Now I'd like to know why the mics on your video sound so much better than when I just heard them on 2 other videos. Maybe you turned up the gain so they were all equal? That would make sense. Something that initially sounds louder will psychologically sound better to most people and is "cheating". :) It sure is surprising the sound quality one can get for about $20 these days! This was a very valuable comparison.
Hey man I was wondering if the lav you said you purchased is just as good under a shirt? I would like an affordable lav for hidden mic during indie film shoots but have yet to really experiment with any. Would really appreciate your help!
Hello, Post Disclosure World, small world this is...here we are choosing our lavaliers mics with Curtis Judd also. The lavalier mic you choose is very good. I need one too. Hey it looks like we won´t have any new UFO disclosure in 2018 yet, boy !
Hello guys, I'm searching the terminology for the thing which you put a microphone inside your helmet (for cosplay) and has a wireless or not mini amplifier and to a wireless or not to a speaker so you can speak through the helmet and people can hear you? I really don't know what to search for.. thank you so much...
@@curtisjudd Do more if you can and want to. They're usually as good as the expensive ones and can really help most filmmakers out there, the amateur and indie ones.
Man, I've searched through the entire youtube and this is the best lav mic recommending video. the second best is your another video talking about 5 lav mics...:P
I see your attempt to at getting your daughter enthused about recorded audio wasn't as successful as you might have hoped. :-) At least you got her to participate. If I had asked the same of my daughter at that age, I would have been lucky to get her to look up from her smart phone and give me an eye roll.
Working in restaurants, even fast food chains, is an excellent education in life for young people. Nothing motivated me more than seeing what could be, if I did not shift gears in school.
The youtuber "carreer" demands great enthusiasm. Yesterday I was trying to record my first vlog episode. Man...it´s difficult not to being bored. You need ti have an imense enthusiasm to keep the audience, and talk with conviction. One may take years of practice, because in real life, many people act not like that. And we still need to worry to not being artificial also. It´s weird !
Picked up a couple of A.Lavs several months ago upon your recommendation, and still haven't used them (been shooting at home in basement studio), but literally later today, we're going to test them out with varying recording devices, and have them out in the field for a couple of days. Just funny that you came back to this topic at the same time we're going to be using our A.Lavs for the first time. Thanks as always.
I like how simple and no-bs your videos are. I just bought the RODE Videomic Pro and for the price ($282.49 CAD with a $50 reduction) I am not impressed enough to keep it. I found it horrible in wind outdoors, which is why I think a lavelier would better suit my needs. I really want to get an $800 wireless Sennheiser lavelier but I think that is a bit out of my budget at this point in the game. Thanks.
Thanks Lucas. With the VMP and any shotgun microphone, they only work well if you've got wind protection when using them outside (foam isn't enough), and you get them off the camera and boomed over the person talking. So I agree, one of these lavalier mics would probably be a better choice. They'll still need wind protection, but you can get them closer. What used to be the Aputure A.Lav has been improved and is now the Deity V.Lav. I recommend that. Deity V.Lav at Amazon: geni.us/PtPd2nT
I'm so bummed out . I lost my DPA 4061 lav mic with XLR connection. I don't want an affordable lav mic, I want my old DPA! LoL, just wanted to vent. Thanks for your videos!
Hi Curtis, Ah, good move! I think one of the biggest improvements a lot of otherwise very good video makers could make is to use lavaliers, rather than the on board microphones. Much clearer and cuts out so much of the distracting background noise. A great kindness to older people like me who have trouble seperating speech from noise, something some commentators sadly do not seem to understand. Bob.

I sprung $487 for a Countryman B2d directional lavalier. It is great. I have recorded with ambulances and trains going by. That time, I did have to remove the siren noise with Spectralayers Pro. I record to a Zoom H5, concealed on the talent's person. The only problem I have is that it requires 48V phantom power. There is no small recorder that will supply it, except for the now defunct Juiced Link. The Juiced Link works, but the UI is hideous. The B2D will connect to a Sennheiser-compatible transmitter. I encourage you to try one out.
I didn't notice any difference in sound quality - they all seemed quite good. At least for your voice. I wonder if a "round" bass-baritone like mine would give any of them difficulties.
Hi Lau, they're all surprisingly decent for their price. As soon as I find someone with a bassy voice, I'll have a better sense for how they stand up in that case. Let me know next time you're in town. ;-)
Oh, ok, that makes sense. In many cases it will take higher fidelity speakers or headphones to detect the difference. But if your audience are all using phone and laptop speakers, then just about any mic will do!
Just a catch-up: Bought the Aputure A.lav (not EZ) on your recommendation. LOVE IT! Thanks. HOWEVER, I found that in situations where I can don't need the plug-in power adapter (Tascam DR-60D Mk II, Sony A7II), I'm actually better off without the adapter. Opposite to your findings, I get both a better, cleaner signal and less noise without the adapter. FORTUNATELY, the "full" A.Lav cost me just about 5 or 6€ more than the EZ version. So for the extra money, I get some comfort features (headphone jack, use as a high quality headset, use in situations with plug-in power, adapter cables, case), and am still totally satisfied with the "pure" mic. Still wondering whether the EZ version (the pure mic) may be a) different from the one I bought, and b) may even have better characteristics with plug-in-power devices, but for now, I'm happy with the way it is. THANKS for your videos!
Oh this is confusing for me. I thought at aux could go into all aux ins. Doesn't matter if smartphone or dlsr or field recorder. Great video, thanks! Now I know what I need to look out for!
The Rode smartlav+ requires phantom power so, even with the SC3 TRRS to TRS adapter, it will not work on a number of DSLR cameras including the Canon 70D, 80D, etc. Same issue with using the smartlav/SC3 combo for a PC mic port. A Rode tech support rep suggested the SC6 ($20) adapter (plus SC3) can enable recording on a PC mic port, but he didn't offer an option for DSLRs lacking phantom power. One post suggested using the IK Multimedia iRig Pre Microphone Interface to solve the phantom power issue, but at $40 for that device plus $20 for the SC6 is time to think about using a Zoom H1n, F1 or H4n Pro or other competing device as the lav interface, albeit adding more bulk to the overall setup but delivering a more robust set of features for the lav and many other general recording capabilities?
Hi Joel, slight correction and clarification: The smartLav+, like most lavalier microphones, requires plugin or bias power (3-5V) which is different than phantom power (which varies from 12 to 48V). The Canon 70 and 80D will supply plugin power and should work with the correct adapter (SC3). Most late model computers have a headset port which will support TRRS inputs so the smartLav+ will work natively in those cases. Need to confirm with your particular computer. If it has a TRRS port, it will usually be marked with a headset (earphones with mic).
Really appreciate bringing in the comica one. Been trying to help my mother in law with her business's videos, but they often have two people talking but are recording on a single phone. Couldn't figure out how to get two lavs in without complicating their set up.
Thanks for the video. It goes straight to the point, is clear and helpful. Also, it has been a long time since I've seen a video with 0 dislikes. That's really fair.
Thanks for the review, I had the Comica CVM D02 and it was amazing. I clipped both microphones on my shirt since I hadn't used it for two people, but unfortunately, it stopped working after 5 recordings. I tried to buy it again but it was not available. It was great because of the audio quality and less rustle sound. I replaced it with the Yelloway but not as good as the Comica Thanks
Hi Chris, I’ve been binge watching your videos for the last month or so and have found them immensely informative and helpful! Thanks for taking the time to put these videos out. I purchased the comica and aperture lav a mics based on your recommendation. Could you recommend a high quality mid-range recorder I could use with these two mics? I know I don’t want to use my iPhone in the long term to capture my audio. Thanks!
Hi Kaya, thanks! The trick is that there aren’t any recorders I know of with more than one 3.5mm input. Those with multiple inputs usually have XLR inputs. There are some camera audio adapters with two 3.5mm inputs if that would work for you? Here’s a comparison I did some time back on three of them: th-cam.com/video/B_0od_f_QkQ/w-d-xo.html
I use 2 of these (on Curtis' recommendation!). The Rode Smartlav+. I love it. You can hear it on my most recent videos from June 2017 forward anytime I'm talking to the camera. I used the Apurture A.Lav on my earliest videos. They both sound great with low noise (i.e., mic hiss). For my voice, I like the sound quality and natural eq just a tiny bit more on the Rode. Both are great and I always appreciate learning from Curtis!
Bought a lavalier from amazon brand is Slint for only 20usd. not expecting too much with that price but i was totally happy with the quality clarity is so good!
you laughing and (I assume) your daughter saying "I'm just reading the script" is the highlight of my day and I'm starting to notice I may be socially starved
Good video! Thank-you! I picked up the Sony ECM-CS3, in a large part because it uses an old 3 conductor plug, suitable for recorders which are NOT smartphones. -You can't plug those common 4 conductor plugs into a Zoom recorder, for instance. So out of the bunch, (except the one with all the complicated converter options), Sony's lav offers a high quality recording and is the only affordable clip on mic you can use with pro-level gear. Sony also makes affordable and very well built dedicated dictation recorders with high-quality compression. (The ICD PX series). I picked up one of those for $50; it's tough, runs forever on a couple of AAA batteries, has a built-in USB connector so you don't need a cable, and you get pro-level audio quality. Nothing like reliable, dedicated devices! Just drop it in your pocket, clip on the mic and away you go!
You mentioned the connections for phones and cameras but my question is which connection will work for 1. Computer 2. ZoomH6 What type of connection would I need. Is it the TRRS or the TRS connection?
Your video is so informative, trying to get all of that information in under 10 minutes I think well done. I was wondering if there is a similar video but for recording devices, so for where I would plug in those microphones in case I don't have a camera with an output. Thanks once again!
HI VideoName, I do have this "meta review" of recorders from about a year ago. Will need to do an update soon since Zoom and Sound Devices have added some great new recorders: th-cam.com/video/PRd-nZGGSv4/w-d-xo.html
Curtis , for you what’s is the best cheapest lav pro? Something like DPA and Sanken but for low budget people like me hehe and if it’s possible with small head for fitting in ursa foams :) Tks mate you have the bests audio reviews in TH-cam!!
I've not seen many comments on the PowerDeWise lav mics. Just bought the interview set this week and have found them to be extremely well done for the price. I think the one mic alone, with adapters, was going for $29.99 CDN.
hey, curtis, great video as always. I use your video as a reference most of the time. So glad you cover the sony ecm-cs3. I recently bought a Tascam DR-2D and itching to use a lavalier on it for interview purpose. I like to have a shorter length lavalier. Right now i am confused about which one to choose between smartlav+ or the sony ecm-cs3, they both sound good in your video. Spec wise it's clear that the rode is superior, but in your test, which one has less noise floor? and which one is the clearest sounding for vocal? I'd like to save money, but is the Rode Smartlav+ worth it for the long term? I recently bought a Tascam DR-2D and itching to use a lavalier on it for interview purpose.
+Eric Fernando the biggest difference is build quality. The Sony is cheaply built with plastic whereas the RODE is far more durable metal with a Kevlar reinforced cable. If you want something that'll last, I thing the RODE will likely hold up longer. But if budget is the primary concern, go with the Sony.
I love your reviews - thanks so much! I'm looking for something to use with Zoom on my macbook pro. (hate the sound of the internal mic in the laptop!) Don't think I need pro level...just something that will amplify my voice clearly....are any of these ok for that? Or would you recommend a bigger USB or XLR mic? I have an audio interface. Thanks in advance!
Hi Claire! The trick with these is that you need a way to listen to the other callers as well. You could use your MacBook's speakers, but that'll bleed back into the lavalier microphone. I'd probably go with earbuds which includes a microphone closer to you which will sound better. There are also a ton of USB microphones if you want to go down that path.
Curtis, since you're a sound expert, could you do a video on how to optimise sound for TH-cam videos where most of the listeners are using mobile devices? Fairly typical these days.
Hi Madhu, Here are a few: Dialogue Audio Post Processing: I have a full course on how to do this in Adobe Audition over at school.learnlightandsound.com I also have this free video. It is a little bit older but still very much applies: th-cam.com/video/VcMOBrdbHgk/w-d-xo.html Getting the right loudness is a huge factor in optimizing sound for playback on mobile phones. Here's one that covers that: th-cam.com/video/-J1v0bdji6c/w-d-xo.html And there are a bunch more over on my TH-cam channel - an entire playlist focused on sound with several post sound tutorials. Good luck!
Thanks J Dabo! If the mixer has a 3.5mm input and that input supplies plugin power (3-5V). Field mixers made for film often have these, but many mixing boards do not, unfortunately.
Great video, I'm buying the comica dual header based on your video. I tried to use your code to support your channel but I'm in Australia and the link goes to the american site. Great video!
Young lady seems like a typical teen that doesn't want to be in the video, but is there😂🤣😅. Great video. I was looking for a way to record 2 lavalier mic, but seeing this Comica Dual, its so simple, just plug in and record. Thnx so much 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
This Aputure A.lav is amazing. I need one. The Sony still has the best sound for me. I wish we could had here the sennheiser ME 2, perhaps it beats them all, but it´s very expensive.
Hi, Curtis, glad to hear that. I live in Brazil, and the "local" industry doesn´t offer many good lavalier mics, and purchasing foreing equipment is expensive. Currency here is almost 5:1 U$ dollars, so, anything like Sennheiser, Tascam, Canon, is like paying 5 times more expensive than the real price. Imagine you pay 2.000 dollars for a Shure VP-83 shotgun mic. Kind of that. I just dream about the products you review. So, although I prefer the best ones, sometimes, expensive equipment, many times I can´t afford them, and if there´s a budget good lavalier mic out there, it interests me. I´ll try to find this Aputure A.lav mic. Thanks, and keep up this great work.
Thank you for a very nice video, helpful as always. I use the Aputure "big brother" on a Zoom H5 with Phantom 12V and a Rode XLR adapter. I think it sounds great. A bit low cut with EQ in post will do find for a male voice. Than you for your enthusiasm!
Great video - I thought the Dutch King sounded best, It was more bassier. I wonder which one would be best for field recordings, vocal and guitar? Probably the stereo ones? I also wonder if some smartphones have video and audio capture software. Sorry just thinking out loud here.
Now that's really interesting, I own to aputure a lav mics and a Rode Smartlav and I also prefere the aputure mics. great cheap mics that you won't cry in case they get lost or broken.
Curtis, thanks for an informative video! I'm curious which you think sound better in general between Aperture A.Lav EZ and Sony ECM-CS3. I've always had good luck with Sony products, but I'd rather not juggle with an adapter and an extension cable while through a phone. Look forward to hear from you!
thank you Curtis for a really great video. would the Aputure A. Lav work with a Sony UX 560? and would you recommend to use a lav mic over a voice recorder like the Sony for shooting indoor youtube videos? the UX560 has a surprisingly good recording quality // I though the Sony ECM sounded really good
Hi Music Fed, I'm not sure. I have heard that Sony's wireless systems which also have 3.5mm mic inputs are wired differently. If you go with the A.Lav, be sure to buy it from a dealer to which you can return it if it doesn't work with the UX 560. Best wishes!
Hey Curtis, deciding on buying a lav for an extremely tight budgeted production. Planning to connect the lav to a zoom H1 recorder and place it on the actors. Our initial plan was to go with the Rode Smartlav+ but when compared to the Sony ECM CS3, it projected out to become much more budget friendly for us. We will also be having a Rode VideoMic connected to a Zoom H1N attached to a boompole. We are planning to make a low budget feature film. Please help us with your inputs so that we can make a calculated and informed decision. Thank you so much. Do you think going with the Sony ECM CS3 instead of the Rode Smartlav+ would significantly affect our audio? What would we be sacrificing if we choose the former as opposed to the latter? If you think taking on the Sony or the A-Lav is not worth it, we will somehow save up for a rode rather than spend it on the sony. How does all these three compare to each other? P.S. Just to help you answer it better, we are planning to purchase only one lavaliere and not multiple ones for multiple talents. Again, thank you so much. Lots of love.
Hi Nithin, the Sony ECM CS3 is physically larger and is more difficult to hide under clothing if that is what you're planning to do. That would be my main reason for not using it for a narrative film if that's what you're making?
Hi Curtis. Thank you for your videos. They are immensely helpful to us. =) We just purchased two Azden Pro-XD’s and were considering using them with the two Giant Squid Lav’s we already own (instead of the lav mics the Pro-XD comes with) via the TRS-TRRS adapter the Pro-XD comes with. We’ll be recording into the Zoom F8 via the Rode VXLR. Would this be a good/comparable option to purchasing any of the TRRS lav’s you've reviewed here? Is there any difference between the TRS-TRRS adapter that comes with the Pro-XD and the Rode SC4? Thank you again. Samuel Varghese
Hi Samuel, that should work. It'll be a lot of connections which increases the risk of one of them pulling out while recording but nothing that a little gaff tape can't fix. Good luck!
Man, the Aputure sounds amazing for the price! At home, I'd like to connect it to an Presonus Audiobox interface, but it only supports 6.5mm jack/XLR. Should I just buy a 3.5 tot 6.5mm plug?
Sadly, they stopped making the A.Lav and spun off their microphone business to a separate company - DEITY Microphones. To get most 3.5mm lavalier microphones into your Audiobox, you'll want an adapter like the RODE VXLR+. Make sure to get the "+" version.
What about the Boya Lavalier mics? I have used it for my iPhone and it uses a watch battery as an option between a smartphone and a camera with a switch. It cost $20 at B&H Photo Video. It does work with my iPhone.
@@curtisjudd I do not know how to do reviews on mics at your professional level. I do admit the mic has good clarity. I use it to make vlogs with my smartphone.
Wow really great content Curtis. Really appreciate the effort of making these video's! Which one would you recommend to use with the zoom h1 between the Aputure A.lav EZ and his bigger brother A.lav? And do i need an adapter to make it work with the zoom h1?
Thanks for the quick reply Curtis! Does it work without an adapter? And can the A.lav be used without the battery pack? It looks like the battery pack will only be in the way or do you say it doesn't?
The A.Lav comes with the right cable so no adapter is needed. It is designed for use with the battery pack which I believe feeds a different voltage than the H1 so I believe you'll need to plan to use the battery pack. It is another piece of kit and one that must be recharged periodically. So it isn't as convenient as others without battery packs. I'd say that's up to you. If you go with the A.Lav EZ and the H1, you'll just need this adapter: amzn.to/2wifLbm Good luck!
Curtis Judd i just came to the conclusion that the aputure A.lav is not available in my country. The rode smartlav+ however is. Is the rode better than the A.lav you say?
It is better built and more convenient for recording with a phone. If you use it with an H1, you'll need the adapter cited previously. I wouldn't say that any of these is better than the other. Listen on go with the one you like best.
Yes, they spun off their microphone division to a separate business: DEITY Microphones. This is the 2020 equivalent microphone: th-cam.com/video/-_nPN_9n3Kg/w-d-xo.html
Hey Curtis, I´ve scrolled through the comments but wanted to double check before deciding. - I plan on using my lav mic with my smartphone, macbook and a Zoom H1n recorder. I think the battery unit of the A.lav seems impractical, but I prefer having a TRS connector, as there is a much better selection of affordable TRS->TRRS adapters than TRRS->TRS. Any chance you could upload an A-B comparison of the A.lav withouth battery unit and the A.lav EZ on the same recorder?
Have you reviewed dynamic lav mics? I do interviews at conventions and have on many occasions struggled to record interviews without background noise of people and air-conditioners. Thank you.
No. There aren't a lot of them and then tend to be large and require a ton of gain - quite difficult to work with, to be honest. Unless they're headset mics.
Have you checked the Rode VXLR+ yet? If so, are you going to make a video about it in the future? Also great video comparison! I'm so happy with my Rode Smartlav+!
Hey Curtis! I've been away from all this for a while but have been catching up on all your videos: great to see you're continuing to create consistently great content. This vid in particular is incredibly timely for me as I think I may have to purchase a cheap lavalier asap, although I haven't yet been able to establish if my current phone, the HTC One (M7 variant) is capable of recording from an external mic (the manual I have isn't very detailed). In any case, I have a quick question about the Aputure A.Lav: is the battery pack is just for situations where the mic wouldn't receive power or is it part of that model's design? Seems like it's the one to go for in this bunch and it's a bit cheaper than the Rode SmartLav too!
Hello TheNorliss! The battery pack is part of the design for optimal performance and from my tests, it sounds quite good for its $35 price tag. I was able to get the mic to work directly into my phone but it didn't sound nearly as good and there was a fair bit more noise in the recorded sound. So while you can use it with phones which supply plugin power (most do), it doesn't sound as nice. Good luck!
hi Curtis, thanks for the video. Have you tried to record the audio via a DSLR? I was wondering which of these mics would create some buzzing, as seen in other reviews. Care to check that for me? And I love your reviews. Really appreciate your technical understanding :)
HI Christelle, this was recorded mainly with the GH5 which is not technically a DSLR but very similar. Which DSLR are you using? (the amount of hum, hiss, or buzz depends on the particular DSLR). Thanks!
Hi Curtis, thanks for answering. I am using the Canon EOs100d. And really, which one would you choose: Aputure A.lav or Aputure A.lav EZ? I can hardly hear any difference.
Listened to the video with good headphones didn’t hear a difference between the lavs. Is it my ear or just really good post processing that wiped out all differences?
Hi, I tried to keep the processing to a minimum so that should be the issue. If you can't hear a difference then you should be good with any of the mics! 😀 However, I will say that I could definitely hear a difference. I did not love the sound of the Dutch Kings or the Comica dual-head microphones. My favorite was the Aputure, thought I believe that one has been discontinued since this was shot a couple of years ago.
This is the first time I've heard of LUFS. Google says 1 Luf = 1 db. My experience is that compression ratio has just as big an effect on final loudness as peak db. At any rate, normalized -23 LUFS sounds fine at this end.
Hi Donald, yes 1 LUF = 1 dB but LUFS is an integrated, perceived loudness measurement vs. a momentary, amplitude measurement. This means that LUFS takes into account the perceived loudness of the entire clip of audio whereas dB is usually a peak amplitude measurement that doesn't necessarily correspond to perceived loudness. I hope that helps. Best wishes!
You're welcome. I know it's a bit out of your way to check out one of my recent videos, but if you happen to get a chance, could you listen and see if you think I would benefit from a new mic? I record into the Zoom H1. Thanks so much for all you do!
Unfortunately they stopped making them. They spun off their microphones into a separate company. The new company released this microphone instead: th-cam.com/video/-_nPN_9n3Kg/w-d-xo.html
Can mic be connected to both 3,5 mm and USB-C? 3,5 mil usually sends signal out to head phones, can the signal path be reversed? Does such adapters exist that turn USB-C to 3,5 mm (capable of accepting lav mic)? If so is the 3,5 mil TRS or TRRS?
Hey Curtis! What sort of compact 3.5mm microphones would you recommend for capturing live action sequences? My videos utilize a GoPro on my head, but I'm looking for something better. I'm using a Zoom H1 Recorder. (I need something that not only records my voice, but also extends and captures sound details of my surroundings). Lav mics I've used (JK, Sennheiser) seem to only capture what's close to me and have a steep sensitivity drop off at a distance. Thanks!
@@curtisjudd Thanks for the response! Any of the videos on my channel are a great demonstration of the application of the microphone. It's for outdoor "Airsoft" (like paintball) gameplay videos. I'm looking for something that would pick up all the details of the battles around me (my voice - which includes occasional shouting, footsteps, bbs hitting cover around me, as well as be able to reach into the distance to capture the dialogue of players that are sometimes up to 200 feet away). I know it's a tall ask, but I figured you'd be the guy to know.
Hi Dutch, I’m at a loss, to be honest. A lavalier will capture your voice and ambient sound close to you but will have mixed results at picking up people more than a few yards away. I’d probably NOT try to hid the mic like in movie sets but keep it mounted on the outside of the outermost clothing layer and conceal the cable as well as possible so it doesn’t catch on anything. Best of luck!
Tried a lavalier, and had exactly the result you mentioned. It's not bad, but I'll continue to look for something that reaches out a bit further. Thanks for your time & quick responses Curtis!
does the dutch king really work direct into GoPro? I thought you needed their custom input for that...also-no mention of that cable in the product amazon listings...
No, I believe with GoPro you need an adapter. When I refer to cameras here, I’m referring to DSLR and mirrorless camera’s with 3.5mm microphone inputs.
I'm thinking for your tests the A/D for all the mics is being done in the iPhone 7 headset adapter. I didn't think my Rode VideoMicro sounds as good on my iphone 7 than my iphone 6s for this reason but I haven't done a real comparision . Have you compared the sound of any of these mics on the iPhone 7 to earlier iPhones models? I'm just wondering if you noticed any difference.
Curtis, I watch your recordings and I like them a lot. Tell me please, are there any differences between A.lav and a.lav EZ? Are there any differences with the exception of the longer cable and adapters? The sound quality is the same? Do microphones have the same specification? I am looking for a microphone for a motorcycle helmet and I do not know which microphone to choose. Mic will be connected to Tascam dr-05.
Hi Lober, the A.Lav and A.Lav EZ are quite different. The EZ model is designed for smartphones, not to recorders like the DR-05. Also, the A.Lav has a batter pack which the EZ does not. Most importantly, I find the A.Lav to sound substantially better than the A.Lav EZ. I hope this helps. Happy recording!
Thank you for your response, which mic will be better for motovloging? There are difficult conditions- wind, exhaust noice etc. Aputure A.lav will be ok? Or better to choose e.g. Rode Smartlave+ or something else?
My preference would be for the A.Lav. But the most important thing will be placing the mic to address the difficult conditions. That'll just require some experimentation.
Hi Curtis, what would you recommend for higher quality audio for a lav (via XLR) that feeds into my Zoom H5 which I use as a preamp to my DSLR? Or would you advise using a 3.5mm to XLR converter for a number of available lavs? Audio quality is really important to me. Thanks, Scott
Hi Scott, the best sounding XLR based lavalier mic I’ve used is the Audio Technica AT899: th-cam.com/video/C4spfSMe78Q/w-d-xo.html I haven’t adapted many 3.5mm to XLR but if you go that route, you’ll need a special adapter that also converts phantom power to plugin power (48V to 3-5V) so that you don’t damage the microphones. RODE makes the VXLR+ which does this.
Is there/Can you recommend a compatible portable speaker unit where a Sony ECM lavalier microphone can be used to project directly one's voice to a wide space with a lot of people? I'm looking at the tour guides or the teachers who need to be mobile and project their voice to a wide/open space (at least 50 sqm). Thus, they cannot be limited to an AC power source. I find stereo sound more pleasant and appealing in comparison to mono.
That's not a space where I have a lot of experience aside from the pillar speaker array PA systems Like the BOSE and Electrovoice systems. I would forget stereo unless the tour guides or teachers are going to carry two separate speakers around with them? Also, how portable do you need this to be? 5 pounds or less? 50 pounds or less?
Curtis (or anyone ;), Am I correct in thinking that recording into a phone via 3.5 (ie mono) it wouldn't matter whether I used the Comica Dual Head or 2 Aputure A.lav's with a splitter... but if I wanted to record into a stereo capable recorder (e.g Zoom H1) then 2x A.lav with a stereo breakout splitter (e.g HosaTech YMM-261) would be much better than the Comica because the resulting recording could be tidied up in Audacity (split into 2 mono tracks with opportunity to clean / timeshift each mic) as needed? Many thanks
Curtis, do you have a recommendation for my scenario: teaching trombone online. I have a microphone set up to pick up the sound of the instrument well, but due to EQ for the instrument, doesn't pick up my voice unless I speak very loudly. I'd like to add a second mic (like a lavalier) to pick up my voice, but one that will reject the sound of the trombone while I'm playing (so hopefully one that will only pick up very close sound source--the bell of the instrument is roughly 18 inches away and pointed the other direction when playing). Am I hunting a unicorn here?
Perhaps a headset mic like the Voice Technologies or the JK MicJ: Voice Technologies Headset: th-cam.com/video/xXM5u6Ht67Y/w-d-xo.html JK MicJ Headset: th-cam.com/video/ifNG-q-sIDg/w-d-xo.html
@@curtisjudd Wow, thanks for the quick response. I like this headset option and I think the cardioid pattern of the second one might be best solution. Both seem to require power and my plan was to plug it into the mic input on my Rockville Rockmix 5 usb interface (going into my computer). The Rockmix supplies 18v through the 3.5mm mic input. Would this be too much? If so, what should I do to get the headset to input into the Rockmix (I don't currently have a wireless outfit that these two mics seem set up for).
@@topherlogan 99.9% of lavaliers and headset mics require 3-5V DC plugin power. I haven't heard of 18V mic power supplies before - that's a new one on me. But yes, 18V would likely damage these mics. If you've got an XLR input which supplies 48V phantom power, there are adapters out there like the RODE VXLR+ which would do the job - adapt from 3.5mm to XLR and convert the 48V down to 3-5V.
TL;DR
Dutch Kings Lavalier ($22) - 0:25
Aputure A.lav EZ ($22) - 1:35
Rode smartLav+ ($69) - 2:42
Aputure A.lav ($35) - 3:51
Comica Dual Head Lavalier ($22-$26) - 4:48
Sony ECM-CS3 Stereo Lavalier ($19) - 6:06
Thanks Jacques.

Dang it....this is a video I was planning on making in a few months once I got a few more lavs. You beat me to it.
Not to worry, there are a gazillion different "affordable" lav mics out there so there's plenty of room for more reviews!
@Podcastage I"m glad you posted this, I needed to find your TH-cam page lol!

@The Linthicums well said my man!
+Bushcraft Beats good luck! Don't hesitate to gaff tape those connections. 😀
Will do! We'll be pretty rough and tumble so good advice!

Bob.
Thanks Robert!

Thanks for the insights!
Let me know next time you're in town. ;-)
I heard the difference only with your daughters voice, it was like through a phone. Perhaps it would be good to test them with femail voice.
Thanks for the feedback and good idea! Out of curiosity, with what did you listen? Headphones? Earbuds? Phone speakers?
laptop built in speakers.
+Anton Grimpelhuber thanks Anton, glad to hear it worked out!

Yes, there's definitely a need for a simple option like the dual-head Comica. I hope it works out well for her!
Thanks for the video. It goes straight to the point, is clear and helpful.
Also, it has been a long time since I've seen a video with 0 dislikes. That's really fair.

Thanks for the review,
I had the Comica CVM D02 and it was amazing. I clipped both microphones on my shirt since I hadn't used it for two people, but unfortunately, it stopped working after 5 recordings. I tried to buy it again but it was not available. It was great because of the audio quality and less rustle sound. I replaced it with the Yelloway but not as good as the Comica
Thanks

Thanks Alex, glad they've worked out for you!
I hate The Rode Smartlav+ as it hides all high notes of my voice. Waste of money.

Very nice video Curtis.
will you say a few words about Noyce One lav mic ...
Hi rk, I had a prototype version of the Noyce One and it was really, really good. I haven't heard whether they changed the design since the original.
Thank you Curtis
Good video!
👍
When I want to learn about audio, I come to this channel!

You mentioned the connections for phones and cameras but my question is which connection will work for 1. Computer
2. ZoomH6
What type of connection would I need. Is it the TRRS or the TRS connection?
Computers with a headset jack usually need TRRS and the 3.5mm input on the Zoom H6 is TRS.
@@curtisjudd I just tried a TRRS on my Zoom and it worked. Is it possible that the Zoom H6 can take both the TRRS as well as the TRS?
@@StartToFinishPodcastingTV It is possible depending on how the think you're connecting to the H6 is wired internally.
Thank you. Great review. Can you suggest a good budget lovelier for nature recording like soundscapes in jungles. I have H1n recorder.
Generally for nature recordings I’d stick with the H1n’s stereo mics and not use a lavalier.
Thank you. I never thought that way. Let me try with the built in mics. Best wishes.
Your video is so informative, trying to get all of that information in under 10 minutes I think well done. I was wondering if there is a similar video but for recording devices, so for where I would plug in those microphones in case I don't have a camera with an output. Thanks once again!

Wonderfully informative as always! Thank you! May I ask: the Aputure would be suitable for use with a Tascam recorder? Thank you!
Hi Edward, yes, but note that the 3.5mm inputs on many of the Tascam recorders haven’t done so well in our tests. Quite noisy and not much gain.
Thank you for the video, Curtis. Very informative and great selection.
Looking forward to my Rode purchase (I know I'm a few years late :) ).

hey, curtis, great video as always.
Hi Madhu, Here are a few:
Dialogue Audio Post Processing: I have a full course on how to do this in Adobe Audition over at school.learnlightandsound.com I also have this free video. It is a little bit older but still very much applies: th-cam.com/video/VcMOBrdbHgk/w-d-xo.html
Getting the right loudness is a huge factor in optimizing sound for playback on mobile phones. Here's one that covers that: th-cam.com/video/-J1v0bdji6c/w-d-xo.html
And there are a bunch more over on my TH-cam channel - an entire playlist focused on sound with several post sound tutorials. Good luck!
Very good video, really helped me making up my mind.

It was very helpful! Thanks.

I really enjoy your videos. Can any of these mics be connected to a sound mixer?
Thanks J Dabo! If the mixer has a 3.5mm input and that input supplies plugin power (3-5V). Field mixers made for film often have these, but many mixing boards do not, unfortunately.

This Aputure A.lav is amazing. I need one. The Sony still has the best sound for me. I wish we could had here the sennheiser ME 2, perhaps it beats them all, but it´s very expensive.
Hi Dihelson, I find that the A.Lav actually sounded quite a bit better on most voices than the Sennheiser ME2.
Thank you Jan!
Great video - I thought the Dutch King sounded best, It was more bassier. I wonder which one would be best for field recordings, vocal and guitar? Probably the stereo ones? I also wonder if some smartphones have video and audio capture software. Sorry just thinking out loud here.
The dual headed Comica would allow you to put a mic on the musician and one on the guitar.
I was thinking the same thing, Thanks!
How do you manage sound level with only 1 input?
That's the downside of a less than $30 mic. Your only option would be mic placement to manage the levels.
dan d diger you subs me and i will too.

I would love to hear the Aputure A Lav compared with your Sanken COS11D. I imagine the Sanken is better, but is it $300 better?
I'm betting it sounds similar. the difference is largely going to be in durability of the build and potentially how well it handles RF interference.
@@curtisjudd So in terms of audio quality , i wouldn't be losing out on much? And yes, i will be making a narrative film. :)
@@nithinanil8077 No, as long as you keep clothing rustle to a minimum, which is an art requiring practice.
Excellent informational. Thank you

Great video. How about one on budget shotgun microphones. I am looking for a "starter" that I can use with my zoom H1 for bird / wildlife recordings.
Fine idea, I do have this comparison: th-cam.com/video/qRyUvMGVjis/w-d-xo.html
Hi Curtis. Thank you for your videos. They are immensely helpful to us. =)
We just purchased two Azden Pro-XD’s and were considering using them with the two Giant Squid Lav’s we already own (instead of the lav mics the Pro-XD comes with) via the TRS-TRRS adapter the Pro-XD comes with.
Good luck!
Thanks!
Man, the Aputure sounds amazing for the price! At home, I'd like to connect it to an Presonus Audiobox interface, but it only supports 6.5mm jack/XLR. Should I just buy a 3.5 tot 6.5mm plug?
@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions Hej Curtis, thanks for your quick response! Much appreciated.
Sadly, they stopped making the A.Lav and spun off their microphone business to a separate company - DEITY Microphones. To get most 3.5mm lavalier microphones into your Audiobox, you'll want an adapter like the RODE VXLR+. Make sure to get the "+" version.
Is it possible for you to do a video on the double headed lav microphone kindly
We just did it here. 😀
Super helpful vid, thanks!
You're welcome!
What about the Boya Lavalier mics? I have used it for my iPhone and it uses a watch battery as an option between a smartphone and a camera with a switch. It cost $20 at B&H Photo Video. It does work with my iPhone.
I haven’t used the Boya mics. You should review it!

Hi Mikhail, yes, will do!
if you susbs me i will you back
Very useful review, Thanks!
Thanks Tom
Wow really great content Curtis. Really appreciate the effort of making these video's! Which one would you recommend to use with the zoom h1 between the Aputure A.lav EZ and his bigger brother A.lav? And do i need an adapter to make it work with the zoom h1?
+Wiebe Willemsen thanks! The A.Lav will work with the H1 and sounds better than the EZ to my ear.
If you go with the A.Lav EZ and the H1, you'll just need this adapter: amzn.to/2wifLbm
Good luck!
Listen on go with the one you like best.
most useful video this channel dear sir 👍️watching form qatar
👍 Thank you!
Loved this comparison. The Aputure ones sounded best to me but are unavailable on Amazon now :(
Yes, they spun off their microphone division to a separate business: DEITY Microphones. This is the 2020 equivalent microphone: th-cam.com/video/-_nPN_9n3Kg/w-d-xo.html
@@curtisjudd oh sweet!
Hi David, the noise performance of the A.Lav when used without the battery pack was not great. I'd avoid that.
@@curtisjudd thanks for confirming that for me! Really appreciate your informative videos. :)
No yet, but it is on my list. Looks like it is only available in Australia and Europe based on the search I did?
very informative video ! can you help in choosing a good mic for gopro hero 4 silver? i understand that gopro can only support TRS mics.
Any of the TRS mics here that sounded good to you should do the job. Good luck!
alright ! thank you !
Hi Christelle, I'd choose the A.Lav for use with the Canon. The EZ is for use with phones.
Listened to the video with good headphones didn’t hear a difference between the lavs. Is it my ear or just really good post processing that wiped out all differences?
Hi, I tried to keep the processing to a minimum so that should be the issue. If you can't hear a difference then you should be good with any of the mics! 😀
However, I will say that I could definitely hear a difference.
Best wishes!
if u subs me i will you back
Great info. I've been using a stereo lav from RadioShack. It's an old mic and I'm thinking about upgrading to something. This helps!
Glad it helps. Good to hear from you Jay!
You're welcome. I know it's a bit out of your way to check out one of my recent videos, but if you happen to get a chance, could you listen and see if you think I would benefit from a new mic? I record into the Zoom H1. Thanks so much for all you do!
Hello, Couldn't find the Aputure mics anywhere, they're unavailable in the links in your description.
Unfortunately they stopped making them. They spun off their microphones into a separate company. The new company released this microphone instead: th-cam.com/video/-_nPN_9n3Kg/w-d-xo.html
Wow I think the 2nd is the best
👍
if you subs me i will you too
Can mic be connected to both 3,5 mm and USB-C? 3,5 mil usually sends signal out to head phones, can the signal path be reversed? Does such adapters exist that turn USB-C to 3,5 mm (capable of accepting lav mic)? If so is the 3,5 mil TRS or TRRS?
None of these mics have a USB-C data ports.
Which one is best bc I think the second one but I’m not sure
Yes, but that one has been updated to this one instead: th-cam.com/video/-_nPN_9n3Kg/w-d-xo.html
what would be a good wireless lav that you can plug in to your camera to record straight to camera.

Thanks!
Hey Dutch the Hooligan, what type of sound are you trying to capture and how far from you is the sound source?
+Christopher Ramos just informal tests and I haven't heard a difference. I read one formal test and the difference they found was negligible.
Curtis Judd, Thank you a lot! I will buy A.lav.
Hi Scott, the best sounding XLR based lavalier mic I’ve used is the Audio Technica AT899: th-cam.com/video/C4spfSMe78Q/w-d-xo.html
I haven’t adapted many 3.5mm to XLR but if you go that route, you’ll need a special adapter that also converts phantom power to plugin power (48V to 3-5V) so that you don’t damage the microphones.
Do you have a preferred , 'after market' furry for outdoor shoots?
I often use the Rycote Overcovers: bhpho.to/30ToQ8T
Just wondering if the comica dual head mic can be used on Zoom F1 🤔..I am sure its a possibility.
Yes
@@curtisjudd thanks a bunch ..your videos are always on point with no bias fluff ! Really appreciate the quick response
Curtis (or anyone ;),
Am I correct in thinking that recording into a phone via 3.5 (ie mono) it wouldn't matter whether I used the Comica Dual Head or 2 Aputure A.lav's with a splitter... but if I wanted to record into a stereo capable recorder (e.g Zoom H1) then 2x A.lav with a stereo breakout splitter (e.g HosaTech YMM-261) would be much better than the Comica because the resulting recording could be tidied up in Audacity (split into 2 mono tracks with opportunity to clean / timeshift each mic) as needed?
Many thanks
I think that’s correct.
Chris, do you have any updates about the lab in mics? Many you recommend are not available in 2020
I’ll have to look at doing a new video like this. Thanks.
Perhaps a headset mic like the Voice Technologies or the JK MicJ:
Voice Technologies Headset: th-cam.com/video/xXM5u6Ht67Y/w-d-xo.html
JK MicJ Headset: th-cam.com/video/ifNG-q-sIDg/w-d-xo.html
