    I just painted my 5 basement doors using a 4” x 1/4” nap roller. Result was very good, but with VERY slight stipple (compared to spray painted doors upstairs, which also has it’s own “look”). I’m fine with the very slight stipple (as the home owner and only a 90% perfectionist). I was hoping you’d show a trick in this video for completely avoiding roller stipple (as the title says), such as adding Floetrol, but didn’t see it. Roller instructions (NOW I look at it) says “as the roller looses paint, more stipple (pattern) will show”, so it recommends keeping the roller loaded.

    Hi Spencer. I’ve literally done the exact same thing with a chest of draws in my own bedroom… special zinsser coverstain adhesion primer to cover the old colour, then on with a durable eggshell finish by a brand called Dulux here in the UK. Used a 4 inch roller with an ultra short pile (nap) by a brand called “2 fussy blokes”. Absolute cracking rollers. I used this exact same technique minus the brush as it was just square panels. 3 coats in total… a quick light sand with a pad between coats and a wipe with a tack cloth and it looks like I’ve sprayed them. As long as we’re methodical and prep good then we are sure to get a great finish! Take care. Marc

    Another great informative video. Thank you. I have a dozen solid wood paneled doors like in the video to repaint. I am lucky that the original painter was flawless in finishing the doors with a brush. They look sprayed and its fooled pro painters. I know I have a great foundation to start with and I dont want to mess the doors up. Thanks again.

    This looks beautiful! May I ask a stupid question? I never know how long to leave the tape on before removing it. Sometimes I leave it on too long and then it’s really difficult to takeoff, and other times I pull it up too fast and the paint is still wet. Is there a general timeframe of when to pull the tape off?

    I just came across your channel - I'm an incompetent DIY homeowner preparing to paint my interior for the first time in a few months and watched this video (and others of yours) in its entirety. I'm detail-oriented, so I absolutely love the detail you go into! Your passion for painting and perfection is evident and awesome! But (at 24:20) I was shocked to hear you say that the $23/g Glidden paint from Walmart is "excellent" (were you being serious?) If so, can you elaborate? How did it compare in terms of how the paint applies and sets, its stain coverage, finish, durability, etc? If the paint is, say, 90% as good as premium paint that costs 4x as much, I'd seriously consider it.

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Please understand that the price of paint is a function of the amount of resources poured into advertising; the more of product as advertised, the price rises; this is the case with Glidden paint; it turned out to be a very formidable competition for the likes of the paint, you get at Lowe’s and Home Depot

    Just get the paint on with brush and roller quickly, then use the brush unloaded to remove any excess paint in corners and brush in upward strokes to eliminate any roller bumps. This is fine if you suffer OCD but the finish will be no different!

    Hey Daniel… Painting Fiberglass Pillars on an exterior porch. Applying Stix primer and topcoating with Regal Select soft gloss.
    Have tried foam roller and brush side by side. So far it looks like the brush is the better method. Is it unrealistic of me to expect no stipple/brush strokes on these pillars? Or is there something I can be doing better?
    Thanks!!

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If spraying is not an option for you, (the best way to go) then I would do a 9” wide 3/8” nap purdy ultra roller IF the pillar is smooth and without cut outs--those ornate grooves that are in such things as pillars, etc. if so, then I’d go with a 4” purdy roller with a 1/2” nap to do it. Steady & constant strokes--same pressure, paint, speed, etc. if this leaves stipple, go with a 4” purdy SOFT (if you can find one-if not, then medium stiff) brush and apply 2 coats of this final coat. Lightly sand the first coat after letting it cure for a day. Your second coat should look brilliant.

    Hey spencer, love your videos. What paint are you using?
    I have become the default painter for my boss, a GC and he uses BM regal select semigloss for trim. Seems like a Great paint (in my limited experience) but id never have that much open time. I find that i have to apply a generous amount of paint and still only have a matter of seconds to work it before i feel it tacking up and slowing the brush stroke. I find that if i spend more than a few seconds working it, i get roping. I offered to him using an extender but he said just use water lol havent had good results thinning with watee

    Oh my gosh, yes, sounds like Christopher Walkin ! Great voice, tone and manner !
    Great painting tips !
    One question though: With the fact that you said you don't have very heavy paint in the roller, seemingly on your brush as well, and you seem to be able to go over it many times, is the temperature in the room really critical ? I'm using what is supposed to be good quality latex paint plus an extender additive and I'm sometimes still having trouble getting it to lay off nicely, using proper wet edge and gentle liftoff technique, etc. Through the day the temp in the house ranges from about 65 to 75 F. Maybe that's my problem right there ?
    Thanks for any advice ! JT 😊

    The door came out beautiful. If I can ask, which is a better brand in your opinion Benjamin Moore, or Sherwin Williams? I really like Regal Select, but I know a lot of pros use SW’s super paint, at least I think that’s what it’s called.

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I must tell you that both companies produce equally grey paint. I think Sherwin Williams is more contractor friendly. Emerald is excellent but, I have to tell you,
      Don’t use cheap paint for your customers. Get into the groove in your business Elwood… Tell people the qualitative difference between the paint everybody else will use in the paint that you use. The difference between really good paint and paint that is not so great it’s only about $20 per gallon; convince people that for the duration of the time the paint will be on the wall come it’s worth it… If you tell them luck, the difference between the bad paint and the good paint is $1500, divide the $1500 bye the years that it will be up and you will tell them that each year you’re only paying X amount to have better paint on your walls, do you understand what I mean? When you break it down and tell them that in order to enjoy the better paint the difference is only $250 a year then they start to think of a differently; also come if you use cheap paint you don’t get a great job

    You definitely have exceptional painting skills but I question some technique. I have decades in the painting industry and can honestly say I have never seen nor incorporated the taping of a door to simulate joints. The rails and styles should be run simultaneously maintaining a wet edge. All painters have tricks of the trade but this taping advice could become a nightmare for the novice painter. Homeowners who are learning how to paint and searching TH-cam for advice probably won't prep a door as well as they should and could have a de-lamination of the previous layer of paint when pulling off the tape, they will also commonly leave the paint on for days, weeks before removing. You know yourself Spencer how many times you've entered a home and the customer had left tape on walls or ceiling while abandoning their DIY project. Keep up the good work....

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh my goodness you are so correct about that regarding customers who abandon their project and leave the tape up my friend; oh my gosh I have been in 100 homes with such abandoned projects. You know, I like what you said about the tape but think about a brother, wouldn’t it be nice to simulate the wood green or at least the bottom rail and the upper rail and it’s perpendicular counterpart?

    • @xbrizzcakez
      @xbrizzcakez 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spencercolgan You are right about some of the doors that are made today. The hollow stamped doors I find are the easiest to paint, with all the simulated graining stamped into them they can be tightly rolled and give off a sprayed appearance. Very homeowner friendly. I will add that I see doors on the market that actually have minute spacing at all joints to give a routed look at the joinery and on the other end one piece doors that have no joints at all. Thanks, talk again...

    Frankly, I’m shocked that, given your self-proclaimed “perfectionist” attitude, you think stipple is acceptable, much less an A- or A. The door should look sprayed or, at a minimum, look like an extremely well-done job with a brush. That leaves stipple in third place, which is a C in my book. I watched until the end just to see how it came out and hoping the stippling had flattened out. But Nope.
