Now, let's get to the heart of the matter.
I've spent my life on the waters, dedicated to sustainable fishing practices that ensure our lobster populations thrive for generations. But today, I'm on a mission unlike any other. In Miami, I discovered a protected Maine lobster, identified by a V-notch on its tail, indicating it's a breeding female and off-limits for catching. This lobster somehow ended up in a local restaurant, far from the Maine waters where she belongs.
With just 24 hours on the clock, I'm setting out to rescue this vital part of our marine ecosystem and face a series of legal, logistical, and unexpected challenges to bring her back to Maine. This video is a firsthand account of my race against time, navigating wildlife laws, transportation issues, and the ethical debates surrounding marine conservation.
Join me on this urgent mission, filled with obstacles but driven by a commitment to preserving our lobster populations for future generations. You'll get an insider's look into the life of a Maine lobsterman, the importance of sustainable fishing, and the lengths we'll go to protect our marine environment.
So, buckle up for a testament to conservation, sustainable practices, and the unbreakable bond between a lobsterman and the sea. Together, let's make this rescue mission a success.

Lobster: Heyyyy, fancy seeing you here. Last time I saw you, you pinched my butt, gave me a snack, and told me to go home.
😂 the irony of that.
Haa 😂
😂😂😂, so do I get a treat?
Hahaha 😂
😂
The level of care and concern you have for one lobster speaks volumes of your character. Freedom is now free.
The shot of you all walking into Walmart with a live lobster is priceless.
This just proves walmart security has a condescending attitude when they think a lobster is threatening. Security should do their job protecting people not harassing them for having a lobster.
I want to name Irene. No idea why. The name just popped in my head.
@@gerilynne1955 Walmart had to protect their shoppers from a potential "Deadliest Catch"
Tommy you’re a jerk!!
Probably not the strangest thing to walk in the door that day considering it was a Walmart after all.
When we found this girl in Miami we where shocked and had to do the right thing and buy her. And honestly I think she enjoy seeing Miami.
Jeremy, you guys are so damned awesome! I just can't stand it! Thanks for sharing Freedom's adventure. You worked hard for her. ❤😔
@dominique217 thanks for following the adventures 😊
That was an awesome effort you guys gave it! Too and she didn’t make it, but damn you tried right!? Well done for sure.
That lobster must have wanted a warm vacation
You guys should have gone right down to the old port in Portland harbor an let her get some fresh water after a trip like that
Their gills - located above the roots of their legs - are feather-like. When submerged in the buoyant seawater these feathers lift up and spread out, giving them a lot of surface area with which to exchange oxygen. Out of the water, these feathers lay on top of each other and compress, essentially suffocating the animal...this is OK for tidal changes of a few hours twice a day; however, for longer periods this reduced oxygen exchange causes organ damage. Keeping their exoskeletons moist is not enough...their insides dry out and get starved of oxygen. This makes long-term survival (more than a day or few) unlikely. Shipping a lobster across the country can have it arrive alive, but it's unlikely they would live beyond a few days even if immediately put back in seawater. I've spent a few years keeping lobsters, blue, dungeness, hermit and jonah crabs and have come to learn this. Spiny lobsters (warm water) never leave the ocean naturally and thus do even worse.
Interesting! Thank you!
Good information--knowledge is power!
ayuh...
Thank you! I've tried to learn how they breathe out of water and thus survive to even be in lobster tanks at the store. You are the first to explain their gills clearly.
Is there a difference in salinity between the cold and warm sea water? I mean, if they had gotten a bucket of the water there at the beach, put it in the freezer for an hour, then poured it in her tank for the overnight fridge stay, could that have extended her "grace time" out of the water during the flight? Of course, there is no way of knowing if she was ever upside down, but assuming the handling wasn't an issue, could that have bought her more time?
Jacob reading a bedtime story to Freedom before he tucks her into bed, in the refrigerator, sweetest scene evah!
So I sat next to someone with an emotional support iguana, but no lobster? Rather sit next to the well behaved rescue lobster.
Iguanas are notorious for being aggressive. It’s wild they let one on a flight next to other passengers
What airline?
They may be in the wild but i have 2 and there just like puppies @@archgirl7797
I never thought I would cry over a lobster. RIP Freedom
Me neither. Ugh ❤
Never Forget, She was DELICIOUS?
This is honestly such a heartwarming video. The fact you purely felt the need to try save this lobster and go through all the effort. I think even if it wasn’t documented you would still try save it.
Shame about the outcome, but you guys have it it’s best chance and it really is a joy to watch someone so passionate about the life they live. RIP freedom.
Dr. Jacob Knowles Lobster DoLittle! I thought I was the only one that talked to critters!! Of course I knew I had fabulous company!!! Claw rubber bands off to you Mr. Knowles. You are the sweetest! So is your friend and "copilot" Jeremy - here's to Freedom.
Jacob, you deserve the best in life for being the type of person that everyone should aspire to be. A 5th generation lobster fisherman with a successful You Tube channel. Kudos to you. In my opinion, Maine is a wonderful state and especially Portland.
Awwwww Jacob thank you and your crew for rescuing Freedom. At least she died on her home soil. R.I.P Freedom 🦞
Walmart security had to protect people from the deadly Lobster!
They literally throw most check on bags as far as they can.
SPOILER ALERT...
It just got ruined 🫤
You wouldn't wanna spoil it for anyone else would you?
I'm literally here crying. I just spent the night up nursing my ferret after having a seizure and spending the day at the vet. I was NOT emotionally ready for this. But i truly appreciate and respect your attempt to rescue her. She should have never been captured to begin with. Rest in Peace Freedom. 🤍🕊🫶🏽
America Airlines needs to change their policy for lobsters.
American Airlines needs to change a lot of things. They barely allow live humans on board.
I had live Maine lobsters shipped to Florida several times. I don't recall the company but they were in Brewer Maine. All of the lobsters arrived alive and quite spunky. You might check with a company there and find out what the secret is, that way you could be ready for the next rescue. Also don't be surprised if viewers who encounter breeders being sold outside of Maine, find out how to ship them back home and send them your way for releasing.
aww RIP Freedom
Reading Freedom a bedtime story is priceless...so sorry for the loss of Freedom. It was worth the effort and you tried your best.
Oh, Jacob and Jeremy, thank you for your effort in saving Freedom!! Not the outcome we wanted, but you brought her home to rest. RIP, Freedom! 🥺😭🥹🫡🥰🫶🏾💜🙏🏽 God bless you all!! 🙏🏽 🫶🏾💜
Luke McFadden just posted a video of him carrying-on a duffel of live Maryland crabs and flew them to Arkansas. I think he flew American. It’s weird that y’all had such different results.
I loved the seatbelt and bedtime story so much! ❤
Probably the difference of asking for forgiveness vs permission
I came home from florida with a huge cooler full of live oysters.
A good friend and seafood shipper helped me make sure they were sealed and safe.
We didnt find any bad ones once i got back home. I doubt i could get them by security now tho. This was back in the 80s.
My dad was ecstatic lol we ate a bunch then my mom made him oyster stew
Food vs pet. Don’t say a food item is a pet, even if you aren’t planning on eating it.
This is your absolute best lobster video yet! When you read the little lobster a good night story PRICELESS! ❤
I am so sad to hear that Freedom passed before being freed. You did make an amazing effort between the two of you to keep her alive, to the best of what you knew. With all the information coming in in the comments here, I think you would do things differently next time and perhaps find a way to keep her in seawater more of the time. And definitely pick another airline!
Thank you so much for your humane and gentle effort. This was a great video.
You should have told the woman from the airline that it was an emotional support animal.
A lot of airlines have stopped doing that, and honestly, I don't blame them
It wouldn't have been closer to the truth.
😂
You have to have papers
Make a little vest with a patch. "It can detect when my blood sugar is dangerously low."
You guys are such good eggs. Thank you for trying to save her life ❤
Valiant effort despite losing her. Bravo for holding to your conservation practices!
You tried so hard and went through so much with her. This was very sad.😢 R.I.P. Freedom🦞
Good attempt! I hope the therapy helped! Well, who knows how long she was in captivity... getting weaker every day with those elastics causing her claws to stay closed unnaturally. Plus the trauma of the initial journey all the way down there.... Well I appreciate you treating the lobster with respect as a living creature! Well produced and highly creative video!
Your commitment to the lobster population is unmatched - loved that you made this video and that you did what you could for Freedom - she had a better life because you were in it !! Rest in peace Freedom and that you for all you do !!!
I love all of your videos but this by far is my favorite! The funny creativity, and most importantly, the challenges you guys overcame to get this girl back here to Maine... You knocked it out of the park. Kudos and great job guys!
- From a coastal Mainer, born and raised.
RIP Freedom. You are with the lobster angels now. Thank you both for trying so hard to save her!
So sorry for your loss. Still, you get an A+ for trying to reunite Freedom with her home waters.
At least you still published the video, it was entertaining and funny!
I blame the airline, flying is such a hassle.
At least she made it home. Sorry she didn't get a chance to breed again. The struggle was real for you and the crew. You gave her the best day ever! She should have called to get her stress out.
20FEB2024 - FYI. To all interested. My brother used to be in charge of one of the largest lobster holding facilities in the food industry several years ago. He discovered that lobsters REQUIRE a minimum of one inch of circulating, aerated water above the highest point on their body. And now you know.
Jacob "you are my little ladybug, you brighten up my day".
Lobster "I'm @$#! dying!!!"
You guys went above and beyond. A true heart for the sea and its animals. Bless ya Freedom
Maybe it would have helped to go by an aquarium shop with a saltwater tank to let her regain strenght or maybe they'd have a solution for shipping 🤔
I hated liking this because I'm sad for Miss Freedom - but you guys did your best! I'm a reptile person and it always twigs me out with shipping but they have a lot better chance (being air breathers and all) In any case you did good by her!
Feeling sad for this little lady, was hoping for a better outcome. You guys were great! You made her last day very memorable.
Find someone who loves you as much as this man loves lobsters 💝
**Take my phone**
The Lobster: remove the rubber!!!
We will miss you freedom..
So glad BetterHelp would give a therapist to a lobster
This is seriously the most unusual thing i have ever watched
Thank you for trying to get her home and safe,
I can’t believe that I started crying, but I did. RIP Freedom ❤
Dude, I was SO invested in this story! RIP Freedom 🦂
Oh man, we were routing for freedom! Great effort!
WOW! Better Help must charge a lot for their service to afford to sponsor travel & luxury accommodations! I'd love to use them; but, now I am very cautious❤❤❤❤...
@@patriciasmith2827 I'm curious what you mean ?
Nothing bad, I'm just curious 🤔 🫣
OMGosh; the lobster in her seatbelt is priceless! 🤎😂😂😂
This has got to be the BEST VIDEO EVER💯💯💯💯. This is true dedication
Hey, Freedom knows *now* how hard you tried to help her. Thank you so much for your compassion.
didnt expect to be crying over freedom the lobster this monday evening but here we are😭 yall are such lovely humans, thank u for giving her a last day worth a lifetime 😔♥️
Thank you, Jacob and Jeremy for trying to save this lobster. You are awesome!!!!! AND KIND!!!!!!!
Thank you for posting this lovely story even though it didn't have the storybook ending we all wished for. Commendable effort--You did everything that you could.💔😢
From a true Yankee, I cried at the end of this video. You guys are amazing people.
Wow. What a roller-coaster of emotions, Sorry about the outcome. Gotta say, you and your crew are made for this kinda content, though! Could watch it all day, keep them coming!
Jacob i think Freedom was the happiest Lobster and died happy as well you brought her home and that alone is the best way for a person or a animal to go she died on her own time and not on a pots tempature time u did a amazing job were all proud of you man
Thanks for being so humane
🤣The wobble of the cooler as it first was put onto the conveyor belt took away all hope for me.
A lobster rescue! Never thought i'd see another one after Leon. Great eye on catching the notch on her tail, even though it was mostly gone. What a funny video to see everything from her perspective! I'm so sorry it didn't work out as ya'll hoped, but you sure tried!
You guys are so awesome. As a fisherman myself I totally love your steadfast dedication to protecting the main lobster.
It seems like the lobster/fisherman relationship is so unique. You technically hunt them, but also care about them so much that youput the effort into rescuing a breeder from a tank in Miami.
A+++ for effort. Keep doing what you do to help lobsters in need and to maintain a healthy environment/industry for years to come. You’re Awesome! 💚
A valiant effort Sirs! I'm sure Freedom is looking down on you and smiling in gratitude for your efforts.
Should have gone to a courier. Paid them to write a way bill and declaration of contents . Chances are they would have taken it as luggage . I was a courier for 10 years and sent lots of things by air for next day delivery.
How does this work? It sounds very interesting and I have never heard of it as a possibility.
@@Captain.Spaghetti : Simple, courier verifies the the package, the way bill and declaration verifies what it is . Some customers already have a a TSA # . And is still x-rayed unless it is film . It is still hard to do this . Being its honest it would be easier. Other than that no way . Could also have done UPS , FED - X next day AM air . And would beat you home .
@@SMR3663UPS also tosses packages around.
Is there a reason you didn’t put her in water before the trip? Wouldn’t that have helped her survivability?
Wondering the same thing…
I'm glad Freedom at least made it back to Maine.😢 RIP
I would love to see a collaboration with Leon the lobster.
well I'm completely devastated...
I’m so sorry to hear she passed.
Thank you for being you ❤RIP Freedom ❤At least she got to see the ocean 🌊 again and she didn’t get eaten 🦞
Wow, I am a 60-year-old Scot who cries at nothing(apart from losing to England) and there is definitely moistureRIP young Crustation. Great idea for a show
Zoolander reference bonus! ❤
Poor Freedom. I do appreciate that y’all tried to get her home safe. This has been a harrowing adventure. 😢 RIP Freedom.
Hey Jacob; What a Bummer! 😥🦞 FREEDOM 🌹🙏🏿
You did your hardest to bring her home. You should feel proud for your hard work!
You are simply awesome. Keep it up.
Spreading the knowledge and making the effort counts for a lot
Excellent video until the end. RIP Freedom.
You did the very best you could. And no one else would have done a thing but heat water. You both are angels 😇😇😇
Oh sorry she didn’t make it Jacob but hey you defo went out your way and tried your best xx❤❤❤
You could have maybe sent it on a different plane all together. Like the ones that send live fish and other animals to pet stores.
I'm so sorry. We knew her for only a short time, but she touched all of us in that short time. RIP Freedom. ❤️🥺😢
The interesting bit for me was that Jacob did not want to be the one buying her due to his commercial licence.
Reading a bedtime story to Freedom melted my heart, too cute ❤
Dude you're killing me. So sorry she didn't make it. Better luck next time ❤
Thankyou for sharing this story, even tho freedom didn’t make it back to the ocean. You are a kind man and very entertaining to watch.
In the 70’s my Father returned from business trips with a cardboard “tote” with live lobsters on an ice pack. The tote was a carry-on… on a DC-3, usually.
… ah, the days before TSA & the 9/11 attacks.
You’re so goofy! I love watching your videos! I get a big kick out of them. I don’t eat lobster, but hey, I do enjoy your videos.
Lobster in a seatbelt. 🤣😂🤣😂
I would've gone the lying route and put the lobster in my duffel bag. You live and you learn, and you tried your best.
Best video ever.
. . . Great effort ❤
Thank you Jacob,for being compassionate.
I,think you are pretty awesome.
I'm, learning new things -
pretty cool 😍😍😍😍!
Click clack, front and back. Safty first.😂 the seatbelt.
God, what a sad video for freedom. I can’t believe all the work that you went through and she couldn’t hang on. All the hearts in Arizona go out for you freedom❤❤❤
As soon as she was in your hands...she was free.
💜
Next time buddy, use Public relations departments. Trust me.
💜🇨🇦
You guys are so amazing and respectful ❤❤❤❤❤
You should come to New Bedford Massachusetts
I went to NB Voc tech. Loved that school.
"Better help is there for you." (Pets the lobster) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🥰 I would almost dial up some therapy just for that one moment.
Oooo Luke McFadden just took a half bushel of blue crab, carry on, to friends in Arkansas. Hes a crabber from MD. He had an interesting time of it 😅
Good advice for a 5th generation lobster fisherman.
Jacob I am so so sorry. Its shows what a caring nature you have..... to be on a trip see a 'punched' lobster and try to get her home 🥲Proving other fishermen out there dont give a damn if they are punched or not..... they catch and sell!! You and your crew are 'special' fishhermen! Well at least she wasn't in that hot weather and you did your very best... Love t o you and your family xx
Epic video!!!!! Love it, thanks for sharing, I appreciate it!
Aww... Freedom. I was rooting for you! Soooo close...
I'm curious why you didn't get some sea water to submerge her in, while she was in the fridge?
