James Brown performs "Prisoner of Love" to a live audience on the TAMI Show.
James Brown was influenced by the crossover success of Ray Charles and began to perform pop standards. "Prisoner of Love" was his first Top 20 single.
The TAMI Show is a 1964 concert that included performances by numerous popular rock and roll and R&B musicians from the United States and England. TAMI stood for both "Teenage Awards Music International" and "Teen Age Music International". The concert was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 28 and 29, 1964. Free tickets were distributed to local high school students. The best footage from each of the two concert dates was edited into the film, which was released on December 29, 1964. The TAMI Show is particularly well known for James Brown's performance featuring his legendary dance moves and explosive energy.
    Video transcript:
Alone from night to night you'll find me. Too weak to break the chains that bind me. I need no shackles to remind me. I'm just a prisoner, don't let me be a prisoner. For one command I stand and wait now. From one who's master of my fate now. I can't escape for it's too late now. I'm just a prisoner, don't let me be a prisoner. What's the good of my caring if someone is sharing those arms but not with me. Although she has another and I can't have another for I, I'm not free. She's in my dreams, awake or sleeping. Upon my knees to her, I'm creeping. My very life, my life is in her keeping. I'm just a prisoner, don't let me be a prisoner. (Prisoner of love). You made me a prisoner. (Prisoner of love). And you made me love you. (Prisoner of love). Take your shackles of love and go away. (Prisoner of love). 'Cause I love you so much now. Want you so bad. Want you so bad. You, you, you. You made me a prisoner.

The drummer played to the movements of James. He was hitting hard on the one. That's Melvin Parker on the drums, Maceo Parker ' s brother.

The FAMOUS FLAMES’ background harmonies are TIGHT…and RIGHT ON POINT !!
And notice how LLOYD is singing just a step away from BOBBY BYRD and BOBBY BENNETT…BUT at the SAME INSTANT that JAMES DROPS TO HIS KNEES…LLOYD immediately SLIDES IN right NEXT to the OTHER FLAMES,without missing a BEAT…and JOINS The OTHER FLAMES in the MOVES and HARMONIES!!
This is still another reason why JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES wereTHE MOST EXPLOSIVE GROUP IN R&B HISTORY…with POWER and PRECISION that the OTHER GROUPS just couldn’t TOUCH !!

The Famous Flames *(Bobby Byrd, Bobby Bennett, and Lloyd Stallworth)* were inducted into The ROCK and ROLL HALL of FAME IN 2012. The Hall of Fame admitted their error, and said that THE FLAMES SHOULD HAVE been Inducted with JAMES BROWN back in 1986 . They were the Original singing group with whom James Brown first became famous. HE was a Famous Flame TOO !!! It's HIGH TIME that people stopped IGNORING The FLAMES...and started giving them their PROPS !!! *UPDATE* The *FAMOUS FLAMES* were just inducted into the *2020 Class* of *The National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame* , being inducted some *SEVEN YEARS* after the induction of their Lead Singer, *JAMES BROWN* .

My uncle said he got a chance to meet James Brown once in nineteen sixty-four. Him and a friend of his were trying to drink a fifth of wine that they slipped into one of his concerts. Some how they got back stage and ran into James Brown. Said he really gave them a good talking to about the wine they were drinking. His whole conversation was about education and them staying out of trouble. Told them to enjoy the show and that he said they did.

JAMES BROWN was NOT a "solo artist" back in 1964...despite what the media and JB fanboys would have you believe . He was merely the LEAD SINGER of THE FAMOUS FLAMES. They were NOT simply "backups" for him . They were all a part of the SAME GROUP. The ROCK and ROLL HALL OF FAME recognized this...and that is why THE FAMOUS FLAMES were retroactively and automatically inducted into the R&R HOF alongside JAMES BROWN in 2012...because they SHOULD have been inducted with HIM back in 1986 !!!

williamg2552 .....Who cares man, there is only one James Brown. Find 1,000 Flames and you'll never replicate Mr. James Brown. If there was never a James Brown, chances are there never would have been any flames inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If one of the Flames could hold a candle to James Brown, don't you think we would have heard of him or that because of his talent, he would've become an icon like James Brown did? And Maceo (sp?) and Bobby Bland only made names for themselves cause James called their names out in a James Brown song or introduced them to the crowd. They were talented but a lot of people are, but they are not James Brown. Sorry.

The Flames were a SINGING GROUP...NOT backup musicians .If you don't know THAT, then YOU are the one who needs to brush up on his history. 2) If not for Bobby Byrd and The Famous Flames , you would have never even heard of James Brown. He would still have been rotting in prison on an 8-16 year stretch for Robbery.Bobby Byrd's family got him out of prison , got him a home (with them) and steady work. And Bobby put him in the Flames . And he paid Bobby back by stiffing him and the other Flames (Bobby Bennett, Johnny Terry, and Lloyd Stallworth) out of MILLIONS of dollars in unpaid record royalties , songwriting royalties, and live performance fees. (THAT lawsuit is STILL going on in the courts) . That's GRATITUDE for you !!

This “GODFATHER OF SOUL” Title has GOT TO GO. In the Fifties & Sixties, NOBODY called him that. In OUR HEYDAY, James Brown was called…
    “MISTER DYNAMITE!!”

    It's all true.
And I battle through the night.
    My head's buzzing, there's quite a crowd.
And my poor heart's beating barely
due to all the stuff I've downed.

He was a bit hoarse. By then his voice had been compromised by a combination of screaming, and overindulgence of his vices, cigarettes and alcohol being the main culprits. In the late 1950s and early '60s he sounded like a nightingale.

      m. saint James Brown wouldn't touch alcohol or drugs at that time, in the late years of his life was the time he did drugs prior to his son teddy brown dying in a car accident. when he worked with boots Collins and his boys, he fined them for being neAr ciggarettes
