I haven't played War3 in a while, with the while blizzard situation leaving a bad taste in my mouth. But I've been hype for Age4 ever since the first videos and to hear you're playing it now is just...great man. This game is catching the attention of all kinds of RTS players, you, SC2 players, Age2 and Age 3 players...Here's to an RTS renaissance!
Grubby. I put my pride aside and followed your basic build order. I just single handedly won a 4v4 game for my team, my allies were good, but they just walled off and I went alone on the offensive. I used some tricks of my own. But following your basic instructions is an immense help.
Grubby, your WC3 "Bloody Beginner" videos were very helpful for me, when I recently got back into the game (since 2004). I'm thinking to get AoE4 as well (I played the original two first games) and am very glad you put the time and effort into these build guides as well. Cheers!
you forgot to explain the golden gate mechanic: you get a limited amount of trade actions over time but you ALWAYS trade +150 ressources for -100 gold OR +150 gold for -100 ressources. So you get ressources out of thin air. Thats super nice to either 1) balance your eco 2) pump those early knights 3) get early 2nd/3rd TC or 4) jump to castle age. However, you have to be aware of the number of allowed actions still left.
The best part of your build orders is the explanation part. I really like understand the rationale behind allocating villagers and what we are trying to achieve. Thank you!
Apparently there's another trick for killing boars. Find a boar, build an Outpost or Wooden Fort next to it and garrison some units inside. Have any unit attack the boar, then run the unit around the Outpost or garrison inside. The boar won't likely be able to kill this defensive structure before you can take it down, provided one has enough units garrisoned. As for Rus doing this, ideally the boar would be close enough to some trees to pair a Hunting Cabin with the build. With the Wooden Fort there too, you suddenly have a nice resource base to work off of! :)
"try to make sure the hunting cabin covers as much trees as possible" - placing it on the corners is the worst choice mate ;) I always use the first two loads of golden gate to get 300 stone for my 2nd TC, after many Rus matches I feel its the most consistent way online in 1v1 and 2v2's
Have you considered gathering the deer meat also? It’s quite powerful as you can put hunted meat right next to the town center. Villagers gather faster from deer, they are 350 food each. With HRE speed and carry buff I was able to insert 1800 food per minute compared to other players who were at 500 food from 8-10 farms at that time. A plus is that those villagers can gather gold and stone while they wait for the meat to arrive. While they gather meat they are also safe right to the town center.
I think it's very risky on most maps because they can be small and if oppo just goes like Royal Cav + Archer, there's no chance to hold after going for 275 gold food mid-early game upgrade

Mine version probably slower though ;) One request for upcoming videos: maybe play the opening first and then narrate over the replay It was a little hard to follow with half-finished sentences, lots of uhs and pauses when you have to micro, etc.
I usually get professional scouts fairly quickly after ageing up. Allows me to bring back the Deer and farm under the TC and stay safe for a long time. It is especially strong with the rus since you already have 3 scouts from your early game.
I do that as well, but I often find myself in a position where I can't micro enough to keep the carcass supply up and then my vills fall idle and I suddenly have to make a lot of farms. That can be rly awkward when things don't go as planned. It is still really really strong when it works however. I kill the deer with shift attack though, no way I can animation-stop-and-go shoot the deer with several scouts, it pains my hand just to watch Grubby do that.
Any tips defending the French feudal rush? Non stop royal knights+archer/spear and rams hitting around 5:30, with free +1 and faster feudal it’s very hard to stop and with little room for micro. Former master2 sc2 refuge here.
After hunting all the deer, should I prioritize getting the ability that let's me carry carasses upon hitting Feudal and then steal as many carcasses from the enemy as possible? Or is that not worth the hazzle? I find myself sometimes in an awkward spot when the deer eventually run out in mid game and I have to do farms because i can't keep up with the carcass supply. Should I just make farms earlier? Thanks in advance.
later you can kill boars with early knights, if dont feel comfortable to always presure early on with them directly, also you have prepared for a hunting cabin drop...
At 7:35 you switch the third explorer for rax in control group. Have you found a better way to control that explorer? Im using F2 instead right now but it feels clunky ^^;
scout control groups do get cluttered heading into the mid game. I eventually replace them with army and TC groups. Fortunately there's scout cycling hotkey built into the game. I set mine to ` (right next to the numbers). I use 1,2, and 4, in the beginning to have more control, then I just cycle through them with ` once those control groups get replaced by army
How exactly do you increase the scout attack speed with the "stop hit and run" micro? I don't fully understand, do you just alternate attack and move click, moving as soon as you see the scout's arrow release, or do you press S to animation cancel or something? Any tips would be appreciated :) Thank you for all the amazing guides Grubby!
This video is great and I've watched it four times now. Quick question, now that scouts can't use micro to kill faster, is this still the best way to do things? Not sure if that changes your ideas on the build. I've just been shift-clicking now since that's all we can do.
just lure wolfs into your towncenter. Professional scouts or and fast second towncenter with landmarktrading is meta at the moment. So this not not up to date, at least from feudal onwards
Against Mongols with Mangudais, you need regular Archers, as well as one or two Wooden Outpost to protect villagers. Against Mongol with Age 3 rush and Trader Boom, you should expect Knights. These are best countered with a combination of Spears and Crossbowmen as well as some tanks like Men at Arms. You can transition into Springalds as well, if you have the army to protect them. These do good damage in chokes to Melee units, and are good for picking off evasive Mangudais.

Not a very specific guide for us. No details on how many villagers should be on what resources, how many should be used to age up. When we should expand or push. I get that these things depend on the game. But I would have liked a bit more effort put into the guide.

Funny to see this vid: I main Rus and came down to nearly the same META (3 scouts, 0 vils on gold). I like to delay my hunting cabin 2 villagers in (7-1 split) and hope to get a hunting spot near a forest (hunting gathers food faster). but that kinda delays my second and third scout and my golden gate for 1 minute , which could turn out to be crucial for high tier games... will look into this! finding META is so fun!

Rus’ and “Russia”, are in many ways like the Roman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, one took the name of the other, despite being a completely different entity, in order to tie itself to the glory and history of the other. Just like HRE was actually Germany, Russia is actually Muscovy, despite their best attempts to convince everybody otherwise. Germany used to call itself the Holy Roman Empire, that didn’t mean they became the Romans, and all of a sudden had a right to claim whole of Italy and its history, but yet, that’s exactly what “Russia” did with Rus’-Ukraine, and everyone eventually sort of went with it. Which is a horrible injustice!
i mean its nice, but you played against an AI so it would be way way way more understandable, if you haven't managed your scouts. i understand this is important, but to follow around your jumping screen, its super hard to follow along.
I've had more trouble with single TC because if they expand first the pressure is on you do get damage done, which can be hard to do without losing too many units

Too costly in wood for rus i would say. Wooden fort is 175 wood, which is a lot early on

I like 7 professional scouts as rus. Allows me to quickly get deer from all over the map and back to my tc

I need to start using the “next scout” hotkey, it exists. I already use it for monks

Chopping trees doesnt remove the bonus, it's snapshot from when it was placed

With a wolf, you alternate move & attack move. For deer you need to move & right click because they are neutral

cause it's the first big RTS since starcraft 2, players from aoe2, sc2, wc3 are playing aoe4 because of that, maybe from other games too
