartoon reboots, Voltron Legendary Defender, Thundercats 2012, Turtles 2003 & 2012, Ducktales 2017 definitely, Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated, MLP:FiM, Transformers Animated, Astro Boy 2003, Casshern Sins, those new Mickey Mouse shorts Disney is doing, the Danger Mouse reboot, heck even Sonic SatAM, Sonic Underground, and Sonic Boom (after season 1 which is iffy) are all good reboots as they all started after Adventures of Sonic though SatAM did start the same year as Adventure of Sonic.
    And if you go into comic book adapted cartoons viewed as reboots you have X-Men Evolution, Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Batman Brave and the Bold, heck despite it being divisive among fans I'm loving the new Marvel's Spider-Man.
    As for Rise, I will admit it has good animation and a solid voice cast, but this show just doesn't interest me despite the fact that I was a huge fan of multiple previous turtles series. It's its own thing and I approve of that, just sometimes something just doesn't grip you, and it didn't grip me. I gave it a couple episodes but yeah, I don't think I'm gonna watch it.

Ninja Mode on! Fail cause lols. Leo doesn't need his swords, he has skills. Fail cause lols. And don't get me started on Master Splinter.
