    I will be honest I am learning to play the piano at the age of 60. I am retired now and have the time to put to it. I have always enjoyed music but never had the time or funds to work on it the way I wanted. I used to play the electric bass badly when I was 20 but raising a family and the expense of that kept me from continuing. I hope to follow you as mush as I can and your relaxed calm style is very appealing to me. Good luck with the series and I hope to send you other posts as time goes by. Rick M.

      Same situation Rick (61) but using a Motif xf to compose, very new to keyboard and find it very enjoyable training to use both hands at the same time. Never too late to learn and it is a good way to keep that brain alive :D

      Jazz Tutorial the chords and sequences you share are so beautiful I cried. Such evocative arrangements. Thank you for sharing.
      I didn’t see any chord progression formulas. Bit confused why say progressions in the title when it’s “lush chords in great sequence”. Did I miss a progression formula?

    • @SheilaghRiordan
      @SheilaghRiordan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much. These are lush and clean and beautiful. And I can do them (with a lot of effort!) I’m fairly new to all this, bit are these truly “progressions”? If they are would you please pretty please write the formulas for us so we heathens can apply it to any key?

    I really enjoyed that Julian; thanks so much. I gave up piano when I was 10 (60 years ago) and this has got me interested again!
    All that time ago I used to love listening to my parent's old jazz 78s; one in particular; Joe Sullivan playing Gin Mill Blues. I couldn't work out what the left hand was doing and my teacher wouldn't (or couldn't) help me, nor could anyone else. I gave up out of frustration. I recently found a recording on here and managed to get the sheet music from the U.S. It's way beyond me now, but I reckon this is within my grasp. Excellent!

    first video I'm watching from You and I'm totally blown away, wow! Somehow You combine the relaxed way of playing with a great educational piano lesson. Been playing almost every day for 10 years now, spending a lot of the time improvising and playing melodies/songs I've heard on the radio/TV/other. Keep the great job up man, I'm ready to sub!

    What's the theory behind the A7 around 4:40 resolving to C#min? It sounds great but wouldn't you expect it to resolve to D?

    • @whyitskeithd00d
      @whyitskeithd00d 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I'm kinda upset that nobody has replied to this within the past 8 months. I watch a lot of videos like this to learn new concepts, and you learn just as much from the comments sometimes as you do from the video.

    • @GabeKMusic
      @GabeKMusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well augmented chords are a sharp fifth. In the key of c#, a is the sharpened fifth so it adds tension. Just a theory, I don't actually know

    • @bigmoney923
      @bigmoney923 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My guess is that it's more of a voice leading / common tones thing than an actual resolution. Progressions like this in particular are called chromatic mediants. There's tons a videos that can explain that concept better than me

    • @aidenmoroney2632
      @aidenmoroney2632 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A7 contains the notes A, C#, E and G
      C#min(7) contains C#, E, G# and F#
      So in switching from A7 to C#min7 (or just C#min) we’re only changing 2 notes, and we’re just moving them each down a semitone. The chords being so close to each other is why they resolve nicely. This is true with most resolutions. We hear how close the A7 is to C#min and so we’re naturally pulled in that direction.

    would be nice to know which are the modes of those chords, because clearly there are modulations. For example, in the first progression, Cm7 is the relative minor of Eb, B maj 7 is the lydian mode of Gb, Bbm7 is the Dorian of Ab, A maj 7 is the lydian of E and C#m9 is probably the relative minor of E, but maybe it could be the Dorian of B? a modulation to B, I don't know. It would be nice to get a nice context of the chords from those progression, because it would help to create variations, melodies and a richer harmony. Is far more enlightening to know the modes. Yeah, in those progressions someone may argue that it is not necessary to say the modes, because it's pretty easy to find, but I say that if it's easy to someone so that must also be easy to find those progressions in the first place.
    About the second progression, I would like to suggest a little variation:
    Fm7, Db maj 7 (lydian from Ab), Cm7, Gm9 (maybe dorian from F), Ab maj 7 (lydian from Eb, the return)
    Using the Db maj 7 you avoid the repetition of the Ab maj 7, making the returning to C minor at Ab maj 7 even more strong and ethereal (?), the Gm9 is more beautiful (at least for me) because of the movement you do from C to G (fourth below) and the moviment from G to Ab (second minor), a down and up movement with nice intervals, and if Gm9 is a dorian of F, we will have two differences from Eb, the A and E, making a even more impactful modulation (for those who like it).
    Not saying this progression is better, I just enjoy more strong moviments (it sounds pretty for me) and I think maybe someone will like it too.
    anyway.. see ya~~
