I wanted to buy a 1980 Pinto panel wagon from a guy about 25 years ago. It was in nice shape even the paint was pretty good. All it needed to actually drive it was a transmission. It was a 4 speed manual or could easily be converted to an automatic. It was a cool little car orange/ wood sticker on the sides. Had a little round moon window in the upper rear corner. I wouldn't give the guy 5k. Likely the only thing salvageable is the VIN and maybe the glass. The car has sat in the mud for so many years the floor, sub frames rear quarters and rocker panels are probably beyond hope. Why do people do this to cars? How hard is it to put a car on blocks to get it away from the dirt and weeds and throw a tarp over it?
@John Johnson Its not about collecting or an overabundance of projects, my beef is not taking the most basic steps to preserve what you have. Why let something rust away, making a project inordinately more difficult (expensive) when it can be easily avoided?

When I was a teenager (early 90s) , I stopped by this dude's house to ask about a car in his front yard. Amongst a bunch of other stuff, was a B-5 Blue, stripe delete 69 Super Bee. The last inspection sticker on it was 1980. He said he was going to fix it up for his wife. I drove by the place last week and in the middle of what must be 20 times more junk, I can just see the roof of that same Super Bee sitting in that same spot. Like Tony, I've learned to keep a straight face when listening to the delusional stories.

Other points of interest: The hole to the right of the park brake release knob was for the manual choke pull. The voltage regulator on the firewall is usually mounted where the two ground wires are, but had to be moved towards the center of the car to clear the air filter on the rear carb in a Max Wedge application. Dash cluster is completely wrong as well.

That old Dodge will be a heap of rust some day trees growing all around it . Guys like him collect shit that people would really want and THAT is what turns them on. "Oh Ima gonna git to it one of these days I don't want to sell it " . Good video about it though Tony .
As an apprentice in 1962 I helped a journeyman tool and die maker make a compression plastic mold for a high performance water pump impeller to prevent cavitation at high rpm. The number of blades changed, I believe one was added over the standard Molar water pump. The steel mold produced 4 impellers each shot, used a round steel hub to overmold the plastic. The American Insulator Company in New Freedom, Pennsylvania ran the low volume production for Chrysler.

Great video, great car, cool stuff, and loved the history lesson. That cam/timing gear piece is very trick as is the Oil pickup. I really enjoy learning about old racing parts/cars. Keep up the great work.
I'd thought it was a fresh idea in my early teens ('70s) - centrifugal retard cam gear - an older friend told me 'Vari-Cam' had been around since the '50s.
If you were ever around dirt track racers...….Some old racers used to take a drill and oblong the holes on the cam gear and that was how they changed the valve timing. You put a locking shim on it when you get it where you want it, tighten it and bend the tabs over to lock it in place. Racing on the cheap.
@@tint661 That's still done to this day - and it wasn't just dirt track, that's how all us "old guys" lock them in after degreeing the cam in instead of paying more for adjustable timing sets. (I've been doing it for over 40yrs).
@@Motor-City-Mike Those custom old timing devices had been around a long time. My Dodge Demon had one in it when I went to put a Direct Connection cam in it circa 1980 I took the timing cover and gears off... My dad and grandfather owned Speed City USA back then and I had to whimper at their boots to find out what the hell that thing was. So that is apparently where that idea started out at... As a kid growing up in a speed shop I didn't know half of what I thought I did back then... The old timers always knew more... Now that I'm old timer..... Someone finish that one me...

Yes yes!

As an apprentice in 1962 I helped a journeyman tool and die maker make a compression plastic mold for a high performance water pump impeller to prevent cavitation at high rpm. Variable timing cam gears aren't that old, 'cause that would mean I'm old. Inconceivable. 🤣
@@tint661

When? For crying out loud? When you're 90 years old? Unbelievable! Clean off the car and put it inside the damn garage at least, for crying out loud!
Guy seems like a nice guy but people like him *MAKE ME SICK!* Yeah, I know it's his car but so are children who belong to parents; there are laws on the books that punish parent(s) for child abuse, and make no mistake about it, this is the automotive equivalent of child abuse!
He ain't got no more room in that garage he got 6 more just like that sitting in there only he got so old he forgot where he put all the parts and the note books on how they go back together...
If he's been collecting parts for it since the 60's, he's probably in his 80's now.
My dad would be shitting his pants right now. This is the kind of cars he loved to build. He always wanted something different. Maybe that's why I want to build a 63 A body wagon with a 354 or 331 Hemi. No one on the block has one of those. I love your channel and wish my dad was still alive to see it. He was a dingsman at the Chrysler plant in Belvidere Illinois. He was a first hire when the plant opened in 65. He fixed what broke on the line. I still have some of the tools he made to fix the cars. I use his plastic hammer to cast bullets. Not what it was intended to be used for but I'm using it. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
UT~" Incredible "!
"Cheers"!!
I was driving down the highway just cruising along looked over sitting in a yard under a big oak tree was a 65 Dodge Coronet. I couldn't get stopped fast enough so I turned around went back for a closer look. Looked from the road at it for a bit, around these parts way out in the country I've learned not to take it upon myself to get to close, some folks get really upset when you ask about their old cars. I built up my courage and knocked on the door. A teenager came to the door so I ask him, is that car for sale, he said yeah its my dads I said is he home? He said naw he won't be home for a while but it's for sale. I said do ya mind if I look at it. He said sure go ahead. It had flat slicks on the back of it. I pulled the pins and opened the hood, cross ram with two four barrels & 426 Super Stock on the valve covers. The kid said i think he wants $500 for it. I said ok I'll wait in my truck till he gets here. So I went to the truck waited for a while and my wife started bitching about she don't feel like waiting... nag, nag, nag. So I ended up taking her home and went straight back to that house. Someone else bought the car by the time I got back to that location. Now she's my exwife.
