Hey, if you are a high school bassoon player from Georgia (or anywhere)you should look into going to Georgia State. Michele will be the new bassoon professor there starting in fall of 2008!

I think that mellow tone is due to the wooden construction as with the Oboe. I think that is what makes them my favourite orchestral instruments

This playing brings tears to my eyes. I played bassoon for 3 years in middle school and had planned on playing in high school but the Texas school board required you to do marching band. They tried to make me learn sax in a week. I quit. If only they just let me play the instrument I loved. Maybe I'll pick it up again one day....

Michele has studied the bassoon for 11-12 years and makes her own reeds, plays on a Puchner bassoon, which is wood. Her bocal is of special design, which is why it looks longer than a normal bocal. Really it is just stretched out, not as curved. But really, the reason she sounds good is because she has a lot of ability, works very hard and studies with one of the best bassoonists in the world.

“The bassoon is one of my favorite instruments. It has a medieval aroma, like the days when everything used to sound like that. Some people crave baseball...I find this unfathomable, but I can easily understand why a person could get excited about playing the bassoon.”

Ah, the bassoon. The orchestral instrument with which I fell in love, when I was in the 4th grade. It eventually led me to an even deeper love of classical music, something that has been in my life nearly every day since. Of course, I can't play a note on any instrument, but if God offered me one wish, I would play the bassoon, the instrument of sublime sound.

They have clarinet in elementary?! In my band, you either start on clarinet, flute, trombone, trumpet, or percussion, and the next year you can choose a different, more advanced one if you wish. It helps because you already have knowledge of one instrument before you start another. It's lots of fun to play bassoon, and I play clarinet when I march! :)

The reason shes moving around so much is simple. So she can get the fingerings right, cuss with the bassoon you have to half hole certain notes . Which awkwardly messes with the position of your arm. For example i think d flat you have to move your thumb up and press three levers instead of the usual one. Which moves your arm down, and so on

Actually, you are not correct in any way. Im a bassoonist and the reason that we move is to kind of "feel" the music. It helps with us to get our ideas across. Its hard to explain, bt it is similar to improv in dancing. Sorry if i sounded rude.

Oboe has more difficult tone certainly, but bassoon tone is no walk in the park and although oboe has strange fingerings altissimo bassoon fingerings are insane (high G# has 96 fingerings)

It's from the Bassoon Concerto in F Major by Carl Maria von Weber-a great piece and a lot of fun to listen to. I believe this is part of the 3rd movement from it that she's playing in this clip

The voting system isn't supposed to represent your hatred for this person or their talent. It's just an unguided option you have to click up or down, based on how you're feeling. If you don't dig this piece or the video or the performance, you can click down. Even if she rocked the bassoon it doesn't mean everyone enjoys hearing it. So they can move on to another video and leave the voting alone, or they can drop a vote expressing their dislike first. If there were universal guidelines for this, then we'd all be on the same "sheet of music" when it comes to the voting.

Some people have a very rare infliction whereby whenever they enter a space they are announced by a bassoon. It usually effects rotund, older comical figures. Very irritating after a while.
