The Evolution of the Big Man & Greatest Game Show Ever? | The Dan LeBatard Show with Stugotz

  • Dan is starting to feel the effects of the Writers Strike, but Mike is grateful to finally have some time to catch up on all the old shows he's missed. The crew debates the greatest Game Show of all-time with the news of Pat Sajak's retirement from Wheel of Fortune and examines why Family Feud is still thriving. Then, Greg Cote is obsessed with the World's Dirtiest Man, and Jack Grealish has a more normal response to winning a title than Nikola Jokic. Plus, why hasn't the USA caught up to Europe in the evolution of the do-it-all big man in the NBA?

Do these guys not know that every US born big man practices dribbling & shooting threes? Did they forget about KD & Chris Bosh? Every 6'10" power forward during Dirk's era, like CWebb, KG, Tim D & even Barkley could shoot & dribble like Dirk, but American coaches hated when big men dribbled or got the rebound & pushed the ball. I was a pretty good player back in my day in the 90s & early 2000s. I'm 6'4" & on some teams I played center & on some teams I played point. The teams I played center on, the coaches would not allow me to get the rebound & push the ball even though I was faster & had better handles & play making skills than the PG. Centers, no matter how skilled they were, just weren't allowed by coaches to be play makers & ball handlers. You'd think more KDs & Dirks would come from the US, but US coaches are still stuck in the big man does big man things & little guys do little guy things. But somehow, they allow the Euros/foreign players to play positionless basketball, while forcing US players to play a specific position. It's US coaching that has to change, not the players. CWebb mentioned in an interview that coaches just wouldn't allow him to dribble or make plays at the level that he could. I believe that because when I was in college playing any position other than PG I wasn't allowed to make plays or dribble either. I've seen it happen 1st hand to other guys with guard skills but weren't playing in guard positions in the US. When I played in Germany it was a whole different thing from a coaching standpoint.

Not to get lost in this discussion about how the US develops more Jokic-style players is how to replicate his thought process. A consistent theme among the basketball analysts I've heard is them raving about his decision-making and always making the right play as the situation demands it. Not to simplify it, but I envision it comes from Jokic watching hours of video and the defensive schemes that coaches are showing him, and him building good chemistry w/ everyone on the team.
This leads to maybe an even larger issue which is developing players to have Jokic's work ethic. Jokic recently talking about how we should "never bet against the fat kid" is a testament to the work he's put in over the past eight years to be the MVP-quality player he is today. Of course, work ethic is a quality that's always been foundational to success, but in the case of a 6'11", 285-pound guy who used to drink liters of cola each day and who is riding a wave of success and accolades, it seems to have an even stronger degree of influence than someone who started a college or NBA career in better shape.

Fwiw, Shaq has said repeatedly that he wanted to shoot and he asked his coaches to teach him and to let him try to add it to his game, but they wouldn't let him.
Meanwhile, that's been the way it works in eastern Europe for years. Obviously jokic is the best, but all the big guys who come out of there have some amount of handling and shooting skill - there was actually an article about this a few months ago

    • @Gnofg
      @Gnofg 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

We have become Euro basketball. Live by the jump shot die by the jump shot .which amounts to an unentertaining game. As great as Jokic is offensively he is a really bad defensive player and a terrible jumper. He offers no resistance at the rim.
I was watching the 30 for 30 on Bill Walton. Athletically, he is so far superior than Jokic and was an excellent leaper. There was one highlight where he dribbled the ball the length of the court .
The quality of play and movement without the ball reminded us older people why we watched the game .Furthermore Dr. J is athletic as anyone playing today.
Jokic bullies lot's of today's current players. Could he do that against Walton who is taller than Jokic? That would be interesting.
The three point line has made the game out of balance. The best example of that is pulling up for a 3 pointer on a fast break.
Fast breaks run right should be a 90% completion rate. In 100 attempts that would be 180 points. In 100 three point attempts on a fast break you would have to hit 60% to equal that. I doubt you would hit 60%.

Veep is great!!! Will make you appreciate all the great writing you’re missing by the time you catch up with it. Writers are right to strike now, and are setting an example in the industry. This is last stand territory whether people know or like it, and it’s important that they maintain the comparatively very small cost of the creative talent vs the financial success of the content they produce.
Your idea of what creatives are paid is almost guaranteed based on an outdated model in a world that no longer exists, especially in narrative film and television with the improper practice of streaming shows getting away with budget requirements intended for micro and up and coming projects vs the whale industry propping businesses.
There’s a lot looking like how it did in Hollywood during the last bust/the birth of new Hollywood. I think the second part already happened on TH-cam, and in the process created it’s own separate economy. If you don’t want non stop bland, lowest cost highest return content, support creators in the opportunities they’re getting now and into the future.

I think that the success of the Denver Nuggets is related to coach Michael Malone, who recognized Jokic's talent but at the same time experimented a lot. I think today's NBA coaches lack that because they are afraid to experiment.Another thing is that you have to give the players maximum freedom in order to see their potential. And then you build a team around what they are capable of doing and not give them a role that doesn't use their full potential.
And here, in my opinion, Michael Malone is the best coach in the NBA, not because he won the championship, but because he allowed the players to develop their potential.

As great as Jokic is on offense he is not a very good defensive player. He offers no resistance at the rim. I watched the 30 for 30 on Bill Walton last night. He was great at all phases of the game as was a great athlete. I wonder what Jokic would have done with someone who is 2 inches taller than him and was able to beat McHale in a one on one game who literally could out jump Jokic on every shot he took.

If you watch the 30 for 30 Walton takes a rebound coast to coast like Jokic does. Walton was a PG until 10th grade. At all aspects of the game he is about as good as there ever was. He was a great shot blocker and his outlet was as good as Unseld. Jokic is a really terrible defensive player.

No, his issues with his business come from him trying to rebel against conservative Cubans and the ills of capitalism. What he doesn't see is that he's guilty of the same kind of croney capitalism that he would profess to hate. His CEO keeps failing up, even after a drug scandal, and he hires nothing but friends and family. Those things make a business harder to run. It's one of the few things Domonique repeats that I agree with. He would fire a lot of people because Dan wants to build an entertainment empire on friends and family, and for it to always feel like a party with friends and family.
