I always liked the funky designs of these. They never had to be too realistic or based off anything which is why they're fun. I've wanted to do 9V lego trains but i don't think i could justify getting into another train system. Thanks for the in depth video!
Sure thing! The main issue with 9v is track, I've been very lucky with the deals I've found over time. (spoiler alert 😁) In an upcoming haul video I got two 9v motors, the speed regulator and a good amount of track for just over $100. I've kept my eye out for good deals on dozens of sites for almost a decade at this point 😅
This is gonna be a long comment but I've got a tip for doing stuff like this: Before going on and searching for parts, in the Studio app you can click the "Main" dropdown menu under the "Insert" button, then click "Config", "Choose a way to add new palette", and then "Import an official LEGO set". Over there type the number of the set you're building, and choose "As Palette". Click "Import", and then all the parts from the set will appear on the left sidebar. If you want to search outside the set again, click the same dropdown menu as in the beginning and choose "Main" again. Hope this helps!
That was an awesome video! Thank you for posting the Studio files. I used your design and going to try to make a double motor engine to help pull Christmas cars this year! Love the Freight Wagon video too!
One thing I like to do to create the handrails similar to those found on the My Own Train cabins is replacing the stacks of the 1x1 with bar (2921) with either 1x1x3 with 2 clips (60583) or 2 1x1 with clips (60475) and a normal 1x1 brick (3005) in the middle. I then replace the bar itself with a lightsaber blade (30374) or even the train track ties (bb0219) that come with any set with track! Of course the look is a bit different but it does open some other colour variety or options for detail/texture and may even make the assembly cheaper to acquire.
I've done that before as well as using headlight bricks and modified tile clips to hold the bars on my modified My Own Train passenger wagons. The old one by one pieces with the bar are getting hard to find for sure, depending on the color.
I can certainly see why Lego changed the mold, it is a more sturdy piece. With these trains I like the older version of the part, but if I get into making train crash videos maybe I should upgrade 😅
I'm very late to this video (because I'm only now looking into My Own Train), but I do have a bogey plate tip from someone who also has horrible luck with just dragging it over. I've found the best way for me to attach the bogey plates to the train base in Studio is to use the connect tool - you can click the anchor point in the middle of the bogey's peg and then the corresponding anchor in the train base.
I liked the tail end of the 9V train era when Lego had lost the plot in the early naughties yet they still produced some decent trains including World City trains, TTX, Santa Fe and my own train, I managed to piece all of them together but the My own train wagon with the blue windows is proving to be extremely difficult due to the blue modified bricks are exclusive to this set and the blue windows are often discoloured. The other one is the Factory train 10183 where most of the instructions for the other trains appear to have been lost.
It was a great time for sure! Good news on the 10183 alternate instructions front, a user has made instructions available for free on ReBrickable. I haven't followed these myself but they look to be accurate. rebrickable.com/users/scumpy/mocs/ A viewer of mine is actually in the process of building all 30 models at once. I showed some of his progress in my 10183 crocodile video
I would like to see the 3rd party stickers done with some different numbers. I am still struggling with Studio. The interface is so much different then what I was using before, and it does not feel intuitive to me. I even went as far as not installing the Ldraw system on my computer last time I rebuilt the computer. This has forced me to use Studio, but it has also all but stopped me from using any digital system. Maybe if I wait long enough the muscle memory from Ldraw will go away. LOL I guess I have just become to old and set in my ways. I have had the same problem with the bogie plate placement in Studio, very frustrating. I saw you where going to bricklink to find the parts, Studio does not even use the same grouping format for the parts. O Studio, you could be so much better... Your Discord is really great, lots of good people. I really should jump in more and join the discussion, but I do follow along for the most part. LOL
If you make vector drawing of the sheet with cutting lines, it's like 10min to put foil into uv printer and into ploter for cutting. Any small poligraphic studio with free time would do so for a beer probably.
Man, I’m glad I never got too deep into LDD. I tried it before I discovered Studio and found it to look and feel so outdated, I ended up never properly learning it. If I did, I would have had the same issues everyone is having with switching to it. @BrickTrains Studio does have a way to view parts via BL categories, so you can get started by switching their parts palette that way. You can see above the parts list that there’s a tab that says “BL Categories”. Good luck.
Thanks! I watch videos like this a million times in editing and by the end I feel like they are a bit boring 😅 Glad you found it interesting 😀. Also thanks for making an appearance 😊
It's uhh all explained in the video 😅, at least the method I used. The parts list is generated by Bricklink Studio (using the files in the description). The parts are purchased from Bricklink which is a Lego resale site. A bit like eBay except you put whatever individual parts you want in a cart. Bricklink sellers range from hobbyists selling sets / minifigures they don't want anymore all the way up to small to medium size businesses

That does help! I had no idea that was an option 😅

Nice! Glad to help 👍
Personally i would like to see Lego bring this back and have the build process allow you to have a battery box or even the 9v system
9V will never return, in fact we're lucky that LEGO makes any trains at all today.

the new part with side supports is actually more sturdy, cutting the stickers is the better solution

I'll have to try that out, thanks!
A good video and with good tips for building the locomotives.

Yeah different numbers would be great! I never used LDraw but I do use quite a few old pieces of software since it's what I'm used to 😅

Great video 👍👍👍
Thanks!
I need different numbers than 317. I wish one of the custom sticker sheets had different options
IKR, why has this not happened yet? 😅
Man your channel is so cool!!! You deserve more subscribers
Thanks 😀, after my video on the Lego train systems I've been gaining subscribers at an alarming rate 😅
@@BatteryPoweredBricks 🙂👍
I really like the 80's LEGO release of steam engines, but the "my own trains" series just don't click with me (the rolling stock however I like).
It's probably a large part nostalgia for me, I do like the 80's steam trains as well. Just a bit harder to piece together 😅
@@BatteryPoweredBricks Nostalgia have tendency to "guide" us 😅
How to you get a parts list, and where/how do you purchase all the parts to make them?

The link for the large locomotive instructions doesn't work for me. It takes me to the instructions for the small locomotive.
Fixed! Thank you
I’m just a guy who likes steam trains
All you need is Lego I assume
