@@rogerpercival5486 you are a douche or a tool (to go with your story), surprised your name isn’t Richard be more appropriate. Think this may be one of my first comments. Tim is an incredible player and I think a damn good teacher. Just don’t see any value in your comments.
I just had a piano lesson and told my teacher I didn't want to worry about Jazz until I've mastered triads. But this was the best ear training exercise ever. In the world. Fantastic.
Every rocker trying to get into jazz will benifit from this. Maby the best lesson on TH-cam. Great approach and thank you for taking the time to share your experience. It's sead that jazz is playing above the 7th. Unfortunately everyone learns different. There is something you have hit here that is smothered in most lessons. Great job and hope you're channel takes off!
@23:10 I'm applying your approach to rootless left hand voicings and that part about the 7-3-R becomes 3-7-R really was an "ah ha!" moment for me. Liked and subscribed.
AWESOME !! VERY Helpful. !! SO glad i came across your Channel. !! a MUCH needed theory lesson to improve my playing...VERY thankful for this MasterClass. !!
Excellent ideas & concepts. As a guitarist for 45+ years, I've been trying to play more piano lately. This is great to help expand my practice routine. Much appreciated!!! Thanks so much.
I love your approach and content, as a bass and keyboard player for many years I’ve always told students to listen for and find the 3rd and 7th, then the rest gets much easier! I’m excited to see you teaching this technique! Great Work..!!!
The major 6 is interesting to me because you have the root and the root of the parallel minor, same for the minor 6, you also play the root of the relative major. I would love to unlock more related to this. I'm really into bossa Nova and feel like the 6 chords are very bossa
Great lesson, Whalen ! I'am a rank beginner; but l have been intuiting that there must be some way to simplify all this. Thankyou for making it clear. 💜👍
6 basic chord qualities: I don't know why you introduced 6ths into the mix. Out of the blue and without explanation when we're dealing w 3rds and 7ths.
Sorry for that. I felt it was important to include them because the 6th is very much related to a 7th when we're talking about tonic major and tonic minor chords. Sorry if that was confusing.
This made me giggle. So which is it? Can you go the opposite way or is there no such thing as a circle of fourths? Because when you go the opposite way, it sure looks like a circle of fourths. "A rose by any other name," I guess.
I hope you find this one helpful. Enjoy!

That means a lot coming from you, brother!
You are a good teacher, suitable for all professions thats what I feel... Thank you ❤

Love this guy teaching, open my eyes to voicing I’ve tried to master for years❤

That 7th off the Tonic is fundamental … thank you for emphasising it! (a guitarist) 😧🤤
Thanks!
Thank you so much for this.
Challenging. I see the value in trying to master this. Thanks!
First principles explanation 👍

Just what i needed! Thank you 🙏
Agreed with the previous comment "Pure gold". My brain enjoys the lesson, while my ears struggle. Thank you so much for the great video.
This is excellent.
Great lesson, thanks for that. 😎 👍

what if it is a 6 , major 6, or minor 6...🎉
Check out the section on major and minor 6 in the video 👍🏻
Minor major seventh breaks my brain, is it major or minor
Both
Just remember, any chord with a b3 is minor. It's one option for the tonic chord in a minor key. Much more on this later.

Please define "voicings"
It simply means combining notes together to create a chord, ie a basic C triad "voicing" is C (1) E (3) G (5).
If you could have the keys light up so I can see for sure what you are fingering, that would be great. And slow down just a little bit.
Thank you for the feedback. I’ll add this in future videos!
You can go around the circle of fifths in either direction, but in classical training there is no such thing as the "circle of fourths."
Yeah, sometimes us “jazzers” refer to them both ways. Thanks for the feedback

I'd rather give it a name: circle of 4ths.
I find if something has a name,
it makes more sense to me.
Are you in Al's basement? Lots of wrong chords down there.
😂
