  • In the debut of our new video series, Haas Maintenance Checklist, Service Engineer Orville Collins shows you how - and why - you should run the spindle warm-up program after your mill has been sitting for a few days. Be sure to check out this video, and upcoming videos in this series, to keep your Haas machine running at its best.
Note: Certain types of spindles, like HSK, require a tool to be in the spindle anytime it is running.

Great idea Orville. Is it important to have a tool in the spindle during the warm up cycle? I was always told a tool in the spindle above 1000 rpm’s is a good idea. Thanks!

My spindle only goes to 7500, so I've deleted that last 10k bit, and changed all the p200 values to P240. Same run time.

You guys should add table movements. X and Y to it’s limits and then back in reverse. All while the spindle is warming up.

I always have to warm up my machine a while before doing precise work because in the morning, a boring cycle making a good part the day before will suddenly be .0008" larger. as the day goes on, that number returns to normal.

One question I havent found the answer to is do i have to shut the machine off EVERY day? Or can i leave it on over night?

Orville, does this apply to lathes? I was told only the mill spindles need the warm up cycle, true or false? Thanks

Curious how it works in more of an electromechanical sense as I know the spindle has a different lube system than the rest of the machine.

      Hi Calvin,
First I have to say that I'm not a Haas team member but an experienced mechanical technician and I think I can give you some more informations about your question:
In fact, talking about lubrication is not a non sense but the consequence of the first phenomenon resulting of the spindle warm up procedure.
During this cycle, as you can see in the program, spindle speed increases gradually until it reaches its maximum.
This enables all the parts involved (cf: moving parts as spindle itself, bearings... and non moving parts like spindle housing..) to warm up.
First this modifies the internal mechanical looseness between all these parts and loosen all of those.
Secondary, as temperature increases, lubricating oil tends to getting more and more liquid this facilitating the lubrication process as oil can now go everywhere easier.
Knowing that I think that you will easily understand why it is so important to perform the spindle warm-up procedure prior to a heavy spindle load.
Do not hesitate to ask for details or explanations if it is not crystal clear I will do my best to answer back.
(I may have done some english language errors/inacurracies, please excuse me in advance and do no not hesitate to correct me if needed, that way I will get my english better and better).
      Bye

should i run this every day or only when the machine has been idle for 4 days+?

Thanks for the question. It’s good practice to warm up the spindle every morning, especially if you plan to run your spindle at max RPM for an extended period of time. We definitely recommend running the warm-up program if the machine has been sitting for several days, regardless of what the machine will be doing. -Orville, Haas Maintenance Checklist

If I live in a cold climate, and the machine warns me that the spindle temperature is low, is it still safe to run the warmup program as is, or should I make it dwell for longer between speed changes in the warmup program? Lets say it's 40 degrees F.

you really should avoid keeping your spindle in temps that low if you can avoid it -- I tend to keep my machines at minimum around 10c

I run this program every morning whether the machine sat overnight or over a fortnight. Just brew your coffee, and clear your dry chips.

I work in a shop with a bunch of machinist who are smarter than the rest of us. Haas never told them about the warm up and for 20 years they never did a warm up. They get pissed if you run max rpm and compare it to the rev limiter of a reciprocating engine. And they have to replace spindles.

Haas machines are so damn complicated to use. could just make it with keyboard and mouse, but instead theres a million of stupid buttons all around the machine.
