    Looked to me like (1) D'Arnaud was not blocking the plate illegally, as he didn't really come into the runner's path until he had the ball, but (2) the tag was late, and the runner should have been safe. I'm a Phillies fan, by the way, so I dislike both teams.

    This was a New York call. Instant Replay has been a joke so far. For every call they get right, they miss 10. It's unreal. You have 20 angles to see something. How are you so incompetent? Not only was a catcher blocking the plate, but Bonifacio's knee touched home before the glove came down.

    The catcher was a bit toward the 1st-base side when he caught the ball, which was before the runner got there. Therefore, no obstruction. The umpires (both at the park & in New York) may have ruled the runner's leg was above, but never on, home plate (which, unlike the bases, is only a fraction of an inch above the surrounding ground) at the time of the tag. Without definitive evidence to the contrary, the initial "out" call stands.
    An initial "safe" call would also have been hard to overturn.

    I'm a braves fan, but as far as blocking the plate is concerned, I'm not convinced that d'Arnaud should have been called for blocking the plate. Pause it right at 1:09. Bonifacio isn't even in the Right handed batters box yet and d'Arnaud is in possession of the ball. Also at that point, there exists a path to home plate. After that moment, d'Arnaud is free to block the plate.

    • @zach6806

    • @larrycopeland2413
      @larrycopeland2413 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed... the runner should have been ruled safe on the merit of beating the tag... but as far as blocking the plate goes, I'd say no it wasn't... once the catcher is in the act of receiving the throw, he has to go where the throw takes him, even if it is into the path of the runner... and I think that's what happened here. One question I have is, once the runner sees the catcher coming in front of the plate to catch the throw, why didn't the he slide to the outside to stay farther away from the catcher's tag attempt?

    If I watch the video of the play and am asked make my own call, after watching 5 or 6 times with slow motion and freeze frame, I probably say safe but I'm still not sure. If I'm watching the video and asked to overturn the on-field call, I've got nothing regardless of whether the on-field call was Safe or Out, there just isn't anything definitive there.
    As to obstruction, no, the catcher is good there. The path to the plate is wide open until he catches the ball and drops the knee. It's true the runner would have been safe if he didn't hit the catcher's leg, but the catcher has the ball so that's all legal.

  • @TampaJohn
    @TampaJohn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    There was no way they could reverse that call. Both his legs appeared to go to either side of the plate without touching it. Also, if it had been a Mets runner, these homer announcers would be singing the praises of the catcher doing a masterful job of blocking the plate. They're a joke.

  • @bensmarzynski8757
    @bensmarzynski8757 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    He was out, but the announcers made it sound like a no brainer when it was a very close play. The catcher was in his rights blocking the plate (as, unlike the announcers said, he had the ball before the runner reached the plate. Even tho the runner arrived at the plate before he was tagged, determining whether he actually touched the base is a tough call. You can see from the overhead view that his legs hover over the plate, but his feet don’t make contact until half a frame before the catcher touches him. These announcers are the real villains.

    Solid call. Glove touched the runners leg before the runner contacted the plate. (1:53, at .25 speed) The catcher did not illegally block the plate, either. He was set up in front of the plate (towards the pitcher's mound), and had the ball before contact was made.

    I'm a Phillies fan... the catcher was not improperly blocking the plate... you can see he changes positions in order to catch the throw... and whatever position he winds up in to catch the throw, he's entitled to be there, even if he's in the runner's way before the ball gets there. Then, after catching the throw, the catcher leans into the runner's path to tag him... also perfectly legal. All that said, it looked to me that the runner was safe.

    One more reason which proves what I said all along as being right. Why have instant replay? It holds up the game & as we all saw here, it STILL didn't get the call right. Just let the players PLAY, & the umpires UMP.

    • @kevinmm20
      @kevinmm20 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +defiantone Why have instant replay? Of course it isn't perfect, but the vast majority of the time, it gets the call correct. I certainly care more about the call being correct and therefore making it harder to win or lose on a bad call.. Especially in something like a world series game

    • @defiantone8556
      @defiantone8556 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, & while we're at it, lets replace the players with robots. The game was invented by humans & IMO that's who should decide it. That's what's wrong with baseball. They wanna make it into something nothing's not. And that's perfect. They can take the instant replay & shove it.

    • @kevinmm20
      @kevinmm20 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      defiantone Because we want to give each team a chance to contest a few plays a game, you think we may as well jump to robots playing the game? It was invented by humans to PLAY. Ideally, an umpire would get every call correct. But they don't and having a few instant replays a game makes for a more accurately called game and makes it harder for teams to win on bullshit calls. I don't get what your issue is with replay.

    • @defiantone8556
      @defiantone8556 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      kmm I don't have an issue with anything & no an umpire would NOT get every call right, because no human is perfect. All the more reason why baseball don't need the instant replay. And while I too, would like to see all the calls be right, as proved by even instant replay, that's not always the case. Gee, kinda like it wasn't always the case BEFORE instant replay came along. Nuff said.

    • @kevinmm20
      @kevinmm20 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      defiantone The reason we don't need replay is because a human is imperfect? That's the exact reason we need it. Why are you against replay if you would like to see all calls be correct? Replay get's you closer to that.

    This play wasn't clear in any way shape or form. To me he looks safe at first but then when you go back and look at it you realize the plate was blocked. The tag got to him before he got to the plate. The only argument I give merit to is that d"Arnaud blocked the plate early. Then call him safe. I don't see any evidence on any of those views that says anything definitive.
