For a fastener you can also overlap the two pieces of blanket you want to "pin" together and place a rock underneath. From the side opposite the rock, wrap a short piece of cord around the rock such that you create a little bag out of the blanket which holds the rock and the cord ties the "bag" closed.
I do a lot of this with my great kilt. The bonus to the kilt is that it's already fastened around the waist, and when you need a blanket, your kilt doubles for that function.
Wow, fantastic advice! The match coat configuration looks like a much better way to have your blanket if you're working around a fire, food, or anything dirty. @@WilliamMyersmantisoutdoors William, does LT have plans to put the SOSPES back into production? I love the short handle and long blade... Or will I have to travel to his shop and make one?
Blanket pins go so freakin' far back in time. Made my first with my old Air Force blanket. They call the ancient ones broaches, but, these industrial looking blanket pins of yours are the most rugged I've seen, and thanks for showing it. Never saw one before. Good tips.
I noticed it took some time for you to get it on comfortably. One trick if you want to wear it with a belt : do it on the ground. It's like putting on an oldschool kilt (féileadh-mór). 1) Lay the blanket on the ground with the belt under it. 2) Lay down on it with your butt half-way and the edge of the blanket level with your knees or thereabouts. 3) Roll the blanket around your waist and belt it down. Adjust for comfort. Get up. You're now wearing a "blanket kilt" / "belted blanket cloak" I like the fibula idea though :)
I have great kilt that I bring hike camping with me on the long trail, it's my blanket / spare clothes if my shorts get destroyed... it's 100% pure wool , and 6yards long , it's kinda heavy and warm enough down to 40 when wearing fleece jacket and pants and wool socks. I also have an 8 yard long one , but that's too heavy. I currenty use the 6yard kilt as my blanket roll , with gear rolled up in it , then I have a small day pack I put food and bottle first aid kit , compass fire starter stuff , I would like to go to a haversack for food and water storage and have my knife first aid , sawyer mini and fire starter stuff on a couple belt pouches.
They probably had belt loops because laying down and folding the plaid every day would get old. But yes the great kilt is superior to pretty much any modern clothing!
That looks just like the Manduka Recycled Wool Blanket which are warm blankets too. It suspect wool blankets would help a Solo Escape bivy bag warm. thanks for the review.
Will, where are the best locations to locate wool at a reasonable price. Not looking for garbage but typically blankets are so expensive I wouldn't want to take them to the woods :)
Good video. I love the pin I will have to pick one up. I now how well a wool blanket will keep you warm as I recently went of the road in Washington with no cell reception and I had to hike back to civilization so I could get my car pulled out. I am definitely keeping a wool blanket and pin in my permanent kit.
I was watching this video and I have a question about something. I have an old 1998 mini van that I have partially turned into a campervan. I'm not going to tear it apart to insulate it properly with foam as it's not really worth it. I'm wondering if putting up a wool blankets such as you have in this video along the ceiling, walls and floor would insulate it enough in the winter so as not to use any heat source other than my body heat to keep me warm inside. Basically drape them up along the walls and ceiling and on the floor creating a cocoon like environment. Your thoughts?
Nice Brandon. I have done something similar, but added the option of attaching a snap buttons to the framing of the insulation. this way I had the foamlining the vehicle, yet optional to put up the Wool blanket or take off for outdoor cozying by a fire. Cheers ;-))
How about wool greatcoat. Does everything you showed in video better than that blanket. When I were in the army greatcoats served as rain coats, in the winter extra warmth, sleeping bags basically everything you could imagine.
Thank you for the video brother! I still prefer the 16th/17th century Belted Plaid in shear versatility being that it’s a blanket a coat pants shelter sleeping bag etc.
No what they mean is that won't the pink poke so many holes in the fabric where the two ends meet that it'll ware the cloth down and make it fall apart,.. And yeah? But not if you mark where your first holes are and just use those rather than just jabbing it in random ways every time lol
i was wondering about what size blanketpin to get. i guess yours is the big one. but i might get the smaller one to leave smaller holes in the blankets. thoughts?
Hee! Hee! Well, if my experience counts for anything the last thing you want to do is use that as a blanket indoors. Those things generate dust bunnies (we called em' "Ghost Turds" back in boot camp) like there's no tomorrow.
