    Actually, in the books, Quirrell DOES shake Harry's hand in the Leaky Cauldron. This is because also in the books, he doesn't have the turban then yet, because he isn't possessed by Voldemort at that point. The movie just overlooked this, but IMO it's important.
    Later, the book makes a specific mention that when Harry sees Quirrell in Hogwarts again at the opening feast, he now has the turban. It's heavily implied that Voldemort took possession of him after he failed to get the stone from Gringotts in the books, which happened the same day he was in the Leaky Cauldron and after he met Harry and Hagrid.
    Quirrell also was NOT the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher before book 1, he was the muggle studies professor before, BUT he took a year of sabbatical leave. That's when he found Voldemort in Albania. So basically, he just returned to teach in Hogwarts when Harry started. The movies (and neither the book really, i believe Hagrid at some point says that Quirrell took a year off to get experience and he met a vampire, which is why he stutters, but that's about it) don't mention of any of this, so it can be confusing.

      That is obscure and confusing. Damnit Rowling, why did you insist on denying cool magical ideas with unnecessary convolutions that never get brought up again!?

    Just had to comment to say how much I enjoyed this video! It took me five days to watch but I've just finished it now, it went from being on in the background to fully engaging with it, and it really made me invested in a franchise I haven't thought deeply about for years. Absolutely brilliant, this was great :)

    In Chamber of Secrets, the teachers aren’t really being all that incompetent. They don’t know that the monster is a basilisk, and they don’t know that you can only access the Chamber by using Parseltongue in a specific bathroom. Harry keeps the voices he hears to himself on Ron’s advice, because Ron says it’s weird to hear voices in the Wizarding World too. That’s why Hermione and then later Harry and Ron were the only ones who could piece it together. They had all of the pertinent information.
    A bigger plot issue might be that Dumbledore never asked Myrtle how she died, but we also know from later on that Myrtle didn’t always stay at the school. She was haunting and harassing a girl who made fun of her for years, and showed up at events outside Hogwarts to that end until the Ministry forced her to stay at Hogwarts.
    It’s a bit shaky, but it’s possible that Dumbledore stopped considering the Chamber by the time Myrtle was forced to stay at Hogwarts. Tom was already in his power, Dumbledore knew he was the Heir, and he also knew he wouldn’t let Tom chill in the castle long enough to attack Muggleborns.
    I think most adult Wizards probably never learned to brew Polyjuice potion and might not even know what it is. It isn’t something they learn in class until NEWT level, which means if they didn’t pass their Potions OWL, or if they choose not to continue with Potions, it would never come up. Hermione was only able to get the recipe because Lockhart gave her a permission note to use the Restricted Section.
    In the books, they tell us that they don’t reveal themselves because Muggles would want magical solutions to everything. I think the fear is more or less that wizards would possibly get exploited. I think there’s also the idea that magic might get weaponized by Muggles.

    I agree that there are some things that don’t make sense to me or could’ve been done a lot better had they have time to put the extra effort in. I’m not saying they were horrible decisions, but even accounting the smallest details is what separates the legendary adaptations like Lord of the Rings or Dune, to what’s created just for entertainment. And Harry Potter rides the line a little too tight. So I think I have a solution for this problem. I’m making a list of very specific and nitpicking events that happened in the movies rather than just general topics and drastic changes. Here it is:
    10. Have Hermione help Harry pass through Snape’s potion obstacle.
    9. Have the trio not use magic outside of school unless the stories from the books calls for it.
    8. Reduce the First Task and focus on Harry finding Barty Sr insane at the forest with Krum.
    7. Have Barty Jr not appear in the Goblet of Fire until the trail scene and have him scared and beg for mercy.
    6. Have Ron be the one to guard Harry courageously against Sirus Black instead of Hermione.
    5. Have Harry not been romantically interested in Ginny until he sees her kissing Dean and show us his jealousy.
    4. Cut the Burrow attack in Half Blood Prince entirely and instead show us at least 2 or 3 more Voldemort’s pasts.
    3. Have Grindlewald not betray Albus to Voldemort and die protecting him.
    2. Show us Harry using the Elder Wand to fix his Holly Wand.
    Honorable mentions:
    Have Wormtail die by his enchanted metal hand.
    Show us the flashbacks of the Marauders in the Prisoner of Azkaban.
    Have Barty Jr get the Dementor’s Kiss.
    Extend the Quidditch World Cup.
    Have Ron and Hagrid explain to Hermione what the term Mudblood is instead of herself.
    Show us Dudley’s redemption at the beginning of Deathly Hallows Part One.
    Keep the deleted scene of Dumbledore saying: “I’m not worried Harry. I’m with you.”
    1. Have Voldemort die as an ordinary person rather than turning to ash.

    Guess I'll be listening to this for the next few days. I love this franchise, growing up with the books and movies releasing pretty much around the clock was nothing short of magical and I fully believe it contributed largely to the insane global phenomenal it became. With the fourth movie they really begin to cut and hack away at the books, but I was always satisfied. The movie series stands reasonably well on it's own, Halfblood Prince is the one they really messed up IMO. So much backstory thrown out... for no reason. I hope the HBO series does them more justice.

  • @RiseeRee
    @RiseeRee 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

    Portkeys make sense because wizards of all ages were headed to the Quidditch World Cup, and in Deathly Hallows, we learned that some kids might be too young to do Side-along Apparition. I suspect that’s why Lily didn’t try that with toddler Harry! We also know from Arthur that a lot of adult wizards find Apparition too dangerous because of splinching, and they never get their license.
    We do know that there is a Dept of Magical Transportation that monitors the Floo Network and the use of Portkeys. Cho’s friend Marietta’s mother works for that department. Aside from that, if Fake Moody made Harry randomly disappear at any point during the school year, it would be a big deal. That was the entire point of using the Triwizard Tournament as a cover.

    • @Ozunoda
      @Ozunoda  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I still think portkeys are a bit of a shaky idea; likely to cause more trouble than they're worth for something as widespread as people traveling to the world cup, compared to, for instance, building a bunch of floo network ports for people to teleport to straight from their homes or from public ports. It's used in the world cup because that's the setup Rowling decided for the magic's use to get Harry to the graveyard.
      Whilst a random 'undocumented' portkey might raise suspicions, I don't see why that should deter any death eaters from capturing someone as important as Harry. Clearly he can be killed or used in a ritual before anyone notices, or enough people to do anything about it, never mind actually finding where he was taken and going there to rescue him. Fake Moody doesn't need to maintain his cover or, as far as we know, had no plans to do so after capturing Harry, albeit it was and would have continued being a great position to assassinate Dumbledore.

      @Ozunoda  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      They're still usable, at least as far as Krum and Harry's attempts suggest, but not as effective if the caster doesn't really want to use them. But I don't see why the mind of someone under imperius, given the order of passionately using an unforgivable, wouldn't think they want to use it. Only when the will of the victim is stronger than the will of the caster does their mind seem to resist the mind control, but whose to say they succeed in resisting before already fulfilling the task they were given.

    Great video! I’m only 8 hours through so maybe you will answer this later down the line. With hindsight of how all the books ended and what information is most important do you think a condensed but accurate version of the movies was possible? Maybe if JK allowed the directors more info?

    • @Ozunoda
      @Ozunoda  5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      JK giving more info would have helped soooo much, but even without that I think the franchise would have continued to be pretty darn good if only Cuaron continued to the end. Not only did his vision and style suite the setting by far the best, but I think he's a talented enough storyteller to have improved on many of the book's short comings and contrivances. And, given how hands off Rowling was in giving them any insider info on future plot stuff, to the point of contributing to some of the negative changes they made, I don't see why she should be so against some more drastic POSITIVE changes.
      Having said that, the movies for the last 4 books should have all been at least 3 hours long. Much shorter than the HBO tv series will go on to be, but films are films and don't need all the books slice of life fluff to tell a compelling story. The main storyline of every book and the series as a whole, when cutting down on that stuff, isn't so complicated or dense that it can't fit comfortably into 7 or 8 LONG movies.

    1:35:00 I could see there being some "Catch up time" exception for Muggleborns. Which would naturally make "Pureblood" children feel they're being discriminated against. Since the "Mudbloods" get at least at the early stage a few extra rights as an onboarding process. (Which does just show that the restriction was itself arbitrary if the least trained wizards are allowed to freeball it for a couple months right as that freedom is being taken away from the regulars. (While underage wizards with parents willing to take the rap get to practice magic freely) Having individual laws favor either or contextually could definitely be a good breeding ground for the tension.

    I‘m not entirely through with my 2nd watch yet, but what the hell:
    First of all, that was recommended to me out of the blue, but it‘s a thought-out and well-produced analysis.
    There certainly are creative decisions in the films that can be and are rightfully criticized (looking at you, Halfblood Prince), the films become less faithful over time and are definitively not perfect, but they are a great work on their own and improve on the source material by a lot. They did a lot of the heavy lifting to make the franchise popular. Steve Kloves was wise to cut back on all the problematic, stupid, and nonsensical plots and props. Like house elves slavery or how everybody bullies each other all the time. And who knew - a great actor like Alan Rickman even made Snape at least somehow likeable. Of course they couldn‘t solve everything, and so we still got that awful time travel plot in Prizoner of Azkaban, the subverting ending how Voldemort should have better read the fine print in the Elder Wand manual, or the magic system that is holier than George and rather just random shit that happens instead of a system. But since we can‘t expect the same level of detail from films than we can from books, it doesn‘t matter. If only Rowling had pitched it as a film franchise in the first place…
    So, given the source material they had to work with, it is amazing what the crew came up with as the final product. It‘s comparable to the „50 Shades of Grey“ dilemma. Less from the original source material made the films actually good. At least with the Harry Potter films. I could never recommend the books to anyone, but the films are really good and always make for a great re-watch.

    • @Ozunoda
      @Ozunoda  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yes, if my video has a thesis it's that the films did pretty alright with what the books gave them, mostly carried by the decent-to-great filmmaking behind them. The adaptation should have always been a tv series, or at least much longer films; the story as far as the books are concerned isn't as well suited to the blockbuster formula as its action set pieces make it seem. Alas, it seems Game of Thrones had to happen first to convince someone in a suit somewhere that high budget fantasy tv would make them money.

  • @Cyberleader672
    @Cyberleader672 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    3:14:40 With how we know the wizarding world works, wizards wouldn't have the resources to share their abilities with Muggles. Almost all spells wear off after a certain amount of time meaning you'd need wizards supervising everything to ensure safety (Which they wouldn't have the numbers for because there are very few wizards compared to Muggles). Potions require pieces of mystical creatures to brew, so sharing them with muggles would immediately decrease the animal population (And you can't farm them because again, that could only be done by wizards)
    4:08:15 The Charm wouldn't work to hide the Horcroxues. Any clue that the Secret Keeper leaves behind that can reveal the location and therefore would break the spell. Since Voldemort is already the only person who know where the Horcroxes are hidden it would mean with or without the Fidelious charm, Harry and Dumbledore would still find them the same way, by using the clues Voldemort carelessly left behind

    • @Ozunoda
      @Ozunoda  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wizards don't need to fully integrate their magic with muggle society for it to be beneficial in specific situations, like how a country might send war supplies somewhere they don't have a permanent military presence. Half-Blood Prince even opens with the new muggle prime minister meeting the minister for magic.
      And the fidelius charm is one of the series' most egregious instances of the mechanics of narratively-vital magic being obscured or contrived to suit the needs of the narrative, regardless of whether it would work on horcruxes or Voldemort would think or want to use it on them.

    • @Cyberleader672
      @Cyberleader672 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Ozunoda Yeah, i agree the Fidelious charm is a massive plot hole. I'm just talking about that particular instance.
      On the wizarding world being secret though, i still think that at least makes sense. No one on earth is going to just accept that stuff like potions, fast healing medical care and instant teleportaion are only available to a small part of the population. It'll immediately breed resentmant and hate. Keeping secret and helping Muggles from the shadows in small ways seems like the best out of only bad options

    • @theWebWizrd
      @theWebWizrd 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Your logic about the Fidelius charm simply does not hold. Consider a person that leaves a chest of gold in the forest somewhere. That person is clearly the only person that knows that chest is there. However, any other person might *accidentally* stumble upon it, or might have heard that a chest is left in the forest somewhere without knowing any specifics and do a methodical search to find it.
      The whole point of the Fidelious charm is to prevent such a chest to be found. It *cannot* be found unless the location is given to you by a secret keeper, and that is clearly true by the books even if you discover or guess on your own where it is. The death eaters were watching 12 Grimmauld Place in HP7, but they couldn't enter due to the Fidelius charm despite knowing exactly where it is or even having been there before. Similarly, it was not particularly hard for Voldemort to guess the Potters could be hiding in Godric's Hollow.
      Not the arguing really matters at all - just like has already been commented, the spell is completely just a narrative device with ill-defined rules that is impenetrable when the plot demands it and can unravel by accident when the plot needs moving along.

    • @Cyberleader672
      @Cyberleader672 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @theWebWizrd The rule is you can't discover it on your own, you need in some way to get it from the Secret Kepper. Every time they find a hidden Horcrux it is based of information Voldemort left behind. The Death Eaters couldn't get into Grimul Place because they didn't get any information from a Secret Keeper, they simply know that Harry owns the house. The story wouldn't change if Voldemort used the Fidelious Charm or not

    This video was too long. Halfway through it, I got hungry so I left it playing and went to the kitchen to fix myself a sandwich. But then I found out that I'm out of mayonnaise so I went to a store. There, I saw the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my whole life. But I'm a really shy person so I took up a three-year personality development course so I could introduce myself. She was very friendly and all, but unfortunately, she had a boyfriend. So I said, all good, I'm a mature person. I wanted the best for her and I harbored no illusion that I am the best person for her and she seemed happy with her boyfriend, so I didn't bother her anymore. But we kept in touch and we became friends and I got over my crush on her. Then she broke up with her boyfriend, we drank some alcohol because of it. I told her she'll be fine and I wished her well. I still think she's the most beautiful woman in the world, but like I said, I am over my crush on her. It was like five years already since I first saw her. Besides, I am quite happy with the friendship I developed with her. It was more important than a crush. So we kept hanging out, drinking, having coffee, and all. I had a girlfriend, she started dating other guys. My girlfriend wanted to live some other life without me in it, so I said, "Okay, I want the best for you and I want you to pursue your happiness." My lady friend and I drank alcohol about it, and she gave me the same advice I gave her when she was in that position and I became okay with the breakup immediately. But we were really drunk, so she spent the night in my apartment. I only have one bed, so you know what that means: She took the bed and I slept on the couch. But on the couch, I really can't sleep. Something was bothering me. So I tossed and turned for about three hours, then I finally couldn''t take it anymore, I stood up and went straight to my room where she's sleeping. I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her shoulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her, "you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and left it playing to get myself a sandwich then went to the store to get some mayo then I got so distracted by life that I forgot to finish the video." She said, "You know what, I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer." So we opened that drawer, and lo and behold, there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of play time on it.

    3:38:37 Yeah I think you should read about August 31st in book 5 before saying that. It might seem that way in the films, or when reading the third book, but itʼs easy for “the thing you fear most” to make it hard to do even simple things correctly. (Relatedly, I donʼt think Hermione was honest about her end-of-year DADA exam performance.)
    3:41:08 I donʼt think it became a twin for his Patronus. I think it became *him.* Lupinʼs Patronus is a true wolf; hers would be a specific werewolf.

    Voldemort sent his death eaters to grab the prophecy as a test of their loyalty. Also, him showing up to a government building himself would have given him away. The only reason he showed up anyway was because the plan went sideways.

    Yep but tbf jk rowlibg aproved pfvthecchanges becaus ther movies but fir the hbo Max show she was only convinced to do it ifvther do a more faitfull adaptation. Like Onky fantastic beast Manager to get the character depths the books had and that isnt a surprise jo wrote them. The books ar so well made and thought out that the movies could never do them justice. The movies ar deeply flawed and in my opinion createt a Image that when people read the books mixes sith it and creats nonnexisting issues innthe books

    From book 3 onwards they needed 2 movies per book.... :)
    PS was movie script sized, the only cool stuff they had to cut was Norbert and Snape's barrier.
    CoS could be cut down to movie size and was a good movie.
    PoA needed to be 2 movies, but they still got away with it.
    GoF was a failure because the book was huge and needed 2 movies to tell, the cut down version was feeble.
    OotP was a better movie but would have been epic as 2 movies.
    The books got bigger, and the movies stayed the same length, something had to give.

    Harry Potter will test the ambitious existence of All Time forth. I love JRR Tolkiens works, though JK Rowling made something that simply feels, magically unique and magnificently innovative. I know many may come to the conclusion that, it is just for Young Adults. However how very wrong they could ever be, great video and thank you.

      How dare you putting Tolkien and Rowling even in the same league? One created a thought-out fantasy world with its own languages, having to write a guide for translators on how to correctly translate the names of the story. And the other wrote a shallow power fantasy to feed children‘s escapism. And while adults can enjoy that too, for sure, nothing about Harry Potter is unique or original or creative. If you really think that I suggest you start reading more fantasy books.
      One can like or dislike Tolkien‘s writing style, but his work is objectively superior to hacks like Rowling. Many accomplished authors have called her out on that. You don‘t have to write like a 7-year-old to write for a 7-year-old.

      @ Tis not a question of who is better mate. Both are Prolific Writers, therefore competing comparisons is a futile reminder to which you frantically admire. Meaning, it all amount’s upon your own desires. I enjoy each quite specifically amongst opulent magnificence. Need not on portraying one to be riotously superior than the other. Tad Williams and George RR Martin are also brilliant storytellers. Each their own, unless you become avarice on macabre intentions in preluding fanatic single conformity. Harry Potter shall test the will of time, just as Tolkien continues to do so thus far.
